Tuesday scent of the day 10/28

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2014 117 Comments

beets

Time marches on...it's the last Tuesday in October! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Demeter Beetroot. It isn't really as weird as it sounds...if you like any really vegetal iris scents and/or Demeter Dirt, or if you just love the smell of working in your vegetable garden in summer, you'd probably like Beetroot.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/31, for Halloween wear your quirkiest or weirdest or spookiest fragrance. The next week, 11/7, we're doing "down the rabbit hole Friday": wear the perfume that turned you into a perfumista (whatever that means to you).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

OOOOH. Maybe I’ll wear that today. Supposed to be in the 80s today here (SW VA), and I’m meeting my husband for lunch. It’s his birthday. :)

I’ll go with Tam Dao today. I’m trying to use up my decant because it has separated. Has anyone seen any good deals on this one lately? I so need a full bottle.

Those beets look lovely. I thought they were Lush bubble bars.

La Chasse Aux Papillons today. This comparatively lighter tuberose is one that I find more bearable and actually enjoy :)

If it came in less than 3 oz, it would be a no-brainer, but that large a bottle always seems like such a huge commitment, and I’m already so prone to neglecting bottles (and feeling guilty about it). It’s great, though. Maybe as it gets colder, my ability to justify it will increase.

Nothing yet… but last night I put on some vintage Michelle edt Balenciaga (mine is probably very early 80s)… I love it. I read a few reviews that compared it Giorgio and others in that ilk but considered it better constructed and not quite so obnoxious. I cannot stand Giorgio–never could, ever. I really do not think the comparison holds. Michelle is so pretty and sophisticated. I still smell the hints of its dry down on my wrists… but nothing anyone else would notice. It does have the 80s aldehydes upon applying—but fairly quickly I get a lovely, creamy tropical (a wee bit of coconut oil) gardenia scent, tempered by light spices. The scent makes me happy!

Wow, Robin! Interesting choice of fragrance. What is it about that fragrance that intrigues you? Just curious.
My SOTD is Tuberose Angelica from Jo Malone mixed with Orange Sanguine from Atelier. I don’t know why I decided to combine the two together, but it turned out quite nice on me.

How did I miss Beetroot? Gonna have to snag some of that and might as well just blind buy a bottle because Demeter = inexpensive enough to be worth the risk.
I’m giving Gaiac 10 another chance. I’ve sampled it a few times but this is the first time I’ve actually given it a good solid several-spray wearing. It’s much better this way and I’m actually rather enjoying it, keep getting whiffs of it and wondering who smells good. This is the second one I have done a 180 on lately, so apparently the key to Le Labos is wearing more than I think I need.

Doing my in depth testing of De Profundis today- no mixing and sniffing four different fumes for a while.

This thing is GORGEOUS! I liked it yesterday with a semi-spritz, but today it is full on beautiful with a hefty spritz. I don’t usually like floral dominant perfumes but this one is so elegant and restrained, not heavy and overbearing at all. It’s seems very diaphanous and delicate but has a definate presence.

I still haven’t put my finger on what it reminds me of but I don’t even care anymore- I feel like I could work some magic while wearing this!

Maybe this is the scent Angels wear while they are bee-bopping around heaven? :)

FYI- if anyone is a Bronze Goddess fan, Ulta had the body cream on-line at 20% off (they also have the edt).

The body cream is wonderful and very moisturizing and heavily scented- you don’t even need to layer with the EDT after application of body cream. No affiliation with either EL or ulta- just wanted to pass on a good deal for those interested:)

        Oh, get it!

It’s really wonderful! I got a 2ml spritz decant and I’m pretty sure I will be getting a large-ish decant as soon as I blow through this.

Don’t you know I fall for the unobtainable ones- I would love to have this in the typical SL export bottle. I don’t know why he tortures us like this! ;)

It’s a very worthwhile frenzy, IMHO. I found all the reviews intriguing and even though I thought I was pretty “anti-floral” this is fantastic- it has an interesting duality- floral but not big and overblown, delicate but with a cast iron backbone.

Even if you end up not liking it, I think it’s unusual and worth getting a sample of just to get your nose on. :)

I wouldn’t classify myself as a perfumista though- I like the smell of everything- horses, horse poop, barns, my dogs paws, corn on the cob when freshly pulling off the husk, salt flats when the tide is way out, you name it…I like to smell it :)

I am wearing Coromadel again today because it is a gorgeous mid-50’s, sunny fall day. I wore a lost sample of Bel Respiro last night. It was gorgeous but dabbing from a tiny sample wasn’t enough; not sure if it is really faint or just needs a good spray.

Here is an oddball bit of fragrance news. According to Fox Sports, the Kansas City Royals Baseball team (with one exception) has been wearing “Victorias Secret” perfume for luck during this post-season.
Of course, some player could have been putting the sportscasters on. Based upon their commentary, the sportscasters would not know a Victoria’s Fragrance scent from Geranium Pour Monsieur

From Sports Illustrated about the Royals:

“By the way, Escobar, the one who introduced catcher Salvador Perez to playing with women’s perfume, is choosing to play with a spritz of men’s cologne these days. It’s Spirit Millionaire, about $21 a bottle, with top notes of bergamot, cardamom, tangerine and green apple. “http://www.si.com/mlb/2014/10/26/three-strikes-world-series-game-4-san-francisco-giants-kansas-city-royals

Mary Greenwell Plum today–sunny and warm (mid-80’s); clear blue sky; palm trees show a bit of air stirring outside; work going smoothly; dipping into my lunch a tad early today. Ahhhh. Happy me, happy me. (Although, gotta admit, the pessimist in me sorta fears such good days–who knows what is lurking around the bend to smack this happiness right out of me?!!!)

Wearing AG Nuit Etoilee from my pretty newly acquired bottle. If anyone wants a lovely blue bottle (since now all the bottles are clear), there are lots and lots of them on ebay, both masculine and feminine for very cheap. Today I’m wearing Annick Goutal La Violette. It’s a very lovely, delicate violet. It smells like a violet pastille, with a little bit of greenery. It’s light, and I suspect it will be just about gone by the time I leave for work, so it may be Temps d’Une Fete this afternoon.

Do you know if that candle is very true to scent? If so, I may have to find me a good violet scent! (I recently sampled Blanc Violette but it wasn’t very good and I have no idea if it smells like Violet or not.)

Rumba is totally huge. I struggle a little bit with the stewed fruits up top, but I really love it when it gets to the early part of the drydown because it smells like hot dust. You know, like when you turn the heat on in the house for the first time since spring? Or turn on a lamp that has been idle long enough to gather dust (wait, maybe I am outing my housekeeping inadequacies…).

I actually love that smell and find Rumba very cozy for a winter bedtime scent.

Had a job interview near Barney’s earlier today and stopped to spritz L’incendiare again. I wish I didn’t like this so much – smoky, woody deliciousness. I’m hoping someone with greater knowledge than I will eventually smell it and tell us all that something – anything! – cheaper is a dupe.

And I would think that samples are that much more expensive, huh? I am sure it can’t be the only thing that smells like it – I’m just too new to perfuminess to be able to say what might be similar. Have to drag my local fumie buddies over there again sometime soon and see what they say upon second sniff.

My dearest – get your gorgeous self over to Kafka’s blog to read up on her take on this. I got a sample from Barneys and will admit that I do like the perfume but not at that pricepoint. This perfume is definitely a cousin of Fille en Aiguilles and now all I have to do is to see which ones of my other perfumes will round it out.

My sotd is an intriguing mix from opposite ends of the price spectrum. A couple generous sprays of vintage Joy edt over B&BW Forever Red Vanilla Rum. I don’t know what possessed me to try it but the bottles were sitting near each other on my dresser since I hadn’t put either one back in the cabinet yet and I thought,”Why not?” If floral gourmands are your thing, it actually works quite well and is warm and comfortable on a day where the temperature is rapidly dropping. The Joy takes some of the synthetic sweet edge off the FRVR, and the FRDR makes the Joy more of a cuddle up with someone for a good book and warm drink kind of perfume rather than one for special occasions out.

OT, but for anyone who doesn’t hate the original VW Princess *ducks tomatoes*, has it been reformulated dramatically in the last few years? My original bottle is very nearly gone and Macy’s no longer carries it when I stopped by to test the current formulation. Thanks and sorry for the long post and off topic-ness. :)

I wear Boucheron at least once a week! I didn’t think I would like it so much. I feel sort of complete when I have it on, and it makes my clothes fit better. Really…

Kelly Caleche here for Kelly! It’s…..nice! Just sprayed it on, so I’m still working through the top notes.

I do need to say: I sent an email to Hermes asking for a sample of Kelly Caleche (I figured, hey, it might be worth a shot!). Not only did Hermes send me a large 2mL spray sample, they sent me 7 OTHER LARGE 2 mL SAMPLES of various scents, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil [3!], Jour d’Hermes and Jour d’Hermes Absolu, Voyage d’Hermes, Kelly Caleche, and Caleche! What wonderful customer service! I’m feeling the need to pass some of the love on, in the spirit of the love I have felt during the last perfume swap, and also from Hermes’ generosity — I already have some Un Jardin Sur le Nil, and I just need one additional spray for when I run out, as I don’t use it that often. If it’s okay, Robin, I’d like to send the other 2 Un Jardin samples to a new home! Please be the first to comment here (first come, first serve!) and then email me at kgoodw2 at hotmayl dot com with your address if interested. Thanks!

Hello Kelly. How generous of you! And Hermes, too. I’ve never tried UJSLN (but have always been curious, especially with the notes) and would be willing to help with shipping if you like as well. Email to follow if that’s okay and thanks for the heads’ up on Hermes…

What a terrific testimonial for Hermes customer service!

I like Kelly Caleche too – well, in the edp I do. I found the edt too vegetal for me, but the edp suits my floralated tastes.

I absolutely LOVE Hermes for that. The first time I ever went into a boutique I was a little intimidated…they are so chi-chi and I am so not. They treated me like royalty though, and sent me off with my little 50 ml bottle of Eau des Merveilles along with 32 ml of free samples. Another time, my “gift with purchase” was a 12 ml mini of Jour d’Hermes Absolu plus 2 ml of Caleche extrait and 5 ml of Caleche EDP just to compare, along with some other samples. They must be the only house left that one doesn’t have to leg wrestle to get a sample!

Unintentionally supporting the spooky/weirdoes theme this week with an accidental splash of DelRae Mythique on one hand, and a tiny bit of Chergui on the other. Making decants. Vegetal and background-haunting with a splash of cigar-spice? Unlikely bedfellows and all that. Also I might be allergic to all the rain here in Vancouver right now. What could I possibly put on deliberately, later that will smooth this situation out?

So gorgeous. And my bottle (a partial one that a friend found at an estate sale for $45!!) is only EdT, but it laaaaaaasts. All day.

Sure don’t make ’em like they used to. This fragrance always makes me think of a string of pearls.

Sweet Anthem Ella. Lots of clove but the “candlesmoke” note keeps it from becoming too foody. Lovely.

I liked that one too. Unfortunately, I think it’s the only one that has grabbed me and since I never got my fall samples that went astray in the mail, I haven’t sampled too extensively.

I was bracing for a second day of server nightmares, so I went for comfort with Shalimar Ode a la Vanille, with a touch of 1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire added for good measure. They work nicely together.

Luckily the server nightmares got solved this morning so it hasn’t been so bad.

I’m also doing mystical and magical scents this week as prelude to Halloween. Today’s choice is Cartier’s Le Baiser du Dragon soft body milk. Lots of smoky vetiver/cedar in this form, not as much amaretto/floral as in the edp, yet somewhat milder than the body creme, nice for a quiet day spent at home. Le Baiser seems to be such a hate-it-or-love-it scent, I never wear it indoors when I’m around people. The body creme is my favorite for a cold spring or fall day when I’m attending an outside event like a ballgame. I love how its scent wafts up through several layers of clothing and warms me!

Playing it safe with SL Clair de Musc. My trouble with dabbing is that I tend to under-apply, so the scent is gone in a whiff…

Atelier’s Trefle Pur today. It’s really rainy and dreary in Seattle today (shocking!), and I wanted something green and citrusy.

I just received a sample of Demeter Beet Root, but haven’t tried it yet. I ordered 10 samples and got the free bottle of Dandelion. The Demeters don’t last long on me at all, but that suits me. Sometimes I just want a “scent experience” and then I want it to go away. The price is just right for this. :)

Wore Coco EDT earlier today, and this evening I put on some Dia Woman, which I just received as a .33 ounce travel refill for a great price from FragranceNet.

I reminds me of how my mother used to smell when going out for the evening in the late fifties, early sixties. Just lovely!

I don’t remember why I liked Coco EdP more but I bought it and haven’t tried EdT since then. Do you think they are different enough to use both?

I love Dia! I still have about 5 ml left in my decant but maybe I need that travel spray anyway… :)

Yes, at least check it out! It comes in a lovely rose gold bottle but is splash not spray, if that matter to you. I’ll probably decant some into a small sprayer.

I love the Coco Extrait but am not as familiar with the EDP. I think it is a bit harder to find than the EDT, or perhaps I’m thinking of No. 19!

I wore Chanel No.5 EDP, even though I was just babysitting. I have no where fancy to go, but I have have fancy perfume so I have to wear it somewhere ;) Also, the little girl remarked that her baby brother “smelled like me” after holding him all day.

    SOTD = SL Boxeuses

It’s sweet, plummy, incensey, leathery goodness. I have a Bell Jar and have transferred some to an atomizer as I like to spray vs. dab. Undina’s post inspired me to wear this.
