What's your fragrance today?
I'm wearing the lovely light vetiver from Paul Smith, Story. Great scent, perfect book-inspired packaging (there are even ridges down the top and sides for "pages"), sadly discontinued.
Reminder: tomorrow, wear something discontinued. The following Friday, 26 September, will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows two of six limited edition Paul Smith scarves showcasing Led Zeppelin album covers. Due to launch in October, 50 of each were made.
SOTD is Royal Oud (Creed).
Terribly behind on Creed so have not smelled it!
Just about to apply some Penhaligon’s Bluebell before I go to vote in the Scottish independence referendum!
How exciting! Hope you don’t have horrendous lines.
I didn’t have to queue, although the overall voter turnout was exceptionally high, which is a good thing – & thankfully the result was what I had hoped for.
My husband and I just spent 2 weeks in Scotland (cruising Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal). We heard lots of info on the vote while we were there. We’re eagerly awaiting the results even here in the US.
I hope you had a lovely time, Kelly Red. We’re heading over to Seattle in a month’s time to see friends & do touristy type things as it’ll be my husband’s first time there.
I’m teleworking so it’s a crazy day: l’Artisan Voleur de Roses on one arm and ELdO Rossy de Palma on the other.
Who’s winning? 😉
Um, neither, I think? *ducks*
🙂
SOTD is Chanel Sycomore. It felt like a vetiver kind of day …
And of course you smell great!
I am scentless today. I’m fighting through a cold right now so I didn’t see much point in putting on a perfume. I was just wondering if anyone has tried Pharrel Williams Girl yet.
Hope you’re better soon! I have smelled it on paper but have not had time to put on skin yet…hope to review it next week.
Thanks.
I tried it a couple of days ago. I have somewhat forgotten already how it started out, but it was a little harsh. It got softer and was very green to me after about 10 minutes. I’m afraid I wasn’t crazy about it. Reviews on Sephora haven’t been favorable, so not a hit with the general public, but perfumistas might like it pretty well. Bottle was very cute.
I smelled it on a blotter at Sephora yesterday. I didn’t care for it much. I got a lot of violet leaf in it, which is a tough note for me. It reminded me a lot of DSquared HeWood.
SOTD is No 5 eau Premiere. I need a little sparkle today!
Hope it’s working!
Yes – some days are really a struggle to get it together at work, but I am diligently working through my to-do list and smelling good in the process.
BTW – Led Zeppelin scarfs? Whaa? I’m trying to get my husband to learn the Lemon Song on his bass. He’s like, Oh, Ann – come on! He’s not quite there yet. 😉
LOL! Betcha those are going to cost a fortune, but don’t know the price.
I want one. There’s probably Hermes priced though.
I’m on the discontinued train a day early too in Cartier So Pretty.
Was no hardship to do a whole week, and I could probably keep at it for some time…I’m shocked at how much of what’s in my cabinet is discontinued.
Never even smelled So Pretty!
It is, as the name implies, really pretty! Wish I had a full bottle.
Oh, I love So Pretty! It is one of my fav rose scents. And I got it together when I knew it was going to be DISC. I have three bottles. Ah, my precious!
How smart of you! I only tried it *after* it was already discontinued, and waited too long to find a bottle. I do have a decant, which is dwindling, le sigh
I’m sure I can help you out if you ever need it for a decant. There are also still reasonably priced bottles on ebay. A few years ago, the price had spiked, but it’s in normal orbit now. Just tuck this away in the future file. 😉
I have a mini of So Pretty and wish I had a FB. It’s lovely. It belongs to a cathegory in my mind called “structured simplicity”.
Sampling SSS Rose Volupte which has too much wine for me.
Went sampling this afternoon so I tried Intoxicated which is lots of cardamom on me and Parfumerie Moderne Desamant which is a slightly leathery lilac. Fabulous.
Musc Nomade, which no one seems to wear.
I wear it from time to time, was looking at the bottle just the other day… 🙂
I have the body products- this line is so lush! I don’t have any of the perfume though so I wear the products with Musc Ravageur.
Had a sample, tried it, could not smell it. It was my first anosmic experience, I think.
Me too! I got a whole nose full of nothing!
That is always the risk with musks. I can smell it really well. Probably my favourite musk perfume.
SOTD SSS Forest Walk- so cool and refreshing on a hot humid day. Takes me back to hiking with my dogs in the NC mountains along streams and rivers.
It makes my soul happy 🙂
I’ve been going through my samples lately and just realized I have a sample of this one. Can’t wait to try it out!
I hope you like it! A very teensy bit goes a long way and lasts FOREVER! I have a 17ml bottle and I depress the atomizer not even half way to get a little mini spritz that keeps me smelling good for 12-14 hours- fantastic juice!
SSS Forest Walk is one of my favorites!
Today was a beautiful spring day and it was my first wearing of Wit, from a decant. This is beautiful! I’m thinking it may get added to the Christmas pressie wishlist…
Tonight is another first wearing, a sample of Masque Milano Tango. It is rather sexy- a boozy amber, but if I don’t fall in love that’s ok. $240 worth of sexy I can do without…
I liked that when I smelled it at Twisted Lily…definitely dirty and definitely wonderful.
I have a small sample of Wit that I am saving for a special day . . . Glad you like it.
Accidentally emptied a tiny sample of Andrea Maack Coven on my jumper today, and by god, it has tenacity. I still smell intensely like tar and bark and moss some eight hours later…
I’m jumping the gun on Uncle Serge Day with Encens et Lavande.
The first time I wore this one, I thought it was one of SL’s vanishing acts (like Fleurs d’Oranger – twenty minutes and oops, it’s gone) but after the all-lavender opening, it settles down into a gorgeous cool, clear lavender-inflected incensey radiance that’s perfect for a fall day.
I’m wearing Amouage Journey. I think I need to do a little detective work before tomorrow morning because I’m not even sure which of the ones among the samples and decants I have are discontinued.
I did that earlier this week, went back through my spreadsheet and double checked my d/c column. A couple that I thought were no longer in production either are just hard to find or have been re-released and several have been axed since my last update. The Friday community projects have really helped me to justify having spent so much time on my list.
I have a spreadsheet as well, but no d/c column. Need to add that!
I’ve thought of doing that too, although if you wait long enough and something is reformulated, isn’t that “kind of” discontinued also? 🙂
I put on Sage Onyx today. The weather is overcast and a little cooler and it just felt right.
A sample of L’orpheline arrived today from SL. I didn’t really feel the love and it seems bizarrely short lived – I can barely smell it after 4 hours or so.
Same thing happened to me – what I could smell was nice but it seemed so insubstantial and wispy.
Today I’m wearing a sample of Bottega Veneta, which I simply adore. Every time I wear it, I sort of regret buying Eau Légère instead of the original, but Eau Légère is so pretty that I feel like a bad friend, secretly preferring to hang out with her sister. I can’t justify owning both, though, so if I ever run out of Eau Légère, I’m almost positive I’ll replace it with the original.
BV for me today too! This one is a no brainer — easy, breezy on any day of the year.
I love BV too!
I’m wearing Le Temps d’une Fete, which is also discontinued (although I think it might be available on demand). I’ll probably wear that tomorrow.
Out of my 21 FBs, three are discontinued. That’s around 15% and it’s not negligible, considering I only started buying perfume twenty months ago.
Parfum1 and LuckyScent have it at the moment. (LTdF is an absolute favorite and I try to keep tabs on supplies of it… and you’re right, it’s listed as “available on demand” at the PdN website, or it was last time I checked.)
I think maybe 40% of my collection is discontinued. Frustrating, eh? Good thing I’ve got so much…
Yes, actually you are right, I just saw it on First in Fragrance as well. It is lovely, isn’t it!
On this rainy cool NW morning, I’m in the cozy Spiritueuse Double Vanille. It’s hitting the spot today!
Today I grabbed Anna Miyake’s beautiful fall scent, Tsukimi, and it is just perfect for an early autumn day. Creamy woods, and yummy.
Nothing yet until after a haircut at noon. Then will probably wear Shanghai Lily as it is grey and rainy. Still trying to decide how much I like it.
Ohhh, I wish I had seen this because Shanghai Lily is great a grey, rainy day. You smell great! I may have to change it up after my Amber & Lavender wears off. 🙂
It’s cool and grey here, so I spritzed on some Jo Malone Amber and Lavender, which is really straightforward, lovely, and I like it on a grey day…on my grey cardigan!
I’m planning on wearing Coty’s Muguet des Bois tomorrow and when I reached into the perfume horde to pull it out, I knocked over Muguet de Bonheur from Caron. (yes, sadly, I have my fragrances alphabetized…full bottles, anyway) I realized I hadn’t given MdB any love this spring or summer and rarely wear it in the winter, so I’m wearing it today. Since our temps are @90 degrees today (summer’s last gasp?), a feminine floral is welcome.
oh and by the way, love the Led Zep scarves! Old hippie that I am, I’d enjoy having the Houses of the Holy one (I’m assuming he made one for that album, too) with the yellow and peach colors.
I have the House of the Holy album and the colors on that are amazing! Would make a great scarf.
There will definitely be a Houses of the Holy scarf but have not seen a picture of it. Of course we already know what it will look like 🙂
I love the scarves! Once upon a time, Led Zep were one of my favorite bands (along with Iron Maiden, of course.) But I recently reorganized my dresser, and my new mantra is “I do not need any more scarves, I do not need any more scarves, for the love of all that is holy, I do not need any more scarves.”
I’m wearing Encens Liquide from Memoire Liquide – a nice warm ambery thing that feels quite cozy. I picked it up when everything was 60% off at Bendels, and I feel pretty good about it.
Have a lovely day everyone!
So peeved I missed that sale! Argh!
But happy for you 🙂
And by the way, what is going on with Bendel’s? They don’t do makeup or skincare anymore? Only accessories? Lots of changes there.
I remember in the mid-90s when going to Bendells with my friends to try on Mac lipsticks was the highlight of my shopping week!
That sounds lovely. I think it had become a bit of a scene with all the tourists crowding the first floor….maybe that’s part of the reasoning for the switch? Just to capitalize on the brand name?
I dove in head first on that sale….oy.
I believe that Bendel’s plan was to sell only Bendel’s brand products, whatever they might be. I’m not sure if that ultimately is going to include any beauty products they may create, but all I can say is that it is sad. They had so many good things there, though I will confess to never buying, just sniffing.
We had fun at that sale
I am wearing SL Douce Amere, while not discontinued is no longer available in the export bottles.
I’m wearing Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs in the parfum concentration (recent reissue). I’ve got the sniffles and while my sense of smell is still working, it’s a bit compromised at the moment, so I’ve sprayed with abandon. Since I’m telecommuting today, I don’t need to worry about my office mates. The orange blossom in this is so pretty.
I love this one, the nutmeg gives it a wonderful twist. Hope your sniffles disappear soon.
I ran quick errands this morning and bopped into JCrew to see the 2 new frags. I am test driving #57 right now and really like it. It is a wonderful fall scent and so far it hasn’t turned on my skin. Not sure if I really need to buy but the rollerball was inexpensive if I feel the impulse. 😀
You have my encouragement to go for the rollerball! I’m superhappy with mine, worn it a bunch already. The scent is great, and to me at least, there’s a way in which it’s easier to enjoy wearing something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. No stress perfume 🙂
Technically I’m scentless today but my lab coat smells like Lyric. I have an almost-headache and feel really fuzzy so didn’t want to trigger a migraine. It must really be true love because the leftover Lyric isn’t bothering me at all and I kind of wish I had worn a tiny spray.
We are scent twins today, as I’m also wearing Lyric. I just purchased a bottle (my first Amouage) and am eager to give it ample skin time.
Hope you feel better soon!
Congrats on your first Amouage!
Yes, congrats! I have a decant but I will totally spring for a huge bottle if I can ever afford it. Thanks. I often have headaches and have since childhood so am kind of used to it, but they still cramp my style a bit.
Congrats on buying the Amouage! Lyric is the best- you both smell divine 🙂
SOTD is Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale. Pretty and refreshing, but it’s not grabbing me. I do like light and refreshing things, but maybe a teeny bit more sweetness would interest me more.
If you are in the DC area, there are currently many flowering tropical plants in the garden on the west side of the Sackler Gallery (behind the Smithsonian Castle). The white ginger smells incredible, and the gardenias are lovely, too.
I have to caution that although the frangipanis are beautiful, these particular varieties – one with unusually large flowers and another with deep rose flowers – don’t smell as good as the ones that are common in the tropics.
I also love the Mary Livingston Garden on the east side of the Museum of Arts and Industries, which is to the East of the Castle. There are some astonishing Dutchman’s pipe vines from Brazil, which are carnivorous plants. Their bizarre blooms are designed to attract insects, trap them inside and digest them. 🙂
One of my favorite museums in the world, thanks for the update!
Oh, how I miss the Sackler and the Freer (grew up in MD and now live in San Diego). My favorite galleries and the Sackler has the best gift shop of any museum. Asian movie/anime festivals at the Freer in the summer – it’s where I first saw My Neighbor Totoro so many years ago, one of my favorite movies of all time. I’ll admit that I didn’t notice the plants outside that much (other than the garden right behind the castle). Thanks for the reminder.
The Freer and Sackler still have film series and interesting talks. However, they modified the gift shop in the Sackler and it now has far fewer books. They also had the gift shop in the Freer closed for remodeling; I have not checked on that. Those plants are sort tucked away, and there are also tables where people eat lunch and benches tucked away in plant lined alcoves. Perhaps I should not be giving away this secret, but we’re among perfume friends here, right? 😉
I’m off to see the Freer’s Peacock Room with the shutters open, which they do every third Thursday of the month now.
Wow yes truly thank you for sharing this wonderful tips! We’ll keep it hush hush 🙂
I love My Neighbor Totoro!!
Turns out, my daughter loves it too. Happily it stands up to being watched 700 times.
I love My Neighbor Tortoro! I first saw it at an outdoor arts festival too, they put a big screen up at Hillarys Boat Harbour and everyone sat on the sand of the little beach to watch it, eating woodfired pizza. I love summer 🙂
I could happily spend the rest of my life in the Smithsonian Museums. I have a deep secret desire to sift throught all the drawers and cabinets that the public never sees.
The Native American Museum is just a dream, architecturally speaking. I love DC and get a very sophisticated and worldly feeling whenever I ride the metro- feel like I am star in some fantastical movie about intrigue and romance! I have no clue why. If I ride the El in Chicago, I just feel like an average Joe after a long day at a boring desk job.
DC has some kind of hold on me, I think.
I feel the same way about the Metro! I think it has something to do with the architecture – the stations I saw had wonderful vaulted ceilings. My husband actually took photos of them, we liked them so much. I remember talking to some locals and they were surprised we liked their Metro so much, but we found them much nicer than Chicago’s grimy el stations.
Hearing someone say something nice about metro makes me smile. Personally, after years of hour-and-a-half long one-way commutes, I was relieved to start driving the 20-30 minutes to work (BIG discrepancy between metro time and car time). The fact that other people have warm memories of it softens me up a little bit, though. 🙂
I do love the design of the Metro system’s underground stations!
Oh we used to have a dutchmans pipe vine at the house I grew up in. Fascinating, but the smell is truly repulsive.
Oh, that must have been fun!
Here they have the vines climbing up fairly high, so I haven’t gotten close enough to sniff them them yet. Of course, they are designed to resemble a nice piece of carrion in order to attract the insects, so it makes sense that they would have that smell. So amazing to look at.
Wearing Cuir Ottoman today, which is something I can wear year-round, but I prefer it in the fall.
One of my favorites too- I am devastated over the loss of the 50ml bottles
YSL Nu edp in the gunmetal hockey-puck bottle, which I think was discontinued but then revived in those cube bottles. Dark and smoky incense with a thick orchid middle act. Amazing.
Like this one. Puck is fun.
SOTD is YSL Paris Roses des Bois. A favorite in springtime, I also enjoy it in early fall layered over a tart blackberry lotion to enhance the sense of the last of the summer roses peeking out amidst the blackberry brambles.
P.S. Sending “Feel better” wishes to those NST’ers not feeling quite up to par today!
Yum that does sound good!
SOTD is (vintage) Dior Homme.
All the talk of the Bendel’s sale reminds me I have to pull out my Union coffret again. One of those scents for today–not yet sure which one.
SOTD = Guerlain Iris Ganache
I’m starting a day early on the discontinued. Iris Ganache is not quite a love at first sniff/application kind of perfume but once it has had a chance to warm up, it is GORGEOUS!
This is one I’m very curious about- I didn’t realize it was d/c’d though 🙁
Love that one. 🙂
I’m testing Odeur 53 (from the STC Friday decant sale) for the first time, and I’d be curious to hear what others make of it–I’m wondering if I might be anosmic to something in it, as it sorta feels like there’s not much there there? It’s sort of mildly sweet (I guess floral, in the most abstract way?)…and not much else, as far as I can tell. The razzmatazz about sand, fire, burnt robber, grass, metal, nail polish, etc. etc. etc.–so totally absent as to make me wonder if it’s some kind of elaborate prank? I see Robin’s review doesn’t get much of these either, but nevertheless she seems to detect more to it than I can. Anyone else want to add data points?
SOTD is Hermes Bel Ami – like Foxbins, I’m in the Northwest and we’re having our first cool-ish rainy day in a LONG time. Still a little muggy, so i wanted something warm but bone-dry. Mission accomplished!
Bel Ami is wonderful, and I’m very curious about the new Bel Ami Vetiver, which appears to have arrived at Nordstrom and Saks now, according to google.
Incense Rosé from Tauer today. This and Incense extreme always make me feel really clean, I feel like I understand some of the “purifying” aspect if incense through these perfumes.
I put on Iris Silver Mist from a sample this morning, but aside from a little bit that got on my shirt, it’s pretty much gone now. At least my shirt still smells good.
Today was a Tom Ford Violet Blonde day. Muted elegance, at least to my own nostrils :).
Oooh, that’s a good one! Definitely elegant!
1000 for me again today. My go to.
A super generous perfume fairy sister from the big apple sent a package of decants that arrived in the mail today. So tonight I put on some Indochine and totally love it. It reminds me a little bit of Fragonard Santal, but has more spice/floral interest and dimension. The dry down is also completely different, more creamy and there’s something that smells like Indonesian long peppercorn in there. It’s a quiet introspective perfume that fits me to a T
Also, I would like to officially apologise for all the unkind things I said about Dzing! I tried it again yesterday in the cooler weather and it is absolutely lovely in the dry down. Very salt/musky and delicious. Somehow the “greasepaint” note stays in it’s little circus trailer in the cooler weather.
Love Dzing!, glad to hear you’ve also fallen under the spell!
I happen to be testing it tonight. I’m still not sure I need it but I like its weirdness. For some reason it doesn’t say circus to me at all but rather reminds me of my childhood best friend’s bunk bed mattress. It was one of those crinkly plastic coated foam things that they make for kids who wet the bed, and it had a very distinctive scent.
