Friday scent of the day 12/5

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2014 146 Comments

L'Occitane immortelle image

It's Friday At The Mall! Our community project for today: wear something from a mall chain (Lush, The Body Shop, Victoria's Secret, L'Occitane, etc & etc). What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you aren’t participating in the community project.

I'm wearing L'Occitane Immortelle de Corse.

Reminder: next Friday, 12/12, wear something from Christian Dior. On 12/19, we'll do De-stress Friday...as we approach the holidays, wear something that keeps you tranquil and relaxed.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is L’Occitane Vetyver layered over Vanilla Bergamont body butter (Bliss). Spicy and yummy!

TJ Max – I was there the other day and they had lemon sage, blood orange and white pepper, and vanilla bergamont. Good deal … between that and the body shop buy two get one free, I think I have enough lotion for three or four years 😕

I just went to TJ Maxx yesterday and stocked up — got another vanilla and bergamot (my favorite! the only vanilla scented lotion I’ve ever loved) plus a lemon and sage. I also got some nice scented candles. Apparently early December is when they get all the good stuff — I spotted bottles of Sensuous Nude and Noir, a Reem Acra set ….

Most vanilla lotion smells like frosting with caramel. This smells like custard – the real kind with cream, the flecks from vanilla beans, and only a hint of sweet. Really nice.

Yep, and with the bergamot it’s almost like a very simplified version of Shalimar.

I don’t own any mall brands, so I’ve gone for Le Noir by Lyn Harris for Marks & Spencer (there’s an M&S in the nearby shopping centre, so that’s good enough for me). Hot spice over patchouli and amber with a faint dash of citrus. Unfortunately it, and the others in the line, seems to have gone the way of the dodo. Shame really, they were pretty good for the money.

I thought I had a bunch of Lush samples but couldn’t find them so I’m wearing the one I did find, Voice of Reason. Hoping my co-workers don’t think I just started out with scotch this morning. I actually like this a lot once it gets past the first part. The drydown reminds me a little of CB I Hate Perfume 7 Billion Hearts.

It’s so strong that I can’t wear it if I’m working and when I do wear it, it’s only one spray at a time so I definitely haven’t used almost 4ml.

I’m wearing The Body Shop White Musk. This was one of my favorite perfumes in high school, when I couldn’t afford (and wasn’t aware of) much else. These days I use it most often for layering, and will probably add a little dab of something else (maybe Angel) later today.

I snagged a coffret of two bottles of White Musk at TJ Maxx over the summer, and have been looking for an excuse to break them out. Today’s the day! Finally a Friday scent-of-the-day in which I can take part! It’s an almost aggressively pleasant scent, isn’t it?

I’m wearing this one as well (second outing this week). I was surprised to realize this morning that this is my only ‘mall chain’ fragrance (though I’ve owned other L’Occitanes before, and TBS and BBW ones in the distant past). I think Ambre & Santal is a very well-crafted fragrance that can hold its ground against niche offerings in this genre. It’s a very easy-to-wear scent and is becoming a go-to on colder mornings when I can’t quite decide what fragrance to wear. The shower gel in the scent is surprisingly long-lasting, too.

I went for it today and am wearing Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy, which is vanilla, clementine and blackberry. I don’t think it’s bad for what it is, and I actually like the residual smell on fabric.

I tried layering it with some floral musk oil to give it more depth, but the musk got completely overpowered. Hence, I shouldn’t have been surprised when someone at work asked “Is that perfume?” I wear fragrance every single day, so I’m pretty mortified that apparently this one drew attention. Feeling a little self-conscious now that I either smell terrible, or I wore waaaaay too much.

Should’a gone with my Williams Sonoma spiced chestnut lotion…

I realise that I must be a terrific fragrance snob as I don’t have any Mall chain fragrance in my collection. So I decided to move as far away as possible from those scents in wearing Chanel’s Cuir de Russie in extrait.
I do enjoy these community projects though and next week I will be a better perfumista and join in the fun more seriously 🙂

The edt is smokier and not as lush as the extrait, although extremely beautiful as well. I have a decant of the EDT and a full bottle of the extrait. I hope you enjoy your Cuir de Russie!

I wavered between getting the extrait or the edt for a while, but since I’ve already splurged on other FBs (Journey Woman and Nuit Rouge by Antonio Alessandria) I figured I’d go with the cheaper edt bottle. I’ve never actually tried the extrait and just read what reviews I could find about the current version. I did have a decant of the dt though and fell completely in love with it. I like smoky notes.

Oh thank goodness there are others who have no mall perfume. I had a few things but gave or swapped them away, one I left in the lady’s room at the library when no one else was in there. Since it takes time to use up a whole bottle, And there are only so many days in a lifetime, I decided to use only what I love best.

I had a hard day and traveling to house calls by bus in the cold takes its toll. Tonight I had a clove cigarette and 2 sprays of Ambre Sultan, wrapped up in my wool shawl and now luxuriate on the couch.

Layered L’Occitane White Tea (discontinued) over Atelier Vetiver Fatale. It’s an interesting mix and the White Tea ended up being much warmer as a result.

I don’t own any scents from these stores but it less a matter of snobbery and more an issue of never/rarely going in these stores. The idea of Lush intrigues me – are these perfumes everyone is wearing or more body spray type of things?

Another sample package arrived so I couldn’t resist trying something new anyway! SOTD is 24 Faubourg which started kind of HUGE on me but after an hour I am mostly getting that salty ambergris feeling from another Hermes I already own, Eau des Merveilles. I will have to try this one a few times to see what I really think. This was totally not a casual ‘quick errands with no makeup’ kind of perfume 😀

Most of the Lush frags I’ve seen mentioned today are not body sprays. They’re mostly liquid perfumes or solids and are stronger than a body spray. I don’t think that they usually list concentrations, like EDT or EDP, but I would put Rose Jam and Sikkim Girls in the EDP category.

Haha, no worries. It’s a shame L’Occitane doesn’t make White Tea anymore because it really is a very beautiful tea perfume. I like wearing it most in the summer time. It’s like that ice-cold-tea-on-a-hot-day sort of scent 🙂

L’occitane Neroli today. I bought this about 9 years ago, but I don’t think it’s the original drooled over one. It is however, pretty damn good! I liked the older L’occitane scents- they had a bit more depth and darkness to them. This is the one in the travel range, and I have the 3 minis in a little gold compass travel holder.

I don’t have a Lush. L’Occitane or TBS anywhere near me… we do have a B&BW and a Victoria’s Secret, but I’m bitter over the direction VS has gone with regards to their fragrances. (I still miss the original Victoria, and every ebay bottle I’ve found has been unwearably degraded – which might have been why it was d/c in the first place, but NO MATTER, I miss the days when VS was classy. I do still have a bottle of Pink, the old peony-green floral one, but it’s too cold and wet for that today.)

My options would be a sample of Lush’s The Scent of Weather Turning, which is fascinating but sort of weird, and my old standby B&BW Velvet Tuberose, which has been relegated to bathroom deodorizer lately… Hmm. I might have to punt this Friday challenge. L’Arte di Gucci is calling my name.

My SOTD is Rose Jam perfume by Lush. It is very sweet and very strong, so I apply it with a cotton ball. One tiny spritz on a cotton ball that I dab once behind each ear. I am careful not to get it on my shirt, because I don’t like the way it smells on fabric.

My husband sniffed me this morning and said that he was undecided on it. He thinks it’s too sour. It does have a lot of lemon up top.

I keep it in the fridge because it is so potent that it take me forever to use it up.

I’m wearing some Plumeria body spray from B&BW that was part of a secret Santa gift from a co-worker back in 2001. Surprisingly, it still smells pretty much as it always did – no degradation from age. Maybe it’s like the cockroach….still alive and kicking after the apocalypse! lol

Well, I was dreading this challenge. I don’ t have anything that qualifies, although many years ago I did have a Body
    Shop Lilac fragrance oil.

My SOTD is something I bought a long time ago at a mall when mall shopping was the only game anywhere: Clarins Eau Dynamisante.

    Cheers!!

I was wondering which Chanel you had chosen, I actually like to layer perfume with scented lotion but had to get up too early this morning to achieve any kind of successful layering so I just stuck to Cuir and non perfumed lotion. You smell great I’m sure.

I think the grapefruit lotion works very nicely with Shalimar, but with N. 5 there was no common ground for the two scents to merge, so they were just kind of superposed. But, of course, No. 5 won the battle, and it’s aldehydes were all I needed to feel alive again! I’m sure you smell great, Cuir de Russie in EdT is so beautiful already, I can only imagine how wonderful the extrait must be.

I’m wearing L’Occitane Wild Honey and Vanilla. It was a tough decision and I had a hard time choosing between that, B&BW Vanilla Noir, A VS scent with lots of cranberry and vanilla and L’Occitane Delice des Fleurs. There are a lot of mall scents in my wardrobe. 😉 Even some vintage VS Tranquil Breezes, but I like to save that one for warm weather.

Oh, the days when I could just be satisfied with perfume shopping at the mall…

Yep. Same here and I remember feeling so grown up when I got some of it and Pear Glace as body splashes right around seventh or eigth grade. I splurged on the edt my junior year of high school and thought I was hot stuff strutting around school. lol

Oh, and while I didn’t appreciate it back then, a friend of mine in junior high used to drench herself in a VS Vanille Caramel perfume which, in moderation, would probably be really nice now. I think there was an entire line of them. Too bad they’ll probably never be brought back.

I won’t disclose just how many Delice des Fleurs gift sets I bought back when beauty.com had them and ran their 20% off sales. They came with a full size edt, full size shower gelee that’s fantastic, little lotion, 30ml scented shea hand cream and tin of rose or violet flavored lip balm. And I “may” have gone on a little stocking up spree on Evilbay, too. I simply can’t get over how much I love that stuff. It is totally like macarons in a bottle. Swoon…

VS used to really have some great perfumes. I always loved Enchanted Apple, Tender Orchid, Tranquil Breeze and some blend of peach and hyacinth that was the perfect mix of both, and still always keep bottles of Rapture around since it’s one of Mr. Ab. Scent’s favorites and what he wanted me to wear for our small, simple wedding since I wore it when we dated. 😉

Mals, B&BW’s Freesia was really nice, as was their Plumeria and the Tuberose that came out some years back. I wish they’d try to make some nice soliflores again. The last flowery one I tried was Butterfly Garden and it just smelled like pollin-dipped violet candies on my skin.

I’m traveling, and the only thing I brought with me that qualifies for today’s theme is L’Occitane’s Green Tea & Bigarade shower gel. It’s nice in the shower, but the scent doesn’t linger at all. Not sure what I’ll wear later – brought a small decant of Santa Maria Novella Eva with me and might go with that.

Indulging my inner child’s love of Christmas cookies today, I’m wearing two of my favorite mall scents: the original L’Occitane Vanille (1996?) in parfum extrait form dabbed over a thin veil of BBW’s Vanilla Bean Noel body lotion. I hear “Mmmm, you smell good” whenever I wear these, often from perfect strangers standing in a grocery store line..

When L’Occitane opened their first boutique near me (in mid-to-late 90’s), their fragrances were simple yet rich and long-lasting, especially in the delightfully tiny extrait bottles that could tuck into the smallest of pockets: the deep, caramelly Vanille, orange-cinnamon Canelle, the classic warmth of Ambre, and (swoonworthy on men) original Vetyver. By the early 2000’s these had all been d/c or morphed into something ‘less-than’ and were clearanced out. Luckily, I picked up numerous extraits, edt’s and small wax solids; gave some as gifts and still wear and have some today – they’ve lasted well. The original Vanille is my very favorite vanilla scent and I will cry when it’s all gone – but I still have 1 edt and 1 extrait in my stash – whew!

I’m a big ol’ Lush bomb today. I’m wearing Rose Jam layered with Lust. It’s a nice combo, but you can’t go too wrong with rose and jasmine. I guess I must be more sillage-y than normal, though, because I work with two guys who never notice perfume, and they both did today. Luckily they both commented positively, with one saying it was soothing. He also said it smelled kind of like incense to him, which was interesting.

I also don’t wear the Rose Jam perfume all that much.. I think I’ve given more of it away than I actually wear. I love the shower gel, and I absolutely adore Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner, but the perfume is sharper and more lemony, which I’m not always thrilled about. But layering with Lust seems to be helping cut the sharpness a bit.

Yes, the perfume is a bit too sharp for me for the first hour or so, but if I only apply it to my skin, then the sharpness fades after an hour or so. If I get it on my clothing, then it’s sharp all day 🙁

Kindcrow will probably pass out if she knows how many times I pressed the sprayer and I am not telling.

Our local L’Occitane had an immortelle perfume a few years ago, but they only had a tester that they brought out from the back room for me to smell. I liked it, and I should have purchased it when it was on-line 🙁

Wearing Gap Sugarsnap body mist. I have a huge 8.4 oz glass bottle that I got for a whopping $5.97. Think it was from a set they did about 5 years ago and I have another one that is kind of tropical called Islandhop. According to the label, it is a “tantalizing blend of pear flower and dew-drenched lotus, founded by creamy white woods and a dash of musk.” I don’t know about the woods and musk, but it is a very sweet green fruity floral. More apple-y than pear to me. And I’m sure it will disappear in time for me to put something different on this afternoon – maybe one of the B&BW body sprays I got on clearance – White Citrus or Lemon Vanilla.

Today I went total Bath and Bodyworks. I used Vanilla Bean Noel bodywash in the shower, then followed up with Apricot Vanilla body lotion. I may do a light spritz of Tresor later tonight. Although I think the only mall perfumes I own would be Chanel and Annick Goutal–do those count?–because I’ve been selling some of Tama Blough’s perfumes for her, I have a whole box of mall perfumes in my house that I’ve never tried. So because of today’s theme, I decided to test two Gorilla perfumes of hers, Sikkim Girls and Furze. I’m liking the Sikkim Girls, though it does remind of me Songes, which I already own.

Also wearing Lush Rose Jam! It was a highly successful blind buy last year when everyone was bemoaning its limited edition status. It’s strong stuff and I have to be in the right mood for its rosy baby powder goodness.

I don’t actually have many mall perfume choices. Right off, I only thought of that coconut lime verbena one and the original Breath of God (which shouldn’t count, I guess). I might have worn Aveda Yatra, had I not forgotten it was tucked away in the fridge. I’m sometimes tempted by the pretty L’Occitaines but don’t have any currently.

Forgot about the Friday Project today and put on MFK Cologne pour le Soir, which I have been wearing pretty steadily for the past several days, thanks to a Fumie Friend Swap (Tipping my hat to AnnS)! I have a nice size spritz sample and if a full bottle were to come knocking at my door I wouldn’t turn it away. However, methinks this is only available in a 200ml bottle and I didn’t even bother to check the price because that is just way TOO much juice for me.

After some yard work later, I will be showering with Rose Jam and scenting myself up with Vanillery Solid from LUSH so I guess I get points for partial participation 😉

Hope you all have a Fab Friday!

I am rather late to the game today, but I am wearing the Arquiste for J. Crew No. 57 and it is delightful! I have to say, I really enjoy it, and it’s not what I expected, but in a good way. It’s got a burst of citrus in the beginning (lime?) and then LOTS of booze, and then it turns into a lovely, warm, almost gourmand fragrance. I got the rollerball during their 30% off Black Friday sale and now I am tempted to get the other one.
