Wednesday scent of the day 12/16

Posted by Robin on 16 December 2015 196 Comments

Han Leia rings

It's Jane Austen's birthday! What fragrance did you pick for today?

I'm wearing Parfums DelRae Wit.

Reminder: this Friday, 12/18, we're doing Best Buy Friday: wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2015. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Star Wars I Love You / I Know rings are made of stainless steel. They're $19.99 each at ThinkGeek. Bonus reading: How the Famous 'I Love You/I Know' Scene From 'The Empire Strikes Back' Really Came Together at Yahoo.

I didn’t know that. I’m wearing PdN Maharadjah, which seems more Marianne Dashwood than Emma Woodhouse to me.
    Do you like Wit?

I wish they would find a distributor for Europe, as well. And travel sizes would be a great idea. Their stuff is potent.

A travel size of Wit would be a no-brainier instant purchase for me. Hope they do it soon. Discovered the other day that my newest (small, thankfully) decant has evaporated in only about a month :(

Oof, that’s the worst!! I guess it is a good argument for travel sprays even tho they’re usually pricier than decants would be. A proper seal is worth something!

It’s sort of hard to describe. The rose is prominent, but it’s a very soft, powdery rose; it actually feels like a soft creamy chypre even though they don’t describe it that way.

I’m in Mitsouko today and drinking Harney & Son’s hot cinnamon spice tea. Too many spices now going on! I had to dilute my tea a bit. I always forget how strong just two sprays of Mitsouko can be as well.

Here’s the link to the Vogue article, which describes not only her “5 rules” but also her perfume evolution:

          http://www.vogue.com/13380260/french-girls-french-perfume-ines-de-la-fressange-chanel-shalimar/

The short answer is that she wore patchouli in the 70s, then Floris Sandalwood, Chanel No. 19, Chanel Cuir de Russie, and now Mitsouko.

No reason why not, Mitsouko is simply not what I expected. She always looks very modern, almost always in skinny pants. I’ve seen photos of her office and her home in Paris, too, and the decor is very modern and the apartment is very streamlined. I can’t imagine her in anything created before the 1970s.

Perhaps I should have been tipped off by her full name: Inès Marie Lætitia Églantine Isabelle de Seignard de La Fressange, and the fact that she grew up in an 18th-century mill outside Paris.

I haven’t quite gotten that far on picking out a SOTD. I’m kicking myself on not getting Havana Vanille on Beauty Encounter when I could. It’s sold out and I’m stuck with E-bay. I had a really good coupon for Beauty Encounter too. Havana Vanille or Jicky will probably end up as my SOTD. Why did they have to discontinue Havana Vanille?

NOOOOO! Have you tried Frapin 1697? Duchaufour did created them both around the same time, and it’s the same idea with with cognac. I tend to wear Havana Vanille in summer and 1697 in winter.

I tried 1697 quite a while back and don’t remember much about it. Except that it was very similar to 1270. I will have to get another decant of this. But I do have my eye on a couple reasonably priced Havana Vanille on E-bay. So either today or tomorrow, I will snap one up, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Happy birthday to Jane Austen, one of my favorite authors!

I ordered a small Ormonde Jayne sampler of Ta’if, Tolu, and Champaca. This morning I’m wearing the entire 1/2 ml of Champaca and finding it uniquely lovely. Already under full bottle consideration, although I need to see how it lasts through the day. Seems quite light.

I like it thus far — the raspberry sort of just blends into the rose for me, making it rather liqueur-like. But I just used a little dauber vial–maybe the raspberry is more prominent sprayed?

The raspberry disappears fairly early on me, or maybe it just melts into the rose. Should get my sample (a spray one, from Andy’s sample set) out soon.

I rarely buy FBs anymore; given how many perfumes I already have, it will be rare for me to use up more than 5 ml of any of them. But cost-effectiveness is not all, and I finally succumbed to that beautiful, antique plume bottle of Diptyque Essences Insensées 2014 (the mimosa one). So lovely, it smells like something out of the long lost L’AP Harvest Fragrances series. I’m delighted with my purchase – that beautiful bottle also feels wonderful in the hand.

My only reservation is that the atomizer does not firmly lock into the “off” position. When it arrived, it was an eighth of an inch out of position. (I think perhaps the weight of the atomizer bulb may have caused it to rotate when the box was on its side.) I could smell the perfume before I opened it, so I know there had been some evaporation. I’m storing it in a drawer now, so I’ll be able to check whether this is happens or not when the atomizer is fully counterclockwise. Of course, all the more reason to spritz with abandon rather than “saving” it, right? ;-)

I am having a problem with the atomizer on my recent Guerlain purchase. When I spray its sound kind of loud and sucking air, is this normal? I can also tell when I open the closet it really smells like that perfume in there so I think its evaporating somehow..
      Any tips?

Oh dear. Mmm…short of noz’s idea about spritz with abandon :) I’m afraid the only idea I have is to decant it into an empty bottle. Not a very visually pleasing solution I’m afraid. Or, likewise, perhaps make a decant and then cover the leaky atomizer with something like parafilm? Although maybe someone else could chime in about how easy or not it would be to remove parafilm from an atomizer when it’s time to reup your decant–I’ve only had it to seal the necks of decants, so I can’t speak to whether it’s easily removable, you wouldn’t want to stop up the atomizer permanently while there’s still perfume in the bottle!

Parafilm appears to me to come off quite cleanly. It stretches, though, so you might need to replace it with a new piece each time.

From way at the back of the cabinet, SOTD is Donna Karan Wenge, one of the “essences” from several years ago that I think were intended to be layered. I bought this at the same time as Black Cashmere—it’s actually very similar to something in the base of BC, but less spicy and less complex—and I used to layer it with Black Cashmere to smooth out some of the rough edges when the incense and spice in BC seemed too overpowering. Black Cashmere now seems pretty tame to me, but Wenge is still a nice, sweetish, creamy wood scent to wear on its own.

Actually. If anyone’s had an Ofresia bottle for a while, I’d be curious to hear how it’s held up. Saw a partial bottle (in the old square bottles) for sale but the juice was pretty dark, wasn’t sure it made sense to commit a lot of money to it…

I’m wearing Tabac Tabou today, since I decided to give it another try last night and it was still going strong when I got up. Now that I’ve let go of my expectations, I really do like this one. I just have to brace myself for the weirdly sweet opening. It seems to suit the windy, slightly cooler day perfectly.
Yesterday I thought I wanted to wear Chypre Mousse. I didn’t. I suffered. It was hot and dead-still and I’ve been working on clearing some cactus that’s invading the riverbank, so I was suffocating in layers of what is usually mossy bliss but was somehow rendered a strangely cola-like herbal disaster. Sadly, it doesn’t repel mosquitos either.

I’m wearing Un Jardin En Mediterranee. I was hesitant to buy it, because it has fig, and I don’t like fig (based on trying two figs only, L’Artisan’s Premier Figuier and Pacifica’s Mediterranean Fig). However, I went ahead and grabbed a mini, since they don’t come along all that often. I’m surprised at how much I like it, but I don’t smell the mustiness that I smell with the other two I’ve tried. So far, it isn’t a fig forward scent. I am now hoping that Le Jardin de Monsieur Li is provided in a mini so that I can finish out my Un Jardin collection.

I am cracking up over this one on the list and its totally ME!

When someone asks you what your signature scent is, you’re like, “Well, what season are we talking about here? Because I have a fall signature scent, a winter signature scent, a spring one, and one for summer, too. And are we talking about florals or oceanics or woodsy fragrances? Because I have a signature scent for each of those categories too, so…”

No SOTD yet for me, got up early on my day off to continue work on my studio in the basement. It’s a little damp and chilly down there and giving me the sniffles. All the more reason to spritz on a little something so I can sniffle pleasant smells.

Hmmm. So my products will probably be too heavy for your hair. I don’t know what kind of effect you’re going for with your product either. I use Palmer’s Olive Oil shampoo and conditioner, and a Mixed Chicks curl cream.

What I do when I’m looking for new hair products, and this may or may not work for you depending on what end result you’re going for, is go to a store that carries a decent selection of ethnic hair care products. For whatever reason, it seems to be easier to find products, and shampoos, and conditioners, that aren’t as heavily scented in that section. You’re also more likely (but by no means guaranteed) to find products with more natural ingredients in them.

Hope you find something that works for you!

Greetings and salutations! I’m wearing 19. I need it to get through graduation today. I love my students, and I love to see their success and hear their news– First jobs! Getting engaged! The big OE! — but today I’ll be dragging around in my academic robes and smiling the rictus smiles of too many photos and introductions to mum and dad and granny and big brother. It’s all, “We’ve heard so much about you!” (I really hope they haven’t!) and “We love hearing about your stories!” (Stories? Me?). The worst thing is, apart from being positive about 19, I don’t know what to wear. I did my doctorate at Waikato, so my academic robe is maroon and the hood is crimson. And then there’s the damn bloody hat! You try pulling together sonething that looks reasonable under that lot! I bet the committee that designed the academic dress for Waikato was composed entirely of men. Do I sound grouchy? Sorry. Even Dakkie is keeping clear right now. I will recover my good humour and equilibrium by adding another small –no, large!– spritz of 19.

Hello and happy graduation day! Have been meaning to message you all week–so grateful for your sympathies about the incident with my oral exams. Really had me wishing I’d had someone like you looking out for students when I was going through that! And so I don’t doubt in the slightest that the students’ extended relatives have heard ALL about the One Kind Person in their department! (I had an encouraging word from someone in my department a week or two ago, and I was so shocked I cried.) So please spritz your 19 with abandon, you truly deserve it!!

Oh, thank you! I don’t know that I deserve your kind words, but I will try to from now on. Oh, and I did so spritz, after which the dear one-Richard, not Dakkie– gave me a restorative cuddle and whispered that I smell fabulous! So, I’m all bouncy and smiley again and about to bound off to work and see what’s what. Today will be fun, even if I do have to spend it encased in metres of maroon wool styled for what passed as high fashion among medieval monks.

I did go bold, but not as far as black lipstick. I must buy some! And I think a studded collar as well, perhaps. That would certainly add a frisson to these occasions! And maybe some Awful Excretions, or whatever that perfume is. My last 18 months at work could become a legend in organisational history!

One thing I love about graduation ceremonies is the variety of regalia worn by the academic staff – some of the gowns and headwear are amazing, but I can sympathise with the challenge of what to wear with some of them.

Yes, it’s impossible to get things right. I envy American colleagues, whose robes often seem to fasten all the way up the front. No problems with there with what to wear: comfy underwear gets the job done, I should think. One person in particular has the most spectacular gown, all the colours of the Pacific. I must find out which uni he attended.

I’ve been sampling Escentric Molecules 01, which I’ve heard many good things about, so I was super excited to finally try it. But alas, I can hardly smell anything! Does this mean I’m anosmic to this particular scent? Is anyone else in the same boat as me? It’s so disappointing!

Otherwise I’m wearing OJ Orris Noir, which is freaking heavenly. Might be on of my favorites OJ’s period. Divine.

I haven’t heard this, but it makes some sense to me that anything that’s just one molecule is probably at especially high risk of noticeable anosmia. At least with full compositions, there will be plenty of other ingredients still to smell if someone’s anosmic to one element–but for 01, if you’re anosmic to that one molecule, that’s the ballgame!

They’re a confusing brand but the “escentric”s are blends and the “molecule”s are single note eg: molecule01 is just iso-e and 02 is ambroxan I think. There were a couple I couldn’t smell either, but one I couldn’t smell initially bloomed unexpectedly later on.

There was a pop-up ad for Origins on my laptop this morning. It reminded me I haven’t worn Ginger Essence in a while, so I put some on. Also, they are having a 20% off sale with free shipping until the 18th in the US.

Wearing AT Amber Flash today. I am really enjoying it. On me, it starts out with lots of amber, of course, and sandalwood and after a while I smell a sort of woody note. Then the amber comes back with the sandalwood and also patch and I do get a little sweetness, too, in just the right amount. Interesting how it changes.

SOTD is Aqaba, to get me in the Christmas mood. Love this plush, rosy-pomander scent.

If anyone has an artificial tree and wants to bring in the scent of the real thing, I recommend Alora’s Pino. You could hide it behind the tree, and no one would be the wiser.

Oh, I have an Aquaba sample someone sent me. Was it you? Anyway, thanks for reminding me of it, I will wear it some over the holidays.

Continuing my neglected FMs this week: L’Eau d’Hiver. Nice but it’s much colder today and wanting more heft, so I just spritzed some Alahine from a decant in my bag. The 2 are playing rather nicely together.

I envy you your colder weather. (I haven’t dared to get my Alahine out yet… it’s in the mid-60sF here, and I don’t want to ruin any Alahine experiences because I love it so.)

I first tried it when it was still pretty warm out and realized I should put it away before we become enemies. I took it blind in a swap and I really like it. It’s our first day here below 60 in a while.

I feel the same way. Interestingly I tried Ambre 114 today and it was fine. But one whiff of Alahine is still touch. Oh well 9 times out of 10 there’s a cold snap right after Christmas!

You folks are a hoot (no offense meant). I couldn’t remember weather or an experience related to a perfume I wore if I knocked myself out trying. Clearly evidence of advanced decrepitude on my part.

Wearing the very rarely mentioned here Tom Ford Black Orchid EDP. I am getting a coconutty gardenia much like the heart of the Versace Crystal Noir EDP I wore last week. I love when I get a light bulb moment with a scent or two I’ve worn a thousand times before.
    Lots of sillage – and I ain’t hatin’ it !!! YMMV ;)

I swear I read somewhere – can’t begin to remember – a list of beach perfumes with Black Orchid as the non-traditional choice. When I finally tried it and smelled all that coconut, this made total sense.

Congratulations – I usually fail to figure out what the connection is, unless it’s with something I wear a lot.

In Puredistances White today and then after that had faded a spritz of Ambre 114. I had forgotten how lovely it can be!

I wasn’t feeling great this morning (fine now, fortunately) and wanted something comfy, so I went with Vanille Insensee.

Late entry! Went without all day…ran out of the house scentless this morning…. But now settled in bed with Dulcess. Warm sugary vanilla scent to doze off to! Night y’all…. :)

    SOTD = Puredistance White

I rarely get compliments on my perfume but I got one today. I was slightly heavy-handed and Puredistance perfumes are very highly concentrated.

Sadly, I don’t have perfume storage worth writing home about…at least not yet.
