Friday scent of the day 1/9

Posted by Robin on 9 January 2015 183 Comments

Egg nog

It's Foody Friday! Our community project for today: wear a gourmand or foody fragrance. What did you pick?

As always, do chime in even if you're not participating in the community project.

I'm in the (cheap thrill!) Demeter Egg Nog. It took me nearly the whole week to find it.

Reminder: next Friday, 1/16, wear a fragrance from Prada or perfumer Daniela Andrier.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Cuir de Russie (Chanel). It is cold and windy here today, so this seemed perfect, and it is :)

Oh, I’m glad you’re wearing Egg Nog, because I’m wearing Orange Star, which smells like Tauerade plus orange soda, and I was just thinking “wait that’s not a food, it’s a drink.”

Hey, gourmand encompasses both, doesn’t it? If it was summer I’d be in Demeter Gingerale.

It must, because a lot of my “foody” scents actually smell like drinks (I have a whole mental category I think of as “eggnog scents”).

I don’t have many gourmand scents, so it was between Angel and Vetiver Tonka. I chose vetiver tonka, and it is perfect for today. I keep getting whiffs and being happy and warm.

Vetiver Tonka FEELS like vetiver you could eat — crystallized vetiver, like crystallized ginger! — so good choice.

Nancyg, think of it as an otherwise sweet carmel gourmand made wonderful by the addition of copious vetiver.

    Egg Nog is SO GREAT.

Early this morning I put on some Miel de Bois — honey is a food, right? — and then post-shower it was a toss-up between bakery Jeux de Peau and Turkish-delight Rahät Loukoum. The candy won, so it’s all sugar, all Serge, all day. Sweet!

I’m in Rahat Loukoum too! By the poll with the kids, temps approaching 100, so it should make no sense. But I just dabbed a little, and RL such a happy scent, not to mention a huge kid pleaser. It just feels great!

All my foodie scents have vanilla, and I have to be in the mood to enjoy a vanilla scent — and I’m rarely in the mood. Anyway, I combined Philosophy Pure Honey with Demeter Beeswax. Honey is a food — or at least a condiment.

Now going to google stuffed raisin cookies… because they sound good to me.

L’Elephant, even though it skates dangerously close to Opium territory, doesn’t quite tip over into it – instead it just tromps on being happy. I think it’s the dried-fruit notes.

I’m in PdN’s Vanilla Intense, which is nice, but not full bottle worthy. I really didn’t like the top notes, it smelled really clovey to me, but the mid and drydown are lovely, if surprisingly faint (I’m comparing it to my beloved Patchouli Intense, which is a sillage bomb on me). If you like Atelier Cologne’s Vanilla Insensee, this one is also worth sniffing, and reads more unisex.

I love cloves in perfume, but I’m not a fan of booze or patchouli as notes. How strong are the rum and patch in Vanilla Intense?

Cloves aren’t technically in the notes, but looking on the reviews at Fragrantica, I’m not the only one who picks them up here.

I don’t think the booze is too pungent, the patchouli is definitely noticeable, but I like the way Nicolai does patch – it’s dryer and more integrated, at least to me. But I also may have a very high threshold for it. I went to a hippie college, wore Coco Mad in my 20’s and love PdN Patchouli Intense! ; )

Still dithering. Can’t find what’s left of my 2ml sample of Kiss Me Tender (or did I use it up?). Not really in a vanilla mood, or I would go with Dame Perfumery’s Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. Daughter left for college this morning, so I could wear her B&BW Dark Kiss in her honor, or Hanae Mori. If I hadn’t used up my Prada Candy samples I could wear that.

However, I’m craving white florals today as I have been recently, so I think I will go with the fleurmand mashup of Vamp a NY.

Love it: aka Noble Rot. This reminds of the line in American Hustle:
“…it’s like perfumey…but there’s also something rotten. I know it’s crazy but I can’t get enough of it. Historically, the best perfumes in the world…they’re all laced with something nasty. It’s true! Irving loves it. He can’t get enough of it. Sweet and sour…rotten and delicious. Flowers, but with garbage…”

        An excellent quote.
However, I think in this case the name does not match the perfume. I read the article about botrytis cinerea in Wikipedia and the creators’ explanation of the name, but I still think they should have just named it Sauternes. Although maybe “botrytis” is meant as an allusion only a true oenophile would understand and appreciate.
Anyway, I get nothing like rot from Botrytis. It is a lovely and delicious scent, with boozy and floral notes to make it a bit more complex, and I love it as it is.

I don’t have much that falls into a foodie category. I thought about Prada Candy, or an iris-vanilla combo (Dior Homme or AC Silver Iris), but then I remembered the NST review of the new NARCISO that compared it to marshmallow spread…..so, I’m wearing this creamy sweet marshmallow gardenia as a warm blanket against the slushy mess that happens when you get 40 cm of snow in 2 days, then rain and above-freezing temperatures.

My favorite gourmand is Frapin 1697 absolu, which smells like a wonderful spicy creme brulee with cognac top notes. But that’s now what I’m wearing today – I’m still immersed in last week’s “go big or go home” theme with Coty L’Origan.

On Grain de Musc, Denyse describes smelling original formula L’Origan at the Osmothèque as “an olfactory punch in the stomach – just utterly beautiful – then a strange, déjà-vu (or rather, déjà-smelled) sensation.” And not only because of its similarity to “L’Heure Bleue without the blues.” “Tone down the flowers, pile on the spices and resins (myrrh, benzoin, opoponax, labdanum), and you get Opium (1997). Turn on the tuberose and Christian Dior’s Poison (1985) pops up.”

Nonetheless, perhaps L’Origan is not out of place in this poll either. Barbara Herman of Yesterday’s Perfume finds it less gourmand than L’Heure Bleue, but she also detects “a mysterious, rooty, dusty, sweet smell — like a Wiccan biscotti.” ;-)

What kind of birds are you watching? Outside my frosty window we have a multitude of the usual winter birds at our feeders -cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, flickers and other woodpeckers, and many sparrows – but yesterday I was lucky and our elusive neighborhood fox paid a visit to our backyard and so did the Cooper’s Hawk.

A fox? Very cool! What a colorful and lively group of visitors you have at your feeder! I saw a Cooper’s Hawk near my office downtown a few days ago. It was eyeing a birdbath, looking for a meal, no doubt.

Today, we went to a place that is not only great for birding, but for viewing ferns and mushrooms, both of which I find to be quite charming :-) Here is a partial list:

-Four different thrushes: Varied Thrush , Hermit Thrush (adorable spotted belly), Western Bluebird, and American Robin
        -Lincoln’s, Song, Fox, Golden-Crowned, and White-Crowned Sparrows
        -Spotted and California Towhees
-Common Mergansers. The females and immatures have slicked-back auburn mohawks :-)
        – Belted Kingfishers. They have mohawks, too.
-Other birds: Red-tailed Hawk, Anna’s Hummingbird, Oak Titmouse, Bewick’s Wren, Yellow-rumpled Warbler, Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Northern Mockingbird.
        – We were serenaded by Pacific Tree Frogs.

        Ain’t nature grand? :-)

Yes, She sure is! We get hermit thrush, song, white-crowned and white-throated sparrows, towhees, nuthatches and titmice, lots of warblers, during spring migration. If we’re lucky, scarlet tanagers, Baltimore Orioles, hummingbirds, and the elusive Indigo Bunting if we’re really lucky. My favorite is the little brown wren, who arrives in the spring and stays all summer and serenades me with his bright and cheery song, literally from morning until night, while I garden.

Totally forgot. I’m not really into gourmands, so some psychologist would probably say it was more avoiding. (Really, not!) I had some new samples arrive in the mail, and put on Rozy Voile d’Extrait, mostly because I love roses, but there is HONEY in there. Along with something growly and deep. I’m not sure what that darker note is yet. I’m not bored! What is this note? I keep sniffing my wrists. . . Hope you are safe and warm, wherever you are. Be well.

    I. too, could wear gourmands for many weeks, they are favorites of mine once cold weather arrives. But as soon as I saw Robin’s macarons photo earlier this week, I knew immediately which scent I would wear today, the scent that takes me back to a delightful afternoon once spent at Laduree: L’Occitane Delice des Fleurs, all sugared rose petals and candied violets. Tomorrow we are having our last holiday get-together of the season and I will see how those macarons that have been patiently wating in my freezer (from Trader Joe’s, not Laduree) compare to the genuine ones from Paris.

SOTD is Yves Rocher Vanille Noire. Lovely dark vanilla, and fairly quiet, which was appropriate for having my teeth cleaned this afternoon. I was thinking the only other thing I had was La Maison de Vanille Vanille Givree des Antilles, and worried that it might be too flowery to count as a gourmand, despite its extreme sweetness, but I guess anything with a heavy presence of something edible counts, which opens up the field considerably. Now I’m trying to decide whether to reapply the VN later, or switch to something else. (Hey, Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay would also qualify. I should have made time to read more of this week’s SOTD posts to get a better idea of the scope of “gourmand.”)

I’ve never tried this before, but it was in their $20 sample tin, which I splurged on during the holiday sales. Not my usual style, but pleasant and not too sweet. Kind of reminds me of the same vein as the Hermes Merveilles series.

Writing too late, but yesterday I wore Angel Taste of Fragrance. I always crave dark bitter hot chocolate. It was perfect for a cold day :)

I’m another that completely forgot! I didn’t actually wear anything yesterday scentwise. I’ll go with the coconut cream pie like VS Coconut Passion today though to do a belated sync.

I wore Amouage Opus I, which wears like a cinnamon cookie on me. Caught a whiff of it just now. It has lasted through 24 hours and a shower. Small wonder I am choosy when to wear it, it’s nuclear stuff.

I wore Prada Candy, one of my favorite gourmands.
