Thursday scent of the day 9/3

Posted by Robin on 3 September 2015 183 Comments

school bus

If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing the stunningly beautiful Wit by Parfums DelRae.

Reminder: tomorrow, 9/4, will be Back to School Friday...wear a perfume that says 'back to school' to you, or that says you mean business, or ....?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Guerlain Terracotta since I’ve hardly worn it this summer; I’ve been on a sampling jag and have mostly ignored what I already own. It’s good to wear something that I know I like and not have to think about

I had planned to wear Fleur de Chine, but I was so busy admiring my tiny Le Creuset pots in the morning (I’ve just bought them and made oven-baked eggs) that I completely forgot. So I’m wearing Fleur des Fleurs by Une Nuit a Bali, a nice, slightly tropical floral (I happened to have a sample in the office).

You bought the mini cocotte? I make my eggs in one of those all the time, love shirred eggs — if they have lots of butter and lots of cheese 🙂

Well. How to say this? The thing is, I bought six of them, in different colours…

I tried out different combinations: egg with smoked salmon, with cheese, with tomatoes and ramson butter. All were delicious.

Oh, no, they do, a set of three on a little tray…but, I was going to buy Perfume! with this paycheck, and now these tiny little red pots are calling my name. Evil Anniky! It’s all your fault!

I’m willing to take the blame, but I think they can fill a similar role to perfume: something lovely that you don’t necessarily need, but that makes life a bit nicer. And mornings easier to bear. Everyday luxury.

And yes, the colour selection is pretty great.

I’d never heard of shirred eggs, and now that I’ve looked it up, I have to try it. The mini cocotte is awfully cute, but I think the ramekins I already have will have to do for now.

The ramekins will do very nicely and it’s a great dish – a bit like omelette in the sense that you can use whatever ingredients you like and have endless variations, but baked/shirred eggs are much easier to get right. You just have to know how a clock works. Good luck!

You can absolutely make in any ramekin, the only advantage to the cocotte is the lid.

You can also use ramekins to make coddled eggs in a saucepan of water — I did that for a long time before I finally found one of those very old specialty revereware pans.

    SOTD: Knowing.
My comfort scent. The reason for wearing this is because I caught a whiff of my colleague’s oakmoss fragrance and it got me craving some. Funny thing is, he doesn’t wear any perfume but just some spray-on deodorant and it becomes this beautiful oakmoss scent on his skin.
    Talk about enviable skin chemistry…

Possibly enviable spray-on deodorant. I borrowed some over the weekend that are marketed as masculine, and they smelled impressively like full-on perfumes.

Possibly nicer perfumes than the womens deodourants! I use men’s deodourant as the womens are all fruity or aquatic or that watery chemical floral blahness.

I totally agree! I am trying Cashmere Mist deodorant today for the first time… (it is not a perfume I wear, but the deodorant gets a lot of love on the blogosphere)… it is okay, but I’d prefer me some good ol’ vetiver… usually considered a masculine ingredient in deodorant for some totally atavistic reason!

Scent twins? I ran out of my everyday deodorant the other day so I broke out the special occasion Cashmere Mist. I liked it better twenty some years ago when it was oval shaped and in a black container. I don’t know if it was reformulated when they changed packaging. (The perfume definitely has been.) But it seems the old stuff was softer, both physically and scent-wise.

Hey Lucy, I’m flappin’ my arms at ya.

So, the deodorant is okay, but what you are describing from 20 years ago sounds more like a product I’d like… luxurious, which this product is not.

This morning, I was going crazy trying to figure out what wonderful scent I was smelling and where it was coming from. I never figured it out–probably a combination of perfume on my clothes, pillow, and scented cards on my nightstand–but it put me in the mood for something sweet and spicy.

So I’m finally jumping the ready-for-fall bandwagon. Enjoying a pumpkin latte and slightly overdid it this morning with Arquiste for J. Crew 57. Too bad it’s supposed to be 90+ degrees today.

    I love Wit!

However, am sampling Jour d’Hermes Absolu, having not gotten along with something harsh in the original, and having heard that the Absolu version was easier to wear. So far no “ugh, must get this off me” as I had with the edp, but I’m not loving it either. It’s odd how very few JCE fragrances I actually like.

I didn’t like either of the Jour d’Hermes versions, either. Something about the sour top notes, which smelled a bit like (bad) grapefruit, just didn’t work for me. Which is strange considering how much I love Pamplelune in all its grapefruit glory.

So interesting to me which perfumers one does or doesn’t jibe with. I confess I think maybe I don’t “get” Christopher Brosius. The scents are beautiful but I haven’t really found one I think is *appealing*–they all smell like things I might like to smell on an inanimate object more than on my skin. Like very lovely room scents. Obviously many noses more sophisticated than mine disagree tho!

Because of my scent eating skin, I can safely wear two different scents on each arm and no one – including me sometimes – will notice. As they’re on two different arms and both fairly soft (on me anyway), they’re not combining. The CdR is from a spray so it projects a bit more, but the other is a dabber sample and I can only smell it when I push my nose to my wrist.

I did have someone standing next to me grab my left arm (the CdR one) and take a good sniff – apparently that one is doing well!

I started off trying to compare Dzonkha and Timbuktu, but shortly after I applied, I had one of those reactions where one’s lips and tongue start going numb…I react that way to some pesticides, roach and ant killers, etc. Argh, distressing. Suspect it was Timbuktu, but I have not been appreciating Dzonkha either, so both got scrubbed, and put in the pass along envelope – actually, the 2nd pass-along envelope, as I have been sampling, comparing and culling ferociously.

So then to sooth my nose and nerves, I probably oversprayed Seville a l’Aube, but my office mate is out of the office, so I am here in an lovely orange blossom haze…

Anyway, to extend my little tidying up frenzy here, if anyone is just aching for a random batch of samples, and can’t wait till the next Freebie Meet, email me and I will pass some along, as I would like more room in my perfume drawer… use my username at gee mayl..

I had a few glib responses…but they all were disses…but truthfully? I love ketchup. So it is complicated… a scent or scented product that is almost universally liked (like ketchup which is considered indispensable even by people who cannot stand tomatoes) but is also very accessible, cheap, and lowbrow. Sigh. Nope. Nothing matches ketchup.

I started today with Tom Ford’s new Venetian Bergamot, which I like, but could tell it would not last past 10am for me so I added a few sprays of PdN L`Eau à la Folie.

Funny how we were chatting the other day about not smelling scent on people as I was just over at the desk of a colleague and she smelled really good. I asked her what she was wearing and she said the Burberry Woman, the original. I looked it up and its a fruity floral, but it didn’t smell like that on her at all. Amazing what chemistry will do to a scent..

Oh my! It must be an indication that i have waaay too many- like Old Mother Hubbard of perfume- because I actually forgot I owned this until you mentioned it.
Im surprised that its listed as a fruity floral because that’s not what I get at all. It certainly isnt pink and sweet or any of the things that ‘fruity floral’ conjures up. It’s quite a nice scent and I used to get lots of comments on it too.

SOTD was a blind grab out of a bag full of minis, which luckily for me ended up being Vrai Blonde. I am continuing to avoid the summer citruses, trying to prepare for for fall. This is my only ELDO, and happily enough, I really like it.

Have you tried Precious Woods from April Aromatics? It’s a nice rough cedar bomb, although it’s missing that greasy mineral graphite note. I know graphite is soluble in oil, so that could make for some interesting layering experiments. I have no knowledge of how safe it would be but my guess is pretty safe. Pencils ought to be designed for all methods of human consumption, judging by the habits of very young writers and some of the extra stressed out older ones.

Hey, Victoria at Bois de Jasmin did a fun piece on Belgian fashion designers– a museum exhibition–the other day. It was about Dries and others–most of whom I did not know. BUT, there were lots of very a la mode, avant garde, cutting-edge (you see where I am going) pants in the show that looked like yoga pants to me!

Sadly, I am neither avant garde nor cutting edge. What I am, is lazy. And a big lover of non-binding-in-the-waist pants. It’s my waist needs to be whittled, but I don’t anticipate that happening any time soon. 😉

Eau de Shalimar today. This was a blind-buy for me in the winter, and I found it dry, dusty, thin, and high-pitched, but as a light, lemony-vanilla cologne-type scent, it’s obviously more suited to warm-weather use. It’s still a bit dry and powdery, but pleasant- I just sometimes wonder if it’s too close to baby wipes and vanilla car freshener for my taste. However, I always find that the spray mechanism on this and other Shalimars is perfection…they dispense a fine, light, even mist and I love it! I wish all sprayers were like these…

I picked infusion d’iris absolue, workhorse pretty-but-distinct scent in my wardrobe! I found three of the new infusions and briefly sampled two: amande and oeuillet. The latter one has a nice spicy top note but once that faded I found it hard to smell anything but the Prada infusion base. The amande is quite sweet (it’s apparently unisex but I would never have guessed it) but has more character and longevity. I’ll have to sample again, more thoroughly, and try to find the cedre too!

I really like it if I’ve worn through two decants. My FB purchases fall into three categories: impulse buys, things I love for special occasions, and things I really find comfortable to wear. Korrigan is in the last category and the one I should always try to purchase from.

No SOTD yet, just in the door and looks like there is a package from Luckyscent w/ taurville incense flash inside along with a sample of I Miss Violet and Ambrette 114 since so many have commented recently on its coziness for fall. I have never worn fragrance to bed, I usually spray my sheets with lavender, but I keep reading that many contributors do apply fragrance at night … So my SOTN will be incense flash after I tear the box open!

Hi from Amtrak where I’m sadly realizing I really did not packing any back-to-school perfume! Ah well, I’ll be looking forward to hearing everyone’s favorite pencil shavings scent 🙂

Meanwhile scent of the train trip is just a lavender hand sanitizer from Whole Foods, to which I have something of a devotion. It’s a little silly as I’m sure I could find hand sanitizer at a better price–or a nicer lavender–but the combo of clean hands plus a little aromatherapy goes a long way to making travel more tolerable!

Plus they usually have a box of them at checkout, so, path of least resistance ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wait. Which one do you have? I get Dr. Bronner’s organic hand sanitizer in lavender at Whole Foods and carry the spray in my purse. It is a “salty” lavender, very close to a room spray my mom used when I was a kid.

Oh, maybe I should give that one a shot! I’ve got the EO-branded ones–the scent won’t change anyone’s life (least of all lavender devotees, I should think), but it doesn’t smell as industrial as I feared, either. Just sort of soft, very l And the scent doesn’t linger TOO long, which is what I’m looking for from a hand sanitizer–nice to have a couple sniffs but then I don’t particularly want it to become my SOTD.

Congratulations on your wonderful bottle! What I do is wiggle the stopper until I can pull it free of the membrane covering the top of the bottle. Sometimes I have to cut the string but other times there is enough room to get the stopper out without cutting. I like how the string looks so I try and leave it, but if I have to cut it, too bad. I want the perfume more than the string!

I don’t mind cutting a little, just enough to free the stopper so I can dab away without fearing losing any precious drops. I also wouldn’t want to ruin the beautiful black seal.

I tend to be clumsy with opening things and it was much easier to cut. Unless you’re using it on a very regular basis, I suggest wrapping the neck and top with Parafilm to reduce/avoid evaporation. Parafilm is available from ebay. I can also give you some when I finally meet you one of these days!

I’m wearing Gucci Rush today. I hadn’t worn it in a long time so I thought why not. I’m kind of meh about it, but it’s fine.

Hi all! Feel like I’ve been on another planet. I left for LA last Friday unplanned as my brother thought I should come out quickly to see my mother. So, I’m here on a one-way-ticket for now and staying at my folks abd helping out with my mom. It’s very stressful at times so I try to get out during the day. I ran an errand the other day and parked at a meter, and like a mirage, there was a perfume/souvenir shop which I ventured into with low expectations. They had classics and sone niche (Amouage abd Montale) and the young Iranian owner hauled out a bunch of vintage stuff he had including Arpege, L’Interdit, some Cartons etc. I left with Lyric body cream, a mini Caron Aimez Moi, and a couple Montale samples and an Amouage Fate sample. Wearing a light application of Fate which I really like. Also confirms my difficulty with the loud Montales. Too iso-E heavy for me. Will go into the freebie pile.
I miss checking in on a regular but sometimes do a quick read before bed (no cable or wifi here. Argh.)

I am glad you were able to have some time for yourself. And what a great little shop you found!

I love little shops like that, I’m glad you found one to distract yourself for a little while. If it’s a little town, try the drugstore next!

It was fun. The guy was really nice and seemed to enjoy talking about perfume and finding someone who appreciates vintage perfume, even though I didn’t buy any. It’s L.A.-not exactly little; -)

L.A.=no bargains, I guess, but lots of places to sniff. I thought you’d just flown into LAX and had gone elsewhere to see your mother.

Thanks. I do take small breaks. I just need to remind myself that this isn’t forever.

Wearing Hanae Mori Hanae. It was a blind buy for me. I’ve actually received quite a few compliments on it.

I’m soaking up the last few days of summer so I decided to wear, Dune by Christian Dior. Beachy, salty, deliciousness.
