Thursday scent of the day 9/18

Posted by Robin on 18 September 2014 124 Comments

Led Zeppelin scarves, Paul Smith

What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing the lovely light vetiver from Paul Smith, Story. Great scent, perfect book-inspired packaging (there are even ridges down the top and sides for "pages"), sadly discontinued.

Reminder: tomorrow, wear something discontinued. The following Friday, 26 September, will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows two of six limited edition Paul Smith scarves showcasing Led Zeppelin album covers. Due to launch in October, 50 of each were made.

I didn’t have to queue, although the overall voter turnout was exceptionally high, which is a good thing – & thankfully the result was what I had hoped for.

My husband and I just spent 2 weeks in Scotland (cruising Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal). We heard lots of info on the vote while we were there. We’re eagerly awaiting the results even here in the US.

I tried it a couple of days ago. I have somewhat forgotten already how it started out, but it was a little harsh. It got softer and was very green to me after about 10 minutes. I’m afraid I wasn’t crazy about it. Reviews on Sephora haven’t been favorable, so not a hit with the general public, but perfumistas might like it pretty well. Bottle was very cute.

I smelled it on a blotter at Sephora yesterday. I didn’t care for it much. I got a lot of violet leaf in it, which is a tough note for me. It reminded me a lot of DSquared HeWood.

Today was a beautiful spring day and it was my first wearing of Wit, from a decant. This is beautiful! I’m thinking it may get added to the Christmas pressie wishlist…
Tonight is another first wearing, a sample of Masque Milano Tango. It is rather sexy- a boozy amber, but if I don’t fall in love that’s ok. $240 worth of sexy I can do without…

I’m jumping the gun on Uncle Serge Day with Encens et Lavande.

The first time I wore this one, I thought it was one of SL’s vanishing acts (like Fleurs d’Oranger – twenty minutes and oops, it’s gone) but after the all-lavender opening, it settles down into a gorgeous cool, clear lavender-inflected incensey radiance that’s perfect for a fall day.

I did that earlier this week, went back through my spreadsheet and double checked my d/c column. A couple that I thought were no longer in production either are just hard to find or have been re-released and several have been axed since my last update. The Friday community projects have really helped me to justify having spent so much time on my list.

Today I’m wearing a sample of Bottega Veneta, which I simply adore. Every time I wear it, I sort of regret buying Eau Légère instead of the original, but Eau Légère is so pretty that I feel like a bad friend, secretly preferring to hang out with her sister. I can’t justify owning both, though, so if I ever run out of Eau Légère, I’m almost positive I’ll replace it with the original.

Out of my 21 FBs, three are discontinued. That’s around 15% and it’s not negligible, considering I only started buying perfume twenty months ago.

Parfum1 and LuckyScent have it at the moment. (LTdF is an absolute favorite and I try to keep tabs on supplies of it… and you’re right, it’s listed as “available on demand” at the PdN website, or it was last time I checked.)

I’m planning on wearing Coty’s Muguet des Bois tomorrow and when I reached into the perfume horde to pull it out, I knocked over Muguet de Bonheur from Caron. (yes, sadly, I have my fragrances alphabetized…full bottles, anyway) I realized I hadn’t given MdB any love this spring or summer and rarely wear it in the winter, so I’m wearing it today. Since our temps are @90 degrees today (summer’s last gasp?), a feminine floral is welcome.

But I recently reorganized my dresser, and my new mantra is “I do not need any more scarves, I do not need any more scarves, for the love of all that is holy, I do not need any more scarves.”

I dove in head first on that sale….oy.

I believe that Bendel’s plan was to sell only Bendel’s brand products, whatever they might be. I’m not sure if that ultimately is going to include any beauty products they may create, but all I can say is that it is sad. They had so many good things there, though I will confess to never buying, just sniffing.

SOTD is Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale. Pretty and refreshing, but it’s not grabbing me. I do like light and refreshing things, but maybe a teeny bit more sweetness would interest me more.

If you are in the DC area, there are currently many flowering tropical plants in the garden on the west side of the Sackler Gallery (behind the Smithsonian Castle). The white ginger smells incredible, and the gardenias are lovely, too.

I have to caution that although the frangipanis are beautiful, these particular varieties – one with unusually large flowers and another with deep rose flowers – don’t smell as good as the ones that are common in the tropics.

I also love the Mary Livingston Garden on the east side of the Museum of Arts and Industries, which is to the East of the Castle. There are some astonishing Dutchman’s pipe vines from Brazil, which are carnivorous plants. Their bizarre blooms are designed to attract insects, trap them inside and digest them. 🙂

Oh, how I miss the Sackler and the Freer (grew up in MD and now live in San Diego). My favorite galleries and the Sackler has the best gift shop of any museum. Asian movie/anime festivals at the Freer in the summer – it’s where I first saw My Neighbor Totoro so many years ago, one of my favorite movies of all time. I’ll admit that I didn’t notice the plants outside that much (other than the garden right behind the castle). Thanks for the reminder.

The Freer and Sackler still have film series and interesting talks. However, they modified the gift shop in the Sackler and it now has far fewer books. They also had the gift shop in the Freer closed for remodeling; I have not checked on that. Those plants are sort tucked away, and there are also tables where people eat lunch and benches tucked away in plant lined alcoves. Perhaps I should not be giving away this secret, but we’re among perfume friends here, right? 😉

I’m off to see the Freer’s Peacock Room with the shutters open, which they do every third Thursday of the month now.

Turns out, my daughter loves it too. Happily it stands up to being watched 700 times.

I love My Neighbor Tortoro! I first saw it at an outdoor arts festival too, they put a big screen up at Hillarys Boat Harbour and everyone sat on the sand of the little beach to watch it, eating woodfired pizza. I love summer 🙂

I could happily spend the rest of my life in the Smithsonian Museums. I have a deep secret desire to sift throught all the drawers and cabinets that the public never sees.

The Native American Museum is just a dream, architecturally speaking. I love DC and get a very sophisticated and worldly feeling whenever I ride the metro- feel like I am star in some fantastical movie about intrigue and romance! I have no clue why. If I ride the El in Chicago, I just feel like an average Joe after a long day at a boring desk job.

DC has some kind of hold on me, I think.

I feel the same way about the Metro! I think it has something to do with the architecture – the stations I saw had wonderful vaulted ceilings. My husband actually took photos of them, we liked them so much. I remember talking to some locals and they were surprised we liked their Metro so much, but we found them much nicer than Chicago’s grimy el stations.

Hearing someone say something nice about metro makes me smile. Personally, after years of hour-and-a-half long one-way commutes, I was relieved to start driving the 20-30 minutes to work (BIG discrepancy between metro time and car time). The fact that other people have warm memories of it softens me up a little bit, though. 🙂

Oh, that must have been fun!

Here they have the vines climbing up fairly high, so I haven’t gotten close enough to sniff them them yet. Of course, they are designed to resemble a nice piece of carrion in order to attract the insects, so it makes sense that they would have that smell. So amazing to look at.

YSL Nu edp in the gunmetal hockey-puck bottle, which I think was discontinued but then revived in those cube bottles. Dark and smoky incense with a thick orchid middle act. Amazing.

SOTD is YSL Paris Roses des Bois. A favorite in springtime, I also enjoy it in early fall layered over a tart blackberry lotion to enhance the sense of the last of the summer roses peeking out amidst the blackberry brambles.

I’m starting a day early on the discontinued. Iris Ganache is not quite a love at first sniff/application kind of perfume but once it has had a chance to warm up, it is GORGEOUS!

I’m testing Odeur 53 (from the STC Friday decant sale) for the first time, and I’d be curious to hear what others make of it–I’m wondering if I might be anosmic to something in it, as it sorta feels like there’s not much there there? It’s sort of mildly sweet (I guess floral, in the most abstract way?)…and not much else, as far as I can tell. The razzmatazz about sand, fire, burnt robber, grass, metal, nail polish, etc. etc. etc.–so totally absent as to make me wonder if it’s some kind of elaborate prank? I see Robin’s review doesn’t get much of these either, but nevertheless she seems to detect more to it than I can. Anyone else want to add data points?

A super generous perfume fairy sister from the big apple sent a package of decants that arrived in the mail today. So tonight I put on some Indochine and totally love it. It reminds me a little bit of Fragonard Santal, but has more spice/floral interest and dimension. The dry down is also completely different, more creamy and there’s something that smells like Indonesian long peppercorn in there. It’s a quiet introspective perfume that fits me to a T

Also, I would like to officially apologise for all the unkind things I said about Dzing! I tried it again yesterday in the cooler weather and it is absolutely lovely in the dry down. Very salt/musky and delicious. Somehow the “greasepaint” note stays in it’s little circus trailer in the cooler weather.

I happen to be testing it tonight. I’m still not sure I need it but I like its weirdness. For some reason it doesn’t say circus to me at all but rather reminds me of my childhood best friend’s bunk bed mattress. It was one of those crinkly plastic coated foam things that they make for kids who wet the bed, and it had a very distinctive scent.
