Monday scent of the day 12/21

Posted by Robin on 21 December 2015 246 Comments

Ormonde Jayne

Monday again! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Ormonde Jayne Champaca.

Reminder: this coming Friday we will not have a community project. But on Monday 12/28, we'll do a special Monday project...we'll be posting our annual Best of 2015 list, so wear one of your own Best of 2015 fragrances.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You smell good!. I’m wearing Ambre Russe. I wish it would make my cold disappear. It’s been nearly a week and I’m beginning to get rather grumpy about it!

Ambre Russe is one of my favorite winter scents. I get a lot of black tea from it. Hope you feel better soon!

Hope it goes away soon – I think I read somewhere that colds last 7-10 days, so yours sounds like a tenacious one. Love Ambre Russe, just got my decant out last week.

Pacifica’s Vanilla Vera Cruz….I have had this bottle for seven or more years and it has aged beautifully (the playdoh aura some described is gone)……and what is left is Mexican Bourbon vanilla and vanilla bean fused with orchid…..some say it is the sister of Lush’s Snowflake….sadly it has been replaced by Pacifica with their new Island Vanilla…..I really hate when they do that!

Tested Le Deuxiéme from Coolife over the weekend (courtesy of ihadanidea!) and found it pleasing, but unmemorable. For all the talk of Chakra and Anahata and a lover’s hand… for me it was a pretty, pale pink, fruity floral and musk thing.

4 days until Christmas….how is that even possible?

Wearing Hilary Duff’s With Love. I like it! It’s very well done for an inexpensive scent. I ordered from FragranceNet, when I had a choice between paying shipping, or paying for another fragrance. Duh!! Of course I’ll take another scent. #NeverPayShipping 🙂

Cute story: My hubs and my oldest daughter went to Belk to buy my gift. The story told is that my hubs was a deer in headlights, and my teenager had to school him on Mommy’s favorite perfumes! She ALMOST gave away what they bought, but caught herself when she said “Clinique counter”…..LOL I THINK I have a bottle of Calyx under the tree! HAVE A GREAT MONDAY Y’ALL!

After a busy weekend, I’ve gone back and replied to everyone’s comments to my comment on the weekend poll. Silly life getting in the way of my NST time! Especially loved hearing about everyone’s favorite cheeses, and have written them down so I can try each.

Also, a note for the lovely Gaynor who mentioned a Rose d’Arabie that apparently smells like Rose Omeyyade – which Rose d’Arabie are you referring to (so that I might smell it too!:)?

Gris Clair today, sprayed with a desire to be calm, cool and collected.

I am the only person in the world that does not like PR BB, which makes me think maybe I’m not a “real” blue cheese lover. The only one I adore is Bayley Hazen blue, from Jasper Hill.

            21 December 2015 at 8:53 pm

Oh, but my comment above was serious, I am not a decent judge of blue cheese. I think I love the Bayley Hazen because it’s blue but not as sharp as the kind a real blue cheese lover would love. In other words, it’s probably just that the BH is “approachable” … whereas everyone says the Point Reyes is a fantastic blue, but I can’t appreciate it. I am maybe still in the fruity floral stage of cheese appreciation 😉

Ah. Delivery is $20… I’ll keep my eye out for the cheese in stores. Makes for a mighty pricey slice of cheese to have it mailed.

Just in case you last tried Point Reyes blues over a year ago–I swear this year is their best ever…

ihadanidea – I don’t know where you live, but raw milk cheese is impossible to find in the U.S. due to laws about unpasteurized milk. But I was able to find some pretty easily in Canada, and I know it’s available in Europe as well.

Oh, that’s not true — I buy raw milk cheeses all the time! The FDA requires additional inspections, that’s all. Even Whole Foods has a decent selection of raw milk cheese here. I have heard there are some states that don’t allow raw milk cheese, but you can definitely buy where I am.

          • newbiebex says:
            22 December 2015 at 12:10 pm

Robin – I did not know that! I was told that about the raw milk cheeses by a friend going through culinary training. Good to know they can be found Stateside!

          • Robin says:
            22 December 2015 at 12:19 pm

No, you can even buy raw milk (liquid, I mean) in many states here now. What you can’t buy are raw milk cheeses that have failed inspections, foreign or US, and in 2014 the FDA decreased their “acceptable” amount of bacteria. You have not been able to get decent French Morbier where I live ever since (there is still some Morbier, but not the good stuff). Last time I was overseas I ate Morbier every day, LOL…and lived to tell the tale.

          • newbiebex says:
            22 December 2015 at 12:34 pm

I think my state (Georgia) might be more restrictive. As far as I know, you can’t buy raw milk here for human consumption. You can buy it for animals, and drink it yourself, which I have done many times. I’ll have to check on the cheese situation next time I get to Whole Foods, or somewhere with a decent cheese counter.

Oh I know. Some food restriction laws are crazy! Although I have always wondered who it was that first looked at a “contaminated” cheese and went “hmm…maybe this will be delicious instead of ruined!” and thus blessed us with delectable, stinky cheese.

It’s the Armani Prive, which was probably not a lot cheaper than Rose Omeyyade, now that I think about it. I was too scared to look closely at the credit card bill to see what the exchange rate had inflicted on me!

Short week! So ready for some good time off. Our office is closed for a week, which will be a very nice break from the drama going on (the two annoying employees I mentioned before are at it in full force lately).

After a frigid weekend (winter weather, what?!) we’re climbing back up into Florida territory. I joked with my parents, who are actually retired in Florida, that they didn’t need to move that far since it’ll be 70 on Christmas Eve!

Update on Lyric package. Apparently it’s going to be delivered tomorrow. It’s only taken 20 days to get from MA to PA. Oh well. If it gets here, I’ll be happy. (Notice how I’m still saying “if”.)

I’m wearing La Panthere today. I needed something to keep me sharp and alert so I’ll get work done today.

OMG, I went to the Erath Website, and their list of Pinots is out of this world! Which one are you drinking? I want some of the Leland Pinot with: “Scents of dark, spiced cherry mingle with heady rose petal and exotic cardamom. Flavors of cherry accented with vanilla, a suggestion of milk chocolate and a subtle smokiness crash and spread across the palate like a dramatic wave.” although the ad copy is a tad bit heated – dramatic waves across the palate suggests Prix et Faux country… 🙂

Yep. If ever there was a disjoin between the copy on the one hand, and the actual perfume on the other, Fate is that moment of disconnection. I’ve just never got to grips with how Fate is supposed to speak of a dark future and chaos and such. To me, it’s a gentle haze of glowing golden light, not a moody intimation of dark infinity, but what do I know?

I sate in a meeting and noone moved away from me, so I have not over sprayed, just well sprayed. I get richer, more nuanced changes from this spray application. This has moved to second to top on my FB list (right after a FB of Iris Poudre)…

I’m wearing one of them today, and I am in LOVE. Quite possibly my favorite perfume I’ve ever smelled. The object of my infatuation? Jicky. I had never smelled it until this weekend, but I can’t get enough. I can’t get over what a shapeshifter it is. It does make sense! That’s one of the reasons I wanted to smell it, reputation aside. I figured if it’s been around that long, it has to be worth at least a sniff. It’s worth far more than that, as I’ve found. It’s going to be a struggle to tear myself away to wear anything else.

I do feel like I’ve taken a step toward perfumista status with this one! I was totally unfamiliar with it until I started reading the blogs.

Chamade is my absolute favorite Guerlain, followed by Mitsouko, L’Heure Blue (the extrait is so beautiful, but for $$$ reasons I bought the EDP), and Shalimar (I actually prefer the Ode a la Vanille flanker). Oh, and Apres L’Ondee is a gorgeous spring scent, although that one is a bit harder to find. Have fun!

1000 by Jean Patou- I am using the last of a sample vial I got of this. I tried this in the middle of a Vulcan summer we had in Portland this past year, and while lovely, was a bit much. Now, with the cooler, damp weather this seems cozily perfect, subtly grown up sexy, and a DAB goes a long way.

In Lyric today. Wow is this stunning. I’ve never tried it before but could easily see this becoming a very regular perfume for me. It reminds me of 90s Samsara – does anyone else find that? But somehow more smooth and nuanced (I dabbed as it’s a sample without a spray – not sure if this makes a difference). It also seems to work well for a big work day, and could easily work for the most dressed up of nights out I imagine. Am sure this as sounds a bit late to the party for those who know it but at least I’m getting there!

I love Lyric. As with the other Amouages I know, spray vs. dab can make quite a difference in how it develops. I agree that it’s a really versitile scent–a touch at work is great (and lasts all day), and you can “go big” for an evening out and know that while folks can smell you, you smell GOOD!

I don’t have either of these in my collection! I’m a little afraid of liking Diorella–isn’t that one of those that folks wax poetic about earlier formulations? I can find myself justifying rare bottles at a “good” price so easily. . .

The new version is still good, but if you can find some older Diorella on ebay it might please you even more. It’s a tad fruitier, more overripe, if that makes sense to you.

Morning, all. This is a day of serious house cleaning for me– I can’t believe how much fur my two Siamese have managed to shed this week, but that might mean that the weather has finally warmed up. Housework for me =DKNY Woman in that tall angular bottle. I love the crispness of the tomato leaf and orange/vodka notes, just the things to accompany me into corners and under sofas and to help me find the beeswax polish, which I just know I put somewhere….I think I’ll clean the oven, too. My halo, it shineth brightly!

Actually I am really trying to start to empty some of my full bottles before making another full bottle purchase…..I would really like to reduce my collection down to about ten bottles that I can rotate and not buy anything new until a full bottle is drained…..

Wow! Ten bottles? I’m bowing in respect in your direction. Well, that’s a fabulous project. Go for that instead. After all, if you were to change your mind, DKNY W would most likely still be there.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19

Perfect for the transitional weather we’re having — it was in the low 30s this morning and it is going up to the mid-50s; by the time Christmas Eve day rolls around, we’ll be in the 70s! Crazines!

Anyway, I also needed spine strengthening today (I had my performance review) and it worked!

      Hey Scent Sibling!
Glad to hear No. 19 is doing its magic for you today!

I decided to go with Chanel No. 19 edp today too–in a side-by-side with Le Parfum de Therese. So far I’m amazed at how similar they are to my nose! After about 1/2 hour, LPdT is staying bolder while the No. 19 is doing that creamy thing I love, but they have much in common.

Good morning NST’ers! Life is good here–I am drinking a latte, listening to Mark Knopfler, burning a gingerbread candle, and wearing Box of Eels parfum. Also, I didn’t injure anything skiing yesterday.

Is it just me, or are there loads more discounts on perfume this season than in past years? It seems that every other email I open is offering some astounding percentage off of scents I’d actually like to buy. However, sampling before buying was a hard-won lesson so there aren’t any purchases in the near future.

Hello perfume friends. I’ve missed you! I’ve been so busy adapting to a new job and the changing life rhythm that comes with it that I’ve hardly worn any perfume these last few months. Today is a bit quieter on that front, and I’m happily wearing Chanel Cuir de Russie EdT and looking forward to finding the time to participate more fully again in this lovely forum! This is definitely more Chanel than Cuir, if that makes any sense. Today Chanel is just the thing.

Glad you stopped by 🙂 I sampled Cuir de Russie EDT the other day too and thought it was quite nice, but from a distance I probably couldn’t pick it out of a crowd of other Chanels. In fact, my allergies are bothering me enough that I checked to see if I had picked up No. 5 EDT by accident since all I could smell was the Chanel signature aldehydes.

Started out today in Jhag Mad Madame. At first it was fine, but by time I got to work it smelled very synthetic and screetchy. I didn’t have much in my purse, but I then put on Gucci Guilty. Which on it’s own is just ok for me. ( although, I really like Guilty Black ) anyway, not a good smelling day for me. Off to wash it all away now.

Dueling SOTD on each wrist–I’ve got the Narciso EDT on one and the Jo Malone Orris & Sandalwood on the other. Neither is an immediate winner for me. I agree totally with Robin’s assessment that the Narciso EDT is more approachable and less interesting. The Orris & Sandalwood smells nicer, to me, and it’s sorta growing on me as I wear it, but having, by chance, just retested Bois Farine yesterday, Orris & Sandalwood seems pretty unimaginative by comparison (especially for $170). Will be curious to hear others’ takes though–I can def see it being a happy medium for someone who likes these notes and wants something warm and cozy, without being too loud or too sweet or whathaveyou.

After I washed off my earlier scented disaster, I sprayed on NR Narciso. also used the shower gel and lotion ( yay! for gift sets ) I absolutely love this perfume, I find it comforting. I am a oversprayer, so on me, it might seem a little stronger than it is supposed to be. unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the other two you mentioned.
