Thursday scent of the day 12/17

Posted by Robin on 17 December 2015 240 Comments

Han Solo

Almost Friday, folks! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack.

Reminder: tomorrow we're doing Best Buy Friday...wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2015. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing Commes des Garcons edp today, it’s finally cold and I love the spicy clove in CdG. Have a great day everyone!

Is that the original CdG? I love that one, such a distinctive scent.

This cold is still hanging on but at least I feel less tired.
Waking up with a cup of MF french breakfast, in La Fille de Berlin and pairing it with TF love bruise lip color. Though I can’t smell much I am sure the Rose perfume smells good.

I read the Ines (Vogue) article someone posted yesterday, and I agree with everything she said, except her thoughts about the vanilla and gourmet. Which happened to be some of my favorite scents.

Also, wanted to mention yesterday I was in Chelsea market to get some milk from my favorite place. Stopped into anthropology and found I’m Amouage bath products!

It was so odd to see a Amouage at that store! At least they had a tester of Dia lotion. Yum!
No perfume though just a few bath products. No sales :(

Yeah – now that I’ve looked at them on their website, I can see that you can get a lot of those for lower prices at the discounters.

Still, how lovely that they’ve added that to their product lineup!

Wow!! I would really like to test the Amouage body products in person. Thanks for the head’s up!

Weird, I just looked on the website and found the body lotion and gels. Anthro kinda needs to do a better job of organizing their inventory though. You choose which one you want by color – even though the colors have zero to do with the actual product. It’s kinda weird. They’d be better letting you choose which one you want by name.

No I haven’t. I find the Puredistance fragrances too expensive. I once won a sample set on Bois de Jasmin of 2 Puredistances. M and Antonia. Really enjoyed M but thought the whole thing was overdesigned and erased the house from my memory.

I have tried Rose Irisée by Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger which reminded me of HE as well.

I didn’t quite “get” Lampblack the first time I tried it, but the second time (after applying more liberally) I fell hard for it. I’m in Incense Flash today and wondering how my Tauerville samples would smell layered (something I’m usually not brave enough to do).

The combination of Rose and Vanilla Flash is wonderful, IMHO. I haven’t smelled the Incense or Amber ones yet, but they probably would layer well too.

SOTD FM Le Parfum de Terese. Such an odd duck, this one, but kind of addictive. I haven’t seen any of the newer Star Wars films, but looks like we’ll try to see it this weekend if it isn’t sold out. Aqua Allegoria Winter Delice, pine sap and gingerbread and wood smoke. It’s so incredible. I can’t believe they didn’t keep that one in their lineup (although it is completely unlike the erst of the Aqua Allegoria series so I guess it doesn’t fit the aesthetic: they should have re-released it as a standalone.)

I was going to wear one of the samples I found in my old Birchbox stash, but they’re mostly super sweet teeny bopper stuff, or else more summer than the season requires. The lone seasonally appropriate smelling one is a fragrance and house I’m totally unfamiliar with, Arquiste L’Etrog, but I wasn’t sure about longevity.

All of which is to say that I’m in one of my new favorites, Elixir des Merveilles. It makes me feel like such a badass. Fits my mood and my outfit.

Also, I guess my idea to wear my navy lipstick to Star Wars tonight was a good one because Lupita Nyong’o rocked up to the premiere in London in some. I’m still going to wear mine, and enjoy it.

Sorry for the word explosion all, I had an energy drink this morning, and I’m so excited about Star Wars that I might burst. Or cry. Or both, who knows?

Nevermind, I decided to wait. Mostly because it’s EDT and I prefer parfum. If anybody else wants to bite, it’s a full bottle for under $40 and free shipping.

LAdDM often seems a bit too dry for me so layering it with Casmir is a great idea – I’ll go home and try it tonight. (I often sweeten up my LAdDM with SSS Champagne de Bois or LA Traversee du Bosphore (SP?)).

LAdDM is a great layering frag for TdB – I do the same! TdB grows more sweet as I wear it and I want to bring it back to earth.

I read a suggestion to layer it with, of all things, Bellodgia. It’s AWESOME! But I have a good, vintage bottle of the Caron, so not sure what to do when that wears out. I need, it needs a good carnation to make this combo work.

Layering with Casmir sounds like an excellent idea!

I also wonder what LAdDM would be like with a spritz of a citrus like L’ Artisan’s Mandarine…

In Costume National today, and enjoying its mellow incense plus other things very much. I applied this as an alternative to Copal Azure, which I love, but which seemed a little strident this morning. This Costume National is a sleeper hit for me! I might have to get a larger decant of this when my sample is gone…

Getting vintage No 5 is really not so hard. I’ve got about 4 or 5 bottles of used vintage No 5 parfum from ebay. If they are used, they are not as spendy. I haven’t looked for a while, but a few years ago you could get about 8 mls++ for about $25 or so. You should try!

This morning I’m wearing the second of my three Ormonde Jayne samples, Ta’if.

    Swooooooooooooooooooon!!!

I’ve never had such an instant and total connection with a perfume before. As soon as it touched my skin, I knew it was something special. By the time I got to work, I sent an email to my husband suggesting a bottle for our upcoming 20-year dating anniversary. (I’d love to associate this beauty with him.)

The rose is very similar to the rose of Mohur, which I love. At first I thought it was too similar to justify a bottle, but as it dried down, I realized that I like it much more than Mohur (shock!). Ta’if has the rose in soft spices and dusty fruits (if that makes sense), while Mohur’s rose becomes almost candied on my skin and therefore does not reach perfection. Ta’if is perfection on me. As long as I can still smell it by day’s end.

Goodness, I’ll stop going on and on now. :) Suffice to say that I’m happy.

    Ooooooh wow. This week.

Earlier this week, five minutes before I was going to tell my boss that I’d be leaving for a new position in three weeks, the love of my life (still the case even though we broke up 12 years ago) sent me an email from Australia (where he now lives) to say he was thinking about me and wanted to know if we could talk.

It has been intense. I have so much to do to prepare for my departure, as I refuse to leave a mess behind me, and so much to do to prepare for my next job, and the various holiday social obligations are inconveniently happening at the same time….

    I need some scotch.

But for now, wearing Amouage Fate is a huge, huge help.

Hope you’re all having a good week.

Yes, an intense transition, although I’ve been in this job only two years. I’m leaving for good! My husband and I decided to move back to our home state of NC to be near family and I’d like to spend some time at home with the baby. I’m not sure when I’ll be ready to find a new job. I always assumed I’d be the type of person to return to work right after maternity leave, but that’s not how it’s turned out. A nerve-wracking change ten years into a successful legal career, but also exciting.

Best of luck with your new job! It sounds like a great opportunity for you.

SOTD is Tom Ford London, smoky and oudy and leathery and woody and spicy. A fine scent for Darth Vader. In honor of The Event, I’m wearing my R2D2 earrings and Darth Vader necklace, which I bought back in the day when the first Star Wars movie came out. I **so** wanted to be Luke back then. (Never saw any reason, then or now, why being female should get in the way of doing whatever I wanted to!)

Wearing Kerbside Violet…what a great little perfume. It starts off very simply as violet, both the flower and the stalk ( so has a snatch of Cristalle alongside the familiar violet scent). Because of the whole flower aspect there is a kind of grittiness to the violet, like it is bursting up through a crack in the pavement. After a couple of hours only the soft, sweetness of the Violet remains, but it is candied, almost edible. This might be my best perfume of 2015 and I generally hate Violet scents. It’s only just reached NZ hence my 2015 listing….good things happen to those who wait!
By contrast biggest disappointment: my replacement bottle of Daim Blonde ( bought unsniffed ). Starts by smelling like a sad old orange…the one that has been forgotten in the fruit bowl for months …. A dried up, juiceless, bitter orange that no one wants to eat. And after twenty minutes the perfume practically disappears ….you need a Hoover nose to detect what is actually a lovely fruit, oily good quality furniture oil garnished with black pepper. I’d read that the new Daim blond was different from its pre 2004 predecessor but so sad….no fruity apricot, no sweetness….just poor old rest home orange. Ugh….and I could have bought 4 kerbside Violets for the same price as one Daim Blond.
Yay Friday is here! Honeysuckle is going insane in the garden …life is sweet.

I am dying to try Kerbside Violet but they don’t sell it in the US yet. Knowing that you like it makes me want it even more! The SA in my Lush store said we might get it this spring, but she didn’t really know. She said it smells like the Ultraviolet bubble bar, which I adored (sadly, discontinued). I may break down and order the solid perfume, since the shipping charges for non-liquids are more reasonable.

Kanuka, you make me jealous — honeysuckle in the garden! Violet perfume! I think a detour to Lush is in my immediate future.

By the way, thank you for you kind words of supper about that complaint. I saw my Head of School briefly yesterday, and apparently, the cause of the complaint is basically that I breathe. He suggested that I just keep out of her way for a while — usually this would be hard for me, because I tend to confront trouble rather than discreetly avoid it — but in this case, it suits me very well to comply with his wishes. Mind you, anything would suit me very well today: Last Day!

Mmm supper : toast and honey. I think it must be supper time now – surely some scientific research shows that eating supper before 11 am aids cell renewal, keeps alzheimers at bay and increases brain function.

I had a friend go through a similar university complaint and the more she tried to show open and willing to undertake mediation through HR the more the complainer tried to block mediation and open discussion…it became clear that the complainer was a serial trouble maker and passive agressive and thrived off drama. And it all started because someone moved a trolley near her door (encroached on her space). Kindergarten stuff.

Will probably wait until the crowds die down a little before I brave the theater for new Star Wars, but I’m looking forward to it.

Am still waiting for my new dishwasher (it should arrive in the next 3-4 days), 7 weeks after the old one died and Sears’ two attempts to fix it failed. AND the dryer died this morning. (*@A&%**! However, we called the very local, slightly more expensive, great-service appliance store and they’ll bring us a new dryer tomorrow.

    Vintage Emeraude today, for comfort.

We’re having electrical gremlins lately, half the kitchen lights are out due to a blown transformer (guess what DH is doing this weekend), and the truck’s in the shop after its electronics freaked out in the latest rainstorm. I’m wearing Opardu (it’s lovely, but could use a bit more oomph, no?) and drinking vinho verde at work. It’s almost Christmas and half past 6 here, so it’s not as bad as it sounds.

      Annikky-

You get an enabler pin. I received my Chanel samples and decided on Beige for the office. My FB just came today. Now I have that one to go along with my 31 Rue. Thanks for your good advice. I am excited!

Thank you! I’m very glad it worked out for you, it really is a good office scent. In fact, I should wear Beige myself one of these days. I don’t know anyone outside the perfume community who doesn’t like smelling it.

Hello,, hello, hello, and best of good mornings to,you all! It’s the last day! I have five research meetings with students, and then it’s over for this year! Last day, last day, last day! So, I’m wearing a perfume that is bottled joy for me, Rahat Loukoum, and I’m all wrapped around in a cloud of almondy, cherry-syrup happy-sweet goodness. It’s my Best Buy, except for all my other Best Buys. I’ve painted my fingernails deep red, I’m prancing around in my red boots (it’s cold again) and my dear man says I put him in mind of a manic mosquito….it’s all right, you get that sort of thing after 44 years! Last day, everyone. Red boots! Rahat Loukoum! Oh, and while I was writing the last sentence, an email came in cancelling one meeting. Yes! This day gets better and better, and it’s only half past six!

Four days? I’ll dance with you! I’ll start now! Honestly, I feel about 30 again…young and light and free! I’m already annoying everyone at work by being hideously cheerful. In their opinion, dancing would be an improvement on my merry yodelling and feeble puns.

I survived a bizarre surgery, so to thank my awesome team, I contacted my Man in NY to suggest a gift for my medical team that wasn’t Harry and David’s fruit basket. He sent me 2 of these boxed small decants from a company called Ex Nihilo. Huh. I am trying one called Venenun Kiss. Smells like Opus VI Lite. Good, but I can’t see a Montana surgeon wearing this. The feminine one was Fleurs Narcotique, which reminded me of Hermes Fbg. 24, but, not as good. I’ve decided to handmake a card for each, and keep one set of samples and give the other to a more seasoned perfumista. Might have been better off with a basket of fruit…I tried…

Hey, congrats on pulling through the surgery! That’s wonderful. And it definitely sounds like you tried–perfume-buying for Montanans is a challenge :) I’m sure they will appreciate your personal cards. Hearing how meaningful their work is beats stuff any day.

To go one step even lower brow… I have sent many huge boxes of donuts to medical teams…with a warm card. The team is supported by the rest of the staff and the rest of the staff appreciates being included in the thanks and the donuts wind up in the employee lounge for about 10 minutes and then they are gone…. and the surgeons drive off in their M3s and the oncologists in their Hondas… and so it goes.

But I do love the thought of your curious surgeon sniffing gingerly at the perfume samples…

I’m testing Alaia, courtesy of the lovely Ihadanidea.

Totally off-topic whine: Feeling a wee bit sorry for myself as a trucker opened his door into the side of my car as I was driving down a narrow lane/road yesterday and took out a chunk of the passenger side of my car. No one was hurt, and the poor man was nearly out of his wits with apologies. But the estimate from the body shop is staggering… our insurance will pick up most of the tab, but I am in a rental for three plus weeks…. and my kitten is sick (he’s 2, but we still call him the kitten). My son and I are taking him to vet this afternoon, in my rental car.

As for the Alaia, I’m getting a red pepper/tomato leaf vibe (NOT listed in the notes, and not mentioned by anyone else so is clearly the product of my over imaginative nose). I am reminded of Womanity somewhat…. the saltiness and the sweet musk together perhaps?

Aww, sorry to hear about your car and your kitty. I hope both are in perfect working order again soon.

I’ve been known to hallucinate food scents in my perfumes (Un Jardin En Mediterinee actually reminds me of tomato sauce, and I’m particularly prone to imagining apple and banana in scents where they definitely don’t exist). I’m actually slightly more tempted to try Alaia since you mentioned red pepper/tomato leaf, though, even if it doesn’t come across the same way to my very silly nose.

Not sure what time it will be in your neck of the woods when I post this, so you may not see it, but for what my opinion is worth, I have decidedI quite like Alaia. I can find all sorts of leafy greenness it, but II don’t get the full range of notes unless I wear the body lotion, which is sufficiently potent on its own that I don’t really need the perfume as well. However, if I do spray the perfume from my sample when I wear the body lotion, I then get all sorts of interesting things that simply never emerge on me if I wear the perfume alone, when it tends to be some violet, a bit more violet and even more violet. I rather admire the two together.

Your nose I think is on a lot straighter than mine. I just looked at the notes… and while I get the initial violet, it quickly goes into leafy, salty, musky territory on me… THIS is why I am not a famous nose at Firmenich….
