Monday scent of the day 6/29

Posted by Robin on 29 June 2015 221 Comments

Narciso Rodriguez Look 20 Contoured Dress in Pink

Monday all over again, sorry! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez, from Denyse's Top 10 of Summer list at Grain de Musc.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/3, we're doing scented body products. Skip the perfume if you dare, and wear one or more scented body products.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing some vintage Diorella edt from an adorable houndstooth splash bottle. I won’t see my boyfriend at all today sadly, even though we are both off today, so I picked one he doesn’t particularly care fore. I frequently point out that it’s from the 70’s, a time period he loves, but that doesn’t make him like this dusty melon chypre any more!

    Me? I’m running out.

No, I suppose loving an era doesn’t make you love all its perfumes, right?

Or any, though I keep trying. You should see him reacting to vintage Opium.

Now you are making me have to think, lol! Some testing so that’s random. He doesn’t like when I smell strongly of a few different frags at the same time. He barely tolerates my love of No 5, so that’s one that gets a lot of attention when he is not around, and hence my love for it becoming my “domestic” perfume. Ok, Aromatics Elixir, Eau de Joy, DSH Coeur de Vanille (too pancake-y he says), Encre Noire, Montale Powder Flowers, anything tuberose…. it’s pretty random list. I must say in general he is pretty tolerant. His fav for me is Coco b/c that’s primarily what I wore when we first started going out.

Sel de Vetiver today. I had tried it before, from a tiny dabber. Thanks to a generous NSTer, I have a spray decant. I was expecting that it would be really different from the dabber, but it’s very similar. Truly a skin scent. Lovely and quiet.

I like the way that Estee and Aliage smell – but they can be difficult to wear. Only the smallest spray for me. There is a bracing crispness to Aliage that makes me think of a precurser to something like Gucci Envy.

Wearing Cuir de Lancome today. I’d only had a sample of this one before and it was almost empty. I realized I liked it more than I thought and went looking for a bottle. Prices have gone up a little for this one since the last time I looked a couple years ago. However, I found a bottle at a discount perfume seller and surprisingly the shop was in a mall half an hour away! It’s also the cheapest price I found.

I bought a bottle of CdR first because I do like it more than CdL. There’s something about CdR that makes me feel I can wear it every day if I had to have a signature scent. While CdL is beautiful in it’s own right – much more floral I think – it is a bit more soapy so I have to be in a mood for that floral/soap combo. But I am glad I have a bottle of it now :)

Cuir de Lancome is just so beautiful. There is nothing else like it. I have a partially used bottle from the swapmeet, and I wonder from time to time if I should make the attempt at a backup since it’s so hit or miss to find it. Congrats!

I found a bunch of minis that I haven’t worn in a long time and grabbed Tommy Girl. I had recently read the Luca Turin description of Tommy Girl, and it was described as a tea floral. However, the Fragrantica description has no mention of tea at all, and describes it as a fruity floral. It smells quite generic to me.

I was recently reading some of my old journals, and in one I kept when I lived in a sharehouse at uni in 1999, there’s a hilarious half page rant about my housemate and his girlfriend. He wore Tommy and she Tommy Girl. I was hoping they’d go out so I could have some peace, then from the way our house was routinely sterilized with said Tommy’s, seeping through every door frame, I could tell they were getting ready to go out.. :) I’d been so happy when he ran out of Tommy, and was so disappointed when she bought him some more. That year of Tommy scarred me for life!

You need to have ice cream at Salt and Straw. It’s the best. And if you like Thai, try Pok Pok. It’s a Thai-fusion sort of place that’s absolutely amazing. The Pittock mansion is a nice place to visit for Portland’s history and the grounds are gorgeous. And of course, the rose garden.

I agree with all of these recs (especially Salt and Straw!), and second Marjorie Rose’s warning about “Portland lines” (but warn that Pok Pok does not take reservations). There are also a couple of restaurant enclaves to add: one in the Alberta Arts section of North Portland (for breakfast, Tin Shed is wonderful); and one in the Pearl District (roughly NW 21st to 23rd Aves). The Pearl is more upscale, although there is almost never a need to “dress” for a Portland restaurant, and Alberta Arts is more eclectic and less snooty. Parking is TERRIBLE in both of those areas, but the weather is nice so having to walk a bit isn’t really so bad.

It’s probably too late to be adding this now, but I realized halfway through the day that I misidentified Portland’s Pearl district – it’s actually a different area of the northwest quadrant of the city – more like from about 8th Ave westward to about 14th, and about Couch Street northward for a half dozen blocks or so (it’s where the Chinese garden is, which is also worth seeing if you’re interested in Chinese culture and architecture). Both parts of northwest Portland are full of great restaurants and some interesting boutiques.

Well, obviously, you need to visit the Perfume House on SE Hawthorne! There is a great little restaurant over there (if it’s still there) called Cup & Saucer Cafe. It’s very “portland” . They make the best grilled cheese sandwich I ever had in my life. You can also then tromp over to the Bagdad movie theatre and get some McMenamins beer. They always have some sort of chocolate or hazelnut ale. My fav was the Ruby ale. Then you can take the bus downtown for some more shopping and sniffing at Nordstrom. You can go up a block or two above Nordstrom and catch the trolly over to the Pearl district where there is vast amount of boutique shopping and then go to Powell’s books. …. A lot of the downtown is in a fareless square so you don’t have to worry about paying for transit. Have fun!!

        HI there- late to this:

        1) Fareless Square no longer exists. You must have 2 hour ticket OR a day pass to ride the streetcar or MAX lines. Fortunately, both are great values: $5/day pass, which can take all the way to HIllsboro and Gresham, even Troutdale, and the 2.5 hour pass, which is $2.50.

        2) Right now, it is literally HOT AS HELL here. We have another week of 90+ temps. Cup and Sauce is okay, but you will see smaller cafes, food trucks and places like New Seasons which will serve plenty of juices, smoothies, salads, grilled food and cold drinks.

These are good suggestions! I do warn you there’s a phenomenon some of us grouchier locals call the “Portland line,” in which folks decide a place is the *stuff* and are willing to wait in line for ungodly amounts of time. I have literally seen lines go out of the door and wrap around the building at Salt and Straw. I hear Pok Pok can be similar. Make reservations, if it’s a big draw for you to eat dinner there.

For perfume, there is NOTHING else like Our Lady of the Scented Wrists, The Perfume House. And the Hawthorne district is quintessentially Portland. The “big” Nordstroms downtown also has some of the limited distribution department store lines–Dyptique, Bond No. 9, etc.

For non-perfume, I recommend a stop at the International Rose Test Gardens in Washington Park (past the zoo). It’s been awfully hot and dry already, but roses should still be in good bloom.

Thanks, I consider myself warned when it comes to lines, and need to remember to make reservations when I can.

And my SO already knows he’s going to be spending a day alone so I can visit the Perfume House. Guess I ought to drop by Nordstroms while I’m at it! :D Very, very excited for this part of the trip.

When I was living there, there were two amazing Thai/Vietnamese restaurants on NW 23rd (also good boutique shopping) – one called Red Onion and the other Tara Thai. I’ve never eaten there when the lines where manageable – like any other restaurant. There is/was? a great local Gelato stand near Red Onion (and just a block or two down from the classic feminist book store that is always poked fun at with the Portlandia videos, but I don’t remember it’s name). Tons of restaurants and boutiques too…

I double rec the Rose Garden. Just gorgeous and great views of Mt Hood if the weather is clear.

For scenic sights alone, Multnomah Falls (the second highest falls in the US) is lovely, and nearby Sherrard’s Point will give you the most stunning views. The drive along US 84 to the falls is pretty, too, with wide vistas of the Columbia River.
There are food cart “pods” that can give you an idea of the breadth of the Portland food scene (www.foodcartsportland.com) if you just want to try a lot of different stuff, and don’t forget our famous donut emporia, Voodoo Donut and Blue Star Donut. I’m a Blue Star gal, myself. Their Cinnamon Spice is wonderful.

Jardin Sur le Toit today. Our ‘winter’ days are still sunny and crisp, and I’m still wanting to wear nothing but sunny and crisp fragrances to match. Lots of sparkling citrus and greens. I’m really enjoying how my collection, and my taste, is still surprising me after so long.

Hi Perthgirl, I am your scent twin today! Sur le Toit it is one of those fragrances that when I wear it I ask myself ‘why I don’t wear this more often?’. So I sprayed liberally and repeatedly today. I get such a lovely rose note from it, and I am usually not good with roses (turn sour).

        Hi twin! :)
You know, i have the first 4 Jardins (and no doubt I’ll cave and let Monsieur Li join us too) and have always worn the others more because there has been a certain type of weather I like to wear them in. Sur le Toit has kinda been sitting on the sidelines watching cooler ones picked in summer and prettier ones picked in spring. But now that Ive realised how much im enjoying these crisp frags on sunny winter days, Im really enjoying SlT a lot more. The apple/rose combo is just lovely now.

I really like that one, just wish it lasted a bit longer. I’ve actually been craving it lately to go with my Aesop Geranium body products, so will probably cave in a acquire some at some point soon. One can just spray MORE! :)

Oliban by Keiko Mecheri, just because I was in the mood for it. Not exactly a summer incense but it’s not terribly hot outside today.

For sweet Holly, who asked how it went with my abusive coworker – I did it! I still kind of can’t believe it. I said what I needed to say as professionally as possible, leaving out all the “yous” and feeling words, and just referred to “the treatment I’ve received” as being “not appropriate.” His eyes bugged out of his head and I could tell that he was furious, but he knew he couldn’t say anything.

Feeling pretty empowered today – not going to lie. Perhaps that’s why I’m wearing an assertive fragrance. Taking no prisoners.

Hi there. It’s a fairly common expression here, as in, “Yeah, mate, he stood there looking like a stunned mullet so I chanced my arm and went in like a rat up a drainpipe / like a robber’s dog.” But be warned: use may age you! I think these are quite old-fashioned expressions that I probably caught from my father. I don’t hear my younger associates using this sort of vernacular. They seem to converse mainly in .txt and acronyms until they say something directly to me. Then they take pity on the mad old bat and translate into something approximating to Standard Received Kiwi.

I think it’s new. I hot it Friday. A new AG boutique appeared out of nowhere near one of my work sites. Of couse I had no intention of buying anything but I was taken with the oil. I like white florals on others but many overwhelm me, including Songes. The oil is the perfect volume for me. And it smells like Hawaii. Comes in a shimmer as well but that glitter ends up everywhere.

Comparing two roses today, Sonoma Scent Studios Rose Musc and Tauer Rose Chypree. 5.5 hours out, both are still present, Rose Musc is more present than the Tauer, which is now more incense than Rose. These are both soothing rather than energizing scents to my nose. Right this moment, I am liking the Rose Musc a little better, (more Rose!) but they have been switching back and forth, so I will try to report again later

Eau de Magnolia, Lys Mediterranenee, Cologne Indelible, and Angeliques Sous la Pluie. I’m enjoying the salt and the white flowers of LM which is on my upper arm, and I’m trying not to sniff it because it looks like I’m sniffing my arm pit.

Still commando… I am actually still in bed. I am planning an exceptionally lazy day today. My youngest has no camp this week and is delighted with my lifting of restrictions on his screen time…. and my 14 year old is coming home this afternoon after two weeks in the UK with his grandpa visiting relatives. I can’t wait to see him. Nothing like two weeks in strange beds and a stream of relatives to make my usually very independent son want to hang out with his ol’ dear mum and shoot the breeze! I’ll probably wind up in Baiser Vole.

Question. Can anyone recommend fragrant hair mists that hold their scent, but do not dry out hair?

I like to use perfume solids (no alcohol so not drying) in my hair. I just rub a little between my palms and gently smooth it over my hair. Mine tends to be frizzy so this not only smells good but helps with the fly-aways. My favorite solid is Diptyque L’Ombre dans l’eau, but I imagine any would work.

On hair perfume, what about using regular perfume but only spray on the underneath hair, near the base of the neck? I do this and if it’s dried my hair I haven’t noticed because it’s not really visible..

I think I’m going to go with Etro Etra today. It’s bright and refreshing, but not at all generic. I love the cardamom blast, and there’s a satisfying mix of woods and florals, so it doesn’t veer off too much in either direction.

I love Etra! I’ve been trying to make my sample last as long as possible, but I think I’ll have to buy a FB soon. It reminds me a bit of Voyage d’Hermes, but I much prefer the cardamom of Etra. You smell wonderful :)

I’m wearing 28 La Pausa today. I’ve finally accepted that I need to spray this one with wild abandon and that getting it on my clothes works really well. I have the feeling that eventually I’ll buy a bottle, as my 20 ml decant will disappear very quickly at this rate. ;)

Isn’t it simply lovely? But honestly, it is more of a skin scent to me?

Yep, I’ve always thought of it as a skin scent. I love it, but I didn’t think I would want to invest that kind of money in something that fizzled out so quickly or required massive application repeated throughout the day. Today I spritzed some underneath my shirt after I got dressed, and ta da! I’m still getting wafts of it drifting up. Still subdued, but definitely more present than what I’ve previously experienced.

I have the same experience with Bel Respiro. I love it, but its voice never rises above a whisper. I’ll have to try spraying wildly so I get it on a scarf or my jacket.

Wearing Prada Candy L’Eau today. Needed something brainless but cheerful. Also have the lotion from the box set which I’ve never touched. Friday’s theme made me think about using it up – I’m so fixated on my perfumes turning but I might as well use the 1.5 year old lotion before it goes too!

It’s a fun one! The L’Eau has a touch of floral to it so it smells less straight-up-edible, but I think they’re both fun and cheerful :)

For me its Knot by Bottega Veneta, hence the reason why I finally bought a full bottle of this one.

I’ve been wanting to smell this one – love my original BV. Sadly the boyfriend doesn’t like leather – on me OR himself, woe! – so I will stick to decant size. Knot intrigues me though, as do the comments about being very ‘Mediterranean’ – I am always in favour of smelling like I am on vacation :D

SOTD is Dame Perfumery Scottsdale Cassis, Rose & Sandalwood. The tart cassis brings a lift and freshness to the rose and, although an edt, the fragrance has a nice substance. I like Dame’s concept of three balanced elements: a bright top note, a pretty floral heart and a warm sensual dry down (although Fragrantica lists a few additional notes). A satsifying choice for my Keep-It-Simple Monday theme.

Morning, all. It’s still dark this Tuesday morning, but it sounds wet underfoot out there, and the bit of me protruding from the bed-clothes is saying, “C-o-o-o-l-d.” I want something warm and rich and delicious today. I’m leaning towards Sacrebleu. It always seems a slightly excitable perfume, but I suppose that’s just the name. I bet I find myself saying “Zut, alors,” as I read students’ work today.

Uggghh. The alarm just sounded. Six a.m., and all’s not necessarily well with the world, so I’d better get up and face the bits I have to fix. Yes, Sacrebleu it is for this day. Decision decided!

I love your screen name (not sure if that’s the right term?). We saw an Eastern Water Dragon and a Boyd’s Forest Dragon on a trip to Australia, and they are very handsome creatures. So, I guess there are dragons in NZ, too?

Hi, Kindcrow. We have the tuatara, which I think looks like a miniature dragon. I don’t know how to make a link live here, but this might interest you: http://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/reptiles-and-frogs/tuatara/ I wouldn’t say that tuatara is handsome, exactly, but he’s a peaceful creature.

My name is because I was born in the year of the water dragon and I so utterly lack imagination that I just grabbed the first possibility that floated past me.

The weather here in PDX is unreal. It has moved from the stark unforgiving starkness of Arrakis to the muggy oppressiveness of Vulcan. So no perfumes- just cologne, eau de colognes and body spritzes, all kept cold in the refrigerator for a nice cooling spritz in the morning AND afternoon.

So today it’s Eau Universelle from L’OOcitane (got the 10 ounce on sale for $23.20- get it while you can) sprayed ALL OVER, follow by Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino on pulse points. Will refresh this afternoon.

I got a bottle of Eau Spontanee last summer when they were 1/2 off, but a measly 1.7 oz. That must be a jug! I didn’t realize they were still carrying them – may stop in the mall soon and brave the pushy SA’s there.

Get this WHILE you can- you can order via the website (look under resources on this blog) and while there on the site you can check to see if they have the big bottles at a store nearby. I am gonna stock up on some more! The sale ends on July 7, I think.

The bottle is honking huge, and super refreshing to spray RIGHT out of the fridge.

I’m fighting a massive headache this afternoon but fortunately I’m wearing LAVS and it isn’t turning my stomach – amazing! I may have to get some just for that reason.
The kittens have adjusted well enough that we put their collars on for the first time last night, so I’m spending the day watching them spaz out whenever they remember to fight it. There are lots of sudden fits of rolling and jumping around with their arms waving. It is very cute.

She is back at Mom’s and making her thrice daily visits for nibbles and to hang out with her now fat and lazy momma and my cat (who loves having someone to hunt with) Shen he’s there. She’s a bit more skittish than prior to her trip of terror but I think she’ll stick around and adjust. She is still very young and really curious about humans so she may even tame down a bit.

I was kind of at a loss for what to wear today, so I went with Diptyque Volutes EDP. This is normally one I wear in fall, but I decided to give it a shot now and see how it does. It does pretty well, though I think it was a little cloying there for a bit when I was just sitting at my desk. Outside this morning it was fine, though.

Also… I decided to pop into a Marshall’s on Saturday, and I found Aromatics Elixir in a limited edition bottle on clearance. I have a partial bottle that I got from Leathermountain a while back, but I thought I could use a backup. It seemed too good to pass up, so I didn’t. I decided to try the new bottle yesterday, and it’s clearly been reformulated all to hell. I mean, it’s still not bad, really. It’s still a nice rose chypre, and maybe a bit less demanding than the original, but it doesn’t have the richness either. I did a side-by-side comparison with a spritz from my partial bottle, and there was no contest.

The reformulation may gain something with age. AE seems to do nicely with a bit of storage under her belt but I agree, my most recent bottle is pretty thin. I have great hopes that in a few years it may be wearable.

But wait, the neglected Perfumed Box of NST Swapmeet Miracles awaits! I peek inside. The angels sing. Orange Sanguine, I am yours, and you are mine. Breathe deeply. The day is saved.
