A quick reminder: our next swapmeet is coming up on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Happy World Maths Day! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm powdered again, in Prada Infusion d'Iris Absolue.
Reminder: this Friday, 16 October, we'll do Powder Puff Friday: wear something powdery!
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows the Prada Saffiano Print Butterfly Satchel Bag, $2500 at Neiman Marcus.
Thanks to the generous & indefatigable hajusuuri, who sent a sample of BdI extrait with my splitmeet purchase, testing that vs. my sample of the edt. The edt does feature, as AnnS described, a sort of woody astringency not apparent in the edt. It’s really strange–sometimes the edt disappears quickly, and other times, I’ll catch whiffs the next morning. The parfum is plusher & less aldehydic, a bit sweeter. Both have their own charms. I’ve enough left to layer them for my next experiment.
Bois des Îles?
I agree with you how the EdT seems to disappear, but it actually turns into the creamy sandalwood. The floral jasmine, neroli, and ylang ylang disappear along with the aldehydes, but what lingers for a long time is the creamy base. The parfum is smoky, plush, and creamy. It just stays like that forever!
Nick!?%$#* 🙂
How happy I am to see you. The other day I scoured the internet for that perfume jargon video I mentioned, and nothing. Petunia finally sent me in the right direction, and I found it: http://www.fragrancebros.com/fragrance-reivews/2015/8/7/sht-fragrance-heads-say
You probably won’t even think it is all that funny, but it was a triumph– of me over my lack of tech sophistication, my search engine and there being too much data in the world–that I found it!!!!!
The IT triumph. Ahhahahah Actually, the ‘niiiice haul’ part actually struck a chord with me the most! I am in that category, clearly.
Anyway, I have not seen it until now. The response notification did not popped up in my email at all :;S even if someone did reply. I have to check more often.
The effort deserves an applaud, again 😀
Hi Nick! I didn’t realize who you are here? Or whatever, but suffice to say that I binged myself on about 15+ of your reviews last winter one evening when I stumbled upon you guys on Youtube. Awesome stuff – I particularly enjoyed the boxer dropper reviews – looking at you Alien. Cheers!!
Uhm.. I think you must have the wrong guy. I have never done a video review, nor have I published any content 🙂
Boxer droppers?! Sign me up! 😉
Nick – sorry – I thought that link above was taking us to your site. Those fragrancebros are very funny anyway. My bad! 😉
I’ve just realised that I did not click on the subscription!
Terrific! So glad you found it. ????
Signed,
Not Nick
I am so happy that it helped. I like to check out my favorite perfume reviewers on You Tube after I’ve read my favorite blogs. BTW, I finally caved for a fb of BDI perfume as my sample was almost gone. I actually felt a bit panicked. It is so beautiful! I like to dab on the perfume and then layer it with the EDT. Hopefully, I’m not making my coworker’s eyes water. ????
I suspect the layered combo will be my preferred iteration!
Interesting. Thanks for giving us that comparison of the two.
Thanks for the shout-out and glad you were able to do a comparison!
Santal Majuscule.
Comfort for the cold. Arm-length sillage that does not disturb neighbouring cubicles.
On a side note, I have managed to haul 4 little vials of Joy, Jicky, Fougére Royale, and First after telling the SA that ‘I am in the Classic Phase’. 🙂 I did not dare ask for Miss Dior, Quelques Fleur, Shocking, or L’Air du Temp, but I should have! What is there to lose, anyway.
Nice haul!!
Well played, Nick!
Bois d’Oud (Perris Monte Carlo)
A brand I have never tried. I think.
Never smelled the perfume, but the name is fun to say out loud!
NO. 19 today, was in need of some spine stiffening for my driving lesson this morning. Mingling nicely with wafts of Silver Iris on my jumper from yesterday. Excited about my almost full bottle of L’air de Rien that’s due to arrive today!
Good luck with the driving lesson!
Thanks!, it went quite well i think (i didn’t hit anything anyway!)
That’s the most important thing.
Good luck with the lesson! I have a license to fly a plane..BUT NOT TO DRIVE.
Go figure.
Thanks!, flying a plane-that must feel incredible.
Really? I am impressed!
I’m a student driver myself! And trying to learn in NYC no less. Hoping to get my license before year’s end. Does this #19 help? 🙂
Hi AnnS,
This is to answer your question about the oud in Oud Palau. The oud is a little bit sharp and noticeable on me when I first spray. But it quickly settles into a slightly boozy leather with a bit of tobacco in there. And there is also a smidgen of camphor and some rose. It isn’t a sweet perfume on me, I get more spice, wood and rose, but it is understated. It actually reminds me a little bit of Amouage Lyric only not as hefty. The oud is present but the perfume overall is so well blended that it plays nicely with the other notes. I hope that helps.
I got a 2ml sample from STC and it’s great but not something I really love. If it sounds interesting to you, I can send it your way.
SOTD is Oud Palau!
The dry down is a little sweeter and a bit powdery anchored by some patch. There seems to be a sort of skank note coming through, not sure what it is but reminds me a little of civet.
Thanks!!! I have always respected Lyric, but I don’t enjoy wearing it. For some reason it gets way too “thick” for me? I don’t know, but something like Lyric lite sounds good. What you are saying also makes me think of Paestum Rose – ish? Definitely sounds test worthy. I like Diptyque a lot and am always hankering to try more.
I actually had to look up what exactly powdery meant in fragrance speak. I then realised that I have quite a few powdery fragrances in my collection. Today’s choice is Divine’s L’Inspiratrice, which, if my memory serves me right, is described as powdery in Perfumes The Guide. I think of it as a soft patchouli rose myself.
Hmm.. powdery conjures an image of iris, sheer floral in the background, or hay, or coumain, or not-so-sweet vanilla to me.
I didn’t quite know what it meant to me, or what it meant in general. Fortunately BoisdeJasmin has a very clear description.
for me, pretty much anything with tonka bean smells powdery,. I have to look up the definition in BdJ. By my own definition of powdery, I have many in my collection.
My first conscious encounter with powder was when I tried Teint de Neige. The only fragrance to make me feel nauseous.
But lots of fragrances classified as powdery are great favourites, so there you go.
Summer hasn’t quite let go here in Denver (will be 85 today), so I am still enjoying my warm weather scents. Today it’s Berdoues Assam of India, my cheerful, bright, can’t-go-wrong lemon tea fragrance.
Envy your weather, and you smell great!
JCrew/ Arquiste No.57 which is currently my favorite fall scent
Seriously considered blind buying that, but I think I’ve done that enough lately. I bet it smells lovely on you though.
I need to try that! Last I checked it was on clearance. Sounds perfect for fall.
That is a wonderful, wonderful scent, and am kicking my self for NOT buying it when it was on sale a few weeks ago (a full bottle was something $20 or something ridic like that.)
Still available on their website I think
Thanks for the tip
I’ve developed a bit of a cold in the past two days, but I can still smell a bit. When I was at my coughing, whiny worst last night, I decided to put on a bit of my dabber sample of Jean Scherrer, because in my hazy brain something green seemed like the “healthy” choice. It did make me feel better even as I laughed at myself.
Infusion d’Iris today, which my wonky sniffer is currently interpreting as too sweet (?) but that’s ok.
Hope everyone is well!
Ugh, get better! And that is funny, but who knows, the power of suggestion can’t hurt.
Exactly. Thanks Robin!
Hope you get well soon Ihadanidea, I often put on Jungle Elephant when I have a cold, it works a bit like Vicks Vaporub (if that is a known reference, it is a mentholated topical cream that is rubbed on the chest). The cloves seem to decognest my trompetting nose!
I definitely know about Vicks, but for whatever reason haven’t used it. Might be time to change that.
Hope you feel better. That is funny about wearing something green because it seems healthy. I’ve done that before too. Having your mind be positive and in a good state helps you recover faster – so whatever works 😉
Glad to know I’m not the only one! 🙂
Or maybe I should have gone for my Azemour les Orangers for citrus/the scent of Vitamin C!
Feel better soon! I struggle with the musk base in IdI – love the opening and middle though.
It’s usually just fine – I think my sniffer’s off.
How are you my rose buddy?
All things are pretty good!
Get well soon! We need you at 100% for Sniffapalooza!
I realised my SOTD, OJ’s Tolu, has a hint of powder. When applied with a light hand it is an easy to wear, comforting and plush oriental.
Such a lovely perfume for this time of the year, and indeed anyway!
I agree about a light hand with Tolu – I have two sample vials of it, and they’ve lasted me for a few years now. Just a tad and it’s perfect. I’ve often thought I should get a bottle….?
I think the travel sprays would suffice! I received a small bottle of the perfume for free, I liked it so much I ordered the EdP somewhat impulsively…. In hindsight not necessary at all as the perfume alone will last me a long time.
I am wearing Serge Lutens Gris Clair today. I ordered small decant, and it is reminding me of the smell of ironing clothes. Heat, steam and lavender. Very nice!
That one was my first Serge love. You smell great.
Getting my hair cut right before a meeting that got seduced (no stupid spellchecker, scheduled!) at the last minute, so I am in Chanel No5 in case the hair cut ends up less successful than the smooth chic bob I am hoping for.
With you wearing the Chanel 5, the spellchecker is correct 🙂
Chanel No. 5 and a smooth chic bob: I suddenly thought of the 1920s flapper. Elegant, yet bold. La Garçonne!
A woman with a perfume backup plan. I like it.
Lovely!
SOTD is Peach Blossom, Violet & Vanilla Dame Perfumery…found a ample in my stash with about a quarter left….forgot how nice this is.
Very appropriate for my office.
I’m wearing Ormonde Jayne Sampaquita. Still smells like laundry detergent to me.
I am really keen to try that but you might have persuaded me to not be too keen!
Ha! Well, go ahead and sample. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on something you might love. And it is nice. It’s just a little clean for me. And can’t really compete with the other florals from OJ.
For what it’s worth, I like it, just not love. It’s in the category of, things I’d love to smell on others but for whatever reason I don’t feel moved to wear it myself.
Real / fresh sampaguita smells very nice. I haven’t yet tried the OJ interpretation from my neglected Discovery Set.
I’ve never smelled the real thing, so I can’t compare. OJ’s version is a little dull.
I agree that it smells “clean.” My husband described it as smelling too much like perfume. Hah!
It’s cool enough for a bit of powder today, so I went for Putain des Palaces. But all day I craved Absolue pour le Soir inspired by The Skank Post, so now that Im home from work I doused myself in it. Aaahhhh… Perfect 🙂
You smell good and “skanky”
Envious!
Love it.
Also, how much fun was that post?
SO fun.
SOTD is Cologne Pour Le Soir. Goodness, do I love honey notes.
After watching last nights debates-I was up late-so the fragrance to wake me up this morning is Chanel eau de Cologne from the exclusifs line
Hmm the few cologne that maintains the classic cologne structure. If only I had the 200 ml bottle to wake me up everday 😀
I am wearing a very rare beauty that is Cocà. This is the first perfume that made me love perfumes years ago. It is an unknown one and very difficult to find. I am very sad that when my bottle is finished, i won’t be able to find it. It is very powdery , comforting and wonderful.
Who makes it?
It is made by Cofci
Thanks, Hera. I’ll have to look it up.
I’m also in iris, but not a very powdery one – Iris Silver Mist. I’m not feeling well and stayed home today. 5 years ago I would never have considered wearing ISM when not on my best form, but these days it seems almost comforting to me. The nose adjusts.
That is a bit more of an earthy iris than powdery one. Maybe because it’s more earthy that it feels comforting. Hope you feel better.
That, and the fact that it’s beautiful and I know it so well by now.
Wish you better Anniky, and you smell beautiful.
I’m already better, although would prefer to stay home tomorrow, too. Unfortunately, this is not an option. I hope you’re feeling better as well?
You smell great! Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you! And you smell wonderful, too.
Get well soon! I tend to wear either Paris or Thé Vert on those occasions. But I can see where Turnips might do the trick as well.
🙂 These are some pretty refined turnips!
Feel better! Knowing you smell lovely is always therapeutic.
Thanks! And you are right, it always helps.
Hope you feel better soon! And enjoy the day off work 🙂
🙂 I did get some reading done, so there’s that.
Get well soon!
I’m planning to, thank you!
Hope you get better soon and meanwhile you smell super
Thanks to your posts from a few weeks back, I went and got me a bottle of Fendi Theorema, which is what I am wearing today!
Oh, I get an enabler pin! Do you love it?
Yes, I do love it. I was shocked I was able to find a bottle of it so easily. I thought it was pretty much impossible to find.
Good to know! I’ve been holding off sampling this one because I have a feeling I will love it and wouldn’t be able to find it.
SOTD is FM’s Musc Ravengeur. Perfect for a crisp Fall day.
I’m getting excited to pull that one out, our weather’s nearly cool enough…
I’m trying En Avion in extrait today. So far it’s absolutely wonderful, and I think it is just a tiny bit powdery, so maybe it will make an appearance on Friday as well. I don’t think I have a lot of really powdery fragrances. Other than Flowerbomb, of course.
I forgot to mention that I had my first “I get it now!” experience last night, with Dune. I have a small sample that I tried maybe a year or so ago and didn’t care much for, and for some reason pulled it out at bedtime last night. And now I understand what all the Dune fans have been going on about! It really is weird-yet-wonderful in the beginning stages (broom! asphalt! something else odd!), and when I woke up briefly at about 2 a.m. (and actually remembered to sniff my arm), it had turned sweeter and more sandalwood-y and even more wonderful.
Dune *is* weird. And really great. My sister once forbade me to wear it because it was “hers,” and although she’s moved on, my SIL wears it now, and I don’t love it enough to break the mental block and buy it – but it really is an interesting thing.
Boringly in Noir Epices again – it just feels right for early mornings before big days of meetings. I am tempted by a 10ml bottle. Trying to resist though and will probably spray some of the Mon Numero 8 which is at work later to try and wear at least some powder.
NOT boring!! Noir Epices is a temporary signature fragrance for you!!
Thank you – I much prefer that angle and yes, it does seem to be becoming one!
Not boring, it’s an intriguing fragrance!
Robin, you inspired me to wear the original Infusion d’Iris. I was going to wear Theorema, but I have a meeting today, and I didn’t want to take the chance on wearing something really strong. Also I’ve read that Theorema is really a cold weather fragrance, and it is still in the 90s in Texas. Maybe I’ll wear it at home this weekend, since it’s just me and the cats.
Jealous of your 90s…I want my summer back! Agree Infusion d’Iris is maybe better in your weather.
Have you tried the Kerosene Unforsaken? I do think it’s like a lightweight sort of Theorema-ish thing.
I’m jealous too. My Infusion d’Iris will have to go into storage until spring. It’s full-on fall here in Ohio.
It’s a perfectly crisp autumn day out. I love it when it’s sunny like this, but with a slight biting chill in the air. Black chiffon shirt and Opus VI full of incense and leather for me today.
Best. Weather. Ever.
It really is. It was fleeting this morning though. It’s all cloudy now, but it’s still really nice. Not too cold at all. I could use a good long month of this weather.
I’m into this look and scent pairing. Well done.
Thanks! I go out for a short afternoon walk with some friends at work. We do it because it’s annoying sitting on our butts all day. Several of us noticed we’re wearing gray and black and one guy said: it’s all reflecting our moods about the weather since it’ll be cold, dark and miserable soon.
I wanted to say: or it’s just the color of our souls, which I thought was funny, but I kept my mouth shut 😉
I would have laughed.
The joke about New Yorkers is that we wear black because there’s nothing darker.
Never heard that – very funny. 🙂
I envy you your weather. That type of weather is my favorite, but in my part of Texas it may not occur until November. Or December…
I can totally relate. I used to live in OK and always lamented how late our autumn/winter weather showed up there. I always made a running joke of it that we had two seasons: summer and January.
Where in OK did you live? I’m originally from Tulsa and have family there. I also have relatives around OKC and in the western part of the state.
I think living in Texas has made me appreciate Oklahoma weather, season-having and all. At least there it actually did start cooling down in September.
I want to wear something dark, thick, smoky, humus-y… but the weather just will not cooperate. It was 92 in my house yesterday–yuck!!!!!
So I shook and banged the dregs of Bombay Bling onto my wrist… not enough to last long, but at least it won’t asphyxiate me when things warm up.
Totally OT, but my mom is in Italy for a month and she likes me to pop by her house occasionally to make sure all is well, and to refill the outside bird-feeder. So there I was, standing in the hall outside her bedroom door, when a giant black thing started scurrying towards me… It looked like a huge spider. IT WAS. I screamed so loud, but then took lots of pictures. I wish I knew how to share them… but if you are curious, I looked it up when I got home and it was a tarantula aphonopelma iodius. Its marking were pretty distinct. I popped a glass on that sucker and put it out in the yard. I have seen tarantulas out in the hills in Northern California, but never ever ever ever in someone’s home!!!!!
I feel very brave, and mildly morally superior for my scientific approach and humanity… can you tell?
‘I screamed so loud, but then took lots of pictures.’ — now that’s ironic.
Run! Don’t turn back. The birds will eat something naturally available!
I had to get it out of the house!
I can’t stop chuckling. Great anecdote! 🙂
whatttt! a tarantula! do they often show up like that, just waltzing through? How do you sleep at night! (I’m from northern europe and all our spiders are tiny and do not scurry). I’m impressed you showed such presence of mind, photographing and freeing the poor thing, I’d have fled without a second thought…
I’ve never encountered a bug quite that big, but historically, if I see a bug above a certain size, I leave the room (in terror) and give it time to disappear so I don’t have to deal with it. You’re far braver than I!
It was a big bug. But what scared the bjizzy out me was how fast it moved!!! It sat very very still once I got the glass over it. But otherwise, those long hairy legs moved.
PICTURES!? Seriously? I do admire your bravery. And it beats post-flooding South Carolina, where they have had alligator sightings. You’re an inspiration, OF.
I feel inspiring. I am imagining my super hero suit…!
Your *scented* super hero suit, no less. Unless your scent is what got the tarantula rushing toward you in the first place. Think they can smell? Scarey.
Holy god. You are very brave. Too much guts to squish, right? We have very many very large spiders where I live, but thankfully no tarantulas. The biggest we get, that I’ve seen is the Hacklemesh Weaver and Wolf Spider, which thankfully I’ve never seen. (((Shuddering))) I hate spiders!
I actually do not mind big spiders, but by big, I mean smaller than one inch! Especially garden spiders that build those beautiful webs. We’ve had a big brown spider living near the end of our curtain rod in our bedroom for months… it never goes more than two inches from the knob on the curtain rod, and we figure it is eating any bugs that slip through the screen. But this one at my mom’s was HUGE and it moved FAST….and was way way too furry to squash. Fortunately, it was quite obliging when I put a glass over it.
Ack. I might not sleep tonight. We get those Wolf Spiders in the house once in blue moon, and I did one time manage to get one with a broom, but mostly I scream for my husband.
I like spiders, but running across an unexpected tarantula is still fairly high on the creepiness list.
Yeah. I don’t usually freak out and scream over spiders – usually scoop them up in a plastic cup and toss them outside – but SURPRISE TARANTULA!!! I might shriek a little.
I think you were very Brave, especially after googling it, very impressive!
Wow! I like spiders right up until the point when they are visibly fuzzy. Then I scream and run out of the room. I am impressed with your presence of mind.
Horrifying. You are brave AND you have successfully steered me away from moving to Northern California. No tarantulas. Never never never.
Very brave. Just reading your story gets my adrenaline pumping!
You deserve to treat yourself for such a feat 🙂
SO BRAVE. I’m too afraid to google-image search for photos (as Robin was saying–just thinking of it, I might not sleep tonight!), but I’m imagining it was pretty large, not like trapping a little guy under a glass! I might be too scared to approach, lest I not quite managed to get the glass all the way around him!! Shudder. Very well done, glad that’s been disposed of!
(Meanwhile, on a less nightmarish topic, how do you like that Bombay Bling? I’ve got to test my sample properly since the bottle is such a big purchase, but in preliminary sniffing, it’s one of the scents I’ve been most excited about in quite a while!)
So, about two years ago I got the NV discovery set of 10 (15 ml?) sprays of Bombay Bling, Mohur, and Trayee, and I really like all of them. I don’t know what I’ll do about finishing BB… I really cannot see buying a full bottle, especially at the price… but I suspect I will really miss this one. I don’t know if the discovery sets are still being offered…but if they are, I think I will hold out a little while and then just repurchase the three again–as they have given me lots of pleasure! I never tired of BB, and it has many facets.
Oh yes she is still doing that set (now includes Ashoka, so 8ml x 4 for 125 Euro), and if you like at least three, I think that definitely makes sense–even if Ashoka didn’t suit you, I’m sure it’d be very swappable. Well in the meantime, let’s stay in touch about it–I suspect I may end up looking to split off a few decants in order to make a bottle feasible, so if you wind up wanting a bit to tide you over! 🙂
Yes! If you host a split, I am in for 10 or 15 ml, no doubt (well, if I haven’t folded and repurchased the discovery set by then–I did not like Ashoka in fact. But I’ve spent a little bit of time with Pichola , and liked it.)
I
Oooh well ok then, clearly I’ve got to get on my Bombay Bling testing to make a decision about this! 🙂
(I thought Pichola was very pretty, too–haven’t tried on skin but just from sniffing test strips it might be my next-favorite from the line.)
Ugh, 92 in the house is AWFUL. Hope you get some relief soon.
That is freaky! When I lived in OK we’d always get tarantulas in our backyard, but never in the house. You are seriously brave to have dealt with that. I’d gone running (and screaming) for the hills!
I know. I am quite chuffed with myself! 🙂
You sure deserve a couple badges, for bravery and decency towards scary bugs. Way to go.
Congratulations! We get smallish brown tarantulas at our place, occasionally. Dunno what their proper name might be. Also smallish brown scorpions, I hear their sting is no worse than a bee sting, but I’d prefer never to find out.
… and yes, TIRED of the heat here in NorCal. Not only was it 92 degrees out, but the power failed at 5pm, so: hot AND no a/c. boo. Gimme fall!
errgh.. I don’t know what I would do if I encountered a tarantula. I mean, we have roaches here that small children could ride around (and I don’t like those either, especially the flying ones.. *shudder*), but I’ve only seen small spiders around here.
I don’t know what terrified me more, the thought of your encounter with the::::: shudder ::::: tarantula or yesterday’s ::::: shudder ::::: skanky skank post and comments!
OF, you totally deserve to feel to feel very brave, and mildly morally superior for your scientific approach and humanity! I would have jumped back, screamed, and then (heart still pounding) taken lots of photos. The few tarantulas that I have encountered (all outside) have not moved very fast, so a fast-moving one indoors would really freak me out. The hardest part for me would be carrying it. Usually, when I trap spiders and take them outside (the times that I don’t ask my husband to do it), their weight doesn’t really register. A tarantula’s weight would register!
For a video of a dancing spider that is wee (an eighth of an inch) and rainbow colored, see the video titled “Peacock Spider 7 (Maratus speciosus) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_yYC5r8xMI.
I’m in vintage Cabochard edt! We found a forgotten bottle when we were cleaning out my grandma’s house this summer and as she already had a bottle and is more of a Rochas Femme lady anyway, she gave it to me. It’s taken me this long to actually wear it even though I love it because it just feels like somebody else’s property! By now it’s been hanging out on my perfume shelf long enough it’s matured through osmosis into being part of my collection. It’s pretty gorgeous! Dark and leathery and green.
It seems I’m not terribly good at noticing powder notes, so this week’s friday is a challenge. I’ve never thought of the iris absolue as powdery so I’ll give it a whirl later and sniff thoughtfully.
Wearing CJ Scents Boozywood today, so creamy and gorgeous, perfect for a perfect fall day. Have a great day everyone.
SOTD is Coco extrait b/c it was time with cool weather, and today I have to lunch with ladies who lunch, so it seemed appropriate.
Now, say, ‘luncheon’ 😀 😀
😉
Coco extrait… hmmm… now that is something I should keep a look out for. How does it compare to the edp?
PS My EDP is from about 2004.
When push comes to shove after about 1-2 hours, it smells exactly the same as the edp. It actually wears a bit softer b/c I don’t ever EVER have to reapply when I put on a little of the edp, but sometimes I want to reapply the extrait after about 5 hours. Maybe I just like handling the bottle, lol. But if you have the edp, its pretty much the same experience via smell.
I’m wearing a dab of I Miss Violet, which is not especially powdery, on one wrist, and a dab of Iris Cendre on the other. I just received a sample of Iris Cendre and tried it last night (after reading Annikky’s and others’ comments on it) and somehow the greenness of it reminded me of I Miss Violet so I thought I’d compare. I wish I got more tobacco from IC but I’m liking it quite a lot, unfortunately.
Narciso for Her today.
Good one!
Tom Ford Santal Blush.
Nice, for all but the warmest weather.
Off to file a preliminary campaign financial report for The CEO (my nickname for teh hubs), who is running for county Board of Supervisors… I THINK I’ve done it all right… I HOPE… If not, the registrar will help me straighten it out.
Am wearing vintage Jolie Madame extrait for focus.
Oy, good luck with that! Local government is where all the action is. Zoning Hearing Board is really where the *power* is, lol!!
Good luck to you both. 🙂
31 Rue Cambon for me today. This is the second time I’ve worn it and it’s really growing on me. There’s a note that reminds me of Parfum de Therese… what is it? Plum? Anyway, I’m starting to see what all the fuss is about!
I put on Vanille 44 today. It smells so good, I might have to put just a little bit more on.
I just purchased a bottle! So good.
Mmmmm and I find it layers very well with ambers.
That sounds like a really great idea, which ambers have you layered? I think I’m going to give that a try.
Wearing my nearly-untouched bottle of TF Violet Blonde, prompted by the upcoming powder project and by last weekend’s query about the proper size of the collection–wanted to retest before I put this one on the chopping block, and alas, tests confirm that it doesn’t suit me nearly so well as I wish it did! I didn’t buy it blind, but it was one of the first bottles I picked up (luckily, at a discount), and it’s interesting now to try to remember the rationale for buying a bottle I didn’t like well enough to wear from the start! I think given my limited experience with perfume, it was really exciting to find something that was so clearly well-executed, and distinct from what most of my peers were wearing–and I didn’t really know that I might find bottles for which both of those things were true, but which I also enjoyed a whole lot more! I’ll admit also that Violet Blonde pretty well epitomizes the style of scent I was looking for at the time, in terms of projecting Personality and I’m Grown-ness, whereas now I feel a little more like–whatever, who cares about being grown, pass me the CB Chocolate Box 😉
I went through the very same thing with Violet Blonde! The only thing that stopped me from buying the bottle was that, at the very last moment, I sniffed another scent in passing and fell instantly in love. I think I’ll dig out my sample for tomorrow and see where I stand all these years later.
Oh yes, please report back on what you think of it now! I was hoping my opinion would have changed over time–maybe that I’d grow into something that felt difficult to wear earlier?–but, if anything, the only thing that’s changed is my ability to say, “I think this is very well done, but I still don’t want to wear it!” What was the scent that saved you?? I think maybe the other bottles I was picking up at the time really sunk me–I had very little access to niche, early on, and so the other best things I could find were notably much less sophisticated–likable but not very complex nor made with very nice ingredients–and I think I could tell that this was a lot better… Wish I’d found something very good and very likable earlier!
Believe it or not, the pretty little bottle that caught my eye on the bottom shelf in a corner of Sephora was Shalimar. I didn’t know anything about it other than the name, and at the time, I thought violet was my favorite note (because I hadn’t had much exposure to other notes I could consistently identify) and hence felt compelled to buy violet scents. Yay for gaining more experience and finding things that actually bring us joy!
Ring me up if you are interested in swap/sale of your VB!! anneroosie at hotmail dot com !!!
SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga
Starting my Powder Puff Friday early. Technically, No.19 EDP on Monday and Tuesday also qualify as powder, but I would categorize it as green rather than powdery if I can only choose one descriptor.
Bvlgari Black today, along with a cozy sweater and large coffee. Mmm!
Oh man that sounds perfect.
(Ha it’s actually somewhat hilarious how INCREDIBLE everyone else’s perfume suddenly sounds when I’m wearing something I don’t like! I’m sorta determined not to wash mine off because for crying out loud do I really consider one of my own bottles a scrubber?? But hrmpf, it’s making me a little cranky and VERY envious of your Bvlgari Black!)
When I hear what everyone wears each day, I wish I had 6 arms! Indian goddess like….. I get inspired for the next day.
I know what you mean. Violet Blonde and i don’t get along, but sadly my Black faded quick and the leftover Coco from my jacket overpowered. Not a terribly combo, for sure.
Anyway! Not enough skin, too many bottles, need more time. The Perfumista Lament!
Commando, since I got the worst sinusitis.
Ugh so sorry. Feel better! Do you do allergy meds for them? (Forgive me if we’ve already discussed this, I’ve just become such an evangelist about it now that I FINALLY have something that works!)
Thank you, CH. They put me on antibiotics for 10 days…
Hope you get better fast! If you don’t have good luck, do ask your doc about adding allergy meds. I was sick as a dog with sinus infection + bronchitis last fall, and quite irked when they wanted to treat with allergy medication for what was clearly an infection–figured they were just trying to hold back on antibiotics–but after multiple courses of antibiotics, it was finally the allergy meds that did the trick! Something to do with reducing the inflammation. In any case hope you feel better fast!
Sometimes the cure is almost as bad, but it does help. Get well soon!
Blech — do get better!
Thank´s Robin, I´ll try.
Argghhhh… painful and exhausting!
Totally. Sao Paulo´s polution sucks.
Feel better soon!
Thank you.
That is horrid, hope you get better soon!
Thank you, austenfan. My sinuses have to understand I´ve got to participate on powdery Friday…
Hi solanace, would you consider using a neti pot? They work great if used daily to remove pollutants from your sinuses. My DH uses his faithfully and almost never gets sick anymore. The key is using it daily. I am prone to sinus infections also so I know how awful you must feel. I hope you feel better soon.
Lol! Exactly.
I have the same thing. antibiotics for me too, plus an inhaler for my lungs. the worst part is being so tired. I hope you feel better soon.
I’m sampling Iris Cendre today. It’s rather carrotty on me but with a sweet edge, like a carrot pudding. There’s a touch of cedar but I’d like more. It’s nice but it’s not going to dethrone ISM as queen of the irises.
Oh, sounds like I do need to try that one!
It turned powdery after an hour or so and despite prolonged sniffing, I didn’t detect any smoke or pipe tobacco notes. It’s been about four hours since I applied it and it’s almost gone. Good thing, too, as I don’t need any more on the “to buy” list.
Good morning, NST everywhere. I’ve woken in a right snit, with a crick in my neck, a throbbing headache, a raw throat and the sense that I had a dream that wasn’t pleasant. Anyway, I put on 19 Parfum, because of its good-for- everything superpowers, and now I wish I hadn’t. I wish I had worn something sweet and enveloping: Rahat Loukoum, perhaps. Or something woody: Feminite du Bois? Anything else would be better today. Bother! See what I mean? I’m just plain contrary! It’s as well I’m staying home alone to mark. I’ll probably get so sick of my own horrid company that I’ll snap out of my mood.
Oh dear. Can you go back to bed?
Ha! If only, right!
I could mark on my laptop in bed, but it will slow me down. On the other hand, perhaps I should pack up the purrs and a pot of tea and head for the bedroom. I don’t know…see, not only crabby, indecisive too! But thank you for the kind thought.
I have a question Waterdragon. I am sure I missed it before, but I noticed you mention about “marking”. What do you mean by that? I must not be getting it.
Would you say “grading”, perhaps? I’m correcting, evaluating my students’ assignments and assigning marks. We say marking, probably, because that’s what we do: we used to make marks all over them in our illegible scrawls, but now we mark them up with our comments and suggestions electronically. Better for the students! I’ve always initialled my final comment, and I had a student come to me one day asking what she could do to pass the next assignment. I was surprised, because I was pretty sure I’d given her a B, but it turns out my writing was so awful that she had taken my initial –F– as her grade! I switched to fountain pen after that (slows me down) and took more care, but there’s no doubt that the students are profiting more from our typed comments.
Crabby and indecisive then to go hand in hand for me, crabby ‘cos I can’t decide, can’t decide cos I’m crabby. Put bed & purrs sounds wonderful
OK. Now I understand the marking. Thanks. I thought it had something to do with your health. If I remember correctly you are not from the United States so I thought it was a term from somewhere else.
Very late reply & so hopefully you are already put to right, but even 10 minutes back in bed always makes me feel better!
I vote for a hot bath/shower, a pot of tea, at least one purring feline, and a cuddly perfume. Maybe a short stroll to ease the strain? Working with a neck knot and headache is just gonna make you grumpier, and that’s going to make your muscles tense even more, AND you’ll be more effective if you feel well. There’s a fine line between toughing something out and being grumpy-stubborn (which is a particular kind of stubbornness, practiced mostly on oneself, that makes a bad mood worse and often causes stubbed toes, strained muscles, collapsed shelves, and other calamities ) 😉
Hope my unsolicited advice isn’t making you more grouchy. I do hope you feel better soon!
A gentle walk always loosens my stiff neck and shoulders. Also one of those lovely heat packs filled with flax seeds.
MikasMinion, I could never be grumpy towards such kind thoughts. In fact, I know you’re right: I’m out of sorts physically, and if I give myself a break, I will, as you say, be able to work harder, longer and better after it. I’m employing a combination of all the good advice that lovely NST has given me: I’ve got the warm pack, I’ve taken pills, I’ve drunk tea, and since I was undressing anyway, I took another shower and washed off 19. I now smell of slightly herbal body lotion. The cats are in a furry puddle on my feet, and as you can see, I’m not grappling with the assignments. I might very easily fall asleep…
Hope you are feeling better.
Thank you, am feeling better, and am drifting sleepily in and out of the day. Nice. Dakkie weighs a ton, though!
Le Labo Iris. Not the most powdery of irises, but these samples aren’t going to wear themselves.
(actually it’s perfect, maybe, for the rare sunny fall day here)
I stole a dab of my Mom’s Coco EDT from the mid to late-nineties. I love this one, even if it isn’t very me, and wish she had a backup bottle since the current formulation is completely different. The current EDP is closer but still not the same. Wonder if the formula was that wildly different or if it has just improved with age?
Packs a punch in any case, I have to spray on a cotton ball and gently dab to avoid completely skunking myself out. Thank heck I’m working outside today in the breeze, in this environment it is gorgeous!
The old edt of Coco is just the best, and my personal favorite. It seemed that the formula was pretty consistent until somewhere after about 2008? But what’s on the counters now is definitely different. I’ve only ever put on the smallest bit – I ususally spray a tiny puddle on the back of my wrist and dab around the neck, etc, from that. Just a little bit and it’s perfectly gorgeous. Too much is room-emptying.
It’s different. I used to despise the stuff, and the current version I merely dislike in a vague sort of way (I have trouble with orientals).
Sorry to see so many NSTers suffering from colds and sniffles – I’m still recovering from the worst cold of my life (no exaggeration!), at least I’m in good company.
Hoping everyone gets better soon! Pretty much everything is better with perfume, so,it seems particularly cruel that a cold can take away the ability to smell 🙁
I had a very NST day today! In reverence to the NZ folks, I bought a diffuser at Tjmaxx because it said “kowhai,” a word I have only ever seen here! The brand is New Zealand Botanist and it boasts sweet line and mandarin, so I thought I could not go wrong. Then, I found a bottle of Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights for $10, so that seemed like a sure bet for a blind buy. I am headed to NYC (by way of NJ) for the Avon Breast Cancer walk and plan to bring either Diptyque Geranium Odorata or Le Labo Bergamot as a pick me up. SOTD is vintage and gorgeous Shiseido Murasaki!
TJMaxx twin! Guess what I just bought at lunchtime… yup, Fancy Nights for $10. We’ll have to see what we think, won’t we?
Hope your walk goes well!
Thanks!!!!
Katrina, I do hope the Kowhai perfume lives up to the beauty of the tree. Kowhai covers itself with gold at this time of the year, and tui sit in its branches drinking the nectar, sometimes behaving as though they’re drunk. The tree is a glory of spring here. Ummm…not wanting to sound teacherly or impertinent or anything, because you probably already know this, but you would pronounce kowhai as “ko-fie”. The “o” is short, like “cough”, but rounder, tending a little towards “cor”; equal emphasis on both syllables.
I’m hopeless! I wish I could do phonetic symbols on this stupid iPad!
Fascinating! I did not know that! But it does smell lovely!
Such a beautiful, crisp, sunny fall day here in the inland NW. Not sure if it’s “right” for the season, but I’m wearing Thierry Mugler: oh the Womanity! Kind of warm and salty. (Resisting further burning blimp references.)
You made me laugh.
SOTD was Mohur extrait, a good fit since I had dressed up a bit. SOTE is Terre d’Hermes-I own a FB but it’s been a long while since I wore it last.
I’m wearing L de Lolita Lempicka today. I like it, though I think it might be just a touch sweeter than I really wanted. I mostly just decided to wear it because I was feeling indecisive this morning and I think it’s been a long time since I’ve worn it.
SOTD was Passage d’Enfer. Just right.
Very late, but DK Gold is still with me–and I need it. Quit a longtime freelance job today because my “keeper” was just getting too darn weird.
Sotd is Encre Noir. Today was the first day for one of my hand knit sweaters…the combo seemed to work.
(Cue the Twilight Zone theme) Follow your instincts, girl.
I wore Lyric today. It just seemed perfect for a crisp fall day in New England.
BTW, I think it was Angela who recommended Smoky Poppy from BBW, I am so happy I bought it. I really love it. I think that I’ll buy another set for backup. Thanks Angela!
I thought it was Jessica and it was actually from The Body Shop (I made a boo boo on my confessions list).
Oops. I should have double checked. I am sure that you are right, Thank you for correcting my error hajusuuri and thank you Jessica!
