Tuesday scent of the day 10/21

Posted by Robin on 21 October 2014 123 Comments

Old Spice Man on a horse

Do share your scent of the day if you have a free minute or two.

I'm wearing Old Spice. I always forget how long Old Spice has been around: it launched in 1937, the same year as Schiaparelli Shocking and Lanvin Pretexte and Lancôme Peut-Être. I wish the Old Spice folks would do a luxury version (not too luxury, just maybe spend some money on the raw materials) and I wish they'd bring back the Old Spice Man.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/24, we're doing Gender Wars: wear something marketed to your gender opposite, with partial credit for wearing something marketed as unisex.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Me too! We are scent twins. My husband loves this and I am almost out of my (small) FB. I am thinking I will get a variety of Iris samples to test when this runs out. Right now my list of samples to obtain is Bois Iris, Iris Poudre, Scent of Hope. Any other suggestions? I am also going to get a sample of Jardins Armide, although that is not an iris perfume.

I realised I’ve been neglecting my decants, hence New Look 1947 today. There’s just so many samples and decants, and new things to try, that there just isn’t time to love them all!

I’m wearing CdG Black. After the fall incense post reminded me of it I used up the rest of my sample and got a decant, and today I’m even wearing it (sparingly) to work.

I’m curious about this one…I’m on the fence about incense although I have tried Avignon, and others in the CdG incense line and liked them, but they just don’t seem to last on me. How it the staying power of Black?

I am going with either Infusion d’Iris or Zagorsk today. Yes, a sort of wimpy iris and a hissy, incensey iris. But I am leaning to Zagorsk because I like my iris to be carroty and hissy.

Wearing vintage Oscar de la Renta from my own wavy bottle that’s been in the family, oh, since the 1980s. This is a powerhouse scent – I’m marinating today. But it is a lovely green, soft tuberose… about as much tuberose as I can take. RIP Oscar de la Renta.

I would love to try a luxury version of Old Spice. That could have signature scent potential for me.

My scent of the day is Demeter Wet Garden — very grassy at first with a slightly spicy hyacinth. It dries down to hyacinth soap, but it’s not soapy. I brought the rollerball to work so that I can reaply surreptitiously.

My dad wore Old Spice when I was growing up, and only stopped wearing it maybe ten years ago, when it no longer smelled good to him. It does smell considerably cheaper and thinner to me than it used to, so a version that put some cash into the raw materials would certainly be *very* welcome. It was good stuff.

Gray chilly autumn here, but the dry leaves outside smell wonderful. I’m in SSS Tabac Aurea, as I love it best in fall and need to take the opportunities to wear it as they come, before the weather changes again.

I love old spice. I would buy a luxery version … SOTD is JCrew #57. Bought a sweater yesterday and threw a card sprayed with #57 in the bag … My sweater is very strongly scented. Smells good.

I was in San Francisco over the weekend, and I scored some samples from saks and nordstroms. So happy!!! Was surprised with the generous samples from Saks, I got maybe 2-3 mL each of Tuscan Leather and Tobacco Vanille :)

I was surprised to enjoy Tuscan Leather so much. Tobacco Vanille is very… hmm… thick, but once it’s been on me for 8 hours or so it has the most wonderful vanilla drydown, not smoky or sweet or powdery, just the nicest “clear” translucent vanilla I’ve ever experienced. Don’t really like it much up to that point, though, so I don’t think there’s any point in my getting more than a sample.

SOTD is Lubin Black Jade. I had a couple of samples lying around. I really like this one. Somehow it’s cinnamon and sweet tobacco on me with a hint of floral. Requires further wearing……

I love Old Spice. Just bought my 13 YO original Old Spice shower gel. I’ve been following him, sniffing. He likes their new ‘fresh’ line though….Denali. Eh.

“Champion” for my man too! I wanted to see if they had just an original Old Spice shower gel but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Not that I could find. So I went with “Champion” because it sounded less absurd than “Swag.” Although I have to say I was tempted by “Bearglove.” Either way, the “Champion” is great and I get to use it sometimes too! :-)

Makes me smile to see the love so many of us have for Old Spice – definitely an overlooked classic.

Today I’m in Patchouli Intense by Parfums de Nicolaï. I’ve now drained two spray sample vials, so I need to seek out a split (perfectly poor timing on my part to realize I want it only after the splitmeet ends…) or even twist my own arm into just getting a 30ml bottle.

I abandoned my outdoorsy theme to wear L’Artisan Passage D’Enfer, because I discovered last night that it’s the very first incense fragrance my SO has liked.

I also keep getting a whiff of the card I sprayed with Pharrell Williams’ Girl a few weeks ago. The scent is still going [quite] strong, and it’s perfuming my desk very nicely. I can’t remember if I liked it this much when I first sprayed it, but it smells like wet, crushed grass now, which puts a little nature back in my day.

1937 Old Spice was launched, wow, that’s just amazing. It’s been some time since I’ve had a whiff of this classic. One of those rare fragrances that you can find just about anywhere.. I think I’ve actually seen it stocked in the grocery store somewhere.

Have you tried Eau Duelle EdT? If yes, do you smell a lot of difference between two concentrations of this one? With Volutes I prefer EdT but with Eau Duelle I haven’t tried the EdP version so I don’t know if it’s true for all Diptyque’s perfumes.

I have smelled both. The Eau Duelle EDT is syrupy on me, but thin. It doesn’t have the body I enjoy in a vanilla. The EDP is closer to Guerlain Spiriteuse (sp!!) Double Vanille, with a nice green quality which I dint notice in the EDT.

Funny, because I prefer the EDT of Volutes, because the rich fruit of the EDP is not to my taste.

So yes, I definitely recommend sampling.

What a small world it truly is, your family experience was the same as mine. Mom wore Oscar for a while and bought me Ruffles when it came out.

How disappointing that they axed it because of the chips. Surely they could have come up with a name change rather than let it go. Unless, of course, it was a legal agreement between the two brands.

I have a tiny amount of vintage Estée Lauder Knowing EDP — original 1988 vintage! — and I wore a couple of drops today. It’s SO GOOD, a kind of idealized floral chypre that doesn’t know if it’s masculine or feminine so it cleanly splits the difference (one of the original ads had Paulina Porizkova looking no-nonsense in a menswear tux, which tells you everything you need to know). The stuff they’re calling Knowing these days can’t compare in any way.

Old Spice is genius. Funny how it stuck around for so long that it became kind of a punchline. It’s cheap, yes, but it’s great cheap. A lot more men could stand to smell like it (and a fair few women too).

Today I woke up with yet another cold, so wanted something I could smell. So it was Montale Patchouli Leaves under EL Sensuous Noir. From what I can make out, it is a lovely combination though I think the SN is wrestling PL to the ground, twisting it’s arm behind it’s back and forcing it to say ‘Uncle’ because I can barely smell it when it can usually take over a room with ease if not carefully applied. It will be fun to try and get the balance right when not olfactorily challenged. ;)

My Sephora order came today so I’m wearing Kate Walsh’s Boyfriend in the dry body oil. It’s discontinued but somehow they must have had some random stock to clear out so I dove in and cleared them out (only two bottles, but still). I only have a 5ml sample spray of the actual perfume but so far I’m pretty happy with the body oil’s strength.

The perfume may have gotten away from me from a price perspective (aka how can I pay more for a celebrity perfume than I would for Chanel?! eBay has gone mad), but maybe I’ll luck into a bottle some day! It’s so comforting but also a bit cologne-sharp and I’m just totally addicted.

I also got an atomizer so now I want to pick out something to keep in my purse – geez, how to narrow it down?!

And Billionaire Boyfriend is just…vaguely insulting on several levels.

I had a decant of boyfriend that I wore regularly to bed, I got addicted to it a bit :)

haha, I’ve never smelled BB (I don’t think it officially came to Canada but I’m not sure), but I’ve seen some ad copy that definitely made me roll my eyes! Doesn’t look like it’s as interesting as the original, either, which is a shame. Brings to mind Sarah Jessica Parker who always looked like she was pushed into the fruity floral direction for better profits.

Going to enjoy my addiction through these two bottles of oil, though! :)

I’m testing Ann Gerard Rose Cut. It’s nice but I think I still like Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin better. Still haven’t found my perfect rose.

Have you tried Mohur? How about Miss Charming? Tauer’s roses?

I like La Fille de Berlin a lot but haven’t tried Rose Cut yet.

I like Fille de Berlin more than Rose Cut as well. I actually am quite in love with Fille de Berlin but also have a bottle of Miss Charming. The two are very similar, but the Miss Charming doesn’t have that metallic edge that’s in Fille de Berlin, which makes them very different. I love them both!

Rose Cut seemed watery. SL Fille was very metallic on skin. Will have to try again.

My dad wore Old Spice so it conjures warm memories for me although I haven’t smelled it in years, so I don’t know how good the current version might be. SOTD is Vanille 44. I don’t care for the opening much but after an hour it’s a warm non-sweet vanilla on me. Probably never use up the decant, though, as I like many vanillas.

I was searching for my decant of Tea for Two but couldn’t find it, but I did find Theorema, so I’m wearing that. Nice on a cool, gray day.

A luxury version of Old Spice would be wonderful! Just looked up Isaiah Mustafa, and it appears that I’ve missed the “internetervention” series on YouTube. Must catch up! He was the best thing ever to happen to Old Spice. ♥

Wearing Rose d’Amour by Les Parfums de Rosine. SF Barneys doesn’t carry this brand any longer and it makes me sad since I like the brand and it will be much harder for me now to test their new creations.

Parfums de Rosine seems to have dropped off the perfumista radar lately – seems like their latest offerings have been less interesting, perhaps. Or so it seems to me. Still adore Rose d’Ete.

Lipstick Rose. Oversprayed in the morning, and it felt like a dozen cats were attacking me for an hour or so. Still going strong as the night falls. I really like LR, but overspraying it can be bad, I realize.

Missed you guys! Work has been nuts, so I peek at the blogs when I have a sec, but no responses. Just reading about what you’re wearing gets me out of the work mode and brings a smile. Thinking of the Old Spice Man, and my grandpa, who wore Old Spice is just as great.

CdG/Pharrell’s Girl for me today, and I’ve worn it three days straight. Slightly weird, violet leaf and woods. Fun. Be well

AG’s Eau de Camille for me. It seemed like a nice, quiet green scent, crisp enough for the cool air outside. I REALLY want to try my sample of Zagorsk, but it’s so tiny, I am saving it for a really cold day. It seems like others here agree that it’s best when worn in the cold.

SOTD is a continuation of my SOTheYesterday: don’t ask: a much delayed red eye flight and jet lag means I arrived home and was in and out of a slumber all day and now still in the same T shirt I wore on the flight. It is Musc Ravageur and the real upside of my upside down body rhythm at the moment is that I am getting to experience the evolution of Musc Ravageur. It just gets better and it does not go away! I was going to post yesterday that it has a hint of Old Spice ( a VERY luxe version of Old Spice, if you like). But it develops a bit away from Old Spice’s slight screechiness (though I would love to own a bottle of OS!). Sadly, my Musc R carded sample is coming to an end …

So late today. Robin, I love Old Spice – so many good memories of my dad. Sadly the new versions in body wash etc. are unbearable. Spent a year weaning my son away to a neutral version, the Anthony for Men line.

Today is an Amouage Fate day; love it. Tried SL L’Orpheline yesterday and had to scrub repeatedly with Dawn dish soap to get it off. Horrifying. Must be loaded with Iso Super E. Will have to take my coat to the cleaner’s.

Commando, because you old hands may not believe this but I’ve used up every single decant I like, and I don’t want to wear anything I own from a full bottle for fear of resenting/underappreciating them for being not quite right for today. Waiting on a really tardy tax return, when I will go hard with a list I have been sculpting and resculpting to fit the meagre fume budget. Anticipation is better than receiving, right? During WW2 the undernourished Yoko Ono and her brother would describe elaborate meals to each other. I read perfume blogs.

I love Old Spice. My dad keep some of his grandfather’s old Old Spice bottles in the basement by his desk and they are in these fabulous, heavy glass bottles. They have got to be at least 50 years old, but you can still smell the scent when you sniff the caps. No SOTD for me, I took the day off because I’m sick, so I’m just taking it easy.
