Tuesday scent of the day 9/23

Posted by Robin on 23 September 2014 135 Comments

cinnamon sticks

Do tell us your fragrance of the day if you have a free moment.

I've started in on the Serge Lutens...I'm wearing Rousse.

Reminder: this Friday, 26 September, will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing a big splash from a huge vintage Caleche EdT bottle I found antiquing yesterday. 200ml unopened for $16! It isn’t quite my thing but maybe I can swap some during the swap meet.

I also acquired maybe 30ml of Eau de Cologne Imperiale for $9. And it’s dated 1970. I put on a hefty splash last night and loved it.

Great finds! I love finding things like that. I haven’t gone to any antique shops in a while. There is one in particular where I’ve had pretty good luck. I resisted going in last time I was in the area.

It’s officially fall in the Rockies. Nights are cool and crisp while the days are still warm-hot. Hard to dress correctly for a full day away from home unless you layer up (or down) as the day progresses.

I’m wearing biehl.parfumkunstwerke’s Egon Oehlkers 01 today because we’re going through a tough stretch at work (downsizing ๐Ÿ™ ) and I needed a comfort scent. As someone who didn’t get the memo on Organza Indecence until it was discontinued, pricey and hard to find, I think EO01 is its long lost sibling. It has that same incredible cashmere wrap comfort ambiance going on, but it is slightly more complex, I think, and more artsy, if you will. This is one of the handful of scents I sprung for a full bottle of upon an hour of wearing the sample. Lovely, warm and comforting.

Thank you, my friend, for your kind thoughts. Honestly? I don’t know yet. They have told us they will be finished with all the cuts by the end of Q1 15 but that they are starting immediately. So it looks like anywhere between 1 day and 6 months before we’ll know who goes and who stays. My fingers are crossed!

And yes, stress is always alleviated by smelling as good as one possibly can! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ve tested the EO 01, and I totally agree – its like a cross between Organza Indecence and that Luctor & Emergo…. It’s been a long time since I smelled it, but it does have a very comforting vibe. Also, best wishes and much good luck on the company downsizing. I am also looking down the mouth of the beast and it is very frightening to either be destabilized or work with long time colleagues who will be.

Iโ€™m very sorry about what you are going through, Teri and AnnS. Youโ€™re in my thoughts during this difficult time, and I agree that mindfulness meditation can reduce stress. The EO 01 sounds nice. I like their Al02 (the spicy and fruity one).

I think Robin mentioned that there might be travel bottles of DelRaes available in the future. That would be awesome. Oddly I would like some in the rollerball (Amoureuse, Bois de Paradis) and some in the spray (Panache, Wit).

Dune! Sometimes it is rather dry on me, but today I am getting more floral in the middle – 5 hours! – than usual.

It’s funny how we seem to gravitate to a house. I have a lot of Patricia de Nicholai… great scents, nice size, at a terrific price. It doesn’t surprise me.

That would be great poll question – what house do you gravitate to? What house do you have the most scents?

I’m also surprised at the number of Diors I have. The Dior aesthetic in general strikes me as an opulent glamour which is most Definitely not me. But I do prefer the fullness of their scents to the understated restraint of Chanel.

I have a rotation of right now, 9 perfumes that I wear pretty much one right after the other. That way I never have the same scent on on the same day of the week or similar circumstance. Does anyone else do this, I wonder? Have a pattern of how you chose what to wear?

I don’t have a pattern, exactly, but I seldom wear the same thing two days in a row (funny, because I spent about 15 years wearing nothing but Jil Sander 4). I usually gauge my scent by the weather forecast, and today Oregon decided to go all-in on autumn – it’s rainy and cool, after a 90-degree weekend – and I’m wearing Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile.

Mereditay, what other Dior fragrances do you rotate through? Dune doesn’t seem to work on me, but I love Escale a Portofino (and am giving a little sample to a friend today because she loves it on me and wants to try it).

Still deciding which of my samples next to my computer I’ll be wearing today, BUT – I ordered the Ormonde Jayne discovery set (I think Hajusuuri suggested it a while ago) for my upcoming birthday, and I am sooooo excited! There have been far too many good reviews for me not to give them a try, and it doesn’t hurt that they’ll come in a pretty box too…

As for today’s samples, I’ve landed on Osmanthus Interdite on one arm and Paul and Joe Bleu on the other.

I like Rousse. Got a sample somewhere… it’s unusual, I think, to find a spicy fragrance that doesn’t also go deep into Oriental or amber territory, which is sort of verbotenland for me (‘scuse the made-up German, sorry). I don’t mind spicy woods, but I can’t do stuff like Opium and Cinnabar. Let’s see, Rousse and Organza Indecence, Smell Bent One and CSP L’eau du Gouverneur… what else?

No SOTD yet. Was thinking of Jolie Madame, but now pondering spices. And maybe Uncle Serge’s Fleurs d’Oranger, which is very tubey to my nose (my sample is post-refo, with no discernible cumin).

I’m in an iris mood and selected Iris Poudre today.

Still trying to decide on Uncle Serge day but as I seem to be wearing florals this week, it may be Fleur d’Oranger. If it cools off, though, I may need to break out the Chergui.

For Uncle Serge day I can choose from A la nuit, Un bois vanille, De profundis, MKK, or Sarrasins. I have no idea which I’ll pick.

Today I put on Missoni. Not the Lucas Turin 5star rated Missoni from 1982, which I love, but the 2006 Missoni, which I also love. It is a perfect transitional scent for the first day of Autumn. Of course, it’s going to get into the 80s today, but it started out in the 60s so Missoni works. To my nose the first blast of scent that I get is almost cucumbery, but then it moves to a sweet, almost chocolate note that is also rather floral. Perfect.

Diptyque Eau Duelle EDP today. Just felt vanilla this morning, you know?

Was just trying to recall when I got into fragrance for real, and I think it started early last winter. Which is fun, because this is my first summer fall transition.

Prada Infusion D’Iris, which I haven’t touched in ages. Got a “Wow, you smell nice!” this morning from my husband. Weirdly, I was a bit anosmic to this scent about a year ago, but now I find it very accessible and distinct–elegant even.

SOTD is Signature Collection Vanilla Coconut fragrance mist by Bath and Body Works. It is a fragrance mist that smells good and lasts all day. Cheap and cheerful (the fragrance, not me ๐Ÿ™‚ )

That’s the way I felt about the VS Vanilla Lace- before they turned it into the current version of yuck. Loved that stuff back in the 90’s! Cheap and cheerful is a great combo ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, VS Vanilla Lace was good in the 90s. I first smelled it over 20 years ago when I was standing in line, with several bags of books, at the annual Friends of the Library used book sale. The woman in front of me smelled wonderful, and I asked her what she was wearing and it was Vanilla Lace. I wore it a lot in my youth.

Fragrantica says that its from the 2000s, but it’s way older than that. I have not smelled it since the reformulation.

I needed a little extra something-something today, so I’m wearing the TM Alien Essence Absolue. Yummers! I will concede that this frag can be a monster. Just the smallest squirt will do me for hours. If I put on too much, it’s a powerful cloud.

I love this one but can only wear it in cold weather, otherwise it seems much too strong. Maybe I should try dabbing rather than spraying?

I think I must be lucky b/c the bottle I have puts out a very tiny little squirt. I don’t know if they are all like that, but it makes it really easy to control. Thank god!

I bought AEA for my birthday yesterday, but have not yet opened it. Sometimes I adore it, but there have been times, in testing that I have found it too buxom.

If I decide not to keep it I could exchange it by paying in for a Montale or otherwise Dior’s Cuir Cannage. It is a discount store so these perfumes are not nearly as pricey as they are at ordinary retail.

It was unusually cool when I woke up this morning, so I went with Chergui. It’s supposed to be back up in the 80s this afternoon, but whatever. Around here you can basically define Fall as temps consistently below 90. I oversprayed and just about gassed myself out, but it’s fine now.

Sweetgrass, do you find Chegui has a lot of overlap with Bulgari Black?

You know.. I’d always thought of Chergui and Black as completely different things, but now that you mention it, I can see where you might find some overlap between the two. I’ve never smelled them side-by-side to compare, but now I’m curious. I think the similarity is in the sweeter notes. Chergui doesn’t have the rubbery, creosote-ish quality to me that Black does.

I’v never done a side by side either but I would characterize Black as a floral rubber scent and Chergui as tobacco, hay and amber. The overlap is on the vanilla. If that helps at all?

This week’s theme seems to be perfumes I love but can’t justify buying. Today I’m wearing L’Artisan Safran Troublant. It’s so delicious and luxurious–a little sweet and totally creamy and soft.

My office is cold so it seems to cryogenically preserve fragrances, and four hours later, I can still smell it, but this is an anomaly. If only I could trust it to last all day.

Wearing AA Mandarine Basilic today. No fall here in San Diego, where we’ve had the hottest summer in a very long time and it’s still going strong. At least it has cooled off a little. Got some not so great health news for my husband (nothing life-threatening! it’s more you better make some changes now!) which will require lots of food/lifestyle changes for us, so I wanted a happy familiar fragrance.

I’m in the Midwest for a month, helping my mom… Brought a few favorite decants and a handful of samples to try. Today was umber by dsh/beaux arts. It’s a manufacturer’s sample, but smells nothing like what i guessed from the name. A little bit of dirt, but a lot of sour chypre. Now that it’s a couple of hours in, it’s calmed quite a bit, but there’s something unpleasant and musty going on. Anyone familiar with this scent? Was the wrong vial attached to this card? I’ll switch it later for necessary mood elevation…

Went back and reread the Lucas Turin review, which does indeed refer to the 2006 version. The next review, of Missoni Aqua, intrigued me, so I’ll have to also give that one a try.

I have been confused about this for years. Until recently, I was sure LT was talking about the 1982 version, because a) the 1982 bottle seemed like the “poverty stricken” one and b) his description of what Missoni smells like does not match the 2004 version, which is obviously bitter chocolate ad melon. Nonetheless, I recently realized that since he emphasizes Roucel, he has to be talking about the 2004 version. It’s bizarre!

I like Aqua, too. It’s sort of the same fragrance with a different balance.

Looks like lots of us are starting the SL day early–I’m making it a week of SOTEs, and a few SOTDs. Today was Sa Majeste La Rose, yesterday was Encens et Lavande. There are too many to wear, and many are too big for my scent phobic office. We’ll see what I can discreetly dab ๐Ÿ˜‰

My SOTD is a Tale of Two Bois: Bois Farine layered generously with Un Bois Vanille.

My pristine bottle of BF has been sitting in its box collecting strata of dust next to my copy of Ulysses for about three years: both difficult to digest! I find that the sweetness of BV tones down the sweaty and spicy, cumin (gag gag) note in BF.

The final concoction is vaguely reminiscent of Jeux de Peau.
