Monday scent of the day 2/16

Posted by Robin on 16 February 2015 159 Comments

Vintage postcard: navel oranges

Can you believe it's Monday again? Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing.

Purely by accident (I'm a little tired) I am wearing Fendi Theorema and Parfum d'Empire Azemour Les Orangers layered. It's not half bad!

Reminder: 2/20 will be One Hit Wonder Friday: wear something that is the only fragrance you really like by the brand, with partial credit for a fragrance that is the only one made by the brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s sleeting outside and I don’t have to leave the house! I’m wafting a warm cloud of Chanel Bois des Isles. Now that you mention it, Robin, Theorema would have been a good choice. I don’t think I’ll try layering it with BdI though ;)

BdI is perfect for miserable weather! It always makes me feel very luxurious, more than any other fragrance I own.

Ugh. I have not left the house since Friday (!) but have to go out this afternoon. Hope we don’t get sleet. It is warming up though…we’re supposed to get a high of 19.

Nicolai Vanilla Insensee from my sample stash project.

Eh. Pretty sums this one up, at least for me.

Hope everyone had a fab valentines! Mine was a historic day in which I acurately diagnosed, treated, and cured my leaky toilet- all for under ten bucks!

It’s hard to beat a Valentine’s day like that! ;)

And the cherry on top is the fact that I schlepped into my local Ace Hardware, asked the guy “Where can I find a thingamajig for my toilet?” and he KNEW! He led me to the part I needed based on that very vague description.

Too bad he was only about 19 or I would have put some moves on him because he KNEW EXACTLY what I needed ;)

I was bumming – I finally made it to an actually department store (Macy’s) last week, but they didn’t have the Aromatics in White tester. But I did get to test the original Aromatics after so many years that I can’t count. I’ve decided it’s not as bad as I remember when I was about 20. No surprise there.

What does Aromatics in White smell like?

I’ve yet to discover the answer to this “What would Shackleton wear?” scenario. I’m wearing Bottega Veneta Eau Legere right now b/c I’m doing some research on oakmoss accords. Cheers to everyone, and my best wishes to those up coast who are struggling with more snow than anyone deserves.

“What would Shackleton wear?” Hee, hee! The following decription of him from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton#Merchant_Navy_officer) sounds like the backstory for a niche perfume:

“He was, as a shipmate recorded, “a departure from our usual type of young officer”, content with his own company though not aloof, “spouting lines from Keats [and] Browning”, a mixture of sensitivity and aggression but, withal, sympathetic.”

I’m wearing Pd’E Osmanthus Interdite on one wrist and The Different Company Osmanthus on the other. Osmanthus Interdite always smells bitter to me at first, like tea that’s been steeped too long, but I love the drydown.

I recently got these two plus a few others to explore osmanthus – yay!
I plan to hold off wearing until it warms up a bit as they do seem like good Spring scents. But, on a quick try via a couple dabs I really liked PdE’s Osmanthus Interdite, and agree on the drydown -gorgeous.

I know everyone else is sick of winter, but I’m hoping for a solid snow storm tonight. I want it to close down my workplace and I want it to close down schools and universities. We haven’t had a really satisfying snow this year and I would rather have snow and get to stay home than trudge out to work in vaguely scary but half-hearted ice.

I’m wearing Songes, which I guess is quite tropical, but it’s so plush and creamy that it works very well in the cold!

I may be the only person anywhere near the East Coast who isn’t sick of winter, but that may be because we haven’t had snow before today. We’ve had dustings, enough to make roads slick, but not enough that the kids could go out and play in. Looks like we might get that today! I’m excited.

I’m sympathetic to both sides. When I lived in Minnesota, I remember Jones’ing for a really good, clean snow. I also remember trudging through another cold March, desperate for the winter’s end!

This has been an odd, warm winter in the West this year, though. We haven’t hardly had proper winter storms. Makes me worried about looming water shortages for the summer. . . I would welcome some snow pack to ease my mind!

I don’t mind a snowy winter, but this brutal cold is making me wish for spring a lot earlier than normal. I’d like to get a proper snowfall too. We’ve had two storms predicted, but both ended up being non-events. Maybe we’ll get something a little more substantial tonight.

Minteacup – nothing is worse than ice. At least snow is romantic, maybe a little fun (apologies to friends in Boston!). But no one likes ice. Misery. My miseries here are the extreme high winds that just grate on the nerves after hours and hours of howling. I’m ready for spring.

I have just a touch of yesterdays Oriza Reve d’Ossian left on my wrist and haven’t applied anything new yet because I’ve yet to shower… Despite the fact that I haven’t showered, it feels like today has been the longest day ever! We realized that the pipes leading to our downstairs bathroom have frozen, so we’re doing our best to heat them up and prevent a burst (our pipes burst last winter and flooded our cellar). Let’s hope it works, because thats a lotta bucks we don’t need to spend on clean up / fixing!

This gives me hope… No. 22 is sugary on me, or at least the pre-LE version is. The LE version is less so (that incense!) but I still don’t love it. Should try again, as I like aldehydes and generally get on with Chanels.

I plan on using my President’s Day holiday to do some chores that have been neglected for too long. Also, I’m slowly getting the house ready to incorporate Mr. Spicebomb’s possessions into mine. So, I’m organizing, weeding out, tucking away, etc., etc. I want my home to feel like shared space, so I’m trying to give away and sell enough that his things clearly have room to mix with mine. Fun, but such hard work!

Funny comment along those lines by Mr. S this last Halloween, actually! He said that years back, he’d get holiday greetings with pictures of cute, attractive people getting dressed up as “sexy nurse” or “sexy cat” or Dracula with his “sexy Vampress” on his arm, etc. Now, all he gets are pictures of his friends’ children as pumpkins and such!

Agreed. I need to pace myself on how much FB stuff in take in. On the one hand I do enjoy seeing friends and family with good things happening for them, on the other hand it sometimes seems a bit much and self-absorbed..
Not that I any less self-absorbed, but I prefer to not announce it to the world on a daily basis! :)

Hahaha yes it’s quite a shift isn’t it? The analogy that has been coming to mind for me is the one about boiling a frog. I feel very much like, “Wait when did I sign up for a website devoted to photos of weddings and babies?” But then, I’m guessing there’s a much larger number of people who regard this transformation as a positive development!

Anyway, it just means we’re all getting old. A teacher friend of mine recently overheard in her high school classroom: “Y’all, Facebook is for ‘late 20s til you’re dead.’ ” Hahaha.

We’re looking at Spring Break (late March) being the official transition, but he’s talking about beginning to move things over in pieces any time now. He’s NOT excited to move all his stuff, and I’m completely sympathetic. We only just moved him from one apartment to another about a year ago, and a year before that, he’d moved when he sold his house. So, this will be move #3 in as many years. Hopefully, we can make my little house comfortable enough that he can settle in for a while. :)

Oof I am so sympathetic: there was a span in which I moved six times in eight years. (And before that college, where I moved TWICE every year.) Very happy that you guys at least have a happy reason for this move; I hope it leavens the stress!

Boss decided to give us off for the holiday and if we get the snow predicted (for a change) we might be wfh tomorrow. *fingers crossed*

After throwing out my back in an attempt to be productive – cleaning the bathroom – I’ve given up and am ready to curl up on the sofa now and read. Wearing Amouage Ubar. I wasn’t too keen on this one the first time I wore it, but for some reason I *get* it today and it’s beautiful.

I needed something layered, lush, and warm for this frigid (and now snowy) day, so I’m in Santal de Mysore. I’m almost done with my little spray vial that a generous NSTer gave me in a swap last year. This morning I just started hunting for it online, thinking maybe it would be good for the upcoming split meet. Yeah, I didn’t realize this is only available in the bell jar. Too steep for me at this point in my life.

So double thanks to my swap partner (Was it CH, hajusuuri? I’m sorry I’ve forgotten now – but know that it’s been loved!!)

I shouldn’t even tell you this but The Perfume Shoppe has the 50-mL spray of Santal de Mysore, so you know it’s at least a few years old and not some recent reformulation. If I could justify spending $200 on it I would already own it: maybe you want to?

I’m seeing the Lord & Taylor has it, Bergdorf’s, etc. And I *think* people have found it to be the same as the original but I have not smelled the new one so I can’t say for sure. Perhaps worth hunting around in blog comments, etc. to confirm this impression!

      Here’s one write-up of the re-release: http://thecandyperfumeboy.com/2013/09/16/skin-touching-skin-narciso-rodriguez-musc-for-her-perfume-oil-review-giveaway/

And then one of the original, but some commenters at the bottom of the thread mention the new one: http://boisdejasmin.com/2012/03/narciso-rodriguez-musc-for-her-oil-long-lost-favorite.html

Decided to dig into the sample box this morning, and I grabbed Ineke Poet’s Jasmine. Quite pretty! But a bit too polite and fleeting, I think, for me. I’m not generally a jasmine girl, but maybe I need to try more. Any thoughts on one with a little more oomph but not a total indolic, jasmine BOMB?

(As an aside, I’m also sampling my dad’s record collection. Currently listening to Sesame Street’s *In Harmony*: James Taylor singing “Jelly Man Kelly” and Doobie Brothers singing “Wynken, Blynken and Nod.” Hilarious!)

I hope that you are teaching your kids the names of the wildlife in your yard :-) I thought about you today because it’s the last day of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Did you get to participate? It’s strange that we’ve done tons of other bird counts, but we haven’t done the GBBC. My husband does keep a yard list.

Fresh cream smells just like that, sweet cream, w/o being cloying and w/o that sometimes sour note that milky scents sometimes have. Yes, I suppose you could layer this nicely but I wear mine straight (but then I’m a purist when it comes to ice cream, too, a simple but rich vanilla is my favorite).

Yes, we do backyard camping and nature study as often as time and weather permits, bird and plant identification. Just today we were talking about the maple syrup festival we always go to about a month from now at a nearby nature preserve, the kids understand and have participated in the arduous task of tapping the trees for the sap and then boiling gallons of it down to get a tiny amount of real maple syrup. We plant giant sunflowers each year in late spring that grow right outside their windows; the goldfinches that feed from the gorgeous yellow blossoms in late summer are quite a spectacle to behold in the late afternoon sun.

Unfortunately, we missed the GBBC. Too many activities crowded out the weekend. But we watch all the poor frozen birds swarm to our feeders. A sweet flock of about a dozen cardinals are our daily highlight.

Oh, I’d wear it (FC) straight, too :-) A simple but rich vanilla is my favorite flavor of ice cream, too.

Well, it sounds like your kids do not suffer from Nature Deficit Disorder ;-) My mother is a retired junior high school science teacher. I am very grateful for the curiosity in and love of nature that she instilled in me as a child.

Would wearing an immortelle frag be overdoing it for a maple syrup festival? :-)

My husband and I are both government employees, so we had today off. After I put on amethyst jewelry this morning, I had purple on the brain, so I wore violet perfume — Violetta de Bosco by i Profumi di Firenze. I will definitely finish my 50 ml bottle of this stuff. It was perfect for birding/nature-watching in the spring-like weather we’re having. While we were birding, I had my husband sniff my neck. His response was an enthusiastic “That smells very good.”

    Highlights for Laila:

Butterflies and plants: We saw California pipevine swallowtail butterflies and California pipevine/Dutchman’s pipe (with “pipes”) — the only host plant of California pipevine swallowtail caterpillars. We also saw a Mourning Cloak butterfly and numerous wild cucumber vines (their springy tendrils are quite charming).

Birds: We saw and/or heard 42 species in 78 minutes. Highlights: Adult Red-shouldered Hawk screaming from its nest; Great-blue Heron carrying nesting material to its nest in a four-nest mini-rookery; Acorn Woodpecker attacking a non-native squirrel; Varied Thrushes, Western Bluebirds, Yellow-billed Magpies, and Anna’s Hummingbirds.

We have not done much birding in Pennsylvania, but we hope to someday. You guys in the eastern U.S. have awesome spring migrations!

It has been unseasonably warm here in Northern California. We’ve been having record-high temperatures. We’re in a huge drought, but I’m hoping that we got enough rain late last year to have good wildflower displays. Fingers crossed!

Finally, my husband really wanted me to share the following: If you are looking for birding hotspots in your area, ebird.org (managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology) is a good place to start. Go to ebird.org, Explore Data, and Explore a Region.

Have now made it through all my Ormande Jayne samples: today was Tiare. I put it on just before 8 am and enjoyed it for 5-6 hours. Now, the dregs of it remind me of my most-hated accord: Secret Anti-perspirant spray circa 1976. I sometimes get a whiff of that in other perfumes. I had a bunch of rescheduled appointments today after all the cancellations last week, so this morning I put on some Persian Shafayat perfume oil from Attar Bazaar. I bought it years ago before I was really into perfume and haven’t worn it in a really long time. It is really lovely, smells a bit like Shalimar only more natural/musky/lemony. I felt I could get away with wearing it around clients because it’s subtle, but long lasting.

Tonight I will put on some Indochine. I still have a little left in my decant and will use that before breaking into the bottle. In any case, it’s nice to have the decant bottle for refills of Indochine to take in my bag.

It’s snowing, finally. So happy to get SNOW and not just nasty cold weather (it’s been around zero six times this winter, but only a dusting of snow to this point)!

SOTD is Soivohle Centennial, for warmth.

In other news, I finally bit the bullet and went mucking around in my blog database to change my password and reinstate my admin privileges. SO GLAD to be able to post again – I’ve been locked out for three weeks now.

Nothing worse than irritating tech snafus and failures. What looks so easy has so many moving parts. I’ll have to visit again. I like reading your fragrance smackdowns. Cheers!

SOTD Hermes Un Jardin en Méditerranée from a sample. Although it’s on my To Buy list, I am on a self imposed fragrance spending moratorium. I went on a bit of a spree for fall and winter purchases and am trying to focus on those until the weather warms up. Clearly it didn’t work today – the sun was shining and I instinctively grabbed for a warmer weather scent.

Trefle Pur today, it has me wondering if there is something in it that smells like isopropyl alcohol? Even after several hours I keep getting wafts of something like that. It’s a bit sweet and aromatic as well.

I can still detect hints of Trefle Pur the next day. Great fragrance!
