Wednesday scent of the day 3/4

Posted by Robin on 4 March 2015 155 Comments

Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent

Happy Wednesday, and happy Grammar Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne, from perfumers Sophia Grojsman and Sophie Labbé. I think I'm the only one who liked Parisienne.

Reminder: this Friday, 6 March, we're celebrating International Women's Day — wear a perfume by a female perfumer.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Is that Joni Mitchell?

I’m wearing Ambrosia by Arcana because I wanted to smell like lemon custard today.

That is Joni Mitchell! Lovely ad, and a bit of a shock, as was the Joan Didion ad for Celine.

The older woman is coming on strong in fashion advertising. Finally. Let’s see if the clothes will be more becoming for older bodies as well…

Mmmm… Custard. I am wearing Chocolate Greedy because I am only allowed to inhale desserts for the next three weeks. The scale tells me that I gained ten pounds during the last phase of my writing!

Anyway fellow bee lover, in case you did not receive the Princeton excerpt of the book I attached long after your reply to my honey recommendations, here it is again

In response to the comment about Joni and Joan, please check out the Advanced Style blog and documentary film of the same name. I seriously doubt that we would be seeing such wise and beautiful ladies in ads if not for the success of the blog and the film. Both gave me reason to believe that getting older did not entirely suck!

Oh, I really liked the topnotes of Parisienne – but it dwindled to pale so quickly that I was indeed disappointed in it. (What I’d really like is a stack of those roses that were in the ad for it. Like, every week for a year.)

I got out my sample of Soivohle Lilacs & Heliotrope because I have suddenly turned the corner on wanting spring florals. (We’re supposed to get wintry mix over the next two days, though – will have to see if my florals craving lasts.)

I’ve had it too – my arms is numb from shoveling – the school waited very late to cancel. My hubbie and I were out at 7 am shoveling 3 inches of snow as heavy as wet sand. GRX! I am done too!!!

Decided it would be a rosy day! Started with Body Shop Morroccan Rose body butter then some Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouges and then some tiny dabs of Providence Perfume Rose 802 perfume oil. Look at that! All three companies founded by women and two of them noses as well! Got the trifecta today!

I quite like Parisienne, as well! I have the same relationship with her as I do with Rose Jam; I seldom want to wear it, but there are times when nothing else will do.

Plus, ya know, cute bottle. ( Chief Resident Bottle Ho’, reporting for duty!)

We have had torrential rain to wash away all our snow; this will turn to sleet in a few hours, and give us a good icy base for 6 inches of snow. My kinda weather… I have any amount of foodstuffs laid in, a stack of books on the night stand, the husband was told to stay home, and I am giddy as a schoolgirl!

I think my SOTD will be Fille D’ Eve, one of my all time favorites, and perfect ( if a bit over the top) for a snow day.

SOTM is MFK Lumiere Noire pour Femme. I don’t get cumin from this, fortunately, just rose and narcissus. Love me some narcissus!! LNpF starts out sparkly and incredibly spring-like but after an hour or so it devolves into a scent I don’t like. That’s why it’s just my scent of the morning.

I love LNpf… I do get the cumin, but it’s just a thread, not a huge sweaty overlay. Funny how I really don’t like patchouli unless it’s either super-aged and herbal, or if it’s paired with rose. LNpf is chock-full of the patch, but I manage to like it.

Mals, I’ve read comments that claim LNpf has been reformulated and bemoaning that fact. I don’t know. My decant is current formula. I like it but can’t help wondering if I missed the boat by not trying this when it first came out.

Wearing Bottega Veneta today. Good in the cold and rain. But my decant was having issues this morning–I pressed the sprayer down and nothing came out. I tried it many times before I finally got one spritz. Does this happen to other people also? Anything I can do to fix it? Just keep pumping for ages?

Unrelatedly, anyone in NYC going to the Diptyque (and Byredo) sample sale? I might try to get over there tonight after work.

I do have some decants where it seems the little spring gives out after a while. At that point I’ll normally just remove the top and dab the fragrance on. I’ve only once had a snap on spray top that I couldn’t get off. I don’t remember what I did then. I guess you can crack the top off and just go for it! BV is very nice!!!

So I put on some Kai edp, given to me by hajusuuri (thank you! and btw LOVE Kalamet!!) to kinda cheer myself up that this will be the LAST snow storm of the year. At least it’s….. over 30F outside. SOTD = DelRae Wit. LOTV is one of my favorite odors and I really like this. Opening was wonderful green Lotv. Then there was a few minutes of harsher greeness- not sure what that was. But that was replaced by mixed florals with LOTV prominent but not linear, subsiding to a skin scent that is pretty much straight LOTV again, so I am impressed – Diorissimo doesn’t hang around this long on me! And this is just some sample dabs. I expect I will get at least a decant of this. Have to compare it to the other LOTV sample I got, the Oriza L Legrand muguet..I forget what it is called. What fun!

      hmmm must try Debut!

I had a dream last night that I was logging/hacking into a computer and the password was Muguet1

I got two decants of AG Le Muguet, one for myself and one for my niece. Like a bunch of us East Coast and Mid Westerners on this blog, I was craving the sweet smells of spring. Le Muguet is pleasant, but smells a little bit canned to me. It has a slight trace of a napthalene which puts me in mind of grandma’s hanky drawer in a cottage in Maine. I know there are fresher LOTV’s out there, and have gotten several excellent suggestions here, including vintage diorissimo (if only I had appreciated it enough years ago to get some…sigh) just haven’t found them yet.

I like Parisienne too! I have Parisenne body cream in my purse today and may use it as hand cream later. I swapped away a small bottle of the perfume a few years ago but I sorta regret it – the vinyl top-note was interesting. It felt brazenly artificial.. in a cheeky fun way instead of the sad way.

This morning though, I am wearing SSS Lieu de Reves. A brief gasp of spring beauty on a warmish rainy day before we get slammed with a snowstorm tomorrow…

Do you have a current or older/vintage bottle? Any comments on the newer version?

No comments on the newer one, but I, too, fell in love with JP Sublime the first time I sniffed it years ago. Like Songes, I didn’t expect to like it, much less love, much less adore it, but I do. Fortunately I did get a bottle (or two) and though I wear it sparingly, it truly is ‘sublime!’ It’s my scent of choice on the few annual occasions I attend a charity function/benefit at our local country club (am not a member, could never be, a member). Sublime says elegance, class, wealth, old money, and pure gold to me!

Years ago when I lived in Pittsburgh I knew a woman who wore Sublime as her signature scent. It was about the time it was very hard to find and she was in a panic. I always told her how good she smelled and then I could always smell it on her!

I wore Sublime when it was first released and adored it. I don’t care for the current formulation unfortunately.

Although I love L’Ambre, I can’t imagine layering Sublime with anything, it’s such a rich scent, at least the one I have is (see my reply below). Do you have the edp or the edt, the old or newer version?

I was undecided about what to wear until I saw your comment. Joining you in Sarrasins which I adore. As an aside, I don’t really understand the concept of a “dirty” perfume. There are smells I like and smells I don’t, but the interpretation is in the mind of the person doing the smelling, isn’t it?

I’m with stinker_kit on this being a rose-y day – went with Chanel No. 19 EDP, layered with a bit of Diptyque Eau Rose sprayed on the abdomen to amp the rose note in 19. Heaven!

I think any simple rose soliflore (or close to soli) would do! I like to wear No. 19 over that TBS Moroccan Rose body butter, myself. Sadly, I’ve only got a little bit of the body butter left and I’ll have to find something else to pull the rose out of 19 when it’s gone.

I love Parisienne too! But my absolute favorite is YSL Paris. I was in art school when it first came out in 83 or 84. One of the new teachers was wearing it and I remember smelling the trail of it as she walked down the hall. I never identified the rose notes at the time, it seemed very exotic, hip and modern to me. I bought a mini of it a few years back, but there was an element missing from what it used to be.

Today I am doing a massive de-cluttering of my things. I’m using the KonMari method of tidying which involves discarding things in a specific order. It is shocking how much S**T I have! I will probably have some things for the freebie meet.

Well today I dealt with clothes, shoes, bags and accessories. The method involved putting everything (even the stored stuff in the attic and basement) from the “clothing” category in one big pile and then sorting/discarding in a specific order. The criteria for keeping something is to hold it in your hands and feel if it sparks joy. If not, into the recycling/donation bag it goes. At first it was really hard – sounds weird, but after awhile I could really feel if an item was “tired” or really wanted to be let go of. The most difficult thing was an old woolen shawl from India that I have been using for warmth/meditation/cat blankey for years. The thing was disgusting, but I was sooooo attached to it. I spent a few minutes just thanking it and then in the bag it went! What a relief.

I’m always pleased to see another YSL Paris fan. It’s such a wonderful and memorable fragrance. She isn’t what she used to be these days, but the current EDP is closer to the “real” Paris than the EDT.
I so need to declutter as well. Not something I’m good at. Much more talented at cluttering.

SOTD is Jo Malone Oud and Bergamot Dry Oil Spray.

I bought a 100ml bottle last summer and used almost the entire bottle! There is about an eighth left and I have neglected this over the cooler months in favor of my rarely worn, heavier scents.

Still smells “mostly” good but I have a feeling the oil has turned just a bit. I am thinking of a repurchase because I used the heck out of this and loved how soft it made my skin, but when I look online I see the price has gone up 10 large ones! Ugh!

But, today is my birthday (the BIG 50!) so I may just splurge!

Robin, I started doing it on Mondays because, as much as possible, I like Mondays as quiet wind-down-from-the-weekend, introspective days with a ‘ simple’ scent to match. I think others have just chosen whichever day they need for a ‘simple’ scent for whatever it means to them. There’s no communal KISS day, it’s as the spirit moves you.

Couldn’t decide on what to wear, so put on something from an old bottle I haven’t worn in ages – Burberry for Women (the oldest one, I think). It was a friend’s signature scent and it reminds me of a very specific time, right when I moved to San Diego and lived with this friend. It smells off today – I’m wondering if it turned or my nose is just different. I bought it years ago, before I was into perfume, so either is possible!

Perhaps it’s just off. I, too, love that one, am on my second bottle (a rarity for me) and have one in reserve. Perhaps weather plays a role, too? I like to wear mine in the late summer/early fall, when the weather cools here but is not yet cold.

Not a fan of Parisienne, that initial vinyl note was a real turnoff for me (and wouldn’t leave my nose!).

Hey, baby, it’s cold outside! Arctic temps today and tomorrow – highs only in the teens – with subzero temps tonight. Brrr! My scent needs today conflict: something warm and comforting to ward off the chill yet keep my dreams of warm weather alive. My choice is Givenchy’s original Hot Couture edp (I think it’s now called Hot Couture Collection No. 1; the reformulated versions/flankers don’t hold a candle to the original IMHO in terms of depth, complexity, and smoothness). The woody, peppery and gourmand notes satisfy my winter needs and the creamy magnolia and aromatic vetiver that linger to the drydown keep my warm-weather dreams alive. Although I’m not much of a white-floral fan, magnolias are a springtime scent favorite for me.
