Tuesday scent of the day 7/7

Posted by Robin on 7 July 2015 163 Comments

Jean Paul Gaultier Tribute to Frida Kahlo collection, 1998

Happy Global Forgiveness Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/10, is 3 star fragrance Friday: wear a fragrance you would "objectively" only give 3 (or fewer!) out of 5 stars, but that you love and wear frequently.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Jean Paul Gaultier Tribute to Frida Kahlo collection, 1998.

Lys Soleia today to brighten up a cloudy day. For me just a tiny spray is enough otherwise it may induce a headache. In small amounts it is beautiful!

They did bring it back, although who knows how long it will be around. And do not know how it compares to the original.

I’m wearing Eau Turquoise. It’s interesting — somehow I get an iris effect from it, but mostly as a kind of “aftersmell” (equivalent to aftertaste or afterimage)

I’m having some trouble picking out the rhubarb from the grapefruit, which is more dominant on my skin.

Thanks, Elizabeth! That at least does not promote buying blind – a travel set is on my mind and in the Rose I was particularly looking for rhubarb… Others I wanted to include are Iris U, Osmanthe Y and the forth I am not sure yet. I have Vetiver T, Santal M, Vanille G and Osmanthe (which is almost empty).

Probably I will just test them when next time anywhere near enough a H store.

I started the day off in TDC Osmanthus, which I’d been wanting to try forever. I love osmanthus and Jean-Claude Ellena, so I figured it was a no brainer. Turned out to be thin, flat, and vaguely reminiscent of Febreze. Had to scrub it off. I guess it’s for the best; one less thing for me to covet. Now I’m in Terracotta, which is creamy, dreamy beachy heaven!

Likewise love JCE and osmanthus, and I do not love the TDC version either. Not a scrubber on me, exactly, just don’t care about it either way.

Let me be the lone dissenter: I adore TDC’s Osmanthus. I’ve never tried Osmanthe Yunnan, but I have tried Osmanthus Interdite and the OJ Osmanthus. The TDC is my favourite by far, very original and distinctive. And very true to the smell of real Osmanthus, at least the tea versions that I’m familiar with.

Nothing seemed to work today – it’s cool and rainy and not at all like our usual July. It’s too cold for the usual summer fare but too muggy for my crisp fall favorites. SOTD is Byredo Gypsy Water.

If it has musk in it, he might not be able to smell the entire composition, which it’s just “meh”. I’m anosmic to musk and in the past I’ve sprayed various samples and had my husband say “that’s way too musky for work!” Thank goodness he’s there to warn me!

The Rose de Petra I wore today did not get a grimace from my husband which in my mind means he adores it. But maybe because it’s more of a rose blend rather than a soliflor. He also didn’t hate Lyric.

I had a sample of MFK A La Rose that was a really juicy, full bodied rose, very pretty. My husband likes that one! Or go the other way and try Le Labo Rose 31, which her refers to as “dirty rose” because it has a smutty cumin thing to it! I also liked Giorgio Aramani
Prive Rose d’Arabie Intense enough to put it on the “get sample” list!

Regina, I think you just need a little of it in an office context. Maybe 2 sprays, not more. It has quite good longevity, and you will smell rich, confident and feminine.

You subscribe month-to-month or can buy packages of 3, 6, or 12 months (the longer you commit, the more money you save). The first month gets you the holder and the 8ml decant, then you just get your selected refill after that. You sort through their offerings (think Sephora) and make a queue.

I had a coupon for “first month free” so I tried it. In hindsight, I wish I’d used it toward a 3 or 6-month pack. If I get access to another coupon I’ll probably treat myself to a subscription. In my queue are things like all the Hermes Jardins, Si, Kenzo Jungle Elephant, Cinema, Black Orchid – basically things I really like but do not need a FB of. I also hate roller balls, so 8ml sprays are more appealing. If you stick to the more high-end scents, the decant price math makes sense; if you’re going for something like DKNY BeDelicious, it’s not “worth it” (lord, typing that out sounds like buffet strategy – “load up on the crab & shrimp, skip the rolls!”)

And in case you get annoyed by these things easily (as I do), the user interface isn’t that good.

Wow! Had not heard of this but it seems wonderful for those of us who switch fragrances often and therefore hardly ever need more than 8 ml of anything. I was planning to get an Hermes “discovery set” but I’d much rather have four 8ml bottles for $60 than four 15 ml bottles for $120… etc. What a cool site.

Global forgiveness day! I forgive you all for your enabling ;) And speaking of enabling, L’Artisan popped up in my inbox this morning with new additions to their summer sale- Seville a l’Aube is half off!

I’m wearing Bois Farine today, which I adore- it’s always smelled like peanut butter to me. My little sister is deathly allergic to peanut butter, so PB is the delicious forbidden fruit!

Day off work doing housework today, and have been testing a couple of things again to work out what I want to sell.. I really need to cull. On the scratch list after wearing are Narciso Rodriguez Essence, and Field Notes from Paris. They both just seem really chemical on me.

Honestly, it doesn’t really compare in my opinion. I researched some other fragrances that had sandlewood in it that I enjoyed (Burberry Body, Sensous Nude, Deseo). No comparison to me, all are beautiful in their own right.
Santal Blush , in my opinion, is in a category all by itself. It is strangely unique. I love it!

Forgiveness Day….that’s something I could/should work on maybe….though sometimes not always easy..I guess it should be? Idk.

note: hope this is ok to post..the link was to a Christian site..so it sorta fits(?)/may be ok?…but NOT to get into religious discussions at all but an example of the topic of forgiveness is the following:

When Peter asked Jesus, “How many times shall I forgive a man, seven times?” Jesus replied “Seventy times seven”. Obviously, it doesn’t mean after 490 times we aren’t to forgive anymore. Lol I don’t know if I’d reach 245 lol. Again, something to work on.

Ahem…about scent…testing Tauerville Vanilla Flash from the drawing(thanks again:)). Reminds me of a more tobacco-y Spicebomb with less spice/cinnamon. I would like this more in cooler months…not when 98 degree days are the norm at this time of year.

I’m at an engineering conference, not usually my digs. People are discussing organic rankine cycles and economised vapour injection air source heat pumps. I don’t understand anything.

I finished my talk this morning – a normal chat about how people felt when their heating/cooling was messed with, and now I’m trying to engage with complex engineering papers.

NST is great for coffee breaks. SOTD is Marni, my fail safe ‘prim and proper’ fragrance for events like these. And…I don’t mean to blag, but, on me, it lasts forever. I do moisturize mind, but still. Happy with that, still catch whiffs of it even though I applied it 8 hours ago!

Thanks for the heads up on the imperial war museum exhibit. As I live in the ‘hood, will certainly check out it.

I can empathize–I once attended a mathematics conference with a boyfriend and understood nothing. The topic was about theoretical math and there were no numbers anywhere, only symbols. Unfortunately, this was before connectivity and cell phones, so I tried to discreetly read a book.

I’m wearing SL Un Lys. It’s nice and well done, but not much more than that (for me). I have a full bottle – it was a gift -, but I don’t wear it often.

I’m pretty good at forgiving people, but I’m working on not getting irrationally angry when people walk too slowly (in my estimation) in front of me and SLOW ME DOWN.

I hate that too, and I’m not that quick a walker, not slow either.
I’ve been working today with a barely functioning computer system that made snails on a leisurely day out look like they are in a hurry.
I’ve just started watering my garden, one of the few things to calm me down.

Meanwhile I must try to forgive rushing people who carelessly brush past me and hit me with their bodies or their bags, not stopping to think that bumping into someone could actually cause pain and/or injury. Not everyone is blessed with a sturdy body today, and no one gets to be sturdy forever.

We should probably start some sort of joint support group to solve these issues :) Just to be clear, I completely understand that my annoyance is ridiculous (and I don’t let it show). I just don’t understand why I feel like that in the first place… These five seconds I lose being stuck behind someone certainly aren’t worth this level of irritation.

Fire island is an odd one. Some days it smells like a bike ride on Nantucket, other days a strong foaming floral soap, and other days a chemical mess. Today I’m in lather up to my elbows….

There was FINALLY a cool down last night. After swimming and eating the umpteenth salad I got to experience fresh breezes coming through. There was cloud cover this morning, even!

Today was a spraying of Florida water followed by DKNY on pulse points. I smell like a very fresh Caribbean barbershop!

I forgive the world’s it’s collective nastiness, greed and stupidity, and I forgive myself for being suckered into any of it. In exchange, I promise to make the world better in my own insignificant and tiny way.

We finally had 5 days of beautiful summer weather, and I was lucky to spend most of it in outdoor activities, swimming, bbq’s, fireworks, and a great baseball game last night.

Today it’s back to what has been ‘summer’ here this year – rain and cold. I need quiet warmth in my fragrance today but still want ‘summer’ so chose EL Sensuous Nude edp – perfect! Sometimes the musk in this is too reminiscent of Cashmere Mist, which I dislike, but today it’s in check under the slightly spicy cozy coconut layer and Nude is wearing like the skinscent it’s meant to be.

Yes, I love Sensuous Noir in the winter. The Sensuous line works well on me and I have all of them, some were gifts and some I bought. I enjoy the original edp in the fall, Noir in winter, the Sensuous edt (little known) in the springtime – I love this one, sparkling and airy with a prominent magnolia note, and the Nude in summer (I have both the edp and the edt, which is nice on hot days.). Plus a tiny bottle of extrait that was a GWP a few years ago. A bottle for every season! (Oh, and the body cream, too, mmm, love the body cream.). :-)

You’re right about it lasting! I like it a lot but I wish the strange notes lasted longer, the truffle note–which smells like rotting fruit to me. It gets to the patchouli dry down too fast. I think the heat of summer amplifies the parts I find most appealing.

Morning, all. Forgiveness day, huh? I’m sure lots of people would say I need forgiveness, but I honestly can’t think of anything that I need to forgive. Holding grudges and remembering wrongs is too much like hard work, and I’d be bound to mix them up if I tried.

My diary promises that today will be perfectly horrible. Aiee. Usually for these sorts of days I choose Femme, but it’s so cold today that I’m trying Coromandel instead. It seems warmer to me than Femme, luscious and heady in that restrained Chanel sort of way. I think it will help me stay in the present: there are very many things I’d rather think about than the business of the meetings ahead. I just hope I haven’t sprayed so exuberantly that I asphyxiate all my serious colleagues.
