Monday scent of the day 1/12

Posted by Robin on 12 January 2015 184 Comments

marni-scarf

With apologies, it's Monday yet again! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Marni Rose.

Reminder: this Friday, 1/16, wear a fragrance from Prada or perfumer Daniela Andrier.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Marni Pink Windowpane Print Scarf, sold out, via Lyst.

I’m wearing Caron Eau de Reglisse, which I’m finding to be a deliciously lemony licorice fougere.

I don’t own any Prada fragrances and the only Andrier I’ve got is Marni — so I guess that’s what I’ll go for on Friday!

Ah, sadly I can’t do anise. I just swapped for a bottle of Havana Vanille/Vanille Absolument and I’m going to have to swap it away because I get a heavy anise/black licorice vibe from it, and strangely no booze!

OH MY GOD you have to try Amarelli Licorice toothpaste by Marvis. A touch of mint, a ton of licorice, SO SO GOOD. They also have jasmine, cinnamon, ginger, and a few other things. If they did rose that’s all I’d ever use.

Hi, Hajusuuri! No, I’ve been hesitant to try Cuir Beluga–immortelle is one of the notes I avoid, and combined with the heliotrope I was afraid it would smell like syrupy fluffy powder. What is your experience with it?

I’m trying to work my way through a bag of Caron samples that I’ve had for YEARS and blindly tried Montaigne today, of unknown vintage. My first thought was that it smells like a subdued late-eighties thing, and I was shocked when Fragrantica said it was launched in 2007 — good job at recreating an era, I thought, and very brave to do such an eighties scent so recently. But as it turns out, it was actually first launched in 1986, which explains everything. It’s really good, orangey aldehydes then jasmine and mimosa over an oriental base, surprisingly un-heavy considering its provenance, nothing I’d own but very nice.

I can’t remember it, sadly — was it one of the urn scents? Wish somebody would buy Caron already and restore the brand.

Pretty sure it isn’t one of the urn scents, but it was originally launched as a boutique exclusive, so maybe it never really made it into wider circulation.

Those urns bother me. I was in Fortnum & Mason in London a few years back and when I saw that massive, awe-inspiring display of crystal urns, all I could think was, those perfumes are being exposed to light twelve hours a day, year-round. That can’t possibly be good for them.

Yeah, that’s a genius idea, and I’d like to see more of it. I would be more comfortable with something like those Mugler refilling stations, though — those containers are opaque so they protect the contents better, and they’re not gorgeously baroque like the urns but still attractive and very futuristic looking.

          • Robin says:
            12 January 2015 at 3:47 pm

I don’t know why TM hasn’t adopted the same methods instead of just using them as refill stations, though, where you pick your bottle first then they fill it. I bet they’d sell more LE bottles that way.

Not sure what I’ll do on Friday – the only Prada scent I have is Infusion d’Iris. (Which my daughter finds it amusing to call “Infection of Iris.” And she *likes* it. In fact, it’s one of the four fragrances she deigns to actually wear on occasion.) Anyway, I don’t think I’ll enjoy it in this weather. I’d wear Candy, but I don’t have any of that; I keep checking eBay for a mini but haven’t located one at a reasonable price yet.

Today? Le Galion Tubereuse, to continue my BWF January.

Actually I am quite happy to have a perfectly ordinary Monday today. The new year kickstarted in several ways, but today I am free, going through the priorities at my to-do-list and de-Christmasing the house.

A friend spent Christmas in London and brought me 3 Atkinsons samples for a New Year’s gift. Today I am wearing Oud Save The Queen. It is a funny beast (and a terrible pun), starting off as a mix of burnt rubber and burnt suger with a blast of oud, slightly sour. Eventually it settles into a quite beautiful incense.

Good morning, everybody! I started giving Serge Lutens samples a test drive over the weekend! I decided to start with florals. A La Nuit was very pretty, but I don’t think I need that much jasmine all at once. Datura Noir was fun in a trashy, tropical sort of way.

Fleurs d’Oranger is the first one that seems like a total winner for me! I was afraid of the cumin, but it turns out that I didn’t need to be. Fleurs d’Oranger is a major mood lifter – I can’t help but smile when I smell it. 🙂 It’s a nice antidote for an icy, rainy Monday.

Fleurs d’Oranger is probably my favorite Serge, and the first niche full bottle I ever bought. I also wear it a lot in the summer – and not even sparingly!

FWIW, you can get it at Fragrancenet for under $70. >: )

My struggle with Mr Lutens’ creations is well documented on this site! The only ones I really love are Gris Clair and Encens et Lavande. I like Borneo too. There is just a note that he likes that reads as sweat on my skin and not nice, healthy sweat.

Hmm, let me see if I can remember. FdC is less skanky. The neroli is slightly soapy, pulling the scent closer to your skin. I think there is a nice amber note in it as well. As we say around here “your mileage may vary”. And what I’m saying, too, is sample FdC before you buy a FB of FdO 🙂

            Right. You should sample.

That said, I know that the newer bottles of Fd’O are reportedly de-cuminized, and the sample I received a couple of years ago was downright friendly with no skank at all.

(Also? FdC was really awful on me. It went Lemon Pledge/toilet cleanser/laundry musk, and I don’t want it on my skin ever again. As Suzy Q says, YMMV.)

Have you had a chance to try the roses yet? Sa Majesté la Rose is big and showoffy in the best way, and La Fille de Berlin is gorgeously spicy and fresh: I’m not as big a fan of Rose de Nuit but lots of people love it. Serge really knows what to do with a rose.

PdN Maharanih Intense, which is fascinating and definitely worth sampling if you haven’t done so. It starts of really bright and then goes raunchy. I’m not a fan of the intense orange top notes – it was like Tang (though for what it’s worth, I also dislike Atelier Cologne’s popular Orange Sanguine, so if you like that orange blast, this might be appealing). The mid and base notes are pretty good, if still a little too orangey for my liking. I don’t get much cinnamon or carnation (if we’re going by the Fragrantica notes list), but rather, the orange, cinnamon, and civet is combining into a cuminy note (I love cumin in my fragrances), definitely a bit of crotch.

Ultimately, I don’t think it’s for me, but I look forward to sampling it again before retiring it.

I rather liked Maharanih, until late in the drydown when I started getting these whiffs of sweaty boxers. Actually called my husband over to check the authenticity… spot on.

I’m wearing Donna Karan Gold today. This one is a cheap thrill that I’m really enjoying. I bought it unsniffed on the strength of the nst and bdj reviews. I paid what I would pay for a mini for a full ounce of the edp. I am expecting a mini of Marni on Wednesday, so that is going to be my choice for Friday.

SL De Profundis for me today. It’s grey and dreary and threatening rain. Call me crazy, but this scent seems very centering and calming, just humming along like a continuous “Om” chant. I don’t get the “funeral” vibe that so many others seem to experience. Very meditive and soothing, which is key for a Monday 😉

Keiko Mecheri Myrrhe et Merveilles – my nose seems to translate this into aldehydes although I do not see them listed in Fragrantica or elsewhere. This gets rarely mentioned anywhere, but it is nice enough on a cold day, though.

As far as I remember, the ones I have sampled from Keiko Mecheri (including Myrrhe et Merveiles) were very well crafted, very beautiful but also very demure, almost withdrawn. They are exquisite but not really “me”.

Mitzah by Dior on one arm and Paul and Joe’s Bleu on the other.

My 3.4 oz of Natori arrived. My progression with this one is hilarious – a mini purchased blind in early December, a 1.7 oz ordered a week before Christmas, and a 3.4 oz ordered last week once I learned that it was discontinued. Love came quick :). I’ll probably end up acquiring more too, at the rate I’m wearing it…

I am currently sniffing at this one because the Marni faded and thinking I might need a bottle myself! I bought Atelier Cologne’s Vetiver Fatale for the plum note but it tends to fade and leave a very unisex scent, whereas this is way more feminine. Aka, I like both but this is waaay different enough to justify another bottle 😉 I like the plum and rose together a lot.

And yes to the bottle! 🙂

SOTD is a carry over from last night’s spray, which is the original Marni. It was faded but deserved a re-application – love this stuff. I’ve never seen Marni Rose anywhere to try it out, but from the review I’m guessing the original would still be my favourite. The great thing about perfume is how often you’re surprised, though! Has anyone seen it in Canada? I bought the original at a Sephora but my new Sephora doesn’t even carry that one. Alas!

I like Marni Rose best layered with Marni — they’re really nice together. They’re not all that easy to find here either, very minimal distribution.

Thanks for the info, Robin! It’s too bad it’s not widely distributed – I was very happy when I stumbled on Marnie at my old Sephora location because I thought all the stores carried the same stock. Nope. But it really got my hopes up seeing something that was a little dirty and spicy in a mainstream store! I mean, I know it doesn’t come close to niche brands, but for something in the suburbs, it was a miracle! 🙂

Marni is one of my favorites. I bought it at Saks almost a year ago, and enjoy wearing it a lot. This past September I went to Saks, and the sales associate there said Marni did not sell well and they pulled it off the shelves there. I am glad I bought it when I did.

That’s a shame, but glad we both bought while we could! I do kind of wish I’d gotten the biggest bottle but things were getting pricey at that point. I wonder if the bottle came into play with casual browsers – maybe polka dots attracted people looking for a sweeter scent, say? So hard to say, I would be terrible at marketing 🙂

    Horrible, horrible Monday.
I was mugged when getting in my car to go to work is morning. I screamed and the guy tried choking me to shut me up and grabbed my handbag and ran. 3 hours at the police station this morning and a very upset fiancé taking care of me now. At home with tea curled in blankets on the sofa and a tender neck from where I was grabbed. Phone locked and id, cards taken care of. I’m lucky the situation wasn’t worse, but I’m still seething with anger and will be for a while.
    Wearing 10 Cormo Coso today.

Wearing Iris Poudre today. It’s just so pretty.. it’s one aldehydic fragrance that works for me. I hadn’t worn it in chilly weather, so I decided to see how it would do today. The weather really brings out the aldehydes. Not bad, but it made it a little “starchier” than normal.

Not sure what I’m going to do for Friday. I don’t have any Prada, and I’m not sure I have any of the other stuff on Daniela Andrier’s page. I might have a sample of Marni lurking about.. need to check my sample box.

I actually like aldehydes in winter… especially when it’s dry and cold. Something about that makes them sparkle rather than going powdery and dull.

And love Iris Poudre anyway. My year’s budget bottle just showed up at the post office this morning, yay!! Now I can spritz generously.

Monday’s Keep-It-Simple scent is Caswell Massey’s Pure Frost: Bergamot opens up bright and fresh, then the scent softens with just a touch of Casablanca Lily and Indian Jasmine (just a kiss!) as it mellows to soft vanilla. Pure Frost was a LE from 2012 that I discovered via the lovely soap and bath products, then when the edt was clearanced out I bought one, fell in love with it as a winter skin scent, and bought a couple more as it was clearanced further. I notice today it’s again on their website for a mere $8.99 a bottle. It’s fresh and clean yet somehow soothing and comforting, just as the world is outside my window today: last night’s newly-fallen snow blankets the ground and sparkles and glistens in the bright sunshine under a clear blue sky.

It always perturbed me that CM never offered samples. I have and really like their Elixir of Love #1, so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt with their other offerings. I used to have their honeysuckle edt too. They’ve been putting out some new things the past few years, but unless you can get to the shop, it’s hard to sniff. One of these days I want to order some of the sandalwood talc to smell how it stacks up.

Monday’s SOTD was OJ Frangipani from a small decant I ordered to try it out for the summer. Unfortunately, although I like it, it doesn’t seem to have a lot of presence on me. It does compare favourably to my trees, however.

I switched to Champaca once Frangipani wore off.

This morning I am enjoying a few pre-shower sprays of Chanel 19 Poudre while I sip me tea and listen to the (subtropical) rain. It’s the last week of my holidays and I am determined to enjoy them! Not sure what I will go for when I get properly up and moving.

Oh, and I am activating a NY resolution to get more involved in the community side of this perfume hobby by posting for the first time!

Thanks! I am in Australia and I’m still a little unsure how to approach the time difference she posting about SOTD and the community projects. What do others do?

Good question! People do pop in and out from all over the place, so you’re in good company. Hopefully a fellow Aussie will chime in …

          Hi
          Fellow Aussie here
I tend to do the Friday projects on a Friday, not sure why but Friday seems a good day for it and then read the thread and comment on Saturday morning but SOTD I tend to write what I am wearing when I read the comments so today’s its Tuesday’s fragrance!
A bit confusing but it works for me so far (even though I have reading for ages and only just started joining in a few weeks ago!

Saturday morning is a good time for reading blogs (and posting!) plus that way you know how the Friday project ‘turned out’ I suppose.

But yes, it does seem to make more sense to post your scent of the moment (as opposed to the previous day!). Perhaps I shall do that too.

Hello! I’m late to the party, but today I am wearing Eau D’Italie’s Paestum Rose. It’s very earthy on my skin and very “thick,” almost chewy. I’m a fan. 😀

Very lively deep rose! I don’t wear my decant enough.

Penhaligon’s Iris Prima. I’m really enjoying the soft, muted hints of sparkle and warmth. This is my second sampling, and I spent hours during the first go-round trying to get the scent of the ballet. Either I’m a sucker, or it’s there!

This morning I tried my sample of Fleurs d’Oranger one more time, but the cumin still gets me. Then I went to bloomies and tried a couple sprays of Acqua di Parma Gelsomino Nobile, which was really pleasant but is already gone. I’m now debating what to wear tonight… perhaps I’ll try the sample I got of Narciso?

Tuberouse criminelle which I love but for some reason it’s just not working today. I think I should have gone for something more laid back for my slobbing around home day!
