Friday scent of the day 10/9

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2015 161 Comments

Caron perles

Is everyone happy it's finally Friday? Our community project for today: wear a fragrance from perfumer Dominique Ropion, if you have one.

What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I chose Caron Aimez Moi, which I bought for a song at a discounter many moons ago. It's been on the market since 1996 and I keep expecting it to get discontinued, but it's still on the Caron website. It's gone through several bottle designs, and is currently in the rather staid flacon shown below left. I prefer my pebble bottle, below right.

Reminder: next week (16 October) we'll do Powder Puff Friday: wear something powdery!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Aimez Moi is a yummy perfume.
Today I am wearing Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady. It is a very interesting but rather challenging scent. Rose, patchouli, resins… Dark and mysterious. It makes me think of church candles and dark red velvet.

Krazy Krizia! Old school heavy duty amber and patchouli which divides people into love and hate on first sniff. Some people tell me it’s oppressive and others tell me it’s fascinating but it certainly is unique and as it’s long discontinued I imagine not too many people loved it.

Love Krazy! It’s what I had planned to wear today but the weather was unexpectedly hot, and I wasnt brave enough to experiment with Krazy. OTOH I discovered Aimez Moi is fabulous in the heat.

Snap! Im also in Aimez Moi, in the same peppercorn bottle and very cheap from a discounter several years ago. Except, it was a blind-buy and I liked it but there was something about it that was odd, so it wasnt love, and I didnt wear it. So it’s been sitting there begging me to ‘Love Me’ for years.
But, today is Ropion day and though i have about 15 to choose from I spritzed this absentmindedly- and suddenly love it! I can see that it was only because I was so new to different scents before that I didnt get it. It’s like getting a new, wonderful perfume! :)

Yes! That’s exactly it! It’s happened a few times over the years. I find it really intriguing that there’s this palpable shift in perception and understanding, and it’s like this very closed door just magically opens. My shift from passionate tuberose loathing to absolute love was the biggest surprise, but I enjoy all of these little revelations along the way :)

I really liked Aimez-Moi, bought one of the tasseled-cushion-looking 1-oz bottles from a discounter, but found I wasn’t really wearing it often and passed it on. Sometimes I miss it, though. It is really, really nice – and I’m surprised too that it hasn’t been discontinued yet.

Portrait of A Lady: a tribute to the master of sillage.

It also happens to be the only Dominique Ropion’s fragrance I have recently come to own, following the suggestions of the NST community — Thank you!

Now I am considering the suggestions on vetiver fragrances! Off to sniff Vetiver Extraordinaire, Encre Noire, Guerlain Vetiver, and Sycomore again for the final hunt.

Sadly I don’t have even a sample of any Ropion perfumes. If I had s magic sample granting genie I’d ask for a spritz of Portrait of a Lady, like Glannys.

Instead today I’ll wear Mistouko EdP (newish) and revel in it!

The only Ropion I have access to is Alien, so I put on a spritz this morning. When I first smelled it on its launch, I thought, “That is GREAT. But I probably can’t wear it, can I?” The answer turned out to be and still is “No, I really can’t (great though it is).” I showered it off and put on Yves Rocher Cocoon for work. That, I CAN wear.

The original Alien is a powerhouse. When I got my Alien Essence Absolue, it came with a gift of Alien shower gel. I can’t even use that in the hot steam – the residue it leaves on the skin is a fragrance in it’s own right! But I do enjoy the derivative Alien EA very much.

I like it strong, but in deference to my coworkers sensibilities (although they’ve never commented on it, so maybe I can pull it off?) I spray it once into the air and walk through it before I put clothes on. It’s still very Alien, but with the volume turned down a smidge.

Me three! Cassie seems very golden to me today. It is big, and dressier feeling than my current still hot weather outfit, but it elevates the whole. (I will keep telling myself that.)

Thanks be that my sprayer worked today!!! It had malfunctioned, and I was so upset, I tried everything to fix it, to no avail. Today I pulled it out for the challenge, and was delighted to find it mysteriously fully functional. Yea!!! I may wear it for days in celebration. Be well :)

    Givenchy Amarige (of course!)

I was so paranoid about big sillage that I only sprayed once on my torso region. I think I was too worried because I can barely smell it.

I chose the 2009 Harvest Edition Mimosa version of Amarige which is gorgeous.

SOTD is RL Safari which is perfect. I always think of it as No 19 with a dollop of sweet cream on top. My older sister wore this years ago when it came out and I have to give her props for wearing something so interesting in the green family when I was still stuck on orientals.

Aimez Moi is my favorite in that moody violet oriental category. I like it better than L’Heure Bleue, Apres L’Ondee, and Bvlgari Black, which all smell like cousins to my nose. Aimez Moi doesn’t get too sweet and has what smells to me like a very nice black tea accord in the middle to give it some personality. I used to have one of these very pretty little 1 oz squatty cut glass bottles with a blue cap. I swapped it off b/c I hardly ever wore it, but it is my favorite Caron after Parfum Sacre.

More proof that we’re… well, not scent twins. Scent Cousins, maybe, since I still have so much difficulty with orientals! Aimez-Moi is my favorite Caron after Parfum Sacre, and I swapped off my 1-oz bottle of AM, and I do love Safari loads and loads. Though it’s like sweet drying hay to me instead of cream. :)

Me too! I love Safari, and it’s perfect in this balmy, post-spring, pre-summer season of inbetween. I wore Elephant yesterday, with some misgivings because it turned suddenly to summer for the day, but I sprayed it only twice, low and lightly, and all day caught soft wafts of spice and sweetness. Gorgeous! But much though I love the Elephant, I’m not sure I don’t love Safari more. I face a weekend of marking– it will be interesting to see if Safari stands the pace.

Mals – after all these years I certainly agree that we have very similar tastes. I think the only place I ever notice we differ is with patchouli. I don’t like strong patch, but I can take some….. Now, all I need is for you to test and review all the new interesting frags coming out, and I’ll be set!

I started out with Givenchy Very Irresistible. I’m not sure if my sample turned (it’s at least 4 years old) or if I just don’t like it (I remember liking one of the flankers slightly better anyway…in, like, 2011), but I’m not really enjoying this. Good thing I anticipated as much and brought a backup scent with me to work.

Well, clearly I’m going to have to try Aimez Moi – I LOVE the traditional Caron dark note that Robin mentions in her review.

I only have a sample of Jungle L’Elephant, nothing more by Ropion, so today I’m in Azemour. Still waiting for delivery of the Ivoire that I expected yesterday (and prepared so well for … did I jinx its arrival?), and figure that the Azemour will at least blend with the Ivoire if it shows up today. (Oh no – did I just jinx it again??) :)

The Ivoire finally arrived today, and while it doesn’t hold a candle to Azemour (or 19 or Cristalle or Jour d’Hermes or …), Ivoire is exactly what I’ve been hunting for and hoped it would be – a simple, very pretty woody floral. Sometimes one just needs a less complicated but still beautiful perfume to turn to.

I’m in my well-loved Jungle L’Elephant today. I missed it this summer so much I wore a tiny amount one day when it was in the mid-80s, with no ill effects. I don’t find it overpowering (and no one has told me otherwise), but that may be because I have a dabber mini instead of a spray.

Alas, I don’t have any scents by Ropion or nary a sample. I had Portrait of a Lady, kindly sent by an NSTer, but it’s long been drained.

Today is a very roll-out-of-bed sort of day (I so didn’t want to get out of bed this morning) so I grabbed a sample and showered in it: Byredo Rose of No Man’s Land. I really didn’t care much about my choice today.

I am wearing Krazy Krizia, which admittedly is a little much in the 90 degree autumn weather we are having in Texas. However, while I have a biggish bottle (1.7 oz) it is a splash bottle, not a spray, so I end up dabbing the juice on. This seems to help. Does anyone have the EDT of Krazy? I’ve seen it on ebay, but the information on Perfume Intelligence indicates that it was only available as an EDP. Does anyone know if there is a scent difference?

I only had two choices this morning, Aimez Moi or Euphoria, and as I’ll be going to a live and loud music gig later, I thought Euphoria would be more fitting, as Aimez Moi would be a tad too pretty. If I had any Carnal Flower left I would have gone with that one, but alas, my decant is drained, boohoo.
On a happy note, though, have just purchased a small bottle of Poopoo Pidoo, and some testers of their other fragrances. It’s a blind buy, but it’s only 10ml, and not too spendy. Have a good weekend everybody.

I apparently have no Ropion currently, so I stayed with my rotation and am in L’Air du Desert Morocain. It smelled wonderful outside in the chily early morning air, and it smells wonderful now in my stuffy little office. Definitely on my FB list! But as I read about Amez-Moi and POAL, my sample list is growing faster… Happy Friday, everyone!

My Ropion choices were Safari, CF and Une Fleur de Cassie. BUT I’ve a lunch today in a smallish restaurant, and opted for a judicious spray of Eau Premiere. May make up for my discretion later this afternoon with some lavishly applied CF, a la sayitisntso above (though I’m sadly lacking the shower gel & body butter).

This was an easy one for me, as I’m currently out of Carnal Flower (I gave my 5 ml bottle to a colleague…), so it’s Une Fleur de Cassie.

I have very fond memories of smelling it for the first time a few years ago. My then-colleagues had voted me the Employee of the Year and I got to go to a conference in Paris as a prize. And J knew that I wanted the Frederic Malle coffret as my birthday present, so he gave me the money. After the OECD conference on resource efficiency, I bought the coffret and went back to my very shabby hotel. It was late in the evening and as I had spent most of my money on perfume, I got myself a McDonald’s meal. So I was sitting there on my bed in the small, unpleasant room, with my chicken McNuggets and Malle coffret, giddy with excitement, going through the scents one by one. I expected Une Fleur de Cassie to be difficult for me, but it was instant love.

I think it’s a very intelligent scent and the fact that I genuinely like it kind of makes me feel intelligent, too.

I found that I have no Ropions in my cabinet, but do have a sample of Cologne Indélébile so I’m giving that a try this morning.
I can’t say that it is successful for me though…the classic cologne is clear, but I’m getting a strong blast of “plastic shower curtain” in here too which is not really working for me. Odd.

Is your sample in a plastic atomizer? I ask because I was put off by a plastic shower curtain smell from my first sample of VC&A California Reverie and it happened to be in a plastic container that make up counters use for liquid foundation samples. Ihave not smelled that note in subsequent samples in glass atomizers.

This one is in a glass sample vial, but it does have the plastic cap and wand. Maybe that is enough to transfer the plastic smell? Who knows…maybe enough to reserve judgement.

I’m in Euphoria… sort of. I’m heading out to the gym, and don’t want to overpower anyone with my perfume. So I did the two fist punch application method: I spray two spritzes in the air and immediately punch the scent cloud with my fists… Gives the illusion that I’ve generously applied the perfume and the room smells nice… but five minutes later the scent is just very faint on my wrists… now, off to the… oh phooey, where was I going? I only have one fragrance of Mr. Ropion and it is Carnal Flower. Not sure if it’s a Carnal Flower kind of day. I am currently fragrance free although I can still smell Beige on my t-shirt from yesterday, it’s just as lovely on fabric as it is on skin. It’s looking like another warm early fall day so I just might stick with the light white and yellow flowers and honey of Beige.

I don’t have any bottles from Ropion, but I took this opportunity to finally try my sample of Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant.
I tried only a little bit, well-warned that it could be a knockout, but in small quantity it seems lovely, raisin-y and spicy.

**Yesterday’s sample made me think of a new poll topic: dupes. I was trying our Noir Epices, because it had mentioned a bit around here, and though the last time I sampled it I got a little of the spice, this time it was all aldehydes, so much so that I could swear I was trying out my mom’s White Linen as a kid in the late 80s…other weird duplicate experiences?

Seriously! I guess I didn’t have a great sense of what he’d created, and clearly some are, as Robin mentioned previously, masterpieces, but evidently he’s something of a polarizing figure! I suppose that’s a good thing–at this point would certainly rather have more perfumes with a robust, focused aesthetic, even if it doesn’t match my own, than more perfume constructed around lowest common denominator… Not to say there shouldn’t be any fragrances with mass appeal, but just there are zillions now, and comparatively few of the other thing.

I sometimes think of this as heavenly pillow for the beliotrope! Scent twins with you today! I don’t get as much heliotrope as you, but a lot of almond and a remarkable similarity to SL Rahat Loukhoum, which I prefer to this (and have a bell jar). I also don’t get any similarity to Bvlgari Blv Notte, which was mentioned in Robin’s review of the WWDinP from a few years ago. I have and love the Notte with its delicious trail of vodka, ginger, and cacao and don’t smell any of this here. I love gourmands but the WWDinP is just okay; nonetheless, I’m glad I finally tried it. I’ll probably use up the sample by day’s end, so that will be an accomplishment!

I’m wearing some dabs of Carnal Flower body butter (from a sample). I adore Carnal Flower, but wearing it is another matter. After a few hours, it can become very cloying on me, so minute doses is the way to go for me. Part of me would love to have a bottle of Carnal Flower just for it’s beauty, but realistically it’s not something I would wear all that often. The body butter actually works very well as a perfume solid, and I’m really loving it today. (We’ll see how I feel in a few hours, though.)

While I have a few decants and many samples of perfumes by Ropion, I don’t think I have a single bottle of perfume by him.

Yes, I have. It’s gorgeous and maybe less sweet than the EdT, and I always make a friend spray it on her hair when we go to Barney’s SF so I can smell it on her (she has straight silky hair). I thought about going for that one, but if you regret spraying something on your hair, it’s going to be super hard to get out. Or perhaps you mean spraying the hair perfume on your skin?

Amarige was the first grown-up perfume I bought in the early 90s. I fell in love with the scent strip in Vanity Fair and rushed out to buy a bottle.

An antiques shop near me has an old nearly-empty 3ml Amarige mini for sale. The juice is dark brown but boy is it still fully intact and STRONG. Whenever I think I should buy that tester for old times’ sake the monstrous sillage of a single tiny drop puts me off the idea.

I have PoaL but I’m past the initial mad infatuation phase. I like sampling Ysatis whenever our paths cross but don’t own it

. . . so I wore no5 EDC for work and started the evening with Shalimar EDP.

I tend to prefer Amour; the sharper Tigre might work well on a guy.

And I’ve just discovered I have a third! Alien Eau Luminescente, the orange bottle that came out in 2008. I didn’t read the lIst carefully enough. I think this is the one that appeals this morning.

I’ve realised that I haven’t smelled the original since it first came out. It didn’t appeal then, but that was long before I got seriously addicted to perfume – I need to rectify that! I’ll be passing a department store this afternoon, will see what I think now.

Eau Luminescente is very orange to my nose. Fragrantica says mandarin, but my nose isn’t that nuanced.

Hi lillyjo, should you ever see this late contribution, I’m now wearing a spray of the original Alien. Very different perfumes to my nose, but at the same time very similar. They have the same structure, but one is a bright orange/mandarin, the other is a sweetish floral. I like the orange a lot, but the original still doesn’t appeal to me.

Wow – I feel so unique! This entire week I’ve been alternating between the 3 Ropions I currently have and love – Alien, L’Elephant, and the Beat.

Today I wore the Beat – I find it is a very pleasant bergamot-iris blend that is entirely workplace appropriate. It’s brightened by the pepper and tea, and the trace amount of sweetness seems to come from the floral rather than the fruit aspect. Best of all is the floral woodsy dry down.

    Complicated? No. Likeable? Very.
