Monday scent of the day 7/13

Posted by Robin on 13 July 2015 172 Comments

Parma nel XV secolo

Another week rolls around...what fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, in the original Eau de Toilette version.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/17, will be Italian Niche Friday — wear something from Acqua di Parma, Lorenzo Villoresi, i Profumi di Firenze, Santa Maria Novella, or any other Italian niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Ellen Tracy Bronze, a nice and light lemony heliotrope scent in a super ugly bottle.
And yay, I know what I’m going to wear on Friday!

Agree that bottle was not the best. I can’t remember who holds Ellen Tracy’s fragrance license, but they have not really done all that well by her, have they?

The bottle is much worse IRL.
This was a blind buy based on recommendations from a couple of lovely MUAers, and I’m really not disappointed, especially for the price.
People like Pretty Petals as well, but I agree that the whole line seems to be randomly put together just because.

I was curious and looked it up on Fragrantica, which says it is “signed by Pierre Negrin.” Have no idea what “signed by” means in this context… but perhaps short of taking full credit for creation? Anyway, he’s done some Amouages and Nirvana Black…. all info is from Fragrantica!

Thank you! I never smelled anything else “signed by” him, but this one is really nice.

He is the perfumer, that’s all.

If you look further down the list of reviews, you’ll see that Jeffrey Dame posted that he developed this scent with rhe Firmenich team in 2010 when he was a consultant to the Ellen Tracy licensee, so it sounds like it was a group effort to me ‘signed’ off by Monsieur Negrin.

          • Oakland Fresca says:
            13 July 2015 at 4:28 pm

Ah. Laila. I missed that. I see his comment. Thanks!

I wonder if there are similarities between his Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli and Bronze?

      • PriscillaE says:
        13 July 2015 at 12:03 pm

I have one Ellen Tracy scent which I rarely wear, and this is the first mention of Ellen Tracy that I remember seeing on NST. Bronze sounds great, and boy is it cheap as chips.

Laila, it would almost certainly be the opposite, that the creative team, headed by JD, signed off on Negrin’s formula. “Signed by” really just means he was the perfumer, and generally perfumers work under creative direction.

I have and enjoy this one, too, I bought it for the same reasons as you and agree the scent is very nice but the bottle, not so nice. I believe Jeffrey Dame was the perfumer for this fragrance.

I have the EdT which is gorgeous, and has good sillage and longevity. I think the EdP is a bit sweeter and has more vanille. I think either of them are FB worthy, maybe try and get the best deal?

They are both beautiful. As Hemamelis says the EDP is a bit sweeter with a more pronounced vanilla note. I tend to wear the EDP in cooler weather and the slightly lighter EDT in heat and humidity.

Sounding like a broken record–Eau Premiere. Need the neroli/lemony lift. A/C’s been broken for about 3 weeks–they initially tried to retrofit the old ’70’s components, but had to throw in the towel. Will now have to pony up for all new. So far it really hasn’t been too hot, but supposed to be 90 today!

I pondered the heat/humidity levels today and that I share an office… Went with a discontinued scent by Henri Bendel. Pink Grapefruit & Vetiver. Very crisp, very citrusy and very cooling – at least to me. It’s been hiding in the back of the cabinet, but I’m wondering if it belongs in the fridge….

AA Pampelune, bright and sunny and fresh. So nice!

I was in Yves Rocher yesterday buying cheap shower gel (orange, vetiver, lavender, and green lemon, $3 a pop) and I tried their grapefruit. You know how some people get a whiff of garlic from grapefruit scents? I never have until yesterday: PURE GARLIC. I sniffed it again after a few minutes and it was still just garlic. I was horrified. Maybe because it’s exposed to so much light?

Honestly, by the time I was in jammies last night Botrytis had dried down to something I’ll call “that weird room off to the side of my parents’ basement,” – maybe its namesake fungus? – which I actually thought was pretty nice but I will report that at least on me it’s not all rum and honey through to the end…

To me this is tuberose themed yet curiously they mention nothing about it in the description and instead went for “bergamot and violets”.

Bergamot and violets?? Really? I don’t get any of that in Florence. On me it’s a pretty substantial gardenia that I would almost describe as “chewy”. I like it a lot, and it seems unusual among the other Tocca scents, which seem to tend toward the “pretty shampoo” side of things.

You smell great, by the way. :)

I am also having a bit of a Demeter week – hello ScentSister! I do have Honey. It is a bit heftier than the usual lightness of Demeter; I’d say it even feels a bit “oily”, and to me has the effect of a somewhat synthetic very dark sweet honey, if you know what I mean? Nevertheless, it wears off quite quickly like almost all Demeters. The past few days I’ve been wearing Salt Air (yes! and some was still to be smelled a few hours later), Cosmopolitan Cocktail (very fruity-fun) and Cucumber (today) – a bit too cool for our very cold winter’s day in Durban, South Africa, but it is pleasant and not at all a one-dimensional cucumber! it has a sweet and milky note about it too. Thanks NST-ers – the Demeter inspiration came from various Demeter comments this past week

I have samples of both Beeswax and Honey, and I like both of them. I think Beeswax is more floral and almost powdery. I’d agree with Ida’s assessment of Honey, though it didn’t seem all that heavy/oily to me. Fortunately (at least for me), it doesn’t have the urinous note that some honey scents are known for.

My SOTD is Fils de Dieu by Etat Libre d’Orange. Even though this fragrance has coconut, rice, ginger, and May rose ( to name a few ), it just isn’t my cup of tea. Not a good choice if you live in an area with a lot of humidity.

I found the reverse– that it worked better for me in humidity. I wore it a lot a couple of summers ago

Ooh you’ve reminded me I want to make a point to test Fils de Dieu this summer, in hopes I might be in this camp as well. In Angela’s interview about summer scents a few weeks ago, Andre Gooren from The Perfume House mentioned both this and Dzing, and the latter’s def one of my favorite food-y scents to wear in warm weather… would love it if that means Fils de Dieu will work as well for me!

We match today! I actually love Fils de Dieu in the summer (and it’s very humid here). I think the humidity really amps up the realistic-ness of the steamed rice… but I can imagine this scent not being for everyone.

You know I’m really of two minds on this–on the one hand, I’m certainly happy for the new scents I’ve come to appreciate by testing widely… but I also think most of all perfume should be for enjoying, so if you have something you know you like, it’s also totally fine just to wear that! No obligation at all to try to train yourself to like something else–if you like it, that’s already the whole thing, IMO!

It’s been pretty hot and humid here and I’m off to meet some friends at the MFA. Six sprays of Sandal Carmin front and back. It reminds me a bit of Fragonard Santal but has that saffron lift and creaminess. Yum!

Do you have a shop around with Montales? You should try Oud Damascus – it has dry oud for about 3 tolerable minutes, and then it is a rich and fresh damascus rose – nearly a soliflore. I’ve often thought I should by some – it’s on the loooong list.

SOTD is one of the seldom-mentioned Aqua Allegorias–Anisia Bella. I bought it several years ago and love it in summer, although for some reason I don’t wear it that often. It is fresh and lasting, sort of grassy-fruity to me of the uneducated nose.

I almost wore Boucheron today, Gi, but instead decided on Profumum Roma Eccelso. It’s an aromatic fougere, marketed to men, but totally unisex. It smells like incense on me, though none is listed as a note, but it’s woody and musky with bergamot and spice.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Egads, I must sound like a broken record by now. I have been wearing this for an unheard of 9 days in a row. It also is now on my Safe perfume list. I bet there’s some anosmia going on here because no one cried foul – not a single peep from family members who normally would not hesistate to offer unsolicited opinions.

I have the day off today and of course, what do I do? I spend another day in NYC, like I did yesterday. Today, I get to meet my 18 year old nephew’s girlfriend; she’ll have to get used to the lot of us because we hardly ever do things in small numbers :-). My brother and SIL are also meeting her for the first time – such pressure! Oh for young love again!

My mother once was given a sprig of Daphne which she touched into her button-hole, and when she got home, she popped it into the garden and to my amazement, it grew. The scent is utterly evocative of my mother, but I love it for itself as well. I bet you smell bewitching.

Hello, everyone. Tuesday morning, and I need something of a miracle. Today I have to chair a panel for the doctoral students’ confirmation of candidature, and I need what I’m pleased to call my wits. But ALL NIGHT -yes, literally, from 9 o’clock until 5.30, just an hour ago — some (adjective deleted) workers re-sealed the road outside our apartment building. Between the noise of their heavy machinery and their merry matiness, sleep was sparse. I feel cross and thick-headed and anxious. Mostly cross. No, mostly think-headed. I don’t even know. What can I wear to help get me through without making 43 different kinds of idiot of myself? I can’t think sensibly at all. I got out red stockings before — I’m wearing blue today. Even Dakkie-cat and his knitted mouse aren’t helping.

Bottega Veneta from a sample. When I first tried it, maybe two years ago? I liked it, then the next time, spraying from a sample at the Bay, I loathed it. It had been getting a lot of love lately here, so I tried again and it’s delightful. Any word if it’s been reformulated or was the store one just off?

Ah ah, I see! Yeah that’s very odd!! I have not heard anything about a reform either, but I’ll keep an eye (nose!) out next time I pass a tester! Otherwise I’m inclined to think the bottle was off… Ann’s right that the Eau Legere packaging could easily be mistaken for the original, but, I wouldn’t have thought anyone who might like the real thing would -loathe- the Eau Legere–at worst I’d think there might just be a bit of disappointment it’s not as lush.

I had a similar experience recently though–smelled Demeter Honeysuckle for the first time and found it awful, like not just cheaply made but actually a foul smell, which makes me think I really must have had a bad tester?? So I guess it does happen.
