Thursday scent of the day 12/4

Posted by Robin on 4 December 2014 131 Comments

Lush Furze components

What fragrance did you choose for today?

I'm wearing the sunny and cheerful Lush Furze, and wishing I was somewhere warm enough to match.

Reminder: this Friday, 12/5, is Friday At The Mall: wear something from a mall chain (Lush, The Body Shop, Victoria's Secret, L'Occitane, etc & etc).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing SL Datura Noir. It is cold today, and I woke up wanting to smell something lush and mysterious and semi-tropical.

Thinking about tomorrow’s scent: I only have l’occitane fragrances and they are so spring/summery light I might need to layer one of them with something more substantial because I need warm and lush for this cold weather.

Wearing Anubis by Papillon Artisan Perfumes today. Soft, comforting leather.

I have The Bug from Lush but the local mall sent me to the Union Sq store to sniff when those came out since that set of fragrances had limited distribution. On the other hand, I could pay a visit to a very upscale mall and try the new Hermessence. Definitely not the intention of tomorrow though

I’ve still got Vanille Insensée stuck to my skin from last night. It’s very tenacious stuff.

Robin, speaking of Lush, it looks like the perfume has finally returned to the North American site in the new packaging. Also, Lush UK is doing five limited editions. So far they have Jungle and Lord of Misrule available.

Okay. So they’ve been adding a new one each day this week? That means the final one is tomorrow. I wonder what it will be. Any word on these coming to North America? I want Lord of Misrule pretty badly.

And you’re right. They did take their precious time getting the perfume back up. It’s still just greatest hits though. I’m really looking forward to the new stuff. Kind of miffed they got rid of the 2 ml sample sprays though. Overall, much better packaging though. Those black bottles were grim.

Vanille Incensee sticks around for sure. I smelled it the other day and it reminds me of Dior Hypnotic Poison. A coworker has been wearing HP and when I got my mini of VI last week the similarity hit me.
Wonder if my theory would hold up toa side by side comparison. .

Please update once you get a chance to compare side by side. I always like to hear the results from these comparisons. Maybe we could do a weekend poll on this topic? I find Rose Anonyme quite similar to Timbuktu.

Yesterday’s Sacrebleu inspired my choice of L’Heure Bleue today. It’s still very grey and quite cold here, but LHB is beautiful no matter what the weather.

Mulling over my choice for tomorrow. I’ll probably have to cheat as I don’t own any mall fragrances.

I’m finally giving Bvlgari Black the chance it deserves and have to admit it’s significantly better than I originally gave it credit for. I’m still not sure whether or not it’s working for me, though. One minute I’ll think it’s great, and the next minute, something about the vanilla doesn’t seem quite right. It’s been growing on me all morning, though, so maybe by the end of the day, it will be love.

Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger, from a sample. I don’t think I’d buy it, but it’s AWFULLY good, unexpectedly spicy (almost a hint of curry) among all the flowers. If I had to wear a white floral at gunpoint, this would be the one.

I guess I am wearing a mall scent today–EL Knowing. I really love this fragrance–it is the only EL that I wear (except for the occasional laying w White Linen to amp something up). I’d probably wear it more often if I wasn’t such a snob about having my fragrance recognized. Knowing is pretty easy to identify, and I hate the idea of someone knowing I am in Knowing! (Yes, this is a dumb pretension on my part!)

I doubt anyone other than a hardcore Knowing fan would recognize it! I am terrible at recognizing perfumes “in the wild”. I think the only things I definitely can identify are Angel, Light Blue, Eternity and Womanity. And Knowing is very nice – used to have some of the cream that came as a GWP.

Gosh, I thought I was off the grid w Womanity. Such a weird name. . . But now that you mention it, I did see it sold in a very tiny pop up type duty free shop at the airport along with Chanel No. 5, Lovely, and only about 10 other frags. I was surprised it made the airport’s top 15 selling list.

    Happy Friday – Eve Everyone!
My SOTD is EL – Sensuous Noir. In my opinion, this is the best fragrance from Estee Lauder. All of their fragrances are exceptionally made, but this one is fabulous. I really like Modern Muse also. But, I know a lot of NST readers aren’t fans.

I generally have difficulties with something in the base of many Lauders, even though they tend to smell great to me for the first two-three hours (all three of my aunts wear EL, and they smell wonderful). On my skin, after three hours, I’m nauseated for some reason. I did figure out that I could wear Beautiful on a scarf, and it was really lovely… I’m just not going to purchase something I can only wear on clothing. Oh well.

I really enjoyed MOdern Muse on a scent strip – left it on my desk to smell from time to time – but on my skin it was a lot less successful. I don’t know what the difference is.

I just remembered a college friend who used to spray perfume all over herself, her clothes, even in her shoes. She said it was a little thrill to take off her shoes later in the day and get a fragrant surprise from Calvin Klein. :P She had so many bottles of CK fragrances, she liked to make them work for her.

The whole Flower line seems to be a bit oddball. I went through many bottles of FlowerLeParfum before it was discontinued. I never found anyone else who liked it though (although I had a roommate once who wore Flower, and it felt like such a coincidence!). Strange, because I don’t think either Flower or FlowerLeParfum is particularly unapproachable.

I’ve never smelled Le Parfum but I find Flower very friendly for all its weirdness. I mean, all of the notes taken individually are probably relatively safe and popular but Kenzo has managed to put them together in a way that doesn’t smell like anything I’ve tried. Maybe that’s what weirds people out?

I didn’t realize the flanker collection was so extensive. I would love to smell more by Kenzo. I also love Amour (have a FB) and a sample of Jungle L’elephant. I only ever see Amour and Flower in shops which is too bad, because they’re a little off the beaten track for mainstream perfume.

Just spritzed on some Atelier Trefle Pur. It’s rainy, but sunny out now so feels more springy than fall. And I’m a little bit headache-y an dthis one is light enough to not bother that.

Today I’ve got Atelier Cologne’s Rose Anonyme on one wrist, and Armani Prive Rose d’Arabie on the other. To my unschooled nose, the AC smells more incensey at this early stage, the AP sweeter/richer, but they seem fairly similar. I’m interested to see how they develop side-by-side.

Tommy Bahama Compass from a sample and it is fine if unremarkable and a little harsh. I had read it was a ringer for Terre d’Hermes and I can smell a connection, but definitely not a dupe.

I’m wearing L’Arte di Gucci edp. It was what I chose last night for an evening with friends and it smelled so wonderfully warm, enveloping and just plain gorgeous that I wore it again. It was a good choice since we had to take our tween son to his annual doctor’s appointment and he was less than happy and cooperative about it. So I’d just close my eyes, inhale and think about cocktail parties and not of grumpy, moody pubescent boys. I’m already wondering what aromatherapy I can employ when his twin sister goes in next week. *cringe* Maybe knockout drops. If I have to be conscious for that whole affair, it might be Fracas time or some other BWF along with lots and lots of patience.

It probably got too expensive to develop before all the “houses” decided to aim so high with prices. It would truly deserve the aspirational price it would have. I am lucky to have some. Thanks Mals!

I’m wearing a blast from the past today, Revlon’s Scoundrel. I seem to remember this coming out in the early ’80s. Revlon had a string of really nice drug store scents that came out around that time. Scoundrel was one of them. Short-lived, though, as I recall.

The bottle I have has gone off quite a bit. It took a good hour into wearing it before it started smelling like the scent I remember. I may just keep the bottle as a scent reference and not try to wear it again as so much has been lost. But it’s still nice to have it and remember a time when I was young and good scents could still be had at the CVS or Osco.

Mr. Ab. Scent really likes Ciara, which I think is by Revlon as well. It is very powdery with a good bit of wood and vanillaI don’t reach for it often, it can be quite the comfort scent if worn lightly. Some of my first perfumes were drugstore perfumes. Malibu Musk, Exclamation, Coty Wild Musk and Love’s Baby Soft were some of my favorites when I was eleven or twelve. :)

Oh, that takes me back. I used to wear Ciara long ago, and remember it as spicy and rather sweet, at least on me. I doubt I would have recognized wood in it back then, unschooled in perfumistahood as I was at the time.

Hmm. It seems like everybody above chose a very special scent today as a pick up against weather or some other kind of blahs.
I did the semi-random picking technique this morning and am wearing Bois Bleu (Cedar and Cedar). However, when I got to the office, my Cyber Monday package had arrived and there was a bottle of my beloved and delayed purchase Mono Di Orio Vetyver waiting (along with the Pachoulli Noir you guys helped me pick as an office gift).
No cheating and opening my Vetyver early but it would probably layer well with the cedar.

Tocade. sweet and perfume-y, but incredibly linear. Linear isn’t necessarily bad, I guess. But I keep thinking it would have been interesting to have something that has Tocade elements, but which evolves in phases.

Yesterday’s raves about Coromandel prompted me to pull out my decant and wear it today. I haven’t worn it in awhile but don’t remember it smelling much different today than when I initially tried it. Perhaps I just have a different ‘sniffer’ than those of you who commented on it, but my perceptions are rather different from yours. (I do love patchouli, by the way, and I also do love sweet, gourmand fragrances.) On me, Coromandel is a dry, herbal patchouli, with a tinge of incense. It doesn’t morph into anything else (I’ve been wearing it for hours), it’s not sweet, nor is it creamy. It doesn’t remind me at all of Angel – which is lush, rich, warm, redolent of chocolate and other notes besides the patch, it wraps around you like a blanket. Coromandel is, well, it’s just patch on me, nothing more, nothing less. And while I love patchouli, I guess I love patchouli AND . . . ., but this one has no AND for me. I prefer some of the other Exclusifs to this one.

I consider Clinique’s Aromatics to be a dry herbal patchouli – too dry and too herbal! Borneo is also dry but with a dark chocolate accord, and the patchouli in L’Orpheline I would also call relatively dry. Relative to them Coromandel is quite sweet and amber-y. More on the same page as Prada in which the dry patchouli seems to run parallel to the sweet amber. Coromandel is more blended and refined, but I’m still not a fan… I’m waiting for the right patchouli. One place I know has some Givenchy Gentleman, but no tester. Given my track record of predicting what I will like though, I’m too scared to go for it!

So I was perusing the Estee Lauder tester counter today and it was their normal fare (Modern Muse, Pleasures, White Linen, Beautiful, Youth Dew) – and behind the testers was a tray of really interesting and more difficult to find EL frags (well, for me anyway – I don’t know her line all that well) – it had Beyond Paradise, Bronze Goddess, Cinnabar, Intuition, Aliage, et al. et al. flankers of flankers! It looked like an unloved collection of testers sitting there since 1972 – man, did I want to steal that that tray! Alas, no. Anyhow, I had never tried Aliage, and it was freaking awesome – the original sports spray? Hmmmm – not so much….

I’m wearing a bunch of Rose Ikebana this evening. I like it a lot, but it has this perfume-y kick in the middle that grates on me for a bit, then everything is just swell as it dries down. Is that crinkly bit some Iso E Super or the citrus/rhubarb or what? Must know, must keep sniffing . . .
