Monday scent of the day 10/12

Posted by Robin on 12 October 2015 189 Comments

Chanel Coco money clutch

Yes, it's another Monday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Chanel Misia.

Reminder: this Friday, 16 October, we'll do Powder Puff Friday: wear something powdery!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the embroidered lambskin clutch is from the Chanel Paris / Dallas Metiers d'Art 2014 collection. I think it was originally $14,000.

    Mitsouko EdP.

In the mood for a classic chypre 🙂 It is one of the two scents marketed to women that I have beside No. 19.

Last I smelled No.5 and Joy in extrait, I have been meaning to get my hands on them, but still unsure of how full-blown floral they would become. Are they going to be like, say, Gardénia, Carnal Flower, or California Reverie?

Joy I would certainly call a full blown floral!

Joy is definitely full force, though extraits are always softer. If you want the whole Chanel suit, you need the EdT.

Ohhh. Actually, quite the opposite. What I most enjoy about these old-school classics is the part where they tend to linger in the base forever for me to smell them. The EdT was a bit of a blast to my face :s

About to dab on some Ryder by Ex Idolo, a sample I picked up at Twisted Lily. I have been loving this this past week, and trying to convince myself to get a decant, not a bottle. I figure I should be past the full-bottle-buying phase, but I still feel the desire for bottles every time, despite cost and the full knowledge that I will never finish them all….rationality is not always my forte.

Hope you’re all happy and well!

It’s always so difficult deciding between a decant and a bottle at times. Rationality is rarely taken into account when it’s something we really want – that’s just pure subjective love of satisfaction.

I just for for the FB if I like it enough. I tend to douse myself anyway, so I do go through small bottles somewhat quickly.

Hope you have a wonderful day.

        🙂 – thanks Jenkr!

Maybe I just need to start applying more generously. Half the time no one can smell me anyway, and often I can’t smell myself. Dousing myself would justify a few more purchases….:)

liberal application is always the way to go – you won’t experience the full range of the perfume experience, until you have it on your wrists, your neck, your hair and your clothes… 🙂

          In My Humble Opinion….

The choice between bottle and decant is a hard one. The only thing I can say in support of bottles is that if, for some reason, in a few years, you are bored of it or it becomes totally neglected, it is much easier to sell a used bottle than a used decant…. It’s a tough call.

The thing is, if you are not totally sure, get a decant.
Less $$, less guilt, and if having the decant sitting there going “Nya, nya, nya, nya!” convinces you, you need the FB, you can get the FB, and
        1. take the decant to work,
        2. give the decant to a deserving friend or family member who needs to be converted, or
        3. swap it for something else you want to try in a swap meet…
unless of course, the bottle is 65% of your desiring, and it is about to be discontinued, or you are moving to the Galapagos Islands for a 10 year research project or something like that. 🙂

If ONLY I was moving to the Galapagos…but no, the bottle is not such a huge part of my desiring. I just instinctively lust for bottles of pretty scents instead of decants for no good reason. As I said before, it isn’t rational, as there are so many things going for decants when you’re someone who owns more than 20-some bottles.

I wore 1 spritz of Ex-Idolo Ryder – it was quite potent to my nose so I chased it with Vanille 44. I got a sample from a fellow NSTer. Have you tried Rania J. Ambre Loup? That is FBW. I just have a decant right now.

I’m wearing EL amber ylang-ylang! Every time I put it on I remember Victoria’s review of it over at BdJ, where the combination was compared to hot chocolate with whipped cream. It’s such a spot-on comparison!

For Ropion Friday I wore alien eau extraordinaire from a forgotten sample. It was horrid! True scrubber essence, abrasively clean, with a searing quality, probably best for people who want to smell like a bathroom scrubbed sterile. I washed it off and it lingered, naturally. Of course only after this disaster did I notice Ropion also co-authored Dune, one of my favourites. SIGH.

I love all the Ropion scents i have tried, about 5, haven’t tried any of the Alien’s tho. Didn’t know he worked on Dune, which i haven’t tried either, what’s it like?, its supposed to be quite wierd isn’t it? (i equate weird with interesting)

Dune is the result of the collaboration of 3 perfumers: Jean-Louis Sieuzac, Dominic Ropion and Nejla Bsiri-Barbir, so it’s not just a Ropioin scent.

Dune is a pretty interesting scent, yeah! It’s a beach scent to me (but my beaches growing up were bare granite cliffs with tufty sharp grass and tough, tiny flowers, so it might not conjure the same image to you) – it’s lavender-y and ambergris-y, pretty strong but not heavy. It’s definitely not for everyday for me, but it’s a favourite for sure!

I didn’t know he helped on Dune, either. Dune is a funny one, much of the time, I don’t really like it, but I always love it, you know what I mean?
Course, I have to admit, when I think of Dune, I do not think of beaches, I think of Sting in that little Speedo with wings he wore as the evil bad boy in the movie, Dune… ah, there I have dated myself, I think…. 🙂

Ohhh would you say they’re very alike? I don’t really remember Cinema other than that it’s very mimosa-y and sparkly and that I liked it a lot (but not enough to buy a bottle, as it were), but I haven’t considered it as similar to Amber Ylang Ylang! I’m gonna have to try them next to each other… Yummm

I had Amber YY before I had Cinema. I remember after I got the Cinema, I felt like it was a better version of Amber YY – better blended? – even though I also liked Amber YY. Cinema just kind of pushed it out of the way as ultimately more wearable for me, maybe b/c it is less sweet? I don’t remember mimosa in Amber YY per se, but just the overall effect of the fragrances was close enough. It’s been a few years for me though. In hind sight I wished that I got the Amber YY when they had the parfum version around. I guess it just kind of disappeared.

Today I was rummaging around in my sample tray and found a small bottle of vintage femme perfume that I forgot I had. It is beautiful dusky spice and luscious apricot for a gorgeous fall day. Amouage Sunshine is similar but has nowhere near the depth and understated beauty of Femme. I think this will be my go to this week.
So I caved on my resolution to not buy and got a couple of small decants from STC that were on special. Oud Palau and Cardamom Mimosa were my choices based on what some of you have said about them here. They should arrive in the mail this week.
    Happy Monday everyone!

Persona by AbdesSalaamAttar or whatever the brand/site name is. It’s a gorgeous vetiver blend with a sunniness yet also an earthy rootiness. While I see many vetivers as some kind of green/brown/grey shade, Persona is to me peridot green.

    And for bed: Bang.

Lovely choice Anniky, and always a good feeling to buy a bottle that has been in your mind for a long time. Can relate a little too well to your inner monologue, (re) testing two irises today, Love les Carottes and La Pausa. I (still) love both and may jump in, esp. as La Pausa seems to be on the chopping block (or is this marketing gossip?). I know it is found wanting in the longevity department, but for me that is not a deal breaker, I actually like to re-apply, or have the skin vacuum after a few hours to apply something else. Hope you will report a bit more on Iris Cendré.

La Pausa may be discontinued? Aiee! I had no idea! I’ve been drifting and out of thinking about getting a bottle, and now you gave wonderfully focused my attention on ways and means to do just that! Like you, I don’t mind reapplying if I need to– I like it, in fact.

I don’t mind the reapplication, but it annoys me when I cannot really smell a scent. That said, I have a bottle of La Pausa and love it. I personally don’t take the discontinuation rumors too seriously, but you never know, of course.

I must dig out my Carottes sample. And I’ll try to form some coherent thoughts on Cendre.

In Noir Epices today, it is a lot quieter than I thought but also emits a glow which really lingers – feels very elegant and the lack of sweetness makes it very work appropriate and thoughtful.

Noir Epices is a very distinctive scent, and an interesting twist; a non sweet oriental.

Morning, everyone. It’s too early for me to have a SOTD, but I know what it will be: 31 Rue Cambon. I’ve been awake for hours, drifting idly around in my head, and among the hazy notions I’ve wandered past, 31RC became and stayed solid. Clearly, it’s a meant thing for today…what isn’t so solid yet is the staffing for next year and whether I will buy a particular jacket, very fitted, nice lines, slightly interesting cuffs, good fabric for this season, in a deep-but-bright rose pink. I love the shape, but honestly, pink? I just dunno.

Mmm, pink. That. It’s not a young pink, but I’m not sure that doesn’t make it worse. Four o’clock in the morning decisions are the hardest!

What’s your workplace like? I’m in favor of pink but maybe moreso in creative/dressy-casual workplaces–I’ve never quite been able to get into the “bright colored jacket over a conservative black skirt, in a sea of conservative black suits” thing. (Although more power to those who can!)

Honestly, at our place I could wear anything but my pyjamas, and some days, probably even them…I usually try to wear my own version of edging-towards-formal when I ‘m actually lecturing or in the classroom, but that interpretation involves lots of colour and texture. The rest of the time, I wear what seems good for the day I’m dealing with. This small hours dilemma about how I see myself. Pink hasn’t been part of me before, and I generally feel happiest in cool colours, but this jacket surprised me when it started flirting with me, and it looks surprisingly OK on.

You know, I think Femme did its thing really effectively for me. I was prepared and determined, shored up by a good smell and my red boots, and the difficulties were subdued more easily than I had expected. The meeting was over in about twenty minutes– we’d allowed an hour! Short is the best kind, in my opinion.

Pink can be great, if it’s the right shade. If it is a good color to pair with flattering neutrals such as beige and gray, I say go for it. If it doesn’t complement your coloring or fit in your existing wardrobe, you may want to give it a miss.
I have several gorgeous things in my closet that I’ve held on to for years and have never worn because they don’t work with anything else. Don’t be like me 😉

It might need a bit of thought, but I think I can wear pink. The lady in the shop liked it on me, and she’s always brutally honest with me. She comes from up north like me, and we are very inclined up there to point out that the toheroa is under size, so I trust her opinion. And yes, I can work it in with other things…I’m going to buy it, aren’t I? A Decision Has Been Decided, and now I think I’ll make a pot of tea and give Dakkie-Dog-Hoople-the Cat five Temptations to celebrate. Thank you, everyone.

There is a horrible smell in our house. I think a tiny body of some sort is decomposing in a wall someplace, my husband thinks the wind is blowing some kind of exhaust in. It kept me awake last night and is driving me crazy. Oh, and our washing machine just quit in the middle of a load of much needed socks. I think I might be a touch crabby today 😉

It dawned on my husband and myself that she was a leggy ginger, and Pond was named. Besides, it’s fun to say, “Come along, Pond” in a Doctor-ish manner 🙂

We had that problem–the great PONG (not be confused with the great Pond of course). I shared our crazy story on NST when it happened. The short version is that it wound up being a tiny mouse that had found its way inside the motor mechanism of our fridge… and sadly did not live to tell the tale… It was HORRIBLE… you have my sympathies. The only thing that helped was keeping every door and window open as long as possible.

Dr. Peter Blood: Nuttall, me lad, there’s just one other little thing. Do you think you could find me a good stout piece of timber? About so thick and so long?

Honesty Nuttall: Yes, I think so.

Dr. Peter Blood: Then do so and lash it to your spine – it needs stiffening. Courage! We’ll join you at midnight.

Sounds like I the intoxication of fame, nerves, and white wine talking – which could be Rihanna’s latest, RiRi, as sniffed by Isobella on Fragrantica:

“This one is a boozey sweet vanilla. A little more of something (perhaps a mash of florals and a touch of citrus) when first sprayed but really the vanilla and rum reign throughout, especially in the dry down this is like a cream vanilla cocktail or alcoholic drink of some sort.”

How is the staying power of Fille en Aiguilles on you? I can barely smell it on myself after a couple of hours

I get good lasting power out of it. I put it on before I left for work this morning, and it’s still going strong as I get ready to head home. If you lose it after a couple of hours, that makes me think you might be anosmic to one or more ingredients.

Question: does anyone know if TF Violet Blonde has been d/c’ed? I was thinking of selling my bottle (after this weekend’s poll and the brutal confrontation with how many bottles in my collection I nearly never wear!), but now I’m not seeing at any of the usual retailers, and the thought that it may not be so easily replaced has me second-guessing…

Well, it’s not listed on the TF site, if that helps…

I have been told by an SA a few months ago that it is discontinued. You should probably save your blonde until you find a better one in the future. 🙂

TF Violet Blonde is indeed discontinued! I regret not getting the small 1 oz bottle when I had the chance… I’d hang on to it!

I’m sampling A J Arabia Black I today. I find that the sandalwood in it really comes together well with the other ingredients. It has cardamom and cinnamon, which like and I’m enjoying this one.

I need to actually sample those properly. I ordered the sample pack for Salome and gave the Blacks a quick dismissive sniff from the vial. I may have tried one, but not in the right mood to evaluate it fairly.

Leaning on Cartier L’Heure Brillante after 4 hours of sleep. Oy! So far so good…the cloud of greens has kept me from nosediving to the keyboard.

An awesome NST splitter tucked a sample of Lyric Woman into a package for me, and since I am facing a grey day of chores pre-work, I thought I’d try it. I am not really a *rose* person but this is creamy, and somehow also natural/vegetal with some incense, too.

Jumped on the autumnal Mitsouko extrait bandwagon. Yesterday, reveled in long walks and BK Liaisons Dangereuses, which may be my all time fall favorite.

Forgot to mention: just listened to this interview with Donna Karan on Fresh Air about her new book, My Journey:

      http://www.npr.org/2015/10/12/447116879/donna-karan-on-motherhood-fashion-and-designing-the-perfect-pair-of-jeans

Apparently, it was business partner and husband Stephan Weiss’s idea to branch out into cosmetics and perfume, which he developed as well as designing the notorious bottles.

Strange, tragic story: Mr. Weiss died of lung cancer in June 2001. Her next show was scheduled for their 18th wedding anniversary, September 11, 2001, and she had planned to feature some of his sculptures. Of course, she canceled when planes hit the World Trade Center. And the City called to ask if they could use the Armory, which she had rented for the show, thinking hospitals wouldn’t have space for all the wounded, but “they didn’t even need it” because most of those who didn’t get out in time to walk away were killed.

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned it yet, but today’s not just another Monday, here in the U.S. it’s the Columbus Day holiday! Celebrating all things Italian today on Keep-It-Simple Monday: Inspired by the blood orange sparkling soda imported from Italy that jumped into my cart this weekend at the grocery store, my SOTD is Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange. Gorgeous weather here today, we stopped midafternoon for gelato – ‘Real cream, Real sugar, Real Italians’ (paciugo.com) – and will be dining this evening on risotto and toasting Buon appetito! with Italian red wine.

I love Chanel’s Misia, beautiful iris and violets.
Today’s scent is Le Labo’s Fleur de Oranger 27. Pretty realistic orange blossom with great staying power.
