Friday scent of the day 4/3

Posted by Robin on 3 April 2015 175 Comments

Repetto shoes banner

It's Chanel TNG* Friday! Our community project for today: wear something by perfumer Olivier Polge. If you don't have anything by Olivier Polge, do feel free to wear an older Chanel fragrance, or skip it altogether. What did you pick?

I'm wearing Repetto Le Parfum, which was waiting for a second try. It's too 'pretty in pink' / girly for me.

Reminder: next Friday, 10 April, is BWF Friday: wear a big white floral. Partial credit for diet white florals, a wee bitsy dash of credit for other sorts of flowers. The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all participants.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

*That's TNG for Star Trek The Next Generation. I apologize for using technical terminology without explanation, and am surprised that nobody brought it up until yesterday!

I gave Misia a second try today. It was just sugared violets the first time, but it’s singing to me today, I’m getting other notes as well. Beautiful and it’s better and better as the day goes on. I’ll see how things go, I will definitely order a decant and probably wear it to work a lot. Really well done!

I’m also wearing Misia for the second time today and also enjoying it more. The first time, the iris stood in the way of the rest of the notes and, although I could smell the violets (but no rose), I found the fragrance a bit standoffish and too cool for my taste, although I admired its elegance. This time the violet and rose are beautifully blended and I can smell both; with the iris in the background, the fragrance seems warmer and more inviting while still maintaining its elegance.

I’m also wearing Le Dix, Lipstick Rose, and Meteorites (on different parts of my body) and will be enjoying the evolution of Misia as compared to the others throughout the day.

SOTD is Balenciaga Paris. I have finished my decant and want more.
A lovely green powdery violet and a little of spicy carnation.

Thanks, Robin, but I am in Ukraine, and because of the exchange rate I cannot afford buying almost anything from abroad anymore.
But we have perfume splitting communities here too, so I think I’ll be able to get a 5-10 ml decant of this scent that way.

Scent twins! I love this one. I have a sample, and even though I haven’t finished the sample yet, I’m considering a small bottle. It would have to be under 30mL though…Too much perfume, not enough time.

You know, I checked the notes, and it appears that only Fragrantica lists carnation as a note. The other websites (including Balenciagafragrance) just mention “peppery notes”. I detect spiciness that subtly reminds me of carnation, but it could be some kind of cleverly disguised pepper.

I’m in the lovely Misia. I adored the top notes the first time around, but for some reason they gave me a tiny fright this morning. Anyway, it’s settled to the most beautiful sweet violet by now, so I couldn’t be happier.

Vintage78, Luca Turin says “Misia initially seems a little underpowered, which may have something to do with the smell-numbing power of ionones, of which it contains a hefty slug.” I have a hard time smelling the top notes at all!

Wow, that’s surprising! I get tonnes of creamy iris with a hint of powdery sweetness. We’re having a very rainy day today, so the iris felt a tad too melancholy in the morning.

Pure gorgeousness! And thanks to the lovely swapper here on NST that sent me a decant of the edt and sample of the extrait to boot (waving at AnnS)! I’m showing both a lot of love 🙂

Haven’t decided yet whether I’ll go hunt up my mfr spray sample of Pure Poison (lord only knows how old it is – I think that one’s been d/c for some time, right?) or go steal my son’s mini of Midnight in Paris for today. I had a sample of Balenciaga Paris at one point but I don’t know where that is…

I am going to have fun with BWFs next week. 🙂 Will definitely be wearing my new sample of Teo Cabanel Lace Garden at some point, and will pull out the 16″/50 caliber ship’s gun of Fracas on Friday. I still only have a sample of it, but (ahem) that’s all I need.

I’m wearing my only OP creation Dior Homme. When I put it on this morning I realised that I can’t even remember when I bought it. I like it for it’s soothing presence, and slightly gourmand character. I wish everyone a good Easter.

I really don’t know. I haven’t got a clue about how old my bottle is as I bought it “2nd hand” on ebay. It’s a shame about Dior though, they had stunning creations and little of that seems to be left today.

On the Dior website they list, Dior Homme, Dior Homme parfum, Dior Homme Intense (edp), Dior Homme Sport, Dior Homme Cologne. So something resembling the original is probably still being made.

            3 April 2015 at 3:39 pm

Sorry, I should have been more specific: I know they still make Dior Homme but don’t know if it is related to the original Olivier Polge scent or if it was totally redone a la Miss Dior — which I thought I’d heard at some point.

Not *really* — it’s also a combination of sweetness and spice but definitely with different sweets and spices. I guess it is close enough to make the synapse fire for me, though! Also, it has enough oomph to feel festive but not so much to suffocate me during cooking or my companions during dinner.

AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH. RIP phone. (I did get one of those rubbery-plastic case things for mine, about $5 on Amazon, and even though I’ve dropped it about four times since, it’s survived intact. But I suppose it matters how the phone lands, too. It could probably still crack even in the case.)

Sorry to hear. It’s worth checking out repairs – when I smashed my phone screen a few months ago, I found a place that replaced screens – 1 hour, $100. Cheaper than a new phone.

If it’s an iPhone, call Apple to see if they can fix it in-store and if the first store says there’s nothing they can do, try calling another store. A friend of mine had this experience and to say that I was shocked at the divergent response from store to store is an understatement.

Neither of my OP scents had the right oomph, so I’m wearing Kiehl’s Musk lotion and Absolue Pour le Soir (which I’ve consistently liked, but today, is making me swoon). Too much oomph, perhaps. I’m hiding until this calms down a bit.

I love that Tauer offers sets of three 15 ml bottles, although even choosing three is difficult! So far I have two sets, including all 4 of his roses (not counting Rose Flash which must be purchased separately), Carillon Pour Un Ange, and L’Air du Desert Marocain. Love them all, although it took me a while to appreciate the weird murky greenness of Carillon! And the bottles are so cute and portable.

I got my little bottle on eBay a couple of years ago for about $40, so eBay is an option, but also a gamble. If the vintage is in good shape then it’s a total win. Generally I’ve had good luck with vintages from eBay. I check the seller’s rating and read any info they have about how they have stored the perfume, where they got it, etc.

I have not tried Sunshine on skin. On paper blotter, I did not like the opening. I kept the blotter anyway along with the 1-page handout for it. The SA also promised to mail me a manufacturer’s sample when they’re back in stock (methinks I should not hold my breath). Anyway, I had forgotten that I left the paper blotter in my purse but a day later, I kept smelling this wonderful fragrance that was a more flowery version of TF Tobacco Vanille and it turned out to be Sunshine! Let’s see how I do with a real sample once I get it.

P.S. It’s a week later and I am stiff huffing the paper and the paper blotter like an addict. Le sigh.

Yes! The blond tobacco note plus a dream of a magnolia note (reminded me of the dinner-plate sized magnolias I saw in North Carolina, my friend picked one from the bush and put it in a water glass beside the head of my bed). But I know what you mean about the opening. It’s like being smothered in apricot compote till it calms down and does it’s Amouage blending magic with the other notes. I’m so bummed that it costs over $400 for a bottle.

SOTM is my only OP, Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her, an easy pretty lavender. I did have a sample of Balenciaga Paris, but I must have used it up and it seemed a bit wan to me anyway (I guess I like my violets with more bite, like TF Violet Blonde or Guerlain Insolence EDP).

Wearing Misia today, like many others! The first time I wore it I thought it was too simple. Now I understand it’s *deceptively* simple: there’s a lot going on and it unfolds slowly, revealing all its nuances over time. There’s something clear about it, like glass, or maybe the clarity of a ringing bell.

SOTD is Misia (Thanks again galbanumgal!). The huge amount of ionone used to produce the violet note reads vinyl on my skin. Anyone else have that experience? I like it, but will maybe like it more in warmer weather.
Just a couple of scents I wore this week (I always read NST, but post less frequently).
Keora Jean Couturier – a less complex and NOT animalic cousin to Bal a Versailles.
Eclix La Perla – musk and powder and cocoa and pleasantry.
Any thoughts on these? (Nice review of Eclix, Robin.)

Bear – I didn’t get as much plastic as I would get in something like AG Violette, but it was getting to the synthetic mode. It singed much more strongly of a florescent purple kind of nearly apple smell. Too bad – I found the drydown to be rather pleasant.

AnnS, it immediately reminded me of Ma Dame Jean Paul Gaultier – the difference being Ma Dame wanted the whimsy/gimmick of vinyl, I don’t think that was OP’s intent.
But push comes to shove, I like it – hope it works better in warmer weather.

I’m just going to put it behind me with the rest of some LE’s that I thought were good but really not FBW, and save my pennies for the next release. I seem to be sensitive to violets anyway. They almost always go to plastic, even the nice ones that I really wanted to like. I don’t have any major violet fragrances, so it could just be my nose. BTW – thank for the tip on an SA at Nordies. I’ve needed a new SA for a while….

I must be smelling this one like you do. “Violet cloud” is right on the nose for me.

BP feels like a “vanity table” perfume — a whoosh of hair lacquer, then a touch of lipstick, with a bit of face powder. It’s elegant without being austere, classy without being intimidating.

I think . . . I like it. It’s a nice surprise. Most definitely enjoying it much, much more than the fruity La vie est belle.

I’m wearing my only Polge scent (after I read through the list), Balenciaga Paris, which seems to be the hit today at NST. It’s lovely. It is my perfume to wear when I want something very subtle, but radiant. I think the only other thing in my collection that wears like this is Prada’s L’Eau Ambrée. Not sillage monsters, but quiet hums through the day.

Another thought–I wonder if the perfumers ever read our Fridays devoted to their work? It has to be a strange Valentine out of season to have people deliberately as a group walking around in one’s creations. I hope it’s a joy to them, and a laugh. We all have such strong ideas about what we love, and we certainly love perfume. Long may Polge (and the other noses) create. . .and down with the (expletives deleted) IFRA regulations that hamper their genius! Be well.

I am also wearing Balenciaga Paris today, from a mini that should last me for a while. It’s not one of my true loves, but definitely suited to a warm, rainy early spring day.

I also thought (hoped?) TNG = The New Guy!

Planned to wear Midnight in Paris, but ended up in Ecens Mythique, needing the warmth.

Well, you smell wonderful, anyway. I think I need a bottle of JM.

I had planned to wear Balenciaga Paris, but L’Heure Bleue jumped into my hand this morning instead, and it was exactly the right choice.

The only thing by Polge the Younger that I have is Dior Homme, so that is what I’m wearing today.

SOTD is Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, which might be a sort of beginner’s chypre, lovely and easy to wear. I forgot I had a sample of Dior Homme, but might have gone with 31RC anyway.

Apparently I’m a huge nerd, because despite it taking me something like a year of reading perfume blogs to really get a handle on all the abbreviations, it never occurred to me that anyone would be confused by TNG.
