Tuesday scent of the day 2/3

Posted by Robin on 3 February 2015 173 Comments

oranges + blue

Happy Tuesday! Hope it's warmer where you are than it is here. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still in Parfum d'Empire Azemour les Orangers.

Upcoming: we have two community projects this week. On Friday (2/6), we're celebrating National Grapefruit month. Wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or Pomelo or whatever) is in the name of the scent.

Then on Sunday (2/8), we're celebrating this blog's 10th birthday: wear a fragrance you learned about on Now Smell This, whether from a review, another reader, a swap, anything.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD: La Petite Robe Noire L’Extrait. Planned last night to wear some rose/chypre e.g. Knowing but got up this morning and craved something sweet instead. :P

I just bought a small bottle of LPRN Couture and its been very comforting in this cold weather. I’ll bet the Extrait is nice too.

The extrait is my favourite actually :) It is closer to LPRN than couture though. Definitely a dark syrupy cherry and liquorice centric scent. It stays close to your skin but satisfyingly so ;)

Enchanted Forest. It’s actually not blackcurrant-y enough for me. I want something that really makes my jaw muscles tense up.

I like Enchanted Forest although I don’t wear it much… did not like Pulp, which I found very sweet, like a melted frozen fruit bar.

Several people mentioned Iris 39 yesterday, so I’m going to use up some of the last of my little sample.

    Might need more…

You know, this little sample lasted me such a long time, I think doing a little dabber sample in the meantime will work for me.

Also – sincerest congratulations on ten years of a truly great blog. It’s such a source of comfort and community to so many, myself included.

So few blogs last this long. It’s a testament to the quality of your work and the environment you’ve created. Well done indeed.

Oh, I’m sorry about your Hiris. You got me hooked on it, actually. I seem to remember it to be one of your favourites.
I’ve been very lucky so far. Most of my fragrances are still fine. Must be the temperate zone I live in.

I’ve only lost a fraction of full bottles, but still, perhaps we let our house get a bit too hot in the summer? Have lost way more decants, though.

Most of my perfumes are in cupboards in my bedroom which is facing North, so it doesn’t get that hot in summer. My fragile fragrances live in the fridge. If I had more space I would get myself a huge winecooler and put the whole lot in there.

While I feel it’s a little chilly down here in the swamplands, I’m pretty sure I have nothing to complain about regarding temperatures!

But chilly days like this are perfect for PdE Cuir Ottoman, which warms me to the cockles of my little heart <3 <3 <3

My decant is rapidly dwindling and I can't even think about those 100ml bottles :(

Fumigating everybody at work with some vintage Ambre Sultan.
This one is really odd, too little and it’s barely there, just a tad too much and it’s nuclear sillage.

Giving my sample of Fracas (the original, but current EDP) another whirl. It’s not a scrubber, but the peach is so domineering and overripe I don’t think I’d be able to handle the decomposition on a warmer day. It is just starting to smell less fruity and more floral now, finally… I like it a lot better at this stage. My office is freezing. Drinking lots of tea for warmth.

Interesting, Fracas is quite peachy on me as well. Need either Carnal Flower or Moon Bloom if I want intensive tuberose (and I never hear others mention it).

I don’t get peach out of Fracas, but I get a nuclear ton of soapy orange blossom. Which comes across as a giant vat of cold cream, and which nobody else ever mentions.

It amuses me sometimes how other scents/stimuli influence my choice of fragrance. Last night’s dinner beverage – Leinenkugel’s (aptly named) Winter’s Bite Cocoa Spice Black Lager – inspired my choice of Vanille Noir de Mexique topped off with Pacifica Mexican Cocoa. Fortunately, I don’t smell like beer, just yummy dark cocoa/vanilla/spice deliciousness!

Yes, Winter’s Bite is delicious (not affiliated, etc.). And I also enjoy the chocolate note in Covet, I find it to be a very versatile scent and like to wear it in the spring. With its lemon and geranium leave notes as well as the chocolate, it becomes a different scent depending upon which lotion I layer it with.

R’Oud Elements for me. I have no idea why this works for me today but it does. Sometimes it’s so rough and sharp I can’t stand it and sometimes it’s herbal and interesting. Today I’m finding it full bottle worthy, partially because I love the Kerosene bottles and don’t have any :( I think I still like Black Vines best though…probably. Obviously, I’m very indecisive today and I’m arranging the books in the den so not being very effective.

I think you are my scent twin! I love Black Vines too! Santa brought me a bottle for Christmas so if you would like more I would be happy to send you a decant. Let me know! I always find something different to love every time I sample a Kerosene fragrance. I wore the R’oud for oud day and hung up a dress this morning that still had a ghost of this lingering in it. R’oud Elements reminds me of some of my favorite Japanese incenses. Do you have a favorite Serge Lutens? I am still struggling to find the one. There is just a note in most of them that does not work on my skin. Arranging books makes me want to sit down and look at the books instead of putting them away!

I have been wondering if you and I share similar skin chemistry and tastes. I ordered a moderate sized decant of BV not too long ago, but thanks for the offer!
As for the books, my husband was working in the garage right below the den so every time he stopped hearing me tromp around he checked to be sure I hadn’t gotten sidetracked. Made me much more efficient, I can tell you.

The extrait is smoother and it also has less sillage. I like them both for different reasons, but you won’t go wrong with either.

Love the extrait! I kept trying the EdT because everyone so loves it, but my skin just ATE it. Gone in 45 minutes, none of the lovely sandalwood dry down everyone ooh’s and aah’s over. Finally got a sample of the extrait and — ooh, ahh, mmm. THERE’s the reason everyone loves it!

if you’re at all interested, I have an 100 mL 85% full bottle of Provence Sante Vetiver. It smells really good, but runs just a tad too masculine for me. I purchased it at Merz Apothecary in Chicago, it’s not widely distributed, I don’t think.

I hope my coworkers didn’t mind, no comments at least! Post-shower, for the night, I’m wearing a Weleda citrus body oil under Atelier Cologne’s Blanche Immortelle with several warm blankets, attempting to block out Sweden in February. It’s working pretty well for now!

Yes! I was very excited when they released those. I keep getting caught up on the full bottle being cheaper per mL (and feeling better in my hand), but in reality I will never go through an entire bottle. I need to talk myself into settling for the 10 mL bottles. They are easier to travel with..

Haven’t tried that many yet. Terre d’Hermès is too masculine for me. Coeur de Vetiver Sacré smells oddly like overripe starfruit gathering under the tree. Amouage Dia Man is a warmer vetiver that I truly love. And I adore Sycomore. Deciding if I need a FB of it or the Guerlain is a great conundrum in my life.

If you would like to try some more:

Goutal Vetiver; not the cologne but the original
          Lalique; Encre Noir
MPG: Racine & Route de Vetiver
          Etro; Vetiver

I like Sycomore but I don’t need it. If you want to try a truly powerful vetiver you may wish to try the LesNez Turtles; I’ve got 3 samples of Back and it nearly cleared my sinuses in a good way.

I LOVE Dior’s Vetiver. It also has quite a sweet and warm dry down. The main accent is coffee which makes it quite cosy. But, it also has the green feel of the vetiver. It is a less complex smell than the Guerlain – far less citrus, if any and without the aromatic tobacco. It is quite elegant and luxe smelling. I want to say that the vetiver smells like the best quality ever, but the truth is I don’t really know what good vrs bad vetiver smells like, so I can’t really explain that impression. I think the Guerlain is most likely a better deal for summer because of that citrus and aromatic feel. The Guerlain may be more interesting, but I feel like the Dior is somehow better quality and has more depth (could well be that this impression comes from knowing the Dior is more expensive!) I thought, however, that the Dior would quell my interest in the Guerlain, and it hasn’t! One impressive thing about the Dior is that it layers very well with ambers: it complements their warmth but adds a tinge of green :)

Wearing Ava Luxe Incense and feeling sad. Not because of the scent – which is very nice indeed – but because I just got home from taking my foster kitten back to the humane society. They asked me (I’m a volunteer there) to take her a month ago because she was such a terrified little thing that no one would want to adopt her. So I brought her home for some socialization. After the unpromising start of two days of hiding under the bed, she slowly started coming out of her shell. Last night she was bouncing around all over the house, playing and then finally falling asleep next to me on the sofa. I felt like a horrible person when I took her back. I know it’s the only way she’ll find the forever home she deserves, but it was hard on both of us (for a number of reasons, including Mr. Aparatchick and I are allergic to cats, we can’t keep her). Big Sigh. Maybe I need to buy some more perfume to cheer me up.

I’m testing out a DIY thing today. I have been playing with natural materials a lot lately, and I got some isolates to try out. I got some alpha ionone isolate, and I had a sample of bitter almond oil, so the first thing I thought of was Lolita Lempicka. I wondered how it would translate to take those notes (violet, anise, vetiver, patchouli, almond, etc) and use natural materials. So I made a little experiment. It was fun, and I’ve been pretty happy wearing it today. Interestingly enough, now it smells like there’s immortelle in here, and there isn’t.

I sold a horse, to a good home, and took my proceeds and bought a bottle of Roja Dove Bergdorf. I wear it every day. I never wear something every day. I can’t get over its beauty and smoothness and femininity. I’ve never even been in the STORE, Bergdorf. I love everything about this, except the price, but I tell myself it’s worth it. It makes me truly happy. But, after cleaning up half frozen dog poop in the yard, I scrubbed myself and applied a sample I just got from the Winter Sample Set from Lucky Scent and am trying Christian Clive L for Women. And I have to say…meh. Can’t wait to shower off tonight and put more Bergdorf on…Sheesh.

The MdV Vanille Givree des Antilles is nice, too, although more summery in feel than the VN.

Continuing with the theme of fragrances I’ve tried due to NST, my SOTD is Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, a sample of which I received in the Freebiemeet last year thanks to the charming and generous hajusuuri. It’s a very lovely rose, probably my favorite rose fragrance I’ve tried so far. (Amouage Lyric Woman seems to me to have a lot going on besides the rose.) I don’t know that I need a FB of a rose soliflore at this point in time, but if I did, it would be a contender.
