Monday scent of the day 10/19

Posted by Robin on 19 October 2015 184 Comments

View of the Sankoré Mosque in Timbuktu, Mali

Another week begins. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a little dab of L'Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/23, will be Slow Burn Friday: wear the perfume it took you the longest to love, or the longest to buy, or the longest to find.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    In kelly caleche today.
So far I have found homes for all my lonely bottles thanks to the swap post- I really appreciate NST for providing a nice forum to do these types of exchanges.

Cuir de Russie on the left wrist.
    Carthusia Mediterraneo on the right.

Trying to decide what samples to wear when you have numerous decants is quite an olfactive pleasure 🙂

That’s quite a disparate combination, Nick. If I get one, my vote would be for Mediterraneo.

I would love to send some for you. I find it interesting to hear what the same scent smells like to other people.

I love Mediterraneo, and invested in a small bottle over the past summer. It’s just a very happy, sunny scent, and I was hoping you might have a happy, sunny day. 🙂

Ah hah. Indeed, it was also a sunny day in the summer in Capri when I sniffed it and bought it. A very happy time for me!

A cold day calls for something warm like the half-misnamed Feminité du Bois, not feminine but definitely woody, and with a dose of that Lutens dried fruit that makes his work so recognizable. (I bought my bottle in 2012, so it’s been reformulated and doesn’t have the lushness that everyone raves about: but it’s still really good.)

I am wearing Layal perfume oil by Queen Bilqis today. I blind bought this scent based on strong recommendations from two You Tube reviewers. So far It smells sweet and dry. I like it. Time will tell how much. Also, it came nestled into a beautiful red lacquered box in a red and cut crystal bottle that looks like a prism. The bottle actually has a glass wand attached to the cap for applying the oil. Well worth every penny.

I spent a while rummaging through my samples and decants this morning to find Bottega veneta edp, as i’ve had a craving to go back to it, this autumn. Love the apricoty suede mixed with smooth patchouli, but i can hardly smell it half an hour in after 2 generous spray’s on each wrist and one on chest, why they did a lighter version of this one is totally beyond me, (and my perfume eating skin)
Sprayed Gucci Rush next, as they have a similar feel to me, must be the suede/ patch of B.V and peach patch of Rush make them seem similar. I can now cross B.V off my list!

I’m surprised that BV doesn’t last for you. I find it to be strong and Apply it with a light hand. I accidentally oversprayed the first time that I wore it and one of my coworkers complained. Yikes… Now I am afraid to wear it to work.

To me there is a harsh note that keeps me from liking BV. I often wonder if the people who love BV can’t smell that note, or if it just smells different to their noses. It could also be different preferences, of course.

BV smells Terrible on me, like burned vitamins. It’s really bad. Same with Marni and some Burberry scents. Just awful.
Mentioning to say you are not alone 🙂

    • AnnS says:

I find that I can really spray lots when I wear BV b/c it is very soft to my nose. It is so plush! It always wears in a kind of low hum to me, but maybe you are having some sort of blocking issue? I really enjoy BV Eau Legere too – IMHO it is not so much lighter in formula than the original BV, but different smelling. It has more green/oakmoss accords in it that the plummy/apricot BV. I think I also like both versions of BV b/c they are good office fragrances. I wish I could compare it to the SL Diam Blonde, which I’ve never smelled, but read is very similar.

Dame Blonde isn’t nearly as sweet.. It smells more unisex. IMO it has a more noticeable suede note with a hint of apricot.

I also find it to be soft as opposed to a loud fragrance, but not weak. I get that “low hum” too. It reminds me of L’eau D’Hiver which has a soft presence, but I don’t find it to be weak, either.

I should say, I have not seen a bottle for both a reasonable price and a seller I trust…it always seems like they are going for $150+ and from a seller with 2-star ratings!

SOTD SHL 777 Rose de Petra which feels perfect for this cold AM with its fruity-rosy-saffrony-leathery-vanilla goodness. One if my favs at the moment.

I’d never heard of it until someone sent me some unloved rose samples and that was the end of that. It took me a year to buy it though. *She* didn’t like it so there’s hope, I guess 😉 And it was cheaper than an Amouage or TF or some such rationalization.

Love the postcard of Timbuktu! I hope by the time I have the time and resources (why do those two things never come together at the same time!) I can visit the city.

I’m in Bruno Fazzolari’s Five. It is, in summary, a citrus cologne, but interesting enough (petitgrain and citrus peel) that when summer comes back around I might consider it instead of my usual discounted Hermes D’ Orange Verte. N.B. the first blast is very traditional citrus cologne and I was quick to dismiss it–things got prettier and more interesting after the first 10-15 minutes.

Which brings me to my question for the day: What do you do about samples you get/purchase that you like but either for financial or aesthetic reasons are no where near turning into a full bottle purchase? I have 20+ samples of fumes I genuinely like… but I am eternally struggling with not to use them up so I do not have to make a decision about whether to buy another… anyone else stuck in this stupid quandary?!

So first of all I’m curious to hear which you’re on the fence about!

For my two cents tho, I would encourage you to use them freely and then get decants of the ones you do finish off. Even if you really did love all 20 enough to get decants of all of them, well that would keep you fragrant for years! I think very few would even make it to a re-up on the decant–and at that point you’ve winnowed down far enough to consider a bottle. If only I were consistent about applying those rules, I think it would save me money–the decants cost something of course, and the bottles I did finally buy might be more expensive, but I still think the money saved skipping bottles I never needed would be a net win!

(Do tell us what you’re considering tho, maybe I can help you with a decant!)

Only because you asked, this is what it looks like from the top of the fence: For instance, two Taurs I tried recently are Zeta and PHI… both of which I liked, but I don’t even think I want to re-up with new samples…weirdly, Taur’s just don’t stick with me. But then, I also don’t want to use up my sample in case of something! So there they sit, less than 1 ml left in each…. not to be used because I am a freak! Others that I am eking out, and in point of fact enjoy more than the Taurs are my samples of AbdesSalaam’s Patchouli, Costume National Scent, Lampblack, Oeillet Sauvage… and new to the list is now Amouage Sunshine which I cannot see even ordering a larger decant, but I cannot bear to use up the rest of my sample… Just so you know, I do order decants! On my future decant list Eau Primiere (2nd time), Chamade, La Fille de Berlin… and possibly the Neela Vermiere’s I am just now finishing up… which I will absolutely miss! But maybe I will wait and get a new discovery set… And my Chergui is almost gone–but the quandary is should I wait until I can buy a full bottle, or do I order a decant?-which would cost less, but not be economical, and I do love me my Chergui…so meanwhile it is eke out for me…

Eke out or freak out? That is the question. 😕

Yeah, I get this struggle. I keep having to remind myself how much I love variety and therefore a FB does not make sense. I will do a couple samples and then move to a decant and so far that’s worked because I’m always changing it up.

Ah, I see now, there’s a sub-decant list. Hmmmm… I think I still say use them, if you’re in the mood to wear them! I think if something’s gone and you miss it, that’ll be a good indication that it’s worth getting more of; and if you don’t miss it, well at least you got good use out of it while it was still on your mind! I’ve definitely had a couple situations where I hoarded something, and only to find it had lost its appeal for me (or just evaporated!) at that later date I was saving it for!

But in more concrete solutions: for the Chergui, if you don’t mind having a tester, that’s only $53 at FragranceNet right now–less than an 8ml STC decant!

(I do feel your pain on the huge bottles tho. There are several I’d pull the trigger on if I could get it in 50ml–or better still, 30 or 15! On the other hand, I finally went for Zeste de Soleil bottle when it became available in 100ml, just because I was so relieved 200ml wasn’t my only option!! All relative I suppose!)

Yes, this happens to me too. I really aggressively try and purge out any sample that doesn’t catch my attention. But I have two small decorative boxes of “special” samples that are merit worthy, but not FBW worthy (one box is anything, the other just roses). About 4 times a year I get the urge to entertain my nose, sniff the unsniffed, neglected, or have perfumista ennui for something new, or whatever you want to call it. I get that box out and revisit. I grab a few and just start to wear them. This is perfect for me on the days I’m at home doing housework. Only about 20% of the time does a sample I revisit elevate itself to FBW status. And then when it does, I hope they still make it. I’ve got burned a few times with waiting too long to decide (boo-ho all about AG Eau de Monsieur!), but I know there will always be something else coming along. In any case, if I like the sample I’ll put it back into the box, and if not it goes right into the designated ziplock for the next swapmeet. I try not to let it stress me out – when I’m bored, my little samples horde is like a teeny, tiny best fragrance shop ever.

See. That is what I am saying. I too pretty aggressively purge samples that do not catch my attention. It is the ones that do that give me grief! Because, if I “like” something, sometimes I cannot figure out how much. I recently bought an FB of Weekend in Deauville/Normandy…. but NOW I am on the fence about it after I thought I really really liked my sample…Oh the troubles… 🙂

Right now I have very limited fragrance funds so it helps me to be really, really picky. But I have lots of hardly used bottles to show that at other times it was much easier for me to just buy something that smelled good.

Oakland Fresca, neither freak out nor eke out. I suggest you use those things up, and enjoy every fragrant second. Once they are all gone, you may someday find yourself wishing for one or two. If you are able to remember the sample and want it in 6 months or a year or whenever, then clearly you are meant to get a decant (or look for a good deal on an FB, or do a split). If it is gone from your mind, then your decision is made.

I agree, use it up! Then decide if you need a decant, or just another sample. If you use up a decant, then you can decide if you just need a bigger decant or a full bottle. But many things will exhaust your nose by the time you use up a decant, and then you will know you don’t need a full bottle of it, but maybe just one more sample to keep around and try again in 6 months or the next appropriate season. You really will save money in the long run, although I must admin, right now I am getting ready to trade the FB of something I didn’t really need for a bottle of something I am desperately excited about… so, everything works out in the end.. gee, I think I just undid my good advice giving…LOL! Do what you want and don’t fret, is really my motto…

SOTD = Boucheron…I am in the camp that finds this lighter than expected, but very pretty, and I have it in an 8 day rotation right now. My Tiawanese colleague came into my office and said, “Oh, something smells very nice” but when I let her sniff the back of my hand, she thought it was too strong up close….so interesting how people respond differently to a scent…

Boucheron certainly has very lovely sillage. I still have a bottle that I don’t wear so often, but when I first discovered it in the early 90s, I thought it was heaven on earth and wore it quite a bit. I very specifically went to a fragrance counter to find something different than the usual, and it certainly is/was. There really is nothing else like it.

I do find that little funnels help, but I rarely use them just because I feel bad about generating extra trash… Instead, I almost always find myself decanting things one fragrance at a time, and arranging it around my schedule–e.g. decanting something light if I know I’m going to go to yoga during the day, then afterward shower and decant whatever was too strong to risk wearing in a yoga studio :), a third the next morning, etc. I realize this isn’t always practical tho, depending on how big the swap is!

I feel the exact same way about waste and plastic funnels! I have tried in the past to make tiny foil funnels (slightly less wasteful?) but they can slip and move too easily. I suppose something ideal would be a tiny metal or glass funnel that could be washed, and wouldn’t be scent-impregnable.

The funnel def helps. SL bottles are the best as you can use the pipettes.
There is this video on youtube that shows how to use the actual syringe, but apparently you really have to practice and master it – otherwise you can damage the plastic part of the sprayer. But I guess this is what the ‘professional’ decanter types on basenotes use.

I have two MadHats–Limed and SantL. Both are discontinued because his batch sizes are really small, although Ryan has said he might make a version of Limed for summer 2016. SantL is one of the best sandalwood scents I own because real Mysore sandalwood was used. I don’t find Slumberhouse and MadHat aesthetically similar, as Slumberhouse scents strike me as dense and oftentimes quite sweet, whereas MadHats are lighter and much easier to wear.

I emailed Ryan of MadHats and he actually is macerating a Sandalwood frag and will be releasing it in November. The description sounded really good: Bourbon & Haitian Vetiver, Sandalwood, Spices, Coffee Bean, Juniper Berry, Pink Peppercorn, Blue Cypress and Apple, so I will be getting 15 ml of that (super great that he has smaller sizes, I cannot be bringing any more big bottles in the house)

I have 3: Embers (smoky incense), Khus (vetiver), and Royk (woody-incense, currently available). Though I feel like my descriptions are wimpy compared to the scents. I should note that I haven’t found any Slumberhouse scents that I like, but I do like some MadHats. Unlike foxbins I find his scents rather ferocious at times, but then, that isn’t surprising since I usually prefer my scents quieter than she does 😉

Pretty fierce 🙂 I could send you a sample if you like. I’m actually a bit undecided on whether or not it’s too much for me.

It’s OK Ryan is sending me a sample of that one, but thank you

    SOTD = Dior Mitzah

It was very cold this morning. Mitzah hit the spot with warm spicy incensy amber. There’s supposed to be rose in there somewhere but it got walloped by everything else.

I can hook you up with a sample but I will plead innocence if you get hooked. This had been discontinued but made an appearance again a few months ago.

Yes,according to Fragrantica but I have never detected any floral note wharsoever. This makes me think that Mitzah may layer well with a rose fragrance. I may try this with a teesy bit of Rise Cut tomorrow!

Somewhat, but it’s extremely well blended. Idole’s main note, for me, is saffron. With boozy spices, labdanum, touch of incense and orange… very fall.

Cool and cloudy today. Starting on a new contract next week so 3 months break is coming to an end. I read so many comments yesterday about Tauer Phi rose de Kandahar by bedtime I was obsessed.
This morning I was packaging up for swaps to mail out and there it was…The Sample. I put it on my wrists and arms and payed down on the couch and promptly fell asleep. Clearly rose de Kandahar has coma inducing properties on me and must be purchased immediately after returning to work. Closely followed by Naomi Goodsir.

Watching Castle, episode involves a witness with hypernosmia. West Coasters may still be able to catch it. She is eccentric/cranky, an interesting character. (10:30 pm Monday)

Love that show. We get Netflix DVDS because we live in an electronic black hole, so it will be a while before I see this episode. Sounds like fun…
