Thursday scent of the day 4/2

Posted by Robin on 2 April 2015 166 Comments

Balenciaga menswear campaign

Happy Thursday! If you have a free moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Balenciaga Paris.

Reminder: this Friday, 3 April, is Chanel TNG: wear something by perfumer Olivier Polge. If you don't have anything by Olivier Polge, do feel free to wear an older Chanel fragrance, or skip it altogether. Update for those of you who did not watch Star Trek: TNG is The Next Generation.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere, and some Enlevement au Serail on my arm. I feel quite gloriously fragrant!

I’ve been teleported into the bakery today, holding a plate of hot buttered toast with apricot jam. Jeux de Peau by Uncle Serge.

I like Jeux de Peau, but I can’t take it seriously. Smells like a toasted croissant with jam to me (like your toast, but with the butter on the INside!) as well.

Today I’m wearing TF Shanghai Lily. I’ve fallen for this hard. And I don’t even like Lily that much! Anyhow, I have two questions: (1) is there anything out there similar to this for a more reasonable price (I know others have mentioned DK Gold). (2) I am curious what Tom Ford other people think is worth the $$$

I very much enjoy my decant of Shaghai Lily but due to the high price will probably never spring for a FB. I think Shanghai Lily has some similarities to the modern version of Opium, and I do have FBs of Sahara Noir and Violet Blonde (no regrets).

I liked Shanghai Lily myself. I thought it was like a mashup of the spicy lily of DK Gold and the spicy-creamy woods of DK Black Cashmere… but since I own both of those, I didn’t see the need to buy the TF.

The only other TFs I own are: a big bottle of (discontinued) Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, which I lOVE, in contrast to original Blk O which I can’t stand on myself, though when I’ve smelled it on a guy it seemed just right. Plus a 5ml decant of Ombre de Hyacinth, which I bought blind and shouldn’t have, and one of those tiny 4ml minis of Black Violet, which I bought on ebay after draining two samples.

I remember Octavian writing about how captivating Shanghai Lily was not long before he closed his blog, 1000 Fragrances.

You could try TDC De Bachmakov, which is somewhat less expensive and well-regarded.

It’s easy to find decants of Shanghai Lily, for example, on ebay. Would you really ever use a whole bottle? It might at least be worth seeing if you still love it so much after using up a decant.

I tried TF Shanghai Lily only once and thought it was very, very lovely. But my lily cravings are pretty well covered with what I already have and I need big bottles like I need extra weight, so I’m not getting any Shanghai Lily. However, if someone would give me a bottle I’m sure I would wear it a lot.

Chanel 1932 today. It’s pretty, but has already disappeared from my skin after only 2 hours. Just as well, since I have a big meeting to go to at lunchtime, but this is one where I might not even manage to drain the sample.

SOTD is Balenciaga Rosabotanica from a carded sample. Olivier Polge was one of the co-creators of this one. It’s a nice enough rose, but I have others I like better so won’t be purchasing this one.

Yup, tomorrow’s project has me wishing I had some Rosabotanica–I didn’t like it enough to buy, but after Spicebomb (which I love but am not too chuffed to wear when we are FINALLY in spring perfume weather!!), it’s the Olivier Polge I like best, I think.

(Actually I guess it’s a tough call with Balenciaga Paris, which I do think is lovely but sometimes feels too tame; Rosabotanica feels comparatively less beautiful but more interesting.)

Yes!!!! Actually when I recounted I purchased nine, not eight! The samples that were sent to me were Mexican Vanilla, Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom& Vetiver, Herb Man and Desert Rose. I ordered all trial sizes that were available (including Dark Horse as it sounded interesting) except the Desert Rose and the two others that were out of stock which are now back in stock…with the free shipping I am tempted to go back and order those two as well!

Still enjoying the nutmeg infused dry down from the Black Flower Mexican Vanilla I put on at bedtime. It goes on like a cupcake bomb, but the dry down is beautiful.

I just put in for a travel spray of Dark Horse from the same perfumer as BFMV. The notes look yummy: bergamont, lemon, cinnamon, jasmine, carnation, rose, cloves, guaiac, vetiver, vanilla and musk. Has anyone tried Dark Horse?

I’m looking forward to sampling T’aif later this morning.

You smell fantastic! I have been wearing Mexican Vanilla for the past two days! When I get my Dark Horse we will compare notes! I also really liked the Orange Blossom one as it was very light and refreshing and uplifting to me…..I liked the Desert Rose but I have enough rose scents for now….I am looking for something different and so far from what I sampled Dame Perfumery fits the bill…and I really love the prices and free shipping!

So do you my dear. I was skeptical about BFMV because I’m generally not really into gourmand fragrances, but this one is such a sexy comfort scent. My husband really likes it on me, so that nudged me into giving it more of a chance. I will definitely post about Dark Horse when it gets here. Another good thing about Dame is that the shipping is lightening fast. I think I got my BFMV within 3 days of ordering it.

Starting early with Olivier Polge Friday. Tomorrow it will be the incomparable Dior Homme but today Bvlgari Au The Rouge which is a very interesting Polge composition that either works for you or does not, layered with Bvlgari Black. Let me explain exactly how I do this so these two very different compositions work together. Put Bvlgari Black all over your body, I do this in my underwear. I have to use a lot because it does not have much longevity on me but your mileage may vary. After dressing, spray Au The Rouge in your hair or on your clothing or do the generous perfume cloud and walk through it! Lovely!

I just got to test Au The Rouge this week b/c of a lovely swapper. I decided to make 2015 the year of tea notes research. I do like it very much as well. I kind of missed this when it came out. I think it is very FBW, and it’s really inexpensive at the discounters. I do with it had a little more oomph, but it’s definitely refreshing.

I think layering is a bit of a misnomer because I do not often put one perfume directly on top of another. The spraying with abandon while just in underwear is how one gets away with strong fragrances at work! It just seemed a natural approach to layering…….

ST TNG all the way, Robin! The only other show that I’ve seen every episode of is Battleship Galactica (the new one, not the original). OK, I’ve also seen all of the pre-quel Caprica, but that didn’t last very long, unfortunately. I think there is something profound to be learned about what makes them so compelling.

I didn’t get the reference to TNG, but I did watch the Next Generation very faithfully and watched all the TNG movies too. I don’t consider myself a Trekkie, but I love sci-fi. Don’t get me started on the old Quantum Leap or Doctor Who! Soo… big question is: what would the dashing Jean Luc Picard dab on his bald spot? I’m thinking some earthy Goutal like Eau de Monsieur, Eau de Sud, or Sables.

Oooh, AnnS, good question. I see (smell?) Picard in something that’s heavy on the vetiver.

Robin, FWIW, I got the TNG reference. I just assumed everyone on the internet was also a ST fan. Interesting to read the comments and see how wrong I am.

I’m a proper science fiction/fantasy nerd, but I read more than I watch. During the TNG original run I was still behind the Iron Curtain and I’ve somehow never gotten around to watching it (it’s quite a commitment). I’ve seen most of the TOS, though, and somewhat heretically like the new movies, too.

Like I mentioned up a little ways, I just couldn’t get into TNG. Watched the first half of the first season with college friends who were also ST fans, but then… eh. Just stopped, and didn’t miss it. It’s entirely possible that the writing picked up and became compelling later into the series.

Because I have to have SOME regular way of getting through my ridiculous sample pile, I’ve instituted Testing Thursday. Today I’m rolling with my brand-new Teo Cabanel sample pack. I’d already tried five of the eight, but the sample pack is very cool and quite reasonably priced (about 10 euro at the TC website).

I’ve loved Alahine for a long time now. Still enjoy Oha and Julia, and when my summery roses (YSL Paris Pont des Amours and PdR Rose d’Ete) are exhausted, I’m going to spring for a bottle of Early Roses, which was everything I wanted DelRae Coup del Foudre to be. Meloe is a citrusy thing that just isn’t my style.

With regards to what I’m testing today, Hegoa isn’t doing anything for me (again, citrus not my thing). Nor is Barkhane, which I expected not to like, and I don’t, no big surprise (oriental woodies also not my thing). Lace Garden, though, is right up my alley and it is flat gorgeous. White floral lovers, check it out. SO beautiful… it’s not a particularly BIG white floral, either.

It is! That is, it’s not IN the sample pack (the other 7), and I spent a good three minutes fuming because LG was the one I really wanted anyway… and then dove back into the envelope and found it separately wrapped.

Wearing Rosabotanica today, from a sample as well. When I first tried it on the launch, I really didn’t care for it. Now I can understand the herbal/minty opening better, and I don’t find the rosy element as sweet as I first thought…..but I still don’t think I’d need to own it. However, I’m enjoying the crisp opening and fresh take right now, under mostly blue skies but with a cold morning tinge still in the air.

I was going to wear Balenciaga Paris tomorrow, but why not today? It’s perfect for spring. I like it much better than any mainstream perfume I’ve tried since Paris came out. Not that I’ve tried that many, but I’ve been disappointed by some of the popular ones, such as Bottega Veneta. Perhaps there are some new aromachemicals that my nose doesn’t like.

FYI, I’d been planning to get one of the adorable 1-oz bottles of Paris as soon as I could find it at discount, and I’m pleased to see that it is showing up on FragranceNet. 😀

You know, I tried Chanel Misia yesterday, and I like Balenciaga Paris much better. Misia has a more of that cloudy floral musk. Paris seems more spritely and has a bit more feeling. I think it’s underrated, i.e., doesn’t get mentioned as often as it deserves.

Those 1 oz/30 ml bottles are truly adorable. I picked one up at Winners last fall – almost didn’t, and I’m so glad that I did. At first I found the violet too sweet, but I particularly love the woody dry down, and I love how well it lasts on me.

I’m going to wear either Balenciaga Paris or “old” chanel tomorrow. I agree too with your comments about BP. I can smell that it is my favorite treatment of violets b/c it focuses on the green peppery leafy part. It does have a snappy green-ness to it that counterbalances the creamy cosmetic accord. It keeps it from being too linear or powdery-suffocating. I’ve often thought of buying a bottle, but I have a very large decant of it. It would be nice to have some shower gel though!

I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t know what Paris smells like! I’d better try it I guess. Ann, this spring I’m trying many different fresh roses. MFK A la Rose knocked me out. Rosa Nobile is similar. The quality of the rose is high. It lasts a long time. It merges well with your skin. Keep in mind this is my first full day wearing it so I don’t have the words for it yet. It’s the closest to MFK A la Rose that I’ve smelled. The MFK uses superlative ingredients. Some people are put off by the white musk in it, but I like it. RN is much more affordable.
See if you can sample both of these.

Big TNG fan here as well, used to watch reruns in college almost every day. It’s fun watching them again on Netflix too. I didn’t watch them in order as they aired, so didn’t notice that Season 1 was so bad – will have to go back on Netflix and see which episodes those are.

SOTD is Terracotta. I moved the bottle to a more prominent display location because I love how round it is. Crazy, I know, but I am finding the bottle very attractive and I’m not really an “all about the bottle” kinda gal.

The scent itself is holding me hostage, but in a good way. I don’t know if this is really a “different” type of perfume or if it’s just different for me, as my “collection” is totally lacking floral dominant scents. I don’t like florals. I keep telling myself that. But I am REALLY liking this one. A whole lot.

Just when you thing you might have some insight into your scents choices, along comes a perfume that confuses you.
