Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-May 2015

Posted by Robin on 9 May 2015 179 Comments

Coming up on May 16: our annual haiku challenge. Then on May 23, the freebiemeet.

Today, our same old weekend open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the fragrance you think you'll wear the most this season, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Note: top image is magnolia - It is spring for sure 🙂 [cropped] by spisharam at flickr; some rights reserved.

Hey everyone! I’m really craving summery citrus/eau de cologne-type fragrances all of a sudden. I have a Neroli Portofino body oil but I wouldn’t splash out for the eau de parfum, and as much as the Chanel Eau de Cologne is beautiful, the price is rather prohibitive. Is Mugler Cologne still a good cologne?

Maybe check out Parfums di Nicolai — she does a new summery citrus thing every year and they are usually very nice.

I think it is still very good, and you can find it at a reasonable price if you buy from a discounter or ebay. But Elisa’s suggestion is also great — PdN makes some lovely summer scents.

sure! Mugler is nice. Also, I second checking out PdN, and also check out the classic 4711 Original Eau de Cologne Maurer & Wirtz (cheapest of them all), or Eau de Rochas by Rochas or maybe O de Lancome or Roger and Gallet Cedrat

Thierry Mugler is great. I also recommend Fragonard Santal for a citrus sandalwood (I use Mysore sandalwood for my job and Santal really smells like the good stuff. Another great summer citrus is Ananas Fizz – It smells like sweet limes.

In addition to the other great suggestions, there’s the whole Atelier line, and their sample set is a bargain.

I swear by Atelier Cologne. Summery citrus – Orange Sanguine, Cedrat Enivrant, Mandarine Glaciale.

Guerlain Mandarine Basilic is also fantastic.

Just realized as I was packing that I am _NOT_ obligated to test the old Avon perfumes that were in an ebay lot. They’ve been ignored for more than three years and I honestly don’t care enough to go through the trouble. I can THROW THEM OUT. What a liberating thought!

Today SOTD will be SSS To Dream as I work my way through the 10 samples I ordered from her. I’m pretty smitten by many of them. I tested the new Aedes Palissandre d’Or yesterday and I loved the opening but something about the particular kind of sweetness in the drydown made me queasy. And my husband hated it (usually he is totally indifferent). Anyone else try it yet? I could wait til 5/23 for the freebie meet but I’m ready to part with my store-issued sample earlier. Lemme know if interested.

I bought a bottle unsniffed and am pleased with it. I agree there is an unusual sweet note in it that I also smelled in their previous release Copal Azure, but it doesn’t bother me.

Nothing new here- the usual spin and yard work routine of Saturday mornings’. Wish I could say I won the lottery but alas, no, I did not.

SOTD is EL Bronze Goddess in the form of the body lotion. Very potent stuff and no need for even a small spritz of perfume to top it off.

    Have a wonderful weekend NSTer’s 🙂

Going to meet a colleague who went to last week’s sniffapalooza at the Perfume Shoppe today, her first time there. She is looking for (I am pretty sure) a Big White Flower to celebrate new beginnings. Naz will doubtless have suggestions galore, but I’m always curious to hear more…

BWFs? My favorites! There is AG Songes, vintage Carolina Herrera, Creed Jasmal and Jasmin Imperatirce Eugenie, Hiram Green Moon Bloom, EL Tuberose Gardenia, FM Carnal Flower, DK Gold, SL A La Nuit, Sarrasins, and Tubereuse Criminelle, Montale Jasmin Full, Versace Blonde, and PdN Odalisque. For lighter flowers, how about Atelier Sud Magnolia, Chanel Gardenia, or FM Eau de Magnolia?

Great to hear the WF suggestions. Back from the PS morning: turns out the colleague ended up moving in more of an out/sandalwood direction (although SL Fleurs d’oranger was sampled). The winner was Montale Aoud Nuit, which made her feel a bit like Sophia Loren. More perfumes should make women feel like Italian movies stars…

I am wearing MJ Daisy today, but wanted to ask a question that has nothing to do perfume. There are so many readers on here and I am too. I was just wondering if any of you have read the Outlander series. Everyone I have heard who have read the series love them. I am on the first book and about halfway through, but find it to be a little too detailed and rather boring. Maybe it is just me. Comments? I am going to finish this one, but can’t imagine reading 7-8 more.

    • foxbins says:
      9 May 2015 at 1:10 pm

I have read them all. The author can get bogged down in detail and in discussing events that don’t directly drive the plot, but are there to add color and a more immersive feeling of the time. It turns out that she doesn’t write a book progressively from chapter to chapter, but writes “scenes” that are later joined together to make the book. Once I understood that, I could see where the “seams” are, and now sometimes I skip ahead if it looks like she’s gone off on a tangent. However, if you find the first book boring, the others probably won’t grab your interest.

I love them. But then, I’m a detail person and I love the skipping-around stuff. Give me ALLLLLLLLLL the stuff, not just the linear plot point + plot point + plot point stuff. I can see how someone might find the books tedious; I think it depends on what kind of literature you enjoy most.

I will be interested to hear if you’re still finding it tedious by the time you finish.

The partner and I are going to go sit in hot tubs, then eat delicious Thai food at a place we’ve been wanting to try, and then off to see a movie. I’ve packed eau de campagne for post-hot tubbing.

My package with bargain-priced Amouage Sunshine and Dior Addict arrived. I have not yet opened the box as I had to leave to celebrate Mother’s Day a day early. We are enjoying a cornucopia of take out dimsum.

Think I’ll break out the Terracotta. Haven’t tried it since my bottle arrived.

I think I’ve discovered my new boss has a nose… I wore Diorissimo one day and he commented about there being a flower smell when he came into my office midday. Yesterday, he came in and commented again. First he said forsythia, then he corrected himself. I said “honeysuckle?” “Yes!” I was wearing La Chasse aux Papillions…. He got the note right. I went and stood near someone and asked her if she could smell my scent. She couldn’t. So I know I didn’t overspray.

It’s not creepy, thankfully… He commented that he smelled something more in confusion than anything else. I don’t think that it was perfume even occurred to him. It just surprised me because I never get comments that anyone notices my fragrance.

It’s always so much fun for me when I run across someone with a good nose! I was in Trader Joe’s recently, and the woman doing the bagging commented happily that my bags smelled like laundry (I had brought my own). It had been months since I had had laundry in the trunk of my car along with the bags. I thought to myself, “wow, you are wasted in this job.” 🙂

It just says feather grass on the tag. All the plants are grown by members of the garden club and the labeling suffers from varying degrees of reliability. But the grass is variegated dark and light green and looks beautiful with the lupine.

My goodness, I used to go to yard sales with my mom every weekend as a kid. Brings back memories! Such a fun but bizarre thing to do now that I think more about it. Rummaging through your neighbors stuff. I wonder how many great perfumes I passed by not having a love of fragrance as I do now.
We have block parties here in nyc and folks will bring stuff from their homes to sell out on the street.. not a yard sale, but a block sale? Never know what you’ll find!

Anyone know where I can buy a night blooming jasmine (a variety that would do well in North central florida)? I know there are lots of gardeners here on nst. I sometimes pass a plant in the morning that is in bloom and it is incredible. I never see it in nurseries but know that it grows here.

Working through the 3 tiny bottles of Aftel’s work I purchased a while back. At $5o for 2 mls a bottle, I have been reluctant to indulge. Finally decided to just get over it… So drained my Cuir de Gardenia over a few days earlier in the week, and yesterday started on Lumiere… I do like Lumiere quite a lot, but I got impatient with it about three hours in and applied some vintage Diorissimo parfum on top of it (circa 1970s) for some zing. Sacrilege, I know!

The Cuir de Gardenia was like that for me… but I felt I wasn’t wowed by it enough–not like I remember when I was at Aftel’s studio. I decided I just needed a more generous application. (My skin is so dry that many scents are very fleeting on me). Anyway, it was liberating to use MORE, but of course that quite literally led to diminishing returns! 😀

I actually apply it on hair / scalp as it truly is a skin scent and so why not get it as close to the nose as possible. Also, it feels more oil-based than alcohol-based and it serves as hair oil.

Just got done with the grocery shopping and huge hardware store run. The fiance and I still have a LOT of things to buy for the house. It seems almost never ending right now. We’ve only been here for 3 weeks and I’m ready to find that genie in a bottle that will make everything happen and be put in it’s place now. I was told that it takes roughly 6 months to actually get settled in a new home… so I guess that means it’ll finally feel like a home by the time we get married.

Speaking of which, we went to a fantastic restaurant in a historic hotel in a nice remote area along a river last night. It was quite expensive, but the best one yet we’ve tried and they do weddings there so we may have finally found our place. The curmudgeonly Scotch general manager was blunt and honest when we talked to him about doing a wedding there. I can see how some would’ve been put off by him, but I rather liked him for it. He liked us because we’re very no-nonsense and don’t have kids attending nor want a DJ/dance space for the event. Just feed us the good grub and fill us with alcohol and we’ll be fine :).

Wearing Nuit Rouge by Antonio Alessandria. I was excited when I bought a full bottle of this, but then didn’t wear it much and almost considered listing it for the swap meet. However, it’s such a light incense scent I’ve found myself reaching for it a lot more on the weekends as a go-to because I’m not a huge floral fan. I like that it’s light enough to wear in warm weather. The grapefruit opening helps too. Now I’m glad I’ve got it. I might be wearing it a lot this summer.

My husband is Scottish and there are quite a few “general managers” among my in-laws, this side of the pond and in Glasgow. Their Kryptonite? 18-year-old Talisker from the Isle of Skye. I promise!!!!!– it will open every door and solve every hitch. Voila.

I usually have HGTV on the TV as “background noise” but I occasionally pause to watch a segment. House Hunters shows the 4-weeks later or 2 months later view and most depict the couple or family as having assimilated into their new surroundings already. Yours sound more like reality where it will take time to settle in.

Testing AG Ile de The. I’d like it except for the undertone of shampoo. Glad I have my older AGs and tea scents. I’m going to try Bogue Maai later on and see if it lives up to the billing of Real Perfume.

Does anyone know of a good source for craft supplies with a rapid turnover rate? I bought a jar of non-stick coating (e.g., for the underside of hooked rugs or knitted slipper soles) on Amazon, but it was too dried up to apply. I’d like to find another source.

I was painting again (still?). I had to paint the room I started prepping before I got obsessed with the other room. So I’m done painting rooms for now until the kitchen is done and I’ll need to paint that. I still have doors and trim to paint but I can do those whenever the mood hits.
I am looking for a perfume that smells like cosmetic powder. I don’t know if Lipstick Rose is what I’m looking for since I don’t think I’ve sniffed it. Can anyone think of anything that might have that rose-violet-makeup scent? I want more retro makeup smell than baby powder if that makes any sense.
SOTD was Vanille Tonka which went well with the paint fumes but is now long gone.

Diptyque Volutes and Cuir de Lancome are the perfumes that remind me of my mother’s face powder (she actually used Coty L’Origan face powder), but they aren’t the rose-violet variety. Guerlain Meteorites EdT is a light violet scent. Chanel Misia smells like face powder to me. I always think of YSL Paris for rose violet. The original is so strong, but I wonder if any of the many flankers are lighter. Of course, one ought to try Lipstick Rose.

Well thank you Hajusuuri! Your email inspired me to dig out my drop o Amouage Sunshine in the dabber vial and put it on tonight. At first I couldn’t smell it at all (allergies. hay fever) and then it really started to BLOOM on my skin. It’s a bright, sunshiny apricot floral at first, but then it starts to breathe out dusk, musk, spice, tobacco, wood and cream like some sort of forgotten bouquet of dried magnolias, turkish cigarettes in a metal case and ancient glimmering costume jewelry nestled in an old silk velvet purse discovered in the back of an antique desk drawer. The development is divine.

Mother’s Day had it’s true genesis after the Civil War. Mothers from both sides of the conflict would get together to honor their deceased sons. In my part of Virginia it was/is also a day to decorate the graves of Civil war soldiers.

Cool and rainy here. Comparing Memo Kedu and Tauer PHI Rose du Kandahar. Much as I love the idea of PHI, it is just not for me. Memo Kedu was sent me as a generous extra in a transaction that gained me my lovely travel bottle of Copal Azur…it is not something I would have picked to sample, but I love Kedu….it is perfectly soft and warm, and adorable hubby when offered both arms to sniff, liked this and felt “something was off” with the PHI. So PHI goes in the swap pile. And now I want to explore the whole Memo line. I see several which have attractive notes and great bottles. Does anyone have recommendations for where to start with this line?

Elisa, that’s great advice not to stick your nose in it. Maybe I should be trying that with my newly sniffed Tauers.

I really like Memo Manoa. I’d say it’s in the Shalimar family, but when sniffed side by side they don’t really smell alike. I’d say Manoa doesn’t have the aldehydes, and the spices are different and it’s more resinous? I need to do a side by side sniff again. I got my decant from traceycutlerperfume… she sells small decants for cost (I’m not affiliated, that’s just how I discovered Manoa!).

I have easy access to the Memo line via Bergdorfs. Unfortunately, my vision and brain get overstimulated by how the entire line is displayed (a middle of the floor round table that looks like a large cupcake stand) that I basically shut down and refuse to sniff more than one or two.

Séville à l’Aube has the same effect on me- it just cheers me up every time I get a whiff of it!

Has anyone tried purchasing parfums from Germany and having them sent here by the vendor. I am curious what type of duty tax one has to pay when it enters the US.

I have ordered from both First in Fragrance and Essenza Nobile (large orders too) and never been charged duty or tax on them in the US.

Thank you!!! First in Fragrances has such good prices compared to the US – I guess because of the weaker euro and not VAT tax, – there goes my promise of not buying any more parfume this month

Well, my perception of Peety is that you’re supposed to pee in it. There’s a comprehensive review of it on the Kafkaesque blog.

Sampling this weekend – Dior Oud Ispahan, Penhaligons Ostara, SSS Amber Incense and Nirvana Black. So far I like Oud Ispahan best. Ostara is far too green for me.

I’m waiting for a sample of Ostara to arrive… I’m glad you say it’s green!

Trying out some different amber bases. My love of labdanum is deep.
