Thursday scent of the day 2/12

Posted by Robin on 12 February 2015 162 Comments

Justin B. and Lara Stone for Calvin Klein Jeans

If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Calvin Klein CK One. I had to literally blow the dust off my mini. Anyone else remember the little metal vials they used to give out as samples? (And for all I know, they still do, although it seems unlikely.)

Reminder: tomorrow, 13 February, wear something by Guerlain. We already did this in summer, now we're doing it again for winter (or, for some of you, the other way around).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Oh and yes, I remember the little metal mini sample vials! In fact I have been perfume obsessed for so long (since 1971) that I remember when samples were literally thrown at you by SAs everywhere…it blows my mind that we are now paying for them-LOL!!!!

Yes, I had zillions of the little samples, so many that I never had to buy the fragrance.

Wow! Great way to save money! I also once had so many samples of Sinan that I transferred all into an empty perfume atomizer that I bought at Woolworths…filled it right up!

Just before our local Woolworth’s closed (sometime in the early 1990s, I think), my best friend and I went there with a third person to take our photos in the store, for old time’s sake. Woolworth’s was across the street from an old arthouse movie theater, and we had spent plenty of time in Woolworth’s buying candy to sneak into the theater, noshing in the lunch area, and purchasing life’s necessities and cheap luxuries. A security guard approached us and told us that we couldn’t take photos in the store. Seriously? What sacred secrets was Woolworth’s hiding? We moved along to another part of the store, and took our photos anyway. I miss that place.

I’m going to wear Neroli from Yves Rocher. Need a little zing, then it’ll settle to a soft cushion of easy muskiness. Nothing challenging, sick child at home then book club tonight. It’s a pot luck and I am making a sticky toffee pudding.

Thanks Robin, the book was The Rosie Project, a really fun read, I laughed out loud several times.

The STP was epic but I used an insane amount of butter and sugar to make it. I will have to wait a while before I make it again!

Keeping my little fella in the warm as he is still sick and it’s pouring with rain out there.

I own a bottle of CKOne and I still like it. Very nice in the summer.

I’ve sprayed some of the last of my sample of La Fille de Berlin, and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new bottle!! After this – and a few decants of Cuir de Russie and Bois des Iles I ordered via a Facebook group – I’m going to try to go on a no buy for a few……we’ll see if it holds.

CK One always reminds me of high school … boys that over applied and left a trail of scent :)

SOTD is JCrew no 31. Rose, plum, patchouli, and oakmoss. This is my only perfume purchase this year (rollerball was hard to resist). It’s nice. I’d like to do a side by side compare to velour de roses (rose, plum, patchouli, and bergamont). If my memory is correct, they are very similar but no 31 might be smoother (as in, a more cleaned up patchouli).

We’re probably around the same age, because this has a strong connection for me with junior high and high school too. I smelled it everywhere in junior high a couple years after it came out, and I didn’t object to it even when they were drenched in it. It’s a hard thing to overapply, at least in my experience.

Nothing unisex has been that popular since, has it?

Testing out layering SSS Winter Woods and Rose Musc. I like the musk in Winter Woods and thought Rose Musc needed more, so I figured: why not? For some reason, the combination started off sour, but it’s calmed itself down and I can now detect the parts of both that I like. Might have been a better experiment if I’d just put one on each wrist instead.

My perfume craze started in the 70s…for many years I was extremely disciplined. I would have 7-10 full bottles in my fragrance wardrobe and whenever one was emptied I would replace it with something else (usually something different that I wanted to try). Back in those days there were so few new fragrance releases, no place to “buy” samples and no such thing as decanting and splits. I usually emptied about 8-10 bottles per year…so yes, I have emptied quite a few bottles thus far!

I remember those little aluminum vials that CK One came in, kind of like a tiny milk bottle, and for CK Be they did the same thing but with a matte black coating. Those were NEAT.

Today I’m wearing a sample of Tauer Un Rose Chypré, and I wish I liked it better than I do, because the opening is interesting (kind of like rose marmalade) and you can tell it’s made with high quality materials: there’s nothing actually wrong with it, but it just gets less appealing as it ages on the skin. I’m supposed to look forward to the drydown.

Oh sad! Just saying above that the wonderful way it wears is what I love about URC! I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you. Have you tried other Tauer’s? He has several roses. I wonder if another one would suit you better?

I am sure I liked Incense Rosé better, although it’s been years since I wore it. The only Tauer I have ever really loved with abandon, enough to own a bottle, is Lonestar Memories, which is completely perfect.

For my money, Serge Lutens is the go-to rose perfumer. I mean, Sophia Grojsman made some world-class rose perfumes (Trésor, Paris) that have been reformulated into incoherence: all three Lutens roses are still great.

original vintage Chloe (1975) was a gorgeous tuberose with notes of orange blossom, coconut, aldehydes, peach, carnation, oakmoss, sandalwood, amber, cedar, benzoin….I have it in its perfume version and after all these years still smells lovely…..I think some of the discount sites might have the original…

I like the current Chloe and had two full bottles of that one (haven’t tried any of the flankers, though) but it is a very different scent to me…lighter and more rose -centric…… the original Chloe was rich and luxurious and perfect for a cold winter day!

Don’t go to the discount sites to get it – it’s been Messed With big-time. But it still shows up for relatively inexpensive prices on ebay – the little parfum minis are usually under $10, and they’re wonderful.

I wore the good old Chloe myself for more than a decade, and it was lovely.

SOTD is Pacifica’s Spanish Amber. The weather has gotten just a little cooler, although it’s still sunny. I thought amber would be just the thing to warm me up. However, there is a note in this one that is a little off today. I should have gone with my only other amber, L’Eau d’Ambree.

I like Tibetan Mountain Temple too. That one is the candle that scents my living room. I have the fragrance and I wear it occasionally, but unfortunately the vanilla in the drydown bothers me. I love the candle, and although I have never lit it (I have cats), the scent of the candle is enough to waft through my small living room. I am planning on buying either one of the florals or one of the fruit scented candles for spring and summer, but I just can’t decide on which one.

Going to be a really bad influence but I would encourage you to buy more than one candle! The candles are exquisite and smell up the room quite quickly! Years ago Pacifica used to sell the smallest size candles in gift boxes of 12 in three different selections (woods, florals, fruits). Needless to say I bought all three boxes so I have tried them all! For spring I always liked mediterranean fig, french lilac and lotus garden….for the summer indian coconut nectar, hawaian ruby guava, island vanilla, tuscan blood orange, wakiki pikaki, california star jasmine and bali lime papaya ( I think that one might be discontinued though). The mexican cocoa and tibetan mountain temple are fantastic in the winter as well as the egyptian bergamot rose and avalon juniper (both discontinued). Honestly, they all smell great!!!! (I guess I haven’t helped you much with your decision :) !!!)

Not really, but thanks for the information. I really wanted to try the Egyptian Bergamot Rose, but I didn’t buy it before it was discontinued. I like the pillar candles, because I have a tall candle holder that sits on my hearth and is the perfect size. I may try a couple of the scents though. Maybe a floral and a fruit.

Continuing on my sample program, I grabbed CdG Sequoia out of my stash.

I know that I really like this one, even though it leans a little masculine. It’s the definition of “bracing” and “contemplative” at the same time.

However, it is so short lived I could go through an entire bottle in a week. I dumped the entire sample on about 8am and it is already gone baby gone!

SOTD is Tokyo Bloom by The Different Company”. I am still on the fence of whether I like this fragrance or not. I want to love it because the notes it has are ones I don’t typically wear. Basil, dandelion, guaiac wood,….
This is a “green” fragrance and its a little different (haa!, hence the name of the perfumers).
Anyone tried this ? What were your thoughts?

Fils de Dieu today. Ive noticed i have ‘early summer’ and ‘late summer’ preferences. As the summer wears on and the heat becomes oppressive and the humidity rises, I find that there’s a group of frags I wear that fit, and the fresh breezy summery ones from earlier are just not right… hmmm… well… good thing I’ve got the numbers in my collection to readily face such a revelation!! ;-)

Totally makes sense! The local climate has progressively gotten warmer and sultrier over the summers this past decade, and I’ve found I need more genuinely light and airy scents for those times! I feel lucky that it’s still only for short periods of time that it’s sticky hot like that, but I can truly appreciate the need for scents that suit those days!

My SOTD for Throwback Thursday is vintage Lentheric Tweed, which I was lucky to find at an estate sale a couple of years ago. Complex, earthy, woody, it still smells the way it did years ago when I first discovered it – shortly after I became an Anglophile (having a best friend who was half-English and then discovering Agatha Christie clinched it), I used to wear it with all my winter wools and I felt very British! My bottle is probably 40+ years old (Tweed was originally created in 1933) and has aged very nicely, I don’t get much in the way of floral notes, but the oakmoss/patchouli drydown is divine.

SOTD = Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille

Very cozy boozy vanillic. I was in very close quarters with a bunch of other people in a crowded elevator and I hope that no one thought I was drinking at lunch!

Today, I interviewed 2 people and I could have sworn one of them wore Amouage Jubilation XXV. If Inwas 100% sure, I would have used perfume talk to break the ice although in hindsight, the candidate may obsess over having potentially offended me by wearing a noticeable scent.

Better to enjoy fragrance rather than liquor at lunch, eh?

I’m finding, much to my surprise, that I am developing a fondness for boozy fragrances. A whiff of the old Champagne/Yvresse got me started. Then Cedrat Enivrant jumped into my favorites list. Recently I noticed a hint of cognac in Hermes Vanille Galante. It makes me smile.

I noticed your comment over the weekend regarding the Hermes lock spray. I saw one being refilled once a while ago. I seem to remember the styrofoam needed to come off for the refill to fit in the lock case.

I should wander over to my local Hermes boutique and ask for a demonstration, yeah, not really, lol, that’s not my life right now. :)
