Friday scent of the day 6/19

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2015 160 Comments

Ganesh x 2

At last, Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance from perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. Which one did you pick?

As always, do tell us your fragrance of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola.

Reminder: next Friday, 6/26, is Top 10 of Summer. Wear one of your own "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Scenttwins! I’m trying Pichola for the first time ever, haven’t formed an opinion yet.
Today is Midsummer Night’s Eve in Sweden, biggest family holiday after Christmas. Maybe I’ll pick seven different kind of flowers to put under my pillow tonight and see if I dream of my intended :-)

Hey twin! And how lovely…have a great evening. I understand they hold celebrations in some cities here but have never been.

No DB fragrances in my arsenal so I am continuing on my theme of the week by wearing another Veritas Inlustrat Perfume called “Lemongrass and Mint”….reminds me very much of Pacifica’s discontinued Thai Lemongrass….lemongrass is an oddity…I think you either love it or hate it….I happen to love it (I really don’t care if I smell of food!)

Hello NST. I’m in Copal Azur. I had a trip away last week and I wore it every day and it’s grown on me. It’s really quite addictive. I have an end of school fair to go to tonight and I bet I’ll be smelling a lot of La Vie Est Belle. The French mums love this one.

Scent twins. I really didn’t like Copal Azur when I first tried it but it has certainly grown on me. I’m still disappointed that it doesn’t smell at all of copal but I know it isn’t supposed to.

I considered wearing Seville today. My pores were already saturated with last night’s application of Nuit de Tubereuse, though. Seville a l’Aube is perfect in the summer.

I’ve come to a place of peace in realizing that I am so much my mother’s daughter! She didn’t raise me, but as we’ve gotten to know each other better as adults, I have been amazed to see how we are more similar than not. Any similarities terrified me when I was a teen, but now I find it oddly reassuring. We are who we are! :D

For anyone who loves orange blossom, I highly recommend Maria Candida Gentile’s Hanbury. Natural orange blossom flowers, eos, absolutes, extracts and the like have always been an instant mood-lifter for me, and that note always brightens my whole day. I despaired of every finding a perfume that could accomplish that, but this one does. Hanbury is extraordinarily beautiful, and never becomes soapy or overly sweet or bitter.

Interesting! Somewhere or other someone wrote that most orange blossom perfumes make them anxious, and after reading that I realized that that is also true for me. One exception to this is Seville, and another is Ellie Saab Intense.

I’v also heard others saying that it enhances mood – or is a mood lifter, so I guess it depends on the person!

Whereas some of the last community projects left me quite stumped, with nothing in my wardrobe that could possibly fit the bill, this time it became even difficult to decide which of the many options (something classic and refined like Sartorial? something warm and enveloping like Mon Numéro 10? or even something outright weird like Sienne l’Hiver?) to pick.

In the end I opted for what I regard one of the best rose scents available, i. e. Paestum Rose.

I’m wearing Sienne l’Hiver and so excited because this is the first time I have managed to remember the Friday community project! (Have terrible memory//am not a morning person). This is one of the first niche fragrances I tried – I love truffles and looking for truffle notes in perfumes is definitely what sent me down the perfume rabbit hole.

Today’s choice was easy: Nuit de Tubereuse! It will be my choice next Friday, too, as it’s my favorite summer perfume. The hotter and more humid it gets the better it smells, which really helps make those oppressive days more bearable.

Isn’t you hate the disappearing samples? While I was fishing around for my sample of Kyoto for today I found a completely empty decant of DK Fuel for Men. Sad face. But I also found a completely full 5-mL decant of vintage Hermes Bel Ami I forgot I owned, so happy face.

5 mls of vintage Bel Ami? I’m so envious! I’ve only tried the current formulation, but I think it’s gorgeous. Tried to spritz some on at bedtime last night, in fact, but grabbed Bel Respiro by accident – oh well! :)

Ugh, I hate evaporated samples. My Nostalgia decant is suddenly a little smear of syrup in the bottom of the bottle and I’m not thrilled about it at all. The so-so ones never seem to do that either, only good stuff.

Unscented now but I’ll try to remember to dab on some Kyoto when I get home from work. That is Duchafour right?

I’m hoping to get some recommendations from the fine folks on here. What would you suggest as a nice perfume gift for a ten year old girl? I got her 100 ml of loccitane verbena last year which she loved. Her bottle’s almost empty now. The price has gone up to $58 now and I’d rather keep it under $40. Any ideas for something similar?

yes, the Persian Rose is potent…I prefer it as a candle….sadly it replaced Egyptian Bergamot Rose which was an incredibly beautiful amber rose….another discontinued gem by Pacifica.
And just as an aside, the roll ons are PERFUME and not EDP (as are the sprays) so they will naturally be stronger.

I would suggest something from the Pacifica line….the boxes and bottles are beautifully done (perfect for a ten year old) and the prices can’t be beat ($22 for 1oz of EDP but they also have rollon perfume strength for $12). If you look online I believe that you could get a free gift box with a twenty five dollar purchase…..I have made box gifts for friends/family members with soap, body lotions, and EDP and it would probably be within your aforementioned budget of forty dollars….depending on her tastes would determine which fragrance you would choose ( I happen to go for the woods and resins but a ten year old would probably prefer the fruity or floral notes). Med Fig, Malibu Lemon Blossom, Island Vanilla, Indian Coconut Nectar, Tuscan Blood Orange, California Star Jasmine are all winners in my book.

Le Couvents des Minimes has some nice, inexpensive stuff. I think Eau Aimable is really lovely, a light, bright ,delicate orange blossom that I think would be appropriate. Their Eau des Minimes sounds nice as it has grapefruit, but I haven’t tried it. I have tried everything else they have, and the quality is great and the price is right. If you have an Ulta nearby, they carry this line so you can check it out. They also offer gift sets at the right price point.

There’s also always Lush where they can direct you to what’s popular with that particular age group. Their fragrances are intense, but there’s always bath bombs and the like to explore.
      Good luck with your search!

My SOTD is L’Artisan’s Amour Nocturne. I love, love, love this fragrance. I received a small decant of this last summer from a NST reader. I fell in love with it from the moment I smelled it. It is a bit pricey, so I always try to keep a decant of it!
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Even though I’m usually fig-averse, I’m wearing Ashoka and so far, I like it more than I expected. It seems very different from the rest of the line, though, and I don’t pick up on the thread that seems to tie the other scents together.

I don’t own a single bottle from that list, but I have a sample of CDG Kyoto. It’s nice enough but it doesn’t set my world on fire: if for some reason I had a full bottle, it would never occur to me to wear it. I like the smoky-woody base more than the top and middle.

Somewhat cooler today. I do not have the BD perfumes in my arsenal- boo! But I wanted something fruity and watery this morning, so I VERY liberally spritzed Wasabi+Pear body and Soul spray by Nest. It’s a weird, ozone(which is supposed to be the wasabi?) +fruity spray, but it’s great for waking up in the AM, and it cost me $12 at TJ Maxx, so I regret nothing. Later on in the day I will layer on DKMY on pulse points.

Haven’t chosen SOTD yet but I’d better get on the ball – taking my son back to Radiology for an additional MRI since there was something they apparently “didn’t get” the other day. Hope we can schedule his surgery for this summer after all.

I still have some Ann Gerard samples I haven’t tried, and decants of Amaranthine, Seville a l’Aube, and Pichola. I mostly can’t do BD’s earlier, more austere stuff – it seems so acrid and/or swampy to me – but his more recent florals I get along fine with. I’m thinking maybe Seville today.

Treatment for pectus excavatum – his ribcage/sternum aren’t developing properly and his chest is progressively more asymmetrical. It’s tough on a teenage boy to feel weird taking off his shirt in public. Then, too, he’s having some shortness of breath after races or hard runs, which could be due to compression and displacement of heart/lungs – so we get all these tests done and then submit them to the specialist to see if he’s a surgery candidate (I think he will be).

Luckily, Pichola did not work on me (I got a persistent Tide detergent when applied sparingly). I have a weird relationship with BD’s scents — either I love them (I counted six FBs in my collection, and my collection is not that big) or I cannot wear them at all (some of his more recent ones seem to be more that way, so I am even more happy with Ostara).

Mur et Musc Extreme for me today. Perfect for this hot muggy weather, although I wish it were a bit more “extreme” – it doesn’t last long on me. Sometimes I wear it layered with Body Shop White Musk lotion, and that seems to help with the longevity issue, but I forgot to do that today.

Trying the original for the first time today and all I can say is it’s a big shrug. I liked the idea of the blackberry with the musk but it’s boring in my opinion and doesn’t last which is one of my pet peeves in perfume land.
Being that it’s not the extreme it’s not a DB. Not sure that makes a difference on this one.

I give myself half points for unintentionally almost fitting in with the theme of the day. I wanted something pretty and uncomplicated, so I grabbed a sample vial of Mimosa Pour Moi. It is both pretty and uncomplicated, which is just right. And probably means it will play well with whatever I switch to later in the day. Maybe another L’Artisan (and this one a proper BD scent), Traversee du Bosphore. . .

Oh well. I wanted something a bit light and beach-ish, so I put on Sensuous Nude. I’ll be sweating it off soon enough anyway since I’m going for a run when I’m done with my half day and will maybe put on Deliria later.

Wearing Enchanted Forest from The Vagabond Prince line. When I first tried the sample, I loved it! It kept veering from blackcurrant to pine and back again in a really interesting way. It was one of the few scents that my partner liked and was drawn back to for a second sniff.

Today, however, it is much warmer, and all that comes through is the cassis. Not nearly so exciting. This is a fall/winter scent, for sure.

Looks like I’m quintuplets with Jonas, pyramus, sweetgrass and foxbins. – big wave to all! I’ve had a sample of CdG Kyoto for awhile that I’ve ignored and several mentions of it lately reminded me to try it for today’s community scent. As someone who loves woods and spices, I think this incense/cedar/cypress scent is not only calming and meditative but darn sexy as well, it’s just gorgeous. There’s not a note in this I dislike, although I can’t smell the coffee note, wish I could as I enjoy that note. It’s cooled off considerably here today and Kyoto suits the day well.

I must be in a contrary mood. Usually the aldehydes scare me off, but last night I wanted nothing more than a dab of Chanel No. 5 at bedtime, and then I wanted more this morning. Thank goodness my sample vial of EdP hasn’t evaporated over the past year. Maybe the aldehydes have weakened over time, or perhaps it’s the warming weather which makes me like this so much more than I expected.

SOTD is Neela Vermeire Trayee, from a sample. The first tine I tried it, in cooler weather, all I got was dry, ashy spice. I like it much better today, in the heat, although the fact that I’m trying it after more experience with perfume might help, too. It seems lighter, and I started getting the jasmine after an hour or so. Maybe tomorrow I’ll break out my sample of Amouage Epic Woman, and see if I have a similar experience.
