Friday scent of the day 7/3

Posted by Robin on 3 July 2015 174 Comments

Seascape. Red Sea.

It's finally Friday! Our community project for the day: scented body products. Skip the perfume if you dare, and wear one or more scented body products. What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you're not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme.

Reminder: next Friday, 7/10, is 3 star fragrance Friday: wear a fragrance you would "objectively" only give 3 (or fewer!) out of 5 stars, but that you love and wear frequently.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s hot and I have Lush Silk Underwear powder on my legs and Bronze Goddess lotion on my arms.

Oh, that sounds like a perfect mix! Wish they’d do more body products in the Silky Underwear scent.

That sounds great! We’re half twins. I went with Silky Underwear powder today, too. Now I need to fight the urge to try it with Bronze Goddess (since I only have the perfume). Good thing today’s a holiday here… not sure I’d have the strength for the community project if had to go into the office. 🙂

I’m on maternity leave, so there’s nobody to judge me other than my baby, and she really doesn’t care :-).
I’m not really sure about the combo, but I’m always impressed with the BG lotion’s scent longevity.

I have sensitive skin so I can rarely wear scented body products. I once had a dermatologist tell me I probably shouldn’t wear perfume either. Obviously, that is not an option! SOTD is Vetiver Tonka.

I can empathize. Most moisturizers, scented and unscented, make my hands tingle or burn on contact, and it gets worse if I keep applying the stuff. I can test a tiny bit of perfume on the least-sensitive parts of my hands, but covering them in most lotions/body products is gonna sting.

Oh, you poor thing! I have sensitive (but itchy) skin, and try to stay as moisturized as humanly possible. The most recent offending ingredient for me seems to be citric acid, which is like the HF corn syrup of toiletries. I’ve been using Shea Moisture products lately, but I’ve also used plain grapeseed oil (very little scent, and not a potential danger to small, highly allergic cousins) in the shower.

It’s lovely indeed! It is my favorite Deep Steep scent so far. Grapefruit is sometimes difficult for me in perfumes, but I love it in shower gels (Lush Happy Hippy, for example) and body products. Grapefruit – Bergamot is very juicy, refreshing and sunny. When I was applying it today, I could almost taste a freshly squeezed grapefruit juice in my mouth.

Only half points for me this time: I’m wearing Santa Maria Novella’s Lozione Dopobarba Vetiver, which – although ostensibly just an aftershave – is so potent and tenatious that I’ve got it in my regular perfume rotation.

I use scented body products most days, but for today I went with Indian sandalwood soap, Australian sandalwood body butter, Silky Underwear powder, and Uncle Serge’s Santal de Mysore. Because when I skipped perfume the other day I had a meltdown 😉

For a few years in my late teens/early 20’s I wore sandalwood oil and perfumes almost exclusively-as close to a signature I’ve ever had, so today was a rather nostalgic day scent-wise. That soap is fantastic isnt it? I’m so glad Victoria at BdJ reminded me of it, as we used to buy it years ago when we were young and poor 🙂

Naked indeed! I realise I use fragrance as a mood gauge, either to create, balance or enhance a mood, and somewhere to escape to (with a deep sniff) when things go awry.. lol.. so no perfume means no protective force-field! 🙂

Hi there! I’m with you two: I use perfume much the same way as you’ve described. There are mornings when I look at my diary and think, “Oh, right, that meeting, those people, these problems…this perfume, then,” or some variation on that theme. The worse the day promises to be, the more I want a perfume I won’t get used to and forget about. Exam Board, for instance, four hours of intricate, tedious arguments, is invariably a day I choose Rochas Femme. It’s not an especially easy perfume to wear to work, but it’s the olfactory equivalent of a Post-It note reminding me about myself and who I am. My life isn’t made up of battles, BTW: there are lots of days when I can choose silly scents (I confess to a shame-faced fondness for Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Nights) or a friendly floral, or something that transports me into a memory or mood.

Dries van Noten in creme form. Really a great texture on the skin and this doesn’t have the exploding musk that bothered me in the perfume but my budget really doesn’t include a Malle body butter

I could not wear Dries Ban Notten either and now that you’ve described it as having exploding musk, that was the culprit — I felt like I was being suffocated even though I applied a tiny bit.

I don’t wear scented body creams that often, but I love good shower gels. This morning, it was Doctor Hauschka’s Lavender & Sandalwood, which I very much recommend.

Jason Tea Tree shower gel this morning–cheap & cheerful, comes in a large bottle that can be bought inexpensively at Lucky Vitamin or Vitacost. Have tried other scents, but Tea Tree is my favorite. Plus, it’s a nice, non-drying lather-y formula.

For full credit I showered with Diptyque’s bar soap called 34 something or other. This pricey bar was supposed to be a gift from me to me on the occasion of braving my way through an unfun procedure. But I can’t stand it! It has a hissy aromachemical note that makes me think of dangerously low-quality fireworks sparklers being ignited by way-too-young children somewhere just out of view. And it’s enormous. We’ve been using this bar since last season, whenever that was.

The bar makes a decent room scent, first just sitting there in the box, and then each time we use it. That makes some sense since there’s a story about the scent being composed to represent the smell of a room, located at 34 Boulevard something or other, where there’s a big or old or original Diptyque shop. The bar does a very nice job of removing other scents, and after the shower it settles down to something manageable. Perfumes applied after do well, so the only tragedy is the cash burned along with daily (or thrice daily when it’s soupy outside) reminders of said fire. I’m just glad my procedure went fine.

I might lose all credit, however, because honestly I’m only not applying perfume at home so I can test something wonderful at a counter later on today, maybe a Chanel parfum or something niche-y. As a lavender fiend, I’ve got my eye on Jersey.

PS to add to yesterday’s take on Celeri, it lasted overnight as a skin scent. In this morning’s shower pre-34, I got a nice big hit of the ‘ideal vetiver’ one last time. Oh dear, I might end up replacing my Campagne with Celeri, once Campagne is gone. I sampled that Celeri very liberally from a dabber vial, smeared it all over my arms and clavicle, but I’ll have to spray-test it before I can make any want-to-buy-or-not determinations. Curses on too-small samples! Ok, actually I’m grateful for all free samples, but some are more useful than others.

So many words and I forgot what I wanted to ask: great-smelling deodorants, please?

Today I’m using Every Man Jack’s Citrus-scented deodorant. I like this one, feels like yellow grapefruit, but I’m getting tired of it, plus I need some variations so I can choose one that won’t clash with my perfume. I had a Kai deodorant for a while and liked that ok. I also had an Eau des Baux deodorant and couldn’t stand the overbearing amberchemical feel of it. I don’t usually like unscented ones, except for the crystal/rock kind, which I love until the allergic reaction kicks in. Alas. Hope to hear your suggestions!

I bought the L’Occitane Baux deodorant and aftershave balm for the man but he prefers his Old Spice. I haven’t used the deodorant since I need my aluminum fix but I’ve used the balm. It’s a lovely mellow woody incense-y thing. BTW your very specific comparison of soap to kids with fireworks is hilarious 😀

I like Health & Beauty Dead Sea Minerals Roll-On Deo SPA For Men. Yes, it is labelled for men, and it smells a bit masculine when you sniff it from the bottle (fougere-ish kind of scent), but it is a fresh, natural, herbal fragrance.

I use the Lavanila in plain vanilla. I wouldn’t say it smells “great,” but it goes from inoffensive to unnoticeable in a hurry. On me, though, it gives out after about eight hours on a warm day. (They sell travel sizes, and I keep one in my purse.)

leathermountain, I often see Guerlain deodorants when I’m searching for vintage perfumes on ebay. For example, there is currently an array of Guerlain Vetiver sprays and sticks of different vintages on offer. Some other brands of perfume can be found in deodorant form, as well, such as Kenzo. I used to see them in duty free shops more frequently than stores.

My skin is often sensitive in the summer, and I swear by the hypoallergenic unscented version of Secret Clinical Strength Smooth Solid.

Thanks, nozknoz! I’ll definitely look for Secret Clinical Strength Smooth Solid. Maybe that’ll be the one ‘unscented’ deodorant that smells ok to me. 🙂

I have some questions about those vintage deodorants, at least the spray ones. For instance, I had a bottle of Coriandre that was marked “deodorant,” but I’m pretty sure it was formulated in alcohol like an EdC (yet very potent). And someone once sent me a sample of something labeled “vintage Shalimar deodorant” that also wore like an alcohol-based scent. So I had drawn the conclusion that older and possibly contemporary French-language “deodorants” were more like body sprays. Alcohol doesn’t work for me under the arms. Have you tried anything like that in that manner?

Now the sticks, those sound rather intriguing. A new ‘reason’ to visit the bay!

I started the day off in Monoï Tiki Tahiti which was lovely but has since faded away, and have topped it off with my bottle of Azurée Soleil body oil. I’ve had it for years and the scent is still very much present.

I’m wearing Bath and Body Works Energy body lotion, which is an orange/ginger blend. It’s heavy on the ginger, which I like very much. I topped it off with a few spritzes of Orange Sanguine.

I rarely buy scented body products, so my choices for this theme were very limited. However, a while back I was longing so for the old Coriandre that I impulse-bought (cheap!) a canister of the deodorant spray, in the weird hope that maybe the deodorant was an old formula that hadn’t been messed with like the current EdT… Well, I understand now why it’s called deodorant — the stuff is strong! A single small spray is plenty for me; the scent doesn’t seem ever-present, but I catch a tingly green waft now and then throughout the day. I usually wear it only at home, where I can enjoy it and not have to worry about the fume-phobic public.

Just to clarify (since I hadn’t read the deodorant thread above before posting) — this is a “déodorant parfumé natural spray” — not necessarily something I’d use on the underarm area in place of a solid or roll-on deodorant.

Hi, Leathermountain! I admit, the use of the term “deodorant” with a spray like the Coriandre still throws me a bit. But I came to the same conclusion that you did: something with that much alcohol is probably meant to be used as a body spray.

Blackberry & Bay body cream, which I like so much it’s really replaced the perfume for me! The cream sticks around much longer for me, even to the next day. Should warn that vetiver lovers may be disappointed, though, as I find the cream skews toward the juicier side of the perfume’s composition rather than the woodsy side.

Fun topic Robin, thanks! Am trying to recall–is this the first go-round for it? If not, would love to see it in other seasons, to hear what people pick in different temperatures!

Leathermountain, I use DK Cashmere Mist solid antiperspirant every day. It is very soft, never gets in the way of perfume, and it works. It is pricy. Most spray-on drugstore deodorant/antiperspirants, even unscented ones, wind up smelling like I rubbed myself with a block of aluminum. Unpleasant and guarantees way too many trips to the dry cleaner. The DK is practically my only scented body product, although we do have a lovely linden soap in the shower.

So sort of joining in the community project, which I seldom remember to do. Topped everything off with a few dabs of Amouage Dia from a sample. Needed to feel centered, as Audreylicious said, for a trip to see my sisters on Cape Cod. This time I’m the guest, which can be stressful – hate to make more work for them.

An off-topic question for you guys as I got to play with the Demeter line for the first time this week (so fun!): the one called Mahogany smelled very familiar but I can’t think what it’s reminding me of! Any ideas? Particularly curious because a friend likes it a lot but found it too strong. (Claimed “people actually move away from you”–I’m a little skeptical whether that’s necessarily true, but anyway a more refined but pricier version would be an acceptable trade-off in this case.) Thanks guys!

I was very tempted by my tub of EL BG whipped body butter or the BG dry oil spray, but just wasn’t in the mood for it.

I needed something big and beautiful today to take my mind off the fact I have a boatload of housework to do and, more importantly, that the company I work for has just made an announcement that we have been sold. (On a holiday weekend?!)

Hoping I still have a job on Monday! But if I don’t, my house will be clean and I will be smelling good (and rich!) with Amouage Fate Woman .

I’m joining the legions of folks spending this holiday Friday housecleaning for the onslaught of guests over the next few days. At least my husband is home, as well as the boys, so I have “crew.”

So no shower this AM, no body products yet… but wanted to share my best body product discovery this year—

Pecksniff’s Ginger Flower & Patchouli talc power. I love it.

I have a little trouble with the Yardley powders which to my nose can start to smell super synthetic…

The patchouli in this one is a bit like the proverbial “essence of lobster,” where the chef waves the lobster over the pot… It is mostly ginger flower, a very light rose, and maybe the teensiest hint of lilac. It is pretty, but still quite grown-up and elegant. Not particularly sweet for a talc–miles less sweet than the Yardley’s at least. I would say it is unisex, but a bit more feminine (whatever that means!!) than masculine, although the packaging swings masculine. Nice tin too!

I don’t really smell any patch…If it is there, it’s not detectable. To me, it’s more of a floral with a hint of ginger and maybe honey or lightly sweet. I tried to look it up on the Pecksniff’s website but couldn’t find GFP anywhere. I can’t believe that they discontinued this scent. It’s the best one that I’ve sniffed from their bath product line, IMHO.

It is all about the nooks and crannies… I have way more than I did when I was young. Gravity does not help. Talc helps you feel fresh and dry, so it is nice to apply a light dusting after a shower… Women tend to have more…errr… folds…and in a hot humid climate, a little dusting mid-day when a little damp with heat is lovely when you cannot get to a cold shower right away.

So while I failed (or did not get credit for) today’s community challenge, I continued my American Perfumers week. Seattle Chocolate is by Ellen Covey. I’m wearing Amouage Lyric body cream on the backs of my hands and forearms. It’s really more of a cream version of the perfume than a body product; it would be rather suffocating if one really applied it all over the body. It’s very pleasant and possibly more ylang ylang and less rose than the perfume.

I used a Trilogy body wash which probably doesn’t count because it doesn’t try to be scented, it just happens to smell that way, followed by L’heure Bleue body lotion which I swear I never bought and don’t remember being given. So, it’s a complete serendipity because this might well be my preferred way to wear LHB.

It’s sort of like Amour de Cacao only dusty: cocoa powder, malt powder, and ground hazelnuts bathed in vanilla and orange zest. Completely edible-smelling. Much less sweet than you would imagine considering the Aquolina flagship products.

Oh, that was a great scent. Wish they had not discontinued it.

Fate was an apropos choice. I hope it works out for you, too. I worked at a hospital for ten years that just closed one day and flooded the city with medical professionals looking for jobs. I’m glad things happened the way they did because I wouldn’t have the job I have now(which I really like). Sending positive vibes your way…

No scented body products for me today, but I couldn’t resist spraying a bit of OJ Isfarkand. It’s all brightness and lime with a dash of pink pepper. Really suits the summertime holiday vibe.

Wearing Estee Lauder Celadon, which is a lovely bitterish green aldehyde floral. If you removed the anisic/tarragon from Aliage and crossed it with vintage Rive Gauche and add a touch more wood in the drydown. Perfectly summer in its grassy green florality and a shame they haven’t brought it back.

Oh oh oh I am so glad you posted about this scent! I have Pavilion and it’s relatively easy to access White Shoulders, but Celadon always sounded like the most lovely scent of that trio, for my taste. I’ve never been in contact with anyone who even mentioned wearing it before! It sounds exactly like what I imagined. Thank you for sharing your impressions!

Diptyque creme du soin, which I don’t often wear, as it is very rosy+green, and I think it might clash with other scents I wear/the world.
Maybe it isn’t so bad, though? Anyone familiar with this?
I’ve been wearing nuxe dry oil a lot lately, which I got very cheaply and is sort of sunny beachy and simple.

Clashes with the world, eh? Sounds like a different brand than Diptyque. 😉

SOTD EL Azuree Soleil The Body Oil Spray. Mmmmm, love this stuff. Glad I picked up backups of this and the fragrance spray, Bronze Goddess is nice but not quite as nice as the AZ, – it’s missing a certain saltiness – and the pale blue AZ bottles are so much more evocative of the sea. This is my vacation in a bottle scent.

Twins, I got my bottle of EL Azuree Soleil years ago. I wanted the Eau Fraîche but ended up with the body oil, which is lovely as well. I really need to smell it side by side with Bronze Goddess, they are supposed to be very similar. I prefer the name as well. BG sounds a bit off somehow.

lush Karma, I used both the soap and the body lotion, it’s just so cheery in winter and makes the bathroom smell good! It doesn’t last long on my skin but that’s ok as it means it doesn’t clash with a fragrance when I get round to deciding on something.

I can’t believe I did it. Ordinarily, I’d no more go without perfume than without underwear. I borrowed back a lotion I’d given my mother because it was way too strongly scented for me: Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus, a (loud) fruity-floral that doesn’t, to my admittedly wonky nose, smell of coconut. The scent actually lasted a good five hours on me–better than some actual perfumes. But now it’s after midnight here, and I am off to put on some perfume. Maybe the Hermes Vetiver Tonka I got a sample of last week.
