Friday scent of the day 1/2

Posted by Robin on 2 January 2015 180 Comments

big ben

It's Go Big or Go Home Friday! Our community project for today...just what it says, and you can interpret that howsoever you please.

As always, do chime in even if you're not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing La Via del Profumo Tawaf. Mighty big jasmine, and I admit I'm wearing only a dab or two.

Reminder: next Friday, 1/9, is Foody Friday: wear a gourmand or foody fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

No scent just yet, but in a little while I plan to put on some Amouage Gold Woman, which I consider to be a “big” fragrance in the best possible way. No apologies, no masquerading as laundry detergent or shampoo, no claims to be clean, fresh , or light. It is perfume that isn’t afraid to be perfume.

I just don’t see Gold as big, I find it rather delicate to be honest. It does smell very perfumy but in the best possible way. I love it.

I always see a woman with elegant shades marching forward in couture and high heels, and then an entourage of men carrying luggage, shopping bags, jewelry cases, and two prime pedigree dogs in tow….. Gold is just the bomb!

Happy Friday Everyone! I am a little upset today because my 2 – week winter break is coming to an end. Its back to work on Monday for me. Boy, how time flies! As I fight it kicking and screaming, my “Go Big or Go Home” SOTD is Santal Blush by Tom Ford. Tom Ford is a force to be reckoned with and so is this fragrance. It is my “power” fragrance that makes me feel bold and powerful. :)

Ugh. Don’t remind me! And I have about 15 hours (no exageration) of grading I’d brought home to do over break–and of course, it’s been entirely untouched these two weeks! I’m trying to figure out the least painful way to plow through it and still feel like I’m on vacation. . .

Maybe it’ll snow for Monday? :D

The weather report in Houston says that we will have a light freeze here on Sunday night. We Houstonians don’t know how to drive on icy roads. Is it wrong to keep my fingers crossed that the freeze will cause schools to be closed on Monday? One can only hope! Lol!

I opted for “go home,” so I’m wearing Love, Chloé because it reminds me of the wisteria in the park near where I grew up. When I first smelled this one a few years ago, it immediately took me back to my childhood, so even though Love, Chloé is a little out of character for me, I can’t help but to like it. I find it very youthful and spring-like, so I layered with Barbara Bui to make it feel a little more seasonally appropriate.

Well I’m not sure if I’m going big or going home, but this morning I’m trying Bal d’Afrique. I haven’t showered yet, so I’ll probably try something else after the shower, but I’m not sure what yet. A lovely problem to have I think!

As for the Bal d’Afrique, it’s really pleasant but TBH it smells an awful lot like the Bath and Body Works Fresh Picked Tangerine body creme I have (nearly identical so far), and the BBW Tangerine is significantly cheaper! :)

    SOTD = Serge Luten L’Incendiaire

I’m home and I am going “big”. Since I really could not wear my 80s vintage Opium, I decided to go with BIG money perfume. I’ve been hoarding my sample and unless this goes on sale or is part of some deal or I go bonkers, I will have to make do with my remaining sample or try to acquire some more samples (I can be persuasive sometimes).

I was planning on Broadway Nite or Gold or something else BIG but felt like something a bit more soothing so instead i went big in quantity.. at home today so i doused myself in Tom Ford Noir, and tonight many many sprays of Jasmin Noir L’Elixir, which with its candied orange and jasmine and resinous notes is just what i needed.

It was a toss-up for me between Carolina Herrera (big tuberose) or Panthere de Cartier (big civetty floral) and I went with the Cartier. I stocked up last summer when it was discontinued so I have a lifetime supply. I still don’t understand why it was discontinued-so customers wouldn’t confuse it with the new La Panthere? But somehow folks remember similar flanker names, so I don’t know…perhaps it didn’t sell well.

Well, the original Panthere debuted in the mid-1980s. It might be a case of no longer selling well, but it had a pretty decent run.

No I haven’t. In a way I do not wish to, as the original Rien is so good. I sort of giggled when I read that they had created an Intense version. It’s hard to imagine anything more intense, or bigger than the original.

I do love wearing it every so often, especially when I’m in a cranky mood. I am so curious about the new “Intense” version… can’t imagine it being amped up either!

Nearly my entire collection would suit the “Go Big” category, however you interpret it! (I’m not such a subtle person, I guess!) BUT, as I have scheduled a massage this afternoon, and I’m desperately clinging to what is left of my vacation while still trying to check off items on my to-do list, I am going to attempt “going home,” instead. I am torn between a truly quiet/serene scent (L’eau d’Hiver) and a deeply familiar, comforting (not as subtle) scent (Guet Apens). Will have to decide soon, before I head out to accomplish stuff. . .

I am in a “go home” scent today. Blowing through my second decant of PG Felanilla, which is soft, fuzzy, but still has a nice strong spine! It’s a damp, dreary, overcast day here so this is what jumped out at me after spin class and shower.

I just finished listening to the “Serial” podcast and am thinking of going through it episode by episode again in case I missed anything the first time around. Anyone else interested in that murder mystery…? it’s a sad and perplexing story for sure.

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year so far =)

Oh yes to Serial! I followed it week-by-week as it was being produced. Really well done! However, it makes me very concerned about how we investigate crimes–the “get one working hypothesis and run with it” strategy must expedite things, but scares me that it could railroad innocent people. Or at least people innocent of that particular crime (in this case, I feel that the boys are hiding *something* but I’m not sure what!).

Yes, I thought it was really well done too! Old School investigative journalism as its best, not hyperbole and “entertainment” as mainstream journalism seems to be now. I cant even imagine the amount of work and research that went into it! I am clueless about the truth of events, but its hard to tease apart all those lies. I know what my heart tells me, but “beyond reasonable doubt” it what keeps me intellectually undecided.

I hoping you chose the Malle scent- I love that one but have to admit I haven’t smelled the other choice you posted.

Guet-Apens is the alternative name for Attrape Coeur (which was also briefly released as No. 68), all Guerlain. If you haven’t sniffed it, I can’t decide if that’s a terrible tragedy or a blessing! It is a gorgeous rose violet, and sadly deeply discontinued. Once in a while bottles can be found for generally outrageous prices and sometimes decants for slightly less outrageous prices.

In any case, I *did* decide on Malle today. Hard to go wrong with it!

Everytime I see “Felanilla”, the first thing I think of is “That’s a nice name for a cat” or perhaps that is what I will call my Forester from here on forward :-)

Felanilla was my second PG FB purchase.

Montale Intense Tiare, 8 or 9 spritzes. I’ll still be smelling this tomorrow

And for big news–4 of us (Ihadanidea, missionista, hajusuuri and myself )have organized the first NY live swap. It will be on 1/16 at 6:30 in Manhattan. We have 8-10 slots available. The idea is to bring a few things and go home with different things. Comment here then shoot an email to me– my yahoo address is my screen name

Have a great 2015, Austenfan! Ambra is a beautiful, smoky amber, less herbal and hence a tad sweeter than Ambre Sultan, but I have still to try Ambre Russe.

Staying home today, literally and figuratively. SOTD Adam Levine for Her. It was a blind buy for nearly pennies a couple days ago. Someone on NST has mentioned this a few times but I can’t recall who. This is my first wearing. It’s cozy and soft – perfect for cleaning up after two weeks home with lots of activity.

I had a hard time deciding, so in the end, just went for the vintage Poison again. However, I am wearing SIX (yes, 6) generous dabs of it. I get to be in an office all by myself all day doing data entry. I have no idea how strong the sillage is–I can’t really smell myself any more. I may have blown out the nerve endings in my nose. :)

Poison’s pretty big. If I’m wearing it, it’s two spritzes max.

…if you’re dabbing, is it the esprit de parfum? that version seems a little softer than the original edt, anyway.

Mals, you’re *good*! I just double checked the bottle, and it is indeed the esprit de parfum. I also have a small sampler of vintage edt, and it does not seem to have aged as well, so I don’t wear it as often as the other (not that I wear the esprit all that often either.)

Vintage poison was my choice too! First time I’ve worn it and the bf is not impressed which is a surprise because he usually loves BIG scents, he even owns a 100ml bottle or Black Orchid! Well it was his to begin with, now it’s “ours” hehe

I think it’s a man/woman thing. I know a lot of women who love vintage Posion, and almost no men who do. My primary partner can’t stand the stuff. Hated it then, hates it now. Enjoy it, and know that both you and the bf are in good company. :)

Going big is not my style – I don’t think I have anything that would fit today’s project! It’s been very cold for San Diego the past few days (40-45 during the day! It usually is cold in morning/at night, but during the day is crazy – even snowed in some areas that never get snow). Anyway, wearing La Maison de la Vanille Vanille Noire du Mexique. This was one of my first non-mainstream purchases (at the time at least!) as I first got it at Anthropologie. This is also one of the few scents I have re-bought as I am on my second bottle, though I rarely wear it now. It’s often described as powdery and generally I hate powder. Not sure why I get along with this one. Happy New Year everyone!

Ta’if by Ormonde Jayne in the parfum concentration,… I was sick 2 weeks ago and I think I cleared out the elevator because I couldn’t figure out why I could not smell my new bottle (of the parfum version – I dabbed and dabbed and dabbed, then I sprayed and sprayed and sprayed, but couldn’t smell a thing! The parfum was not defective…. so you might imagine what happened). With EDP I could just do two spritzes and it would last all day. Well my nose is back and yeah, it takes only a spritz or two to last all day and my clothes will have the faint scent until washed . My experience with BIG! I don’t even want to think about how much perfume I wasted that day because my nose wasn’t working!

I can so imagine the poor elevator gang LOL
And I completely understand the nose not working, several years ago I had a terrible cold and couldn’t smell a thing. Unknown to me I stepped in dog poo and tracked it inside the office! OMG! People were sniffing around to find the culprit and when I was found to be the guilty party everyone had a huge laugh as I sat there with a “what??” expression on my face. I never lived that down.

I have quite a few that could carry this category for room clearing awesomeness, but I had to demure today and needed to chill post-holiday. I’m wearing some Guerlain Bois d’Armenie, but otherwise, if I was going for it, I would have picked eitherThierry Mugler Alien Essence Absolue or DelRae Bois de Paradise. BdP carries it’s massive-ness for about 24 hours! I’m about at the point if I want ot wear BdP, that I will just apply some on my ankle and let it waft up.

Well, not sure this qualifies as BIG, but SOTD is Caron Tabac Blond edt, sprayed with abandon. I didn’t think I had anything that truly fit the “big” bill until someone mentioned Joy, and then I remembered I have the dregs of a sample of Patou 1000 … oh well. I also have some OJ Tolu, but similarly to Mals I OD’d sampling the Ta’if/Tolu/Orris Noir trifecta and now have to be in the right mood for the OJs.

I’m going with Coromandel tonight. It just jumps right out there on me! Didn’t have the courage to wear it to work since last week there was a “comment” at work and that was just 2 half sprays of BV. I can’t even imagine what Coromandel would do to the poor dear!

You are to be envied! For some reason, I’ve been thinking a lot about frags I loved as a teen, and Norell is one. I never owned any, but I always made a point to sniff (and sigh…) whenever I saw it in a store.

I picked Onda EdP today, four spritzes. My sniffer is not fully functional, so I may have killed people when I ran a brief errand. Fun reading about what everyone thinks of as BIG fragrances. I recently got a crazed idea to layer Onda extrait and Carnal Flower, two huge scents, and it was not half bad. I may do that again! Be well.

I forgot about GBOGH Friday, but happened to wear Roberto Cavalli Oro, lavishly applied. It is still going strong after a day at Knott’s Berry Farm. Given how many times my personal space was invaded today, it didn’t seem to be offensive to the general public.

Today I went big with a sample of Caron Bellodgia. Usually I dab very, very sparingly, and then sniff-sniff-sniff very, very carefully. Must conserve this discontinued lovely.

But in the interest of science I put at least 15 good sized dabs on one wrist then smooshed it upagainsy my other wrist. Whooo! Spicy and warm. When I got in the car a few minutes later, my traveling companion thought the car was on fire. :P Win!

Without thinking, I just grabbed Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Love. it does start out very big on me, but I love the dry down, and how it softens, but still remains quite there.

That was about 3:30 this afternoon, and it is still going strong at midnight!

I haven’t worn a scent that lasted this long in forever, and I really love that it has lasted this long.
