Another week rolls around...what fragrance are you wearing today?
I'm wearing Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, in the original Eau de Toilette version.
Reminder: this Friday, 7/17, will be Italian Niche Friday — wear something from Acqua di Parma, Lorenzo Villoresi, i Profumi di Firenze, Santa Maria Novella, or any other Italian niche brand.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is Parma nel XV secolo via Wikimedia Commons.
I’m wearing Ellen Tracy Bronze, a nice and light lemony heliotrope scent in a super ugly bottle.
And yay, I know what I’m going to wear on Friday!
Agree that bottle was not the best. I can’t remember who holds Ellen Tracy’s fragrance license, but they have not really done all that well by her, have they?
The bottle is much worse IRL.
This was a blind buy based on recommendations from a couple of lovely MUAers, and I’m really not disappointed, especially for the price.
People like Pretty Petals as well, but I agree that the whole line seems to be randomly put together just because.
I was curious and looked it up on Fragrantica, which says it is “signed by Pierre Negrin.” Have no idea what “signed by” means in this context… but perhaps short of taking full credit for creation? Anyway, he’s done some Amouages and Nirvana Black…. all info is from Fragrantica!
Thank you! I never smelled anything else “signed by” him, but this one is really nice.
He is the perfumer, that’s all.
If you look further down the list of reviews, you’ll see that Jeffrey Dame posted that he developed this scent with rhe Firmenich team in 2010 when he was a consultant to the Ellen Tracy licensee, so it sounds like it was a group effort to me ‘signed’ off by Monsieur Negrin.
Ah. Laila. I missed that. I see his comment. Thanks!
I wonder if there are similarities between his Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli and Bronze?
I have one Ellen Tracy scent which I rarely wear, and this is the first mention of Ellen Tracy that I remember seeing on NST. Bronze sounds great, and boy is it cheap as chips.
Laila, it would almost certainly be the opposite, that the creative team, headed by JD, signed off on Negrin’s formula. “Signed by” really just means he was the perfumer, and generally perfumers work under creative direction.
Thanks very much for the clarification, I wondered how that worked.
I have and enjoy this one, too, I bought it for the same reasons as you and agree the scent is very nice but the bottle, not so nice. I believe Jeffrey Dame was the perfumer for this fragrance.
Interesting, thank you!
Greetings! Which would you choose for Annick Goutal Songes, EDT or EDP? I am about to pounce…..
EDP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh dear! I love the EdT, never smelled the EdP. Does this mean I need the EdP as well? Maybe in a nice butterfly bottle…
I have the EdT which is gorgeous, and has good sillage and longevity. I think the EdP is a bit sweeter and has more vanille. I think either of them are FB worthy, maybe try and get the best deal?
They are both beautiful. As Hemamelis says the EDP is a bit sweeter with a more pronounced vanilla note. I tend to wear the EDP in cooler weather and the slightly lighter EDT in heat and humidity.
EDP! No question about it.
EDP definitely, it’s super lush!
Nothing but Crabtree & Evelyn Rosewater lotion for me today because I am taking off for Germany this evening. Can’t wait to scope out the Duty Free!
Safe travels, and enjoy duty free!
Have a lovely trip!
Wishing you a safe and fun trip!
Have a great time in Germany & safe travels!
Aromatics Elixir! It blooms beautifully in the heat, especially on a day when I think I’ll be sweating.
I never have the nerve to wear it in summer: it just seems like a fall/winter scent to me. Maybe I’ll try it this week!
One of my favorite scents and an incredible bargain.
I need to try AE in the big heat. Maybe tomorrow….
I can still smell a touch. Lovely.
A friend stopped to visit yesterday, scenting the room with AE. It was very warm, and her perfume lasted for hours. Mmmm!
AE is a constant compliment-getter for me. 🙂
Hello, scent twin! I am wearing Elixir in honor of Greece today, because it is a chypre.
SOTD is Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d’Iris. Kind of reminds me of Vanille Galante, with its soft, sheer vanilla note. Love!
Ah, interesting comparison.
Love that one – was my SOTD yesterday. Most I’ve ever paid for a bottle and I have no regrets!
Robin, yu smell wonderful. I’m in Dior Escale a Portofino on what promises to be a damp, muggy day – they’re predicting 80 degrees and rainy.
Why thank you! I think we’re expecting the muggy today and the rainy tomorrow.
Sounding like a broken record–Eau Premiere. Need the neroli/lemony lift. A/C’s been broken for about 3 weeks–they initially tried to retrofit the old ’70’s components, but had to throw in the towel. Will now have to pony up for all new. So far it really hasn’t been too hot, but supposed to be 90 today!
Yikes. Hope it gets fixed asap!
EP will make you feel all together on a day when you need to! Nothing worse than broken mechanicals!
Versace Eros. It was a gift. I’m afraid I won’t ever wear it again. I really dislike it and feel uncomfotable wearing it.
Ah, well. It’ll wear off.
I’m sorry about the gift gone wrong, I hope it’s not one of the very tenacious ones!
I never managed to sniff this one, but enjoyed the over the top ad enormously! Maybe not for office viewing–make sure you have the volume up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsPsM6YYrfY
I’m wearing Shelley Kyle De Ma Mere – linden citrus greens musky goodness – b/c it just smells so summery. And I am very happy that it *is* summery!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven’t worn this one for a while, so it just seems right.
SOTD: Le Troisième Homme (Caron). Very hot and muggy this week, seems like summer is finally here.
I pondered the heat/humidity levels today and that I share an office… Went with a discontinued scent by Henri Bendel. Pink Grapefruit & Vetiver. Very crisp, very citrusy and very cooling – at least to me. It’s been hiding in the back of the cabinet, but I’m wondering if it belongs in the fridge….
That sounds like what I needed this morning! Citrusy Vetiver!
Bvlgari Au The Rouge is what I’m wearing today. This is so pretty, and I haven’t been showing it enough love recently.
I wore it in my pre perfumista days, and I loved it then, and think would love it again.
You smell great!
The Rouge is on my to buy list!
I think this is lovely, too. I own all three Bvlgari teas (and have my eye out for the fourth); Rouge gets the most wear. It’s so comforting.
I can’t wait to try Bvlgari Au The Noir also.
Wearing La Pausa today, from many iris samples I received from a co perfumista. All this sampling is fantastic but dangerous. After yesterday’s Iris Silver Mist, which I fell for, now La Pausa, which is very different ofcourse, but so very lovely. Creamy, soft spoken and tender iris. Oh dear…
Another scorcher today, going with Guerlain Terracotta.
AA Pampelune, bright and sunny and fresh. So nice!
I was in Yves Rocher yesterday buying cheap shower gel (orange, vetiver, lavender, and green lemon, $3 a pop) and I tried their grapefruit. You know how some people get a whiff of garlic from grapefruit scents? I never have until yesterday: PURE GARLIC. I sniffed it again after a few minutes and it was still just garlic. I was horrified. Maybe because it’s exposed to so much light?
Ooh, Pamplelune is delightful! I love the grapefruit note, so thanks for the advance warning on the Yves Rocher.
Testing Ginestet Botrytis today. I am having a totally non-seasonal crush on honey-boozy scents right now!
That’s a great one to have a crush on
Ooh! You had me at “honey-boozy”. I’ll have to check that one out.
Botrytis is very pretty and “honey-boozy” is a great description for it!
Ooooh. I’m craving honey scents lately too. Any others anyone would recommend?
I like Olympic Orchids Golden Cattleya: a bit of yellow flowers with a lotta HONEY. Very sunshine-y. And reasonably priced.
I also tried Vero Profundis Rosy recently which is a fruity rose with a honey drydown. Not sure I live it though but worth trying.
Should be Vero ” Profumo”
I had Botrytis but I sold it a few months ago because I never used it. I would describe it as an animolic honey, tobacco, dessert wine and amber. I admired it very much but I never felt comfortable wearing it. A very rich scent!
Sounds a little like SSS Ambre Noir which is also very rich and only wear when it’s cold and mostly at home or evenings out as I’m hesitant to wear it to work.
Exactly!
I rarely had an occassion to wear it. My husband and I are homebodies so it felt a little ridiculous to wear Botrytis with Jammies. 🙂
But those are the ones that smell BETTER in jammies!
Honestly, by the time I was in jammies last night Botrytis had dried down to something I’ll call “that weird room off to the side of my parents’ basement,” – maybe its namesake fungus? – which I actually thought was pretty nice but I will report that at least on me it’s not all rum and honey through to the end…
In the office today with the new Ivoire Balmain – subtle but so pretty.
You smell great! Pretty, pretty, pretty.
Drained my Fate Woman decant today. I smell lovely and surprisingly everything is going super smooth today at work! A huge headache I’d been dealing with is done! (on to the next one….) Now if only our office AC would kick in. It’s hot in here!
We are finally having a day of rain. I’m so happy, everything is so green all of a sudden and the smell is just gorgeous. SOTD is Songes (EDP). Beautiful no matter what.
You smell gorgeous! Songes edp is really special.
Was sampling Momotaro from Kenneth Cory last night and it’s still on my skin– this fabulous dense peach that has enough edge that it doesn’t feel like dessert. I can’t wait to sample the other ones I got
Also, I will be getting together with some other Boston folk this Th to sniff Italian perfumes and eat Italian food in the North End. If you’d like to join us, my screen name is my yahoo address
Is that the Kenneth Cory on Etsy? Have you found his scents anywhere else?
Just on etsy. Really worth trying
Momotaro, the Peach Boy! My kids love that story. Great name for a perfume.
It’s a rainy Monday and I just cannot seem to wake up! Wearing Boudicca Wode and thinking this is going on the FB wish list
Muggy weather today and I’m at the hospital with my fiancé for his appointment (nothing serious, hopefully!), so I needed something uplifting and fresh: my beloved Grand Neroli.
Hope all goes well! You smell great.
Thank you! It turned out to be pretty much the most pointless medical appointment ever…
Those can be the best kind…
SOTD: Florence by Tocca.
To me this is tuberose themed yet curiously they mention nothing about it in the description and instead went for “bergamot and violets”.
Bergamot and violets?? Really? I don’t get any of that in Florence. On me it’s a pretty substantial gardenia that I would almost describe as “chewy”. I like it a lot, and it seems unusual among the other Tocca scents, which seem to tend toward the “pretty shampoo” side of things.
You smell great, by the way. 🙂
Keeping It Simple (and adding some much-needed brightness to yet another steamy and stormy Monday) with Le Couvent des Minimes Orange Blossom Skin Softening Floral Water.
I wanted a little lift this morning, so I spritzed on some Osmanthe Yunnan.
I’m wearing Demeter Beeswax. It’s very floral. I’ve decided to wear my Demeter scents this week, since I have no Italian niche. Does anyone have Demeter Honey? Do you like it?
I am also having a bit of a Demeter week – hello ScentSister! I do have Honey. It is a bit heftier than the usual lightness of Demeter; I’d say it even feels a bit “oily”, and to me has the effect of a somewhat synthetic very dark sweet honey, if you know what I mean? Nevertheless, it wears off quite quickly like almost all Demeters. The past few days I’ve been wearing Salt Air (yes! and some was still to be smelled a few hours later), Cosmopolitan Cocktail (very fruity-fun) and Cucumber (today) – a bit too cool for our very cold winter’s day in Durban, South Africa, but it is pleasant and not at all a one-dimensional cucumber! it has a sweet and milky note about it too. Thanks NST-ers – the Demeter inspiration came from various Demeter comments this past week
Waving hello to you and Durban! Spent a lovely Christmas vacation there many years ago.
Hello! You won’t believe how cold it is here today!
I have samples of both Beeswax and Honey, and I like both of them. I think Beeswax is more floral and almost powdery. I’d agree with Ida’s assessment of Honey, though it didn’t seem all that heavy/oily to me. Fortunately (at least for me), it doesn’t have the urinous note that some honey scents are known for.
Pd’E Corsica Furiosa today.
I needed that opening blast to get me ready for Monday Morning Madness.
Where does the weekend go?
My SOTD is Fils de Dieu by Etat Libre d’Orange. Even though this fragrance has coconut, rice, ginger, and May rose ( to name a few ), it just isn’t my cup of tea. Not a good choice if you live in an area with a lot of humidity.
I found the reverse– that it worked better for me in humidity. I wore it a lot a couple of summers ago
Ooh you’ve reminded me I want to make a point to test Fils de Dieu this summer, in hopes I might be in this camp as well. In Angela’s interview about summer scents a few weeks ago, Andre Gooren from The Perfume House mentioned both this and Dzing, and the latter’s def one of my favorite food-y scents to wear in warm weather… would love it if that means Fils de Dieu will work as well for me!
We match today! I actually love Fils de Dieu in the summer (and it’s very humid here). I think the humidity really amps up the realistic-ness of the steamed rice… but I can imagine this scent not being for everyone.
This scent is pretty much on top of my to-try list!
Maybe I will give it another shot later. Next week I might have a totally different view. Trying really hard to break out of wearing the same type of scent.
You know I’m really of two minds on this–on the one hand, I’m certainly happy for the new scents I’ve come to appreciate by testing widely… but I also think most of all perfume should be for enjoying, so if you have something you know you like, it’s also totally fine just to wear that! No obligation at all to try to train yourself to like something else–if you like it, that’s already the whole thing, IMO!
Anything that works well in humidity sounds good to me, on to the sampling list it goes
Where did the weekend go!?! Ugh, another Monday…
SOTD for me is Ninfeo Mio and I just love the longevity of this one.
I love the coolness of NM. It is unusual for a fragrance to project a temperature like that.
Hi all,
So great to check in here, your comments are so wonerful and amicable always!
It’s been pretty hot and humid here and I’m off to meet some friends at the MFA. Six sprays of Sandal Carmin front and back. It reminds me a bit of Fragonard Santal but has that saffron lift and creaminess. Yum!
It’s a cool and windy day by the seashore. Wearing Jasmine White Moss, which is hard to go wrong with.
It’s Vent Vert for me on another hot muggy day.
Parfum d’Empire’s Eau Suave. A bottle is on the horizon, I’m sure of it, but I’m hoping to wait until next quarter for it.
I also thought I’d try a bit of Montale’s Black Aoud, as I’d heard that it was rosy, but this may have been a mistake….this is POWERFUL stuff.
Do you have a shop around with Montales? You should try Oud Damascus – it has dry oud for about 3 tolerable minutes, and then it is a rich and fresh damascus rose – nearly a soliflore. I’ve often thought I should by some – it’s on the loooong list.
SOTD is one of the seldom-mentioned Aqua Allegorias–Anisia Bella. I bought it several years ago and love it in summer, although for some reason I don’t wear it that often. It is fresh and lasting, sort of grassy-fruity to me of the uneducated nose.
I’m wearing VC&A California Reverie, first sampling. So far, pretty but kinda meh. However, after my one dab disaster with Coromandel last week, I cautiously did one eensy spray this morning and have now added a couple of blasts to see if I achieve something more impressive.
One dab disaster, lol! That should be the name of a friday poll!
🙂
Le Couvent des Minimes vanilla layered with Tokyo Milk Bittersweet. All atop a bit of Songes body oil. Sounds like it might be a hot sticky mess but it’s pretty light. I’m lovin’ it 😀
I really need to get my hands on that Songes body oil!
Me too!
You really NEED to have this! I justified it as a skin care need 😉
Did you purchase the oil from AG or, I hope, an online discounter?
I bought it at the AG boutique. I think it’s very new so not sure it’s made it to discounters yet. But I haven’t checked online and it was a total impulse buy.
Thank you Elisa!
I’ve been using it more than just about anything else this summer.
Just spritzed on some AG Le Chevrefeuille. One of my absolute favorites for any time of year, but especially in the summer. I don’t believe I have anything for the Friday project – will have to dig through my samples!
Love this one. Perfect for this time of year.
It has one of the strongest lemon openings of any fragrance. It’s amazing how Goutal balances the citrus and the white flowers. I haven’t worn that yet this summer – I’ll need to put some on tomorrow.
Looking forward to trying it this week. It’s in my upcoming sample delivery!
All weekend I went totally symphonic with Coromandel, Boucheron and 24 Faubourg. Today I needed a little palate cleanser so went with Guerlain AA Flora Nymphea. Pretty pretty pretty.
Scent twin!
Major orientals!!!
I almost wore Boucheron today, Gi, but instead decided on Profumum Roma Eccelso. It’s an aromatic fougere, marketed to men, but totally unisex. It smells like incense on me, though none is listed as a note, but it’s woody and musky with bergamot and spice.
SOTD Marni, the original.I bought the “creepy doll”-set,and although it’s a lovely low-key rose affair, not very longlasting!I won’t be getting a bigger bottle or backup.NOW:Bargain of the day!!Lol!Dior Homme Parfum 75ml for $25!(give or take the exchange rate with the South African Rand). And a brand that’s foreign to me:El Nabil Musc Sultan, for the same price.Gorgeous rose+animalic musky perfume.LoveLove.I found this local store that sells tester bottles for really cheap, and these two caught my eye!Which perfumista does not LOVE a great bargain??Happy Week NST!
Fun!!
That’s awesome! It is so great when you get really good perfume bargains. I remember a few years ago I went into some mall store for fragrances. They were dumping their Goutals, so I got two of the 1.7 oz bottles for about $15 each! I’d never had a score like that in a shop.
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP
Egads, I must sound like a broken record by now. I have been wearing this for an unheard of 9 days in a row. It also is now on my Safe perfume list. I bet there’s some anosmia going on here because no one cried foul – not a single peep from family members who normally would not hesistate to offer unsolicited opinions.
I have the day off today and of course, what do I do? I spend another day in NYC, like I did yesterday. Today, I get to meet my 18 year old nephew’s girlfriend; she’ll have to get used to the lot of us because we hardly ever do things in small numbers :-). My brother and SIL are also meeting her for the first time – such pressure! Oh for young love again!
No 19 is just about a deserted island fragrance anyway. If you are going to pick one to wear over and over, No 19 is a good one!
Trudat!
They’re probably suffering from the anosmia I have with it. Which is win-win for you! I was able to smell the extrait, albeit faintly and rather heavily applied. So at least I know what it smells like now 🙂
My trick with la familia was to apply 2 spritzes with 1 or 2 reapplications over a 3-4 hour period so I basically end up with douse-strength by the day’s halfway mark.
I’m glad you were able to smell the extrait.
I’m in DelRae Wit and it has bloomed splendidly in today’s sunshine. I bent over to sniff some fresh gardenia along my walk and, for once in my life, preferred my wrist. I just adore Wit.
I have to start wearing what’s left of my partial bottle!
I’m dying to try this perfume when I visit the States. My mother once was given a sprig of Daphne which she touched into her button-hole, and when she got home, she popped it into the garden and to my amazement, it grew. The scent is utterly evocative of my mother, but I love it for itself as well. I bet you smell bewitching.
Wow, I’v not yet met a perfume that can compete with the real scent of living flowers! (at least – those with definite and appealing scents…)
Hello, everyone. Tuesday morning, and I need something of a miracle. Today I have to chair a panel for the doctoral students’ confirmation of candidature, and I need what I’m pleased to call my wits. But ALL NIGHT -yes, literally, from 9 o’clock until 5.30, just an hour ago — some (adjective deleted) workers re-sealed the road outside our apartment building. Between the noise of their heavy machinery and their merry matiness, sleep was sparse. I feel cross and thick-headed and anxious. Mostly cross. No, mostly think-headed. I don’t even know. What can I wear to help get me through without making 43 different kinds of idiot of myself? I can’t think sensibly at all. I got out red stockings before — I’m wearing blue today. Even Dakkie-cat and his knitted mouse aren’t helping.
Calyx. That is all.Hope your day gets better!!
Thank you. Calyx = bright and crisp and sharp — what I’m not, in fact. I’ll see if I can find it.
Hope you made your way through it! I’v realized that I’m generally a bit dopey and almost always need bracing scents if I’m going to be properly functional at work 😮
I made it. I don’t think I was battier than usual, the students’ presentations all went very well, I’m home, and I’m for my bed very, very soon.
Thank you for the suggestions. Calyx worked the magic I needed.
SOTD is Andy Tauer Noontide Petals…it makes me forget it’s Monday.
That sounds so pretty and I love your description!
I am out of my decant of that. I need to decide to get a full bottle or another decant! I miss it.
I’m wearing Mahora today. Nothing was really appealing to me this morning except for tuberosy goodness.
Been testing Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles for the past few days and I’m liking it more and more each time. Found a 50ml bottle online at a great price and it is on its way to me.
Today had to be the day that I was needed at work at 5 in the morning so I wore Jicky, something soothing but skank. Now since that has faded away, I need to wear something else. I think that Sarrasins will do.
Santa Maria Novella’s Eva, a nice enough spicy citrus vetiver. Oh, I should try SSS’s Spiced Citrus Vetiver after this.
Oh, you smell LOVELY.
Thank you!
Sleepy monday, so grabbed la chasse aux papillons, which suited my daydreaming well today.
Bottega Veneta from a sample. When I first tried it, maybe two years ago? I liked it, then the next time, spraying from a sample at the Bay, I loathed it. It had been getting a lot of love lately here, so I tried again and it’s delightful. Any word if it’s been reformulated or was the store one just off?
There are the two different versions – the original and the “eau legere”. Maybe you sampled the other? I haven’t heard that it’s reformulated. That would be disappointing considering how popular it is.
Wait just to be sure I understand–have you tried it now from three different sources, or two?
Oops my question was meant to go to you not Ann! I lost track–have you tried two sources or three?
Fair question…3, but the bookended ones are definitely older, which is why I asked all of you…
Ah ah, I see! Yeah that’s very odd!! I have not heard anything about a reform either, but I’ll keep an eye (nose!) out next time I pass a tester! Otherwise I’m inclined to think the bottle was off… Ann’s right that the Eau Legere packaging could easily be mistaken for the original, but, I wouldn’t have thought anyone who might like the real thing would -loathe- the Eau Legere–at worst I’d think there might just be a bit of disappointment it’s not as lush.
I had a similar experience recently though–smelled Demeter Honeysuckle for the first time and found it awful, like not just cheaply made but actually a foul smell, which makes me think I really must have had a bad tester?? So I guess it does happen.
Italian niche will be easy: I’ve got wonderful ‘fumes from La Via del Profumo and Maria Candida Gentile.
AG Ninfeo Mio this AM, when I needed something cool and refreshing, but I’m craving EL Private Collection this evening.
Hello nozknoz, I have Sideris or Sballo to choose from so I am covered too. Have you tried Hanbury from the MCG line? I’ m curious about this one.
Leather Mountain and Holly commented on Hanbury at https://nstperfume.com/2015/06/15/monday-scent-of-the-day-615/. I need a sample 🙂
Me too!
To show support for Greece (seriously) I am wearing Clinique’s Aromatic Elixir. It’s a scent for some reason I associate with Greek women (when working in film I got meet some Greek artists and media workers who I swear all wore Aromatics).
Fortunately we are back to moderate temps for PDX, so the chypre has stayed close to my body, like a fine, herb and flower scented cloud.
Au Dela for me today. I love this scent but I think that I’ll need to decant some of it. This is one that I prefer dabbed to sprayed. My skin seems to amp the cumin note.
Today I decided to wear Wind Song, which is the polar opposite of what I like. It’s not like it was 40 plus years ago but how many are?
What do you usually wear?
