Wednesday scent of the day 9/23

Posted by Robin on 23 September 2015 185 Comments

vet-bask-s

It's hump day already! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Hermès Vetiver Tonka, because annawilde reminded me of it yesterday.

Reminder: this Friday will be 3 Hour Tour Friday: you're going on a short afternoon cruise but who knows, you just MIGHT get stranded on a desert island. You can take up to 3 perfumes from one brand OR one perfumer. Choose your 3, wear one of them. (From a suggestion by Nozknoz)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the hand-crafted vetiver basket is $50 at PrettySly: "Craftsmen in Madagascar, use traditional techniques to hand weave, these aromatic Decorative Vetiver Baskets, from natural vetiver grass. Accent a shelf or display as an eclectic centerpiece. What is so amazing about these baskets is that if you spray them with water, they respond right away with a most agreeable perfume/smell/-vetiver."

I think it is disco’d, Robin. It’s nowhere to be found in stores here in France. I only see the women’s Iris and I gladly picked that up over the summer….heck, my nose could baaaarely discern the difference anywho. Yes, anywho.

Well, hopefully one of the new series (that I haven’t smelled it) sort of replaces it.

And I thought the men’s was soapier / cleaner, but you’re right they weren’t radically different.

It is one of my partner’s go-to scents, but I’m not all that fond of wearing it myself. I have a backup bottle, which will last a long, long time.

Got my yearly decant of Borneo yesterday and my love for it made me spritz a bit more on today. Mr. Lutens has had a hand in lots of masterpieces but this one might just be my favorite.

Like that one a lot, too. You smell delish! I’m also enjoying Reminiscence Patchouli which is similar veined but earthier, a bit powdery, and much cheaper (although it doesn’t smell cheap).

I love the theory of the yearly decant. To think, buying just what you’ll use, and not buying more ’til you’ve finished with it!

Or maybe we shouldn’t: might put the (niche) perfume industry out of business if we all suddenly became so sensible :)

I like the yearly decant idea too, especially if you like a lot of variety.

Another vote for this idea! Love it. Bypasses the problem of bottles going off, and if tastes change, no biggie. So utterly simple and manageable.

Beautifully put–now I’m wishing for that simplicity in my own collection! If I could go back and start over, I’d make a rule of no bottles for the first two years, decants only, while I identify the VERY few fragrances I wear enough to need more than a decant a year… I think it’s truly only two bottles!

(Of course I could still implement that rule, get rid of everything but Dzing and En Passant– but now early bottles have sentimental value…)

        • C.H. says:
          23 September 2015 at 1:42 pm

And decants are such a good education in what it means, in the perfume context, to like a lot of variety. I figured that as with my feelings on jeans/lipstick/handbags, I’d be inclined to use a lot of just one or two favorite perfumes, and thus bottles would be justified… but in practice, there are VERY few decants that I wear often enough to finish even in the span of a year!

I have the day off of work and I’m sitting in my underwear, debating what to choose. Still craving a bit of sweetness I think. Maybe a bit of Natori.

I’m preparing a care package full of samples for a girl I know who has had a recent spate of bad luck and needs some new things to cheer and distract her. Having a lot of fun with it.

Ah see you get the fun part without the housework! :-)

We keep missing each other, but I did a side-by-side to give you an idea of Calligraphy Rose. The closest in my collection is La Fille, so I compared (and I know you are familiar with LF)
I’d initially thought that CR was maybe a brighter, sweeter hot pink to LF’s dark burgundy rose, but surprisingly CR was actually a bit fresher and lighter. Still the pinker version, but a lighter, slightly less sweet version. I think if you like LF then you’ll like CR, but I also think they have many similarities so I doubt one will need a bottle of each (says she who impulsively purchases loves and has a bottle of each… ho hum… ;-) )

Agree that there is some similarity! However…I adore CR and am not all that fond of LF. I often adore particular scents without liking others which are similar. Go figure!

And I’m sorry to keep missing you too. Life has been (happily) busier lately but it does mean my posting here becomes less consistent. Thank you SO much for taking the time to tell me all about CR!

I was craving La Fille de Berlin, but my sample is completely empty, and I am (was?) waiting for an “special” occasion to buy a bottle. Instead I put some Jo Malone Red Roses, with a touch of Rose Ikebana to add some fruityness. It’s nice, but it doesn’t quite compete with the jammy goodness of the Lutens’.

Marinated? So you wore it last night and then did another basting this morning ;)

That’s a perfume I’d like to try, but since it’s discontinued I don’t think I’ll get the chance. I was thinking it was time to break out the ambers in my collection soon as well. Nice fall weather is finally here :)

Exactly! I wore it last night at home – sprayed on self, sprayed a bit on sheets and my pajamas. I showered this morning but then sprayed it on again post-shower because I just can’t get enough!

I’m not sure if it’s technically discontinued. I found it on Dior’s main website recently (a few weeks ago). It seems to come and go from their site. So it’s possible to get it still.

Had to put on my No Nonsense – All Chic perfume today because our office is hosting a local Co-op for one of our franchise clients. So I put on Cuir de Russie.

Generally, I’m an office manager, but if I’m honest – today I feel like a hotel host. *sigh*

At least it’ll be a short week for me. Tomorrow the office will be dead since people have the option of working from home. We are close to Philadelphia where Popecalypse is happening this weekend (Pope Francis is visiting). Highways and roads are being closed, cars already being towed away from the Pope Zone in the city. It’s kinda funny how so many are coming to the city to see the pope, whereas all the locals are screaming: ABANDON SHIP! So tomorrow should be easy in the office with half the people gone and Friday I’m taking off for my birthday :p.

Yeah, my mom is in Philly right now visiting a friend, who lives right off the parkway. My mom said it’s “ground zero” there and they are putting up a fence around the whole building for when they do person checks! So far they’ve been hit or miss with actually towing cars that aren’t supposed to be parked in that red zone area, but she’s got hers in the parking garage luckily. She and her friend are fleeing the city today to come stay with me :)

I agree it is best to stay as far away as possible. I used to live in the Fairmount area and even annual events like Independence Day was bad enough. We could never do anything because we were “trapped” in the area. So glad I’m out of there now!

And thanks for the birthday wishes :)

Ah, the Popecalypse. I work in Center City Philly, right in the middle of it all- every time I walk outside my office, there are more fences and blockades up. I live north of the city, but decide to play it safe and take off to visit my family in CT starting tomorrow. It’ll be a 5-day weekend for me, since my office is closed until Tuesday.
      Also, happy birthday, Jenkr!

Woot! Lucky you to get so much time off! Enjoy your visit to CT. I’m no longer in the city (thank goodness), but we have several people who commute, so we’ve got WFH days set up.

Thanks for the bday wishes :)

Today I’m wearing BPAL perfume oil Bathsheba, described as carnation, plum and Arabian musk. What I’m getting is a lot of spicy goodness, possibly from the carnation. This will be a great scent for fall and winter. I think it is full bottle worthy, and since BPAL sells their 5ml bottles for $17.50, you can’t really go wrong.

Wearing Eau Sauvage Parfum today, easing into cooler weather. This one is very different from the edt, said to be mostly myrrh, and doesn’t seem to get a lot of love (standing in the shadow of its citrusy sibling). Honestly, I get a Chapstick accord that for some reason I love. Sweet & warm, but not heavy.

I do carry it in my bag, occasionally:) Because I think the first hours smell better.

Anyway, my point was mostly that people should not give up without trying, it might last on them. I don’t have a particularly magnetic skin, there are plenty of perfumes that disappear quickly on me.

I’m finding it sweet and woody and not a hell of a lot of incense. Now that it’s settled a bit I really like it, at first I thought it would be too woody for me to wear. My husband says it smells like imbuya wood, if that helps.

I’m terrible at reviews. My nose or my descriptive powers seem to be slightly abnormal and I get “sweet” from things most people don’t.
Now that I’ve re-applied more heavily and am paying attention there is an incense note I missed the first time, though I still get a lovely, rich wood most prominently. I had to look up imbuya too, since I’m not a hardwood geek, I know it as Brazilian Walnut so now I get the association.
Nanban will be getting some serious testing here. At first sniff, I thought it was going to be too much like a mainstream masculine and was going to pawn it off on the husband who wears them well, but on skin it’s really smooth and lovely. I enjoyed getting whiffs of it at the gym and retract my statement about it being unwearable in the heat (with careful spraying). It doesn’t develop that nagging chemical-whateverness that I struggle with in this type of perfume.

Running through some Diptyque samples in order to make a request of a perfume mule! Neither of the ones I’ve got on now are winners tho: straight-up scrubbed Eau Plurielle (if Eau Rose were redone to introduce a metallic, industrial quality to the lemon-rose combo, plus industrial-strength tenacity–could swear soap and water just made it stronger.) I’m enjoying Eau Tarocco, but I’m already a fan of the Crabtree & Evelynn’s Tarocco, and that goes for less than a third of the price.

Meanwhile I wore the jasmine Essences Insensees last night. It’s pretty good, impressively indolic for a Diptyque or really any widely available new release, so I’d think jasmine fans might like to try it. That said, I still find Lush Lust, in the solid form, a more winsome jasmine…and to continue the comparison shopping, the latter is less than a tenth the price of the former! So it’s been a happy round of testing for my wallet, if less so for my nose.

Yes! Especially after wearing the Diptyque all day, and a disappointing dose of flat laundry musk in the drydown,* my preference is pretty definitely for the C&E! What version do you have right now? Trying to decide if I should try the body mist or just reup on body products, since the EDT doesn’t seem to be available…

*Want to emphasize that I am not ordinarily a white musk hater! Plenty of my fragrances I really like have it; it’s just this particular version that I found rather a let-down. Hilariously, I see Kevin’s with me re: this one! https://nstperfume.com/2009/06/10/diptyque-leau-de-tarocco-fragrance-review/

Morning, all. I’m wearing a white shirt, red lipstick and the ever-energising Cristalle, because I’m doing a bit of a droop at the moment. Fresh, crisp and definitive are my NOTD (needs of the day), and since my inner Waterdragon is sadly not supplying these qualities, I’m applying them externally. I think I’ll add red boots to the far end and stride off into the drizzle misleadingly looking and smelling as though I know what I’m about. Cristalle is good for that. It’s just gorgeous, isn’t it?

My red boots are (shamefacedly admitting this) two pairs, actually…one slightly more tomato-y than the other, both very state-your-business, but one in a rather more refined (Yes, mum, I was listening!) way than the other. I remember hearing that JCE doesn’t wear fragrance (I think it was he). Maybe the projects are taking away the “need” to carry fragrance with you? If you completely lost all interest in perfume(ry), then I’d be worried.

Apparently Mrs M was also channeling JCE. ;) (see below)

Occasionally I read NST exchanges out loud to my utterly delightful and wonderful spouse, when they are funny or sweet or (like this one) both.

I guess she hadn’t noticed the trend because she said, “What?! You haven’t been wearing perfume? What’s wrong with you?”

I chuckled and went back to my Internet play.

Next thing I know she’s shouting, “Incoming!” and wielding a hefty glass spray bottle.

Grapefruit abounds, and I’m asking, “Do you know what that is?”

(Obviously the important thing is my wife’s perfume literacy.)

“Jour of the Day or something,” she says. “I was worried about you.”

Jour d’Hermès is indeed my scent of the day, now.

It’s all wrong, and I tried to wash it off and apply my sample of vintage Bandit, because that suddenly seems exactly right.

Jour won’t come off, and I can’t find that sample, but thanks to you all and Mrs Mountain, I think my perfume mojo is back!

Hahaha! Great story. I had to read this to my spouse as well. I knew he’d get a kick out of “Jour of the Day” especially since he calls that one “Jour d’Herpes”. Thanks for the laugh :-D

Is that herpes with the accent grave or the accent aigu?

But I want a FB of Sonoma Scent Studios Rose Musc, and a FB of Mohur Extrait first. And some more Spirituese Double Vanilla. But that’s it! Oh, maybe some Encens Mythique. And the LADDM makes five. These five FB I will buy before I buy anything else! Although I am going through my Iris Poudre at a rapid rate – that is definitely a replacer…oh, dear, is this what they mean when you fall down the rabbit hole? LOL.

SotD is Le Couvent des Minimes Eau des Minimes. Cheerful and zesty with no sharp edges or screetchy bits.

For those who celebrated yesterday’s Elephant Appreciation day, I just saw a mention of Maria Candide Gentile Elephant & Roses. A *big* fragrance, perhaps? :D

I went to Macys today to smell cinnabar. I commented that it didn’t smell the way I had remembered. The SA told me that none of the Lauder perfumes have changed and it must be that my chemistry had changed. I might have been able to talk myself into a bottle, but her condescending manner left me no other choice but to walk away.

You did the right thing. It is so exasperating when anyone assumes he/she knows it all; I.e., more than you or I!

    SOTD = Jacques Zolty Van-ile

From a generous decant via swap! This is a well-done grown-up vanilla. It has just the right amount of sweetness, sillage, longevity and is 100% office appropriate.
