Thursday scent of the day 9/17

Posted by Robin on 17 September 2015 162 Comments

water lily

Happy Constitution Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Annick Goutal Un Matin d’Orage.

Extra reminder: splitmeet coming up on Saturday!

Reminder: tomorrow will be H2O Friday: wear a fragrance with a marine / aquatic / water note, or wear a fragrance that reminds you of the sea (or some other body of water) in some other way.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I NEVER thought I’d like it..
I love shalimar, especially ode de la vanille madagascar.
        I really hate sweet/gourmands..
But I found a sample a few weeks ago.
Just bought my second bottle, my husbands loves it so much, He had surgery last week and we had a really horrible time.
he’s recovering very well and this scent gave me a lot of comfort. Give it a try, you might surprised like me!

Continuing my attempt to bridge summer and fall with Bond No. 9’s Washington Square. I like it. It’s a bit linear, but nicely woody. Probably won’t last the day though, so I’ll try to spruce it up with Eau d’Orange Verte.

    I’m wearing Agent Provocateur.

I don’t have anything, even a sample I don’t think, with a marine note; but if I had some of the original Acqua di Gio for women, I’d wear it tomorrow. I like it!

That’s impressive. Do you dislike marine notes that much or do you prefer other styles than that so much that marine note perfumes never came your way?

I’m not particularly fond of them, but I do have Reflection Woman by Amouage I’ll most likely wear tomorrow.

Marine notes just remind me DEEPLY of the 90s, when I wore both CK One and L’Eau d’Issey. Guess I overdosed and I generally do not find them appealing anymore.

Wearing Sarrasins for two days in a row because I am debating if I should just bite the bullet and get that three quarter full of Sarrasins on E-bay. I can’t believe that my birthday was two days ago and still haven’t got my perfume gift for myself.

I’m wearing Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot, and eating a piece of banana bread for breakfast.

I had a few bananas that were starting to turn, and my daughter asked if I could bake some banana bread yesterday evening. Its been a long time since I’ve made it.

    Delicious indulgence!

If you slice before freezing, they can double as smoothie ingredients, as long as you’ve got something strongly colored to add to the smoothie, such as blueberries.

        • odonata9 says:

I am VERY picky about the level of ripeness of bananas for eating, so we end up doing this a lot. Also great for making smoothies – don’t need ice or as much sweetener as they are very ripe. Pro-tip – peel them and put them in a ziploc as they are a pain to peel frozen or thawed (mushy).

    Dries van Noten.

Creamy sandalwood suggests the cozy warmth. Powdery vanilla, sweet tonka bean, and faint spiciness of saffron capture the gourmand treats.
For this bleak and gloomy weather here, I seek shelter in a Baroque-styled café with its plush, velvety crimson interior and pervading aroma of freshly baked pastries, confectionery, and biscuits lightly spiced with cinnamon or cloves. All of this wrap around you in the coziest of comfort. Yum!

When I go to Zurich I will wear Dries van Noten, at least the perfume if not his amazing clothing, AND I will visit Michel Péclard and ask for a large slice of tarte au citron with two forks…

Now I will go back to unpacking groceries…

          Ahhh… the sweet life…

Sometimes I get so frustrated trying to decide what scent I’m in the mood for. I started out today looking at my box full of minis, trying to decide between Gucci Guilty and Prada. Since neither were quite right, I thought about Cabaret, which lead me on to some other roses. I finally decided to try an untouched decant of AA Rosa Magnifica, which is a quite linear rose scent. I’m trying to decide on tomorrow’s fragrance – whether to go old school with the most classic of aquatic scents, Cool Water Woman, or to go with Iroaz. Frustrating.

If you usually spray but the mini comes in splash, do you end up just dabbing or do you transfer to an atomizer first and then apply?

No, I still dab. I’m a bit too lazy to transfer all those dabber vials and minis into spray bottles – but it would be nice if they were all in spray!

That’s one reason why I decided to dump the tons of nice samples I had a few years ago. It’s hard enough to pick without the struggle to test as well. Sometimes I have a hard time choosing too, but on a day like that I just go with one of my standard go to frags or I’ll wait until about lunchtime to apply – sometimes a mood will come to me later.

yes, sometimes I get annoyed at so many samples to choose from, too many, and just put a bunch of them in swap bundles. Simplify my life. Then I start getting another list of interesting scents to sample, and then STC or somewhere has a sale, and I end up with another batch. I still have that set of Memo samples you sent me. I like Kedu, and Granada the best of what I have tried, but I haven’t gotten through all of them…

So, I was a little bad and got a bottle of Marni Rose even though I have a bottle of Marni Spice en route (although yay, first good TJ Maxx find!). I like the original much better and even though this one’s pretty, there’s a note (maybe the mint?) that I don’t really like. The drydown’s good, though, so we’ll see if this grows on me or if it ends up in the next swap meet.

My SOTD is “Deseo” by Jennifer Lopez. This is probably the only fragrance from her line that I liked. It brings back good memories. I might eventually have to go in search of a FB. :)

Scent twins! I have a little mini of this in the office, and my early morning scent (Chanel No. 5 EDT, applied at around 5 am) has mostly worn off, so I switched to 24 Faoubourg. Definitely elegant, and usually has pretty good staying power especially compared to the No. 5 which never lasts long on me.

It rained last night (Hallelujah!) so the world is grey and damp… which for a northern Californian looking at her newly planted garden (ripped out the lawn three months ago, but it has taken a while to move the project forward) is just a lovely sight. And of course, our hearts are in our mouths about the zillion wildfires that are being fought up and down the state….let it rain!

I’m in Caron’s Pour un Homme, which feels right for the wet lavender and rosemary sense (and scent) of the day.

It was really hard to find Caron here, but I have managed to discover it in the cupboard of the perfumery.

Along with Fougère Royale, Jicky, and Mouchoir de Monsieur, I get this feeling that lavender note — in perfumes, and not L’Occitane’s handcream — is characteristic of another era — when civet, lavender, and carnation were as common as we now have oud everywhere :)

Have you tried the Caron Pour Un Homme Millesime? I have been told that it is simply the EdP concentration. When I compared them side by side, the latter seemed to be bolder and its lavender has lost some sweetness. It is likely that Caron is trying to increase the longevity in order to compete with the heavily fragrant atmosphere we now live in. Still, I very much like the ingenuity of Caron Pour Un Homme: simple, sweet, powdery lavender and vanilla.

No I haven’t. I will keep my eye out for it.

If I had it my way with Pour un Homme, I would like the salty lavender, herbs and vanilla amped up, and the powder dialed down… in a perfect world. I wonder how it smelled in the 1930s?

So nice to have some rain, isn’t it? We took out our back lawn a couple of years ago and put in plantings and some rock paths instead, and it just gets better each year as the shrubs mature. I’m glad your garden is surviving this ridiculous summer – ours is pretty hardy now, but it had its first-month trial by ice instead of fire – within a month of being finished, the temperature dropped into single digits for about a week. I was certain we would lose half of the baby plants, but most everything made it through.

I will be in the NY/ NJ area on 9/27, staying in a hotel in Jersey City so I can watch the full lunar eclipse, preferably over the Manhattan skyline but I’d love to go sniffing or do another live swap earlier in the day

I had an equally horrible day yesterday and the day before, similarly instigated. Larkin says it well. I can also recommend Jules Feiffer for the mood. Cannot think of any specific quote, but he has nailed my family’s bad behavior since I was a pre-teen (and that was a loooong time ago) reading the cartoon pages in the SF Chronicle.

The SA gave me a big sample and by the time I returned from a trip I headed straight to Bloomies counter for a FB, like an addict needed a fix. I think it was a birthday gift from me to me. I also love Tabacco Oud. I cannot go and test anymore right now as they are so costly!

SOTM is Flowerbomb for its fluffy vanilla and tobacco coziness. Hubby and I have been on a road trip vacation this week – were in northern California yesterday to visit the redwoods (Stout Grove – gorgeous and amazing!), and were going to head home to Portland slowly starting Friday. But we simultaneously came down with severe homesickness and decided to make a beeline for home yesterday. Way too many hours in a car, but we’re appreciating the amenities in our own house this morning!

Hello, all. You smell just wonderful in your rich, expansive, autumn-oriented glories, and by contrast, my SOTD seems rather small and narrow: Ninfeo Mio. This is my scent for the Friday project, after twenty minutes (really!) of hopeless dithering. It’s a cool smell and brings to mind a water feature in a tranquil garden, which I believe is what it set out to do, so it’s most unfair of me to want movement and wildness. Bottom line: it’s perfectly lovely, and I’m being contrary.

Ninfeo Mio is so lovely! I actually think it works in the cool weather too – there is something about that boxwood accord that is very cheering and green when the weather is dreary. You could tie a red ribbon around it and make it into a holiday wreath, lol!! I also think of damp mosses and dripping rock walls when I wear it. It is very atmospheric.

Yes, my problems today are in my head, not in the perfume bottle. You’re quite right: it’s green and refreshing and calming, and many other good things. I need to re-calibrate my attitude to the poor little Ninfeo, which is doing its level best to do a good job for me.

Oh, and leathermountain, I know what I wanted to say to you: the gentle push you gave me that ended up with my stepping down from the “Head of” role turned out to be a double blessing, so I owe you not one, but two drinks when I someday get to NYC. One of my staff found herself unable to continue with her teaching this year, and I’m now able to fill the gap her departure created from this week until the end of semester. I would have stepped in anyway, but I think I wouldn’t have managed anything properly if I had been still been grimly hanging persevering with the “Head of” thing. So, double thanks: you probably made a casual comment, but it fell on fertile soil for me

SOTD for Throwback Thursday is Karl Lagerfeld Sun Moon Stars. I found its lovely midnight blue glass bottle not long ago in my collection and since I haven’t worn it for a long time decided to revisit it today. I think the trick to enjoying the powerhouse scents of the 80’s and 90’s is to spritz lightly (and far away from one’s head/nose!).

Despite its overwhelming array of notes – (from fragrantica) top: freesia, bergamot, pineapple, orange blossom, lotus, rice and juicy peach.; heart: heliotrope, intensive jasmine, orange blossom, daffodil, carnation, lily of the valley, seductive orchid and iris; base: sandalwood, cedar, amber, musk, and vanilla – a light application on me is mostly a soft orange blossom/powdery heliotrope/woody sandalwood and is very enjoyable today.

But I just found it by going to the FragranceNet.com, and it came up on the homepage, so hoping that will work for you too!

We do need you in one piece to enjoy that Beloved bottle properly, so I supposed prioritizing the brakes investment is the proper horse/cart order of operations! :)

I remember when you scored that bottle – it’s a big deal to get a good price on an Amouage!! Affable is the perfect description. It is so much at place in my collection with my greens and chypres, but is really different too. Classy without being too uptight – elegant but casual – complex without overwhelming. It’s those subtle dualities that keep me interested. All its parts are just lovely. I only have a few other fragrances that I consider so perfect from top to bottom. I put my dabs on this morning, and I can still smell it 12 hours later!

I used to love aquatics and wore Escape, L’Eau D’Issey, Acqua di Gio, New West, Escada Ocean Blue, Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds & Sapphires, CK One, etc. For tomorrow, I’ll probably just wear Eau de Merveilles. I do also have a mini of Missoni Acqua, which I feel like is a very close dupe of Byblos, another 90s aquatic.

One of the kittens is loosing baby teeth and has two lower fangs sticking straight out and catching on her tongue and lips. They aren’t loose enough for me to yank without hurting her but they are driving her nuts. It’s actually really cute but I feel bad for her.

I cannot wait for the puppy to start losing those baby teeth. Those things hurt like hell and she’s at that playful nippy stage. She’s gentle when she takes treats from me but my hubby hasn’t figured out how to teach her that with him and she’s tried taking his finger along with the treat. I find it funny. Eventually they both will learn.

Now I have two entertaining suffering kittens. Doolittle grabbed a bumblebee when we went out for leash training so she has a HUGE hand. Still, she doesn’t seem to feel too bad and is eating and drinking, just looks like she has an oven mitt on. Hope the swelling goes down soon, it must really throb!
