Monday scent of the day 11/9

Posted by Robin on 9 November 2015 246 Comments

vetiver mat

Another Monday morning! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Honoré des Prés Chaman's Party. I think (?) it's been discontinued.

Reminder: this Friday will be Cheap Thrill Friday...as we head into the holiday spending period, wear a fragrance that would not break the bank even in a full size. (suggested by Bardot)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the striped vetiver mat shown above is $35 at Viva Terra..."A steamy bath is the ideal setting for our vetiver mat to release its signature refreshing scent. Triggered by moisture, the vetiver-root fibers give off a natural woodsy perfume, and the multicolor stripes offer eye-catching appeal to match the mat's usefulness and sole-satisfying feel."

What a lovely idea for a bath mat! Would be a great holiday gift too.
I am I Shalimar Soufflé – I got a sample a while back and it’s taking me a bit to finish. The citrus vanilla seems to go well with this cool morning.

I still want the big vetiver laundry hamper I posted eons ago. Maybe I’ll break down and buy one.

Define “need”. Some wise person once said,”For a happy marriage (and by extension, life) budget for luxuries first.

And I am NOT going to look and see if they still sell it, LOL…probably somebody makes one, somewhere, and I really probably don’t need it. Although the fact that it is linen-lined and let’s you separate dark & light, that is a big bonus.

I happen to be wearing a cheap thrill today from my desk drawer cache – Cacharel Noa. Unobjectionable but pretty, perfect for the office.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

So firstly, some context – I leave for work at 8 in the morning and have so many activities each night that I tend not to get home until 9 or 10, depending on the day (it’s all fun and I’m single, so believe me that’s not a complaint). I also have all packages delivered to me here at work because though my landlords are wonderful, they are not always great at getting things to me right away and there have been occasional package delivery issues. So without my having really planned it, a lot of decants and samples just ended up staying here.

I’d say in the little box on my desk, I have a few dozen dabber samples and maybe 7 or 8 decants of like Santal Carmin (I have a decant in my purse of this one too), Velvet Rose and Oud, Aerin Rose de Grasse, and my three Chanels that are *perfect* work scents (31 Rue Cambon, Cuir de Russie, and Bois des Iles).

If I get full bottles, they are carried home, but even two tiny bottles I got in the last round of swapping are still residing on my desk. I’m more alert and attentive at work so testing seems to work better while I’m here too.

Having a special coin purse with 3-5 samples in it all times makes an “everywhere cache.”

Problem is, I like to change my purse with my outfits! I have a little wallet that moves from purse to purse, but no room there for samples as well as the billions of cards, IDs, etc.

Okay, Theorema fans, I was back at the salon this weekend and can now verify that it was the MoroccanOil (the kind in the turquoise bottle with orange lettering) Moisture Repair conditioner that reminded me of the scent six weeks ago. It’s not an exact duplicate, but it might be close enough to get a fix.

My Lumiere Blanche sprayer has gone cattywampus, so I’m wearing that all over today.

I tried a sample of Don’t Rain on My Parade, and for starters, the teal blue color really turns me off. I didn’t think it would bother me, but it does. The smells was OK but not my thing I guess since I didn’t even finish the sample :/
Definitely floral, and the violet is there, but it’s an odd scent to my nose.
I’m sure it will have fans.
I’m staying true to Rose Jam!

Would agree — if you want lots of oomph, you need the old Lush. Liked the Korres, but used it up and not planning to replace it. Have heard the Jurlique is nice but I keep forgetting to smell it at the mall.

Wish Lush would do a really fantastic vetiver shower gel while they’re at it.

Maybe, but if you look at other creations like MPCPC, the original Vetiver, Eau de Monsieur and the work that Doyen has done with LesNez it fits rather well. But I agree that it is very different to Mandragore, Petite Chérie and the like.

Today is definitely a Cuir de Russie day. The weather was right for it and I’m wearing an off white cotton sweater that somehow just says – casual chic, along with maroon skinny pants and ankle boots. I think I was impressed upon by both wardrobe and weather with my perfume choice today.

Running late this morning, so had breakfast at the office and perfume from my purse: L’Eau d’Hiver.

It’s a beautiful, sunny, cool morning in Boston. So far November has been fantastic in the Northeast!

    SOTD: Sankran by myself.

A bit of a haphazard creation inspired by my childhood summer in Bangkok. Opening with spicy, fresh nutmeg and a hint of floral, citrusy petitgrain. The fresh opening along with the strong incense character of olibanum temper the sweetness of the composition. Patchouli provides the camphorous character I want. Then, an overdose of rose is at the centre against a backdrop of amber accord, sandalwood, and musks.

Robin and NSTers, I would love to send you a vial for your opinions 🙂

That sounds interesting. How did you make it? Do you have your own oils or was this part of a workshop?

It was a workshop at a ‘perfume bar’ run by a perfumer. There were bottles of pre-made accords and mixes like fougère, amber, sport, orange, musk, melon, fresh green, and gardenia along with ingredients diluted in alcohol solution. We would sit around a bar and the raw materials went past us on a conveyor belt — think sushi bar — for us to pick up. I asked for the not-so-popular nutmeg and olibanum, the latter, much to my chagrin, is causing me a headache now. After smelling and selecting the materials we liked, we were given complete freedom to write fomulae and compose for a 30 ml spray flacon.

This sounds amazing! I once created my own fragrance at a perfume bar like that and called it Roses Vanille. Unfortunately, my result was waaaaaay too sweet. I wish the “bartender” had been more willing to back me off some of my choices. I recently found a real Roses Vanille by Mancera and it’s exactly what I was going for: sweet and rich but elegant. 🙂

Hello, all. I can’t sleep, so I’m drifting round in a haze, and to assist the haziness, I tried a little EL Jasmine White Moss, which is very fresh and pretty. It won’t be my SOTD, though: I need a powerhouse, to counteract the short sleep and to push me out into the busy day. I try not to let myself get stressed about my frequent nights of insomnia, but I’m beginning to wonder whether I might maybe perhaps possibly ask the doctor for a magic pill. Sorry for moaning: to happier things. I think I will wear Lyric today. It’s soft but powerful, or alternatively, powerful but soft, and I think it will do the trick.

Waterdragon, have you ever tried listening to talking books to help with insomnia? I have an iPod with earbud things and listen to stories, read by a narrator with a soothing voice…Stephen Fry might do it for you, or Kenneth Branagh, Colin Firth, Andrew Scott etc. pick a book you know, a classic so you won’t worry about missing the story….and just let the voice lull you to sleep. Combine with a dose of a lavender based perfume…and zzzzzzz.

      • Kanuka says:

The narrator’s voice cancels out the voices in your head…but you need ear bud things so it goes directly to the brain! Now I’m sounding insane. A slightly dull in places book works well, too.

I have tried, but I’m a very auditory (is that even a word? It looks wrong, and I’m too tired to think) learner; a collector and teller of stories (not a writer, though), and in the past, the voices-into-my-head thing has woken me further. It’s time to try again, though, and of course, the utterly adorable Stephen Fry would be a good place to make a beginning. Lavender I love, but I have to repair to the spare room to use it, because it makes my husband sneeze and sneeze, and then there’s two of us awake and slightly grumpy. You’re so kind to help. I sometimes think that the sleepless thing will cure itself when we go back to heartland to live.

I’m not familiar with Stephen Fry but I do know Colin Firth and am pretty sure his voice would keep me up rather than put me to sleep … but only because I developed a gigantic crush on him after seeing him in an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice years ago. Your mileage may, of course, vary. 🙂

Colin Firth will always be Mr. Darcy in my head…I find watching reruns of not particularly engaging TV comedies does it for me. Reruns so you already know what is going to happen, with no actors who are so fun to watch it doesn’t matter what they are doing.
The early years of Parks and Rec, for example. Cute the first time, very relaxing the second time…

I’m intrigued. Does the powder smell of L’Apres, or is the match more that you are attributing scent to colour and texture, if you see what I mean? I sort of hope it’s the second.

It’s a bit of both – the powder definitely smells of violets, although it’s a sweeter smell than Apres l’Ondee (it is probably more similar to Insolence). But the pale powderiness and pearly sheen of the Meteorites seem to match L’Apres pretty well, too.

It was chilly and foggy here in Beaverton, and it’s Monday.

Monday grown up outfit: I am wearing a grey silk blouse, high waisted skinny jeans, a cardigan and short, high heeled boots. I pinned up my hair and over that am wearing a turban. No makeup makeup and Medieval lipstick.

To go with this I am wearing Tom Ford Noir. I think I am bit too sexy for the office, but Noir just feels so comforting and lovely.

Secret Obsession for the 2nd day in a row. First, it’s plum, then it’s jasmine, then it disappears . . . I was walking around at an antiques shop yesterday and thought ‘mmm someone’s wearing tuberose’ and then I realised it was me 😀 . . . and then it comes back in a woodsy drydown. I don’t get mace or spice, really.

It wears very close to the skin though which is frustrating. Melikes fragrances that are LOUD. Oh well. Nice is nice.

A bit of Bois de Santal by Keiko Mecheri on my left wrist and a bit of Ryder by Ex Idolo on my right.

My head is all over the place today and I’m trying to get it together and focus, but that’s proving difficult. If I didn’t have these scents on already, I might have put on some Sycomore from my new teeny-tiny bottle to see if the vetiver everyone else says promotes focus would help.

Chilly rain here today. DSH Perfumes Chypre – mostly labdanum and moss on my wrists, and a pumpkin candle that mostly smells of wax, not pumpkin.

On the bright side, I’m a day ahead on my word count for NaNoWriMo, and I think I can knock out another 2000 words by the end of the day. I’ve gotten to a place in the manuscript where I can see scenes in my head, and those are easy to write.

Snort! No. No, this is my…. 7th? And before, I was calling it success if I got 50K words down, regardless of whether it was a finished story arc or not. This year, I am focused on getting down all the major plot points and completing the arc.

This may sound stupid, but writing fanfiction over the last 3 years or so has been like doing a creative writing course, and I’m now seeing how to do some more complicated things, like blend current story and backstory, and choosing events that both show/develop character and advance plot. It’s fun.

I have some little bundles of vetiver roots, possibly also from VivaTerra some years ago. The individual roots are small in diameter, and not twiggy or sharp in any way. They feel softer than straw and are not prickly like sisal. I think the mats would be fine. In fact, I may order one!

I remember inviting someone to smell them, and they said it reminded them of a spa in Bali – I think the spa had vetiver mats.

The little bundles smell like straight up vetiver.

SOTD is Bottega Veneta. So perfect! I haven’t been posting lately – life has been weird, with big events both good and bad. Perfume has been important though! Finding just the right fragrance for my mood helps if I’m feeling sad and contemplative. Lately I’ve been wearing a lot of CdG Avignon, Infusion d’Iris, and Tuscan Leather. They just hit the right notes between cozy and moody.

I think I want that mat. I also really like the laundry hamper Robin mentioned above too.

I am wearing Aromatics Elixir today. Wasn’t sure it was a good choice this morning, but is ok now. Someone else (maybe mals?? Not sure) had talked about AE having a note that smelled like pee to them. I’d never experienced it that way before, but I think I got that this morning. I was getting ready for work and I had a couple of moments where I thought one of my cats had peed on something and then realized that they hadn’t… Luckily that subsided pretty quickly. I think it also exacerbated a developing headache, but I took some ibuprophen when I got to the office, so that’s mostly better now too.

      Yeah, it was me. 🙂

Funny enough, I really like AE on paper or fabric if I put it away for a couple days and then bring it back out. However, I don’t generally wear perfume that way, so it’s impractical for personal use.

      Glad your headache’s better.

Hello all – back to posting again as I am back from travels in Granada – I was lucky enough to have a friend take me for a major birthday. It is incredibly beautiful and quite humbling – I hadn’t had an appreciation of the size and beauty of the Alhambra for one thing. And it was 29 and sunny yesterday which is very exciting from someone from London! All that said, today I am again in Noir Epices – which feels austere yet exotic and is becoming an choice I increasingly gravitate to. Might have to consider a small bottle after I use up the generous sample.

I as there, what, two weeks ago? Absolutely loved it as well. And you make me want to retry Noir Epices, I have a 5 ml bottle from the coffret, but it’s in Tallinn. We seem to have similar taste in quite a few things 🙂

      Happy birthday, too!

Thank you! The birthday was in August but as is the way with crazy diaries we just went. Granada is truly lovely though isn’t it and incredibly evocative. Glad that you loved it too and yes do try Noir Epices again- I’d be interested to know what you think and as you say we seem to share similar tastes ????.

That is absolutely a perfect description of it- and I suspect a large part of why I am drawn to it as it feels very thoughtful but also exotic which makes for a great work appropriate scent.

I would like a crisp Spring morning perfume. I wonder if one of the Cartier scents would do the trick? Suggestions please…but something I can try in my local department shop, so ‘mainstream’, the usual suspects.

I like Chanel Cristalle EDP which could do for spring or summer, although the edp is deeper and rounder than the edt, so more Spring-y to me.
Did you get to watch any of that doc on BBC? Curious to know what you think.

Absolutely second that. I’d also suggest Hermes colognes, if your department store carries them? My favourite is Eau de Narcisse Bleu, it’s perfect for spring.

Yes – Hermes colognes are O – for oarsome. I have a couple and enjoy them. Maybe the Van Cleef and Arpels, too…suddenly, work seems quite boring and unnecessary.

Ha – I opted for Un Jardin sur le Nil when I woke up. I have a feeling I have to try the Bulgari scents. I was also thinking I should get my mother to post me back the bottle of Calyx I gave her ten years ago. I guess Pulp is another possibility, now I come to think of it…but neother of those two are quite what I’m looking for. I know what I want (in my head) something that is cold and clear (like a mountain stream) but a little dry (like gin and tonic), a little bit sharp/bitter (but not citrus – maybe chrysanthemum/dandelion), an acid wit (but not metallic) …maybe Arquiste – but can’t buy it here … maybe Yvresse? OK – Cristalle and Bulgari. Maybe I should just do some work…and stop day dreaming.

I still think Cristalle is the best fit, but because you mentiouned dandelion, try TDC Tokyo Bloom if you get a chance. I love it for spring and it’s an interesting take on the cologne theme, plus it has dandelion.

    SOTD = Aftelier Vanilla Smoke

3 sprays from the EDP sample spray and WAH, it was mostly gone after 2 hours but I do get occassion whiffs of vanilla. I will try the parfum nextto see how long it lasts.

I will do a vanilla week and finish it with a cheap thrill vanilla.

SOTD Nirvana Black. Cozy. Had one of those panicky early mornings where I shut off my alarm instead of snoozing it. Had to be up very early for a monthly meeting that I go to in the Bronx and takes me about 2 hours to get there. Ugh. I was only about 10 min late but I’m already exhausted from the rush this am.

I, too, had one of those early morning awakenings that used to upset me so much when I was working. I knew my thinking would be foggy all day and my temper short. Thankfully post-retirement my days are rarely so full that I can’t sneak a nap in somewhere. Tonight I’m going to the symphony so probably will take a short one this afternoon. I’m wearing La Liturgie des Heures this morning, but I’ll probably wear Box of Eels parfum this evening. There is a no-perfume policy but BdI wears close. It’s the symphony and I’ll be dressed up, I have to wear perfume (and high heels)!

Even though I am very excited about my new FB of Chergui, it did not feel like a Chergui day today so I’m wearing 31 Rue Cambon. We will soon have very many cold, wet, and dreary days where I live (as in months of them), which is ideal Chergui weather, IMO. Plenty of time for that. Today is sunny and crisp and so 31RC was calling to me.

Oooh! Have you been to the Indigo Perfumery? They have a nice online selection so I’m thinking in-store will have all of that and then some.

I went to Cleveland twice on business about 18-20 years ago. I stayed at the Ritz Carlton. The building where it’s at had a direct train connection with the airport which made it super convenient.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I have not yet been to Indigo. It’s on the other side of town and online shopping is just so easy (plus I like the anticipation of getting stuff in the mail). Poor excuses, I know. I’d be happy to meet up there with any visiting NST’ers who need a local ambassador!

Black Flower Mexican Vanilla today, from Dame Perfumery, AZ. What was overpowering in the summer is a powdered vanilla treat in fall.

Definitely not makeup powdery, but airy vanilla powder, like you might add to a hot milky drink. This sample will get used up.

Diptyque Eau Duelle. Doesn’t get much love but I adore it in the fall. Very well suited to the warm days and cool nights of late Fall in Los Angeles. There’s a dry dustiness clinging to its citrus-vanilla heart which suits our gorgeous, drought-weary city.

Happy Monday everyone! Today was my 1st day back at work after a week out for a counselors conference. Back on the daily grind. My SOTD is Chloe. I got 2 compliments by 2 different people in Starbucks this morning. Then, several co-workers complimented me as well. I have worn this fragrance several times, but I think it mixes better with my body chemistry in cooler weather. Maybe, I will make it a point to wear this in the Fall and Winter.
