Monday scent of the day 6/15

Posted by Robin on 15 June 2015 154 Comments

Sevilla in Details

Another week, another Monday. What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing L'Artisan Parfumeur Séville à l’Aube.

Reminder: this Friday, 6/19, wear a fragrance from perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Aerin Rose de Grasse – don’t usually care for roses much in fragrance but this one is not too sweet, not too green and a little bit earthy.

Nuit Rouge today. Grapefruit and incense. It’s ridiculously soupy outside today, but this one seems to last in bad weather. This should be a good test of that.

I’m thinking of wearing Duchaufour for the entire week, although the need of getting his name right on six occasions almost put me off the idea. So it’s Dzongkha today, it works well with the rather sombre mood at work (negotiations with Greece have broken down).

It was your wedding fragrance, yes?

Hanbury is astonishingly beautiful to me. One of my favorite notes is true, or natural orange blossom, and on spraying this I immediately thought of a Robert Tisserand orange blossom I bought decades ago. I absolutely adored it, but could never find any commercial fragrance that came close to that scent. I was concerned about the honey note in Hanbury turning syrupy and sweet, but I’ve had it on for about seven hours now and it’s been a delight from start to finish.

I googled and all I could find was a link to Crossroads Gift Shop’s facebook where they are being sold alongside mantra bracelets. I could not find an online webstore. I discovered the line at my local library where they were donated and sold for fundraising…..there was a sign listing elsewhere they could be bought …… all local shops…. aside from Crossroads they are also carried at a clothing boutique by the name of Magnolia’s and a tea/coffee place called Pawling Trading Company…all in upstate NY. I have purchased several bottles from my library and both stores…they are ridiculously inexpensive (ten to twenty five dollars for 3-5 ml) and are made with high quality essential oils (not fragrance oils) and really smell like perfume. I just wish that they lasted longer on my skin so that I don’t need to re-apply. But I guess for that price I should not complain!

Ha! See I love fig and I honestly don’t get any fig at all from it. Maybe it’s fig leaf that I like in other scents. It’s mainly tea and osmanthus to me, so if you like those notes you might like it.

Not all the way down, eh? How does fig fruit differ from fig leaf? Are we talking fresh or dried?

And what does osmanthus smell like? I still cannot figure out what that is.

I think think this scent might help educate my nose!

Muggy outside here today and rather hot, in the low 90sF. I’ve trying to clean up the mulch where the dog destroyed the bags and scattered it GAH DOG WHYYYY?

SOTD is the reorchestrated Silences, the Eau de Parfum Sublime, which always seems to be what I had hoped Chanel No. 19 Poudre was going to be – an iris floral with galbanum, lightweight and (even) easier to wear than No. 19.

BTW, I heard that old Silences is being D/C. Good thing I’ve got a stash of the 80s stuff.

re: dog, because some other dog in heat pee’d on it and he just couldn’t stand to not know if she was really there….(I had a dog that would break glass panes out of our front door to go find a girl dog that was in the mood. I tried to help him loose interest by removing some essential parts, but even tho he could no longer perform, he was still Really Interested! Poor old dog…) Sorry, TMI, everyone. Human natural perfumes pale in comparison… Hence these artistic efforts we mull over and talk about here….

We have two cats (of our three) who incessantly play with the skunks… now we have three small skunk kits that race around our back yard at dusk followed closely by one of our cats…. they are extremely cute (the smallest is still pretty blind and constantly crashing into the others, brick borders, or large roots and tumbling…. but I worry that one day it will all end in tears…mine mostly if I have to de-stink the cat!

My dog is missing some boy parts, but he’s less than two years old and he is crazy. I’m not sure why he would have ripped up three bags of mulch, but boy howdy, he did a number on them. And then left the mulch alone – apparently chewing the bags was enough.

Oh, I can answer that one! They are quite different in character. Anne Pliska has a strong vanilla+ plastic dollhead at the top notes and quite a different character than Seville a l’Aube. I found the latter to be airier, more conventional (but still interesting), and longer lasting.

I loved the top part of AP, which I would describe as orange creamsicle (well, okay, I can see the doll head description)… but then it descended into a Youth-Dew balsamic amber thing, which I canNOT deal with.

Can you cope with Seville a l’Aube? Have tried neither Pliska nor the l’Artisan, but inclined to think I’d prefer Seville (Youth Dew-free zone here too).

Yes, I think it is the amber that I percieve as doll head.

Happy Monday to everyone! I hope your weekend was phenomenal! My SOTD is created by the talented Bertrand Duchaufour. It is Deliria by L’Artisan. A gracious NST reader sent this scent along with a few others last summer to me. It was one of the fragrances that I actually fell in love with. It was also one of the fragrances that introduced me to L’Artisan fragrances. Such a unique house or brand!

    PSA for STARGAZERS:

According to NASA, “Throughout the month of June 2015, the two brightest planets in the night sky, Venus and Jupiter, are going to converge for a jaw-dropping close encounter. You don’t want to miss any of the action. When the sun goes down, step outside and look west. You don’t have to wait until the sky fades to black. Venus and Jupiter are so bright, you can see then shining through the twilight. In fact, some people say the planets are especially beautiful when they are surrounded by the cobalt hue of the early evening sky–so don’t wait.” http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2015/11jun_skyshow/

The good news is that Venus and Jupiter are so bright that I might be able to see them shining through the layers of clouds that just won’t go away here. I don’t remember what a sky full of stars looks like!

Kindcrow, what do you think of the Satsuma ext? We only received it in South Africa a couple of months ago and I am slightly disappointed. I adore the Satsuma soap and the Satsuma ‘beautifying oil’. I have not bought the body butter because it is sweeter and less refreshing to me. I still like it though. When I saw the ext in the shop I was really excited but it actually smelled a bit flat to me 🙁 Maybe I need to try it again?

I like the Satsuma EDT, but it’s the only Satsuma product I’ve tried, so I can’t make a comparison. It smells a bit like orange Fanta, which according to the soda can is made with 100% natural flavors 🙂 I bought it to layer with Mandarino EDT from Monotheme Fragrances. The Mandarino is so bitter that I rarely wear it, so I’m hoping that the sweetness of the Satsuma will balance things. I just sprayed them next to each other on my arm, and so far good!

A generous dose of Cristalle EDT for me today. The level in my sample is getting dangerously low! Not sure yet if I would buy the EDT or the EDP (and I wish one of them came in the classic square Chanel bottle instead of the tall rectangular one!)

That’s a tough call – I like both the edt and the edp. They are different enough from each other. At the very least, the edp lasts a little longer. They are just both superb in very hot summer weather. Cristalle is just so awesome. It would be nice if they did a limited release in a classic bottle. Heck, it’s better than most of their Les Exclusifs!

It’s going to be another scorcha of a day, so light layering:

    1) The Body Shop Satsuma body spray all over.

    2) Jour de Hermes on pulse points.

Very light, very refreshing and very pretty.

Another day in a seemingly endless string of days of thunderstorms, heavy downpours, flooding alerts, yada, yada, yada. My garden is one big mudhole. Aargh!

Before this morning’s rain, I cut the last 3 white peonies and put them in a pitcher with tiny white roses and the lovely, fragrant blossoms of our mock orange shrub, which is in full bloom. (I don’t know how mock orange blossoms compare to ‘real’ orange blossoms, never having smelled a ‘real’ orange blossom flower.) The fragrance is heavenly and I want to smell like this! Doing a search on Fragrantica by notes yields Hameau de la Reine by Historiae and Rose de France by Historiae, both by Bertrand Duchaufour. I’m not familiar with either of these, has anyone tried them?

Instead, I’m hoping to brighten my day with Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom on Keep-It-Simple Monday. Waiting for its lemony sunshine to take away my morning crabbiness . . .taps foot impatiently.

Our Peonies up here are at their peak, soon to be finished. It’s so sad when they are gone. They are so gorgeous and fat this year. But the rain is getting to them. Your bouquet sounds so lovely. Ours are blooming with purple catmint around and it looks very showy. I’ve never smelled those fragrances you found, but I was also recently thinking about a “true” peony fragrance. Peony is so close to classic damask rose, but really not quite. There is a fresh muskiness to the ones we have. Very soft and sensual. I would also be curious to find a fragrance like that.

I agree, their scent is very close to damask rose. And mine have been pummeled by the rain numerous times and are just about finished. We’ve had so much rain here lately the bushes already have powdery mildew, which they usually don’t get until late in the summer, and it’s not even officially summer yet! So sad, so short-lived.

I’m sampling Lavs today. Will report back once I can stop herding kittens and actually think about it. Gah!
Turns out the fearful, timid kitten isn’t really; she just doesn’t like me. She’s fine with my husband and I’m hoping the smug doesn’t last long or I’m gonna sock him 😉 I’ve never met a cat that didn’t like me so I think I have some work to do on this.

I know next to nothing about cats, I’m very much a dog person, but with dogs it’s often a case of the more you try the less they care, and the more you ignore the more keen they become. Maybe this philosophy works with felines as well. Good luck 🙂

Nah, with cats it’s a reward thing. You have something they want badly enough that they will conquer their fear to get it. Apparently, with Doolittle it’s going to be kibble rather than baby food. She likes kitten cookies and that’s my husbands secret. Already got her to eat one off my finger which is a huge step.

Another fail-safe is a hot water bottle or other heated surface under a soft blanket. We have “cherry bags” that are pillows filled with cherry pits you can heat in the microwave (“cherry pit pillow” search on Amazon if you are interested). Put one of those heated pillows near me, and I am catnip incarnate!

DSH Scent of Hope, another lovely Iris – centric scent. Would so much like to smell the original, but it is gone, gone, gone. Three Iris’s I love, Scent of Hope, Iris Poudre, Bois d’Iris. I really like Iris Silver Mist, but the super carrotty begining is a little rough for me. Didn’t really enjoy Silver Iris, too sweet. What other Iris – focused scents should I try?

Sampling Caldey Island Lavender (nice, a bit short-lived, but very very nice!) and contemplating Duchaufours. Perusing my samples, I re-read the first three of the Ann Gerard reviews here, all rather enticing, plus a couple of L’Artisans (Seville a L’Aube, Nuit de Tubereuse) that stray further from my notes wheelhouse but sound worth a wear. Not sure where to start…. Any suggestions for me?

Leathermountain, I only have two of his – Avignon and Kyoto. I have to be in a particular mood for these. I had a sample of Dzongkha which I liked very much, but L’Artisan is not sold here. Ditto on the much mentioned Seville. The Different Company’s Oud for Love is sold here but is out of my price range at present! The ones that sound most intriguing to me are the Neela Vermeire’s, but given the price bracket it is just as well they are not that accessible 🙂

When I was overseas I did once try Eau de Italie and Jardin de Poete both by Eau de Italie, and very nice also!

I’m awaiting a small decant of Amouage Jubilation xxv which I ordered thinking it was the women’s version, which I love and which it isn’t. The women’s is “25”. Could they have made things more confusing? But since the “xxv” is a Duchaufour, I’ll be prepared for Friday 🙂 Have you tried that one?

So XXV is ‘men’ and 25 is ‘women?’ That really is confusing! I haven’t tried either one but both look interesting.

I was unclear before, I’m sorry. Those Ann Gerards and L’Artisans I mentioned are, I think, the only Duchaufours I have right now. I meant to ask for suggestions from my little list.

After four days of Un Matin d`Orage–a generous NSTer got me hooked and Amazon is selling a gift set of body cream and perfume for less than $50… and I took the plunge… It is the first gardenia scent that I could both 1. still smell after an hour, but 2. did not want to scrub off after an hour…

But today I am taking break from gardenia and wearing the ubiquitous but beautiful Prada Infusion d’Iris.

So today I’m wearing L’Ombre Dans L’Eau. So gorgeous. I might need a full bottle, once I use up all my other green roses…But I’ve only got one more wear left in the sample.
