Thursday scent of the day 2/19

Posted by Robin on 19 February 2015 160 Comments

Chinese New Year stamp, Canada, detail

Happy Lunar New Year! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm in Aedes Bengale Oeillet.

Reminder: tomorrow will be One Hit Wonder Friday: wear something that is the only fragrance you really like by the brand, with partial credit for a fragrance that is the only one made by the brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Angeliques sous la pluie ( Malle). One of the sleepers in my collection, although I realise that I made the right decision in purchasing this years ago. It is utterly gorgeous.

As I was leaving work yesterday, I noticed an incredible smell. It was the sleeves of my coat – Theorema from last week. So, I put some on last night and again this morning. Perfectly delicious and cozy for a cold day.

Also – Oeillet Bengale sounds fantastic – spicy rose incense??? I need to try that ๐Ÿ™‚

I thought I’d love Theorema (Cardamom! Carnation! Sandalwood!), but after a while, my throat feels scratchy. This has also happened with Black Cashmere and Aromatics Elixir. Any ideas on what’s going on?

I have troubles with the chocolate accord in Theorema and also Coromandel (and now I’m finding also Prada Ambre). I like the way both of them smell, but I don’t enjoy wearing them – it almost makes me feel like I’m wearing a tight turtleneck? Something clausterphobic about that. I can’t say about Aromatics Exilir since I don’t get much musk or chocolate out of it. Of course, it could be the type of patchouli they all use. Do you have troubles with patchouli? I’d go to fragrantica and look at the notes tree to see what’s the same with them all. If that doesn’t help, then I’d read the ingredients list on the box and see if there is something common between them.

Hmm, maybe it’s patchouli, but I happily wear Jungle L’Elephant with no issues. Maybe it’s the patch formulation?

I would imagine there are more than one kinds of patch chems or patch accord combos. It may be that for sure.

          • mals86 says:
            19 February 2015 at 2:41 pm

Could be that- I’m very leery of certain types of patchouli myself. I can’t take Aromatics Elixir, either, but that’s because there’s a very strong urine note to it if you ask me, and not so much the patchouli bothering me. I had a small bottle of Theorema which I sort of liked but never wore – probably the “chocolate” stuff in the base.

Black Cashmere, though, I do really love. And Organza Indecence is full of the kind of dusty patchouli that usually troubles me intensely, but somehow I can both recognize it and not be bothered by it. I’ve reached a point of “ehh, who knows?” with the conundrum.

Though it satisfied my “craving”, I think Cinnabar is a little sharp and awkward against the mossy/floral-ness.

I always want to enjoy Knowing b/c it is so wonderful, exacting. But it’s one of the very few frags I have negative experience with, so it always reminds me of my ex-mother in law (who gave me a bottle a looooong time ago. Since this was the early 90s, I should really try and get over it already. But every time I smell it, I get transported into her house. Ugh. Good for you though – it’s a stunner!

I’m in PdN Maharanih Intense. Second and last time sampling it. I’m officially shutting the door on this one. It’s a Sunny-D, patchouli, crotch fest on me. If you like MKK and Orange Sanguine (separately or combined, I guess), give this one a shot.

Also, big Nicolai sale at Osswalds NYC (online for sure, but looks like in-store too)

Aww, too bad! I love my full bottle. I get tea, spices, and yes, something akin to lower anatomy. I find it wonderful, though, and it fuels my imaginative narratives every time I wear it. This may be the least resource-intensive way to enjoy this specific pleasure.

Joining you in carnations this morning, Robin – SOTD is Caron Bellodgia layered with Cuir Mauresque. It’s a very nice pairing, but I might prefer CM layered with Rose Anonyme … and I might prefer Bellodgia on its own. More experimentation required!

I got good things and bad news yesterday.
Good: Got my bottle of La Panthere in the mail, so that’s what I’m wearing today. Love it.
Bad: I checked my phone during dinner out with friends last night and saw a text from my landlord that we have no running water now due to a burst water pipe. *sigh* it was bound to happen sooner or later due to all this ridiculously cold weather. Luckily there was a grocery store in the plaza with the restaurant so the fiance and I grabbed jugs of water to take home with us.

At work with dirty hair that’s driving me nuts and feeling scungy, but at least I smell good.

If you are in the states, I recommend getting some Pantene Dry Shampoo. We went through some difficult plumbing issues this past summer/fall and Alba Botanica Hawaiian 3 in 1 wipes and the dry shampoo saved my sanity several times.

Bumble & Bumble’s Tonic spray is a great alternative to dry shampoo. It’s a wet spray which breaks down oil and product buildup to refresh the hair.

Hey, there is nothing more life-fulfilling than washing your hair in ice cold water! Ha. Done that myself. I am always afraid the heat will go or the pipes will burst.

I’ve also got the big soup pot out to make some warm/simmering water to wash my hair. But you need some help. Very “Out of Africa” you know? Just imagine Robert Redford is washing your hair and you’ll forget all about those pipes!

If you like citrus and a tinge of booze I like Diptyques Eau Duelle! And if you like yummy, warm vanillas that aren’t gourmandy, Black Flower Mexican Vanilla is good as well! Un Bois Vanille registers as creme brulee for me, if that counts as yummy (but I just don’t like it as much).

Black Flower Mexican Vanilla is made by Dame Perfumery, an indie perfume house in Arizona. Lots of things to recommend it – reasonable price points, friendly people, and the customer service is lovely. The vanilla perfume is quite nice. If you send them a postcard, they’ll send you a free sample of your choice.

Oh, gosh, NO! ๐Ÿ™‚ I wore BdA yesterday and was just so impressed and happy with it. I think it is my fav “vanilla/amber”. It’s so dry and yet so warm and elegant. At this time, my overall winners in the vanilla category are vintage Shalimar, BdA, Organza Indecence, Ambra del Nepal, and then Eau Duelle. You can see it’s the ligthest of the bunch, and mostly something I wear in the summer. I suppose I tip more towards the vanilla amber. It is unusual to find a sheerish vanilla that doesn’t turn into cake at one point or another.

Eau Duelle edt is so sheer to me, so I don’t really think about it in the same way I think about BdA. I almost think of Eau Duelle as a vanilla “cologne”, esp that edt version b/c it hangs on to that limey gin and tonic accord for a long while for me.

I’ve been wearing a lot of Vanilla Insensรฉe lately, and I even tucked a bar of the soap in my pajama drawer, so it wafts me to sleep at night too.

And Un Bois Vanille from Serge Lutens is my other favorite. It’s starts off with a big coconut punch and then settles onto a woodsy vanilla skin scent. I would say for sillage though, Vanilla Insensรฉe wins.

I’m sporting Rien today, mostly because we have filthy yard work to do and I’m wearing yesterday’s grimy clothes. We did vehicle maintanence yesterday and my arms still smelled like engine oil this morning so I figured Rien would compliment eau de garage nicely.
In case anybody’s wondering, the little stray kitty is much enjoying her confinement in the garage apartment and allowing her pain meds to be dispensed without a fight. The two things I was worried about seem to be no problem so far. In fact, she’s the most cooperative cat I’ve ever medicated with nothing beyond a brief reproachful look and right back to purring and trying to kiss my face and climb on my shoulder. I can’t believe someone dumped her ๐Ÿ™

Ugh, animal dumpers are the worst. ๐Ÿ™ I’ve actually got a dumped kitty coming to my house for the weekend – my brother-in-law and his wife are rescuing it from the frigid temperatures (but they’re going out of town for the weekend) and she too apparently has the sweetest temperament in the world. I’ll be keeping her in the guest room, but we’ll see how my other 3 kitties feel about her… ๐Ÿ™‚ There could be madness in the house tonight!

Good luck with that. I recommend a good ole Guerlain, vintage if you’ve got it, and a cocktail. Nothing like a jealous feline or two to liven up an evening.
Bat is not thrilled that Titania (she officially has a name) seems to have decided to keep us. He keeps refusing to let me touch him if I’ve been petting her and we caught him threatening her through the window earlier. She’s going to clean his clock one day and he’ll be sorry. At least she will be living at my Mom’s so he won’t have to share his real house with her.

Been offline a few days so missed your dumped kitty story… so glad it is working out!

Funny story about an abandoned kitty–When my husband was teaching at Bowdoin many many moons ago, one freezing winter day we noticed a cat wandering around in the snow. My husband stood on on the porch and called for the kitty. Being from the UK, he called out “Puss, puss, here puss puss… Come here puss, puss,” for nearly quarter of an hour. Fed up finally with the slightly inappropriate (in America) moniker “puss, puss,” I told him to clear out and let me try. I went out on the porch and called out, “here kitty, kitty. Come here kit–” before I could finish my words, a dirty pile of fur had raced up the stairs and was mewing to get in. The kitty spent a few nights with us and then didn’t come back one day. I hope it got a good warm home. That was a KITTY, not a Puss Puss.

I am wearing Lalique White which a lovely spicy, citrusy, wood that sits somewhere between the original Omnia (not as musky) and Declaration (no cumin), but with its own special tartness (from the tamarind, I guess).

Hypnotic Poison is by Annick Menardo, one of my favorite perfumers. I only had a small sample, but enjoyed it. Do you like her other works? Bvlgari Black was one of my first forays across the men’s/women’s fragrance counter divide. I also like her quieter scents, Doir’s Bois D’Argent (milk, honey & money!) and Le Labo’s Gaiac 10. You smell great ๐Ÿ˜€

Bois D’Argent and Hypnotic Poison have an almond quality that is similar, and I think I would suspect from first sniff they were Menardo creations. They are very different. It’s been a while, but HP has more sweet floral/fruit quality. BdA is more dry, but I’d also say more linear. BdA has been on my should I buy this list for years. I really love it, crave it sometimes, but it comes in that ginormous CD bottle. I’d be curious to hear what you think, Rappleyea.

SOTD is Dior J’adore L’absolu. 2nd or 3rd trial… pondering whether this would make a good ‘everyday’ scent. Pondering if I even want a good ‘everyday’ scent… shouldn’t I just wear something wonderful every day? Why save the best stuff for not-every-day?

I do the same thing about everyday frags. And then I think, what? Everyday. Am I insane? I wish I lived in a world where Memoir Woman was my everyday frag. Something like J’adore would be like 60th in line to get my attention (eg, never worn). I ususally keep a few light frag samples around for when I have meetings or family visits.

My issue with ‘everyday’ is that if I buy it, I’ll wear it quite a bit, saving the ‘best stuff’ for special occasions. Which don’t happen all that often, so then the ‘best stuff’ just sits there unused most of the time. How dumb is that. I do the same thing with wines and jewelry. Bah! Life is short! Time to banish the idea of saving-it-for-special-occasions ๐Ÿ™‚

SOTD is AG Heure Exquise edt. Ah. I wanted that spicy sandalwood for warmth and those greens and iris for dreams of spring. I should wear this more than I go. It is one of my HG and was my gateway galbanum scent. I’m glad to see that HE made the cut for the, em, revised AG line, but I also wonder if it’s been reformulated. Probably, right. So sad about all that IFRA nonsense. You know, art supplies have that ASTM warning label on them. Cigs and alcohol have warning labels. What the heck. Can’t make a warning label for a bottle of fragrance? I can smear Cadmium Red paint all over my arms and face while I’m (trying to) smoke unfiltered Marlboros, (actually a non-smoker), and doing shots of Everclear, and that’s my problem. They aren’t getting rid of art supplies, or cigs, or booze! Why oh why is IFRA so Darth Vader about the whole thing? Ok, I know, its the chem companies and profits, blah blah…. Sorry about my rant. But every once in a while I need to vent about this nonsense!

I know, silent tears. I was so happy to see that she kept most of the line. I respect the artistry of AG as a house so much. But at the same time, it’s like Eau de Monsieur 2.0, right? It’s sad, sad, sad they can’t have their full palette. I was kind of insane a few years ago and began hunting down and hording AG’s – even ones I was lukewarm about. I felt guilty about it, but now I’m glad. I have enough of the Heure Exquise to last for years.

I have one of those lumpy older bottles from the blue box, and I get Ok sillage – not massive, but not missing either. Do you have the current? Older bottles are still relatively easy to come by for not too much money. I don’t know about the extrait though…

Not sure just how old mine is, since it’s a dabber sample I got back in 2012 or so. But it’s probably from the same era of warty bottles w/ gold caps that I think you have. Maybe spraying vs. dabbing makes a difference…
