Thursday scent of the day 6/5

Posted by Robin on 5 June 2014 167 Comments

guerlain-jicky

What's your fragrance today? I'm wearing Guerlain Jicky, because Rappleyea mentioned it yesterday. As you can see from the ad above, it's "for women of leisure — the world over". Hey, that's me! In smaller print next to the Jicky bottle it says "so enchanting, gay and witty, Jicky is the very breath of happiness". Can't beat that. (Next to Shalimar, it says "All the allure and enchantment of fabled India in one divine perfume".)

Reminder: tomorrow is our weekly community scent of the day. Let's all try to wear something by Chanel. If that doesn't work for you, no worries, do chime in anyway, we don't care!

The following week will be Friday the 13th — wear your own version of 'Eau de Protection', i.e. something that brings you good luck or otherwise makes you feel safe and happy.

Ah, wish I had a bottle of the original Halston Woman! But last time I smelled it it was too changed.

The current Halston Classic (I bought mine about a year or two agao) was my gateway to chypres and is still one of my favorites. It was the first perfume with a moss note (whether it contains ‘real’ moss or not) that I found appealing. The peach in it really glows for me – while I still struggle with Mitsouko!

Happy Thursday! I’m wearing Cartier Baiser Vole EDP and seriously considering turning in some credit card points to get a bottle of the EDT as well.

Your comment makes me laugh. I read your review of Panthere and I can totally understand why you did go and buy a FB. You’ll get your BV someday. Make someone give it to you as a present. They used to have the 30 ml bottle at fragrance net for not so much money which is how I broke down and got mine last summer. It’s one of the few bottles I bought last year. It is worth it!

You should just do a Robin only APB swap for your BV. There was someone on the PP swapmania who was trying to unload a bottle of BV edt. It’s not the same as the edp, but you never know …. Just saying 😉

I tried to do some perfume math by which the fact that I’m not tempted by the Lys Rose version means I’ve earned the EDT… let me run the numbers once more, I’ve almost proved it!

I love BV, but especially the edt for its greenness.

My new bottle of Baiser Vole EDP arrived in the mail yesterday and I have happily been wearing that today. Now, after reading your comment, I am really interested in sniffing the EDT. There are very few fragrances that I love enough to buy both EDP and EDT, I think I only have done that with Shalimar.

Both the lighter , greener EDT and the richer, sweeter Essence version are beautifully crafted. I would wear any of them. Also (I’m sure the extrait is also divine, but I’ve never smelled it.)

I have both – mini bottle of BV EDP (thanks Ari – how’s your cat enjoying that stroller?!) and the mondo bottle of EDT that I bought on the spot. I love love love the EDT in the summer. It’s a touch sweeter and a touch bubblier? Just seems more effervescent to me. Both are lovely!

SOTD is Nudite Intense. A very light Egyptian musk type perfume oil. Long lasting but very sheer. Layered with the body cream of the same scent to give it a little more ooomph!

Robin, far as I can tell, it’s made by a company named Fusion Brands. Fusion Brands is also the maker of Memoire Liquide Bespoke Collection (fragrance) and a color cosmetic line whose name escapes me. Nudite Intense is on Amazon but there’s a set available (body cream and fragrance pen that should outlast me) on the bay for cheap – that’s where I scored mine.

SOTD is Terre d’Hermes. Thought it would work for the warm, humid, rainy day we are having here.

I am so excited about the community SOTD tomorrow! I recently bought some Chanel samples to become more acquainted with the brand. I am having a hard time deciding between ones I have tried and like (Coco, Crystalle, Sycomore, or Cuir de Russie) or going for one I haven’t really tried yet.

My scent of the day faded so quickly that I guess it’s a sign that I should go do some sampling after I get off work. I started with a sample of Magnolia Verano from Exotic Island Perfumer and I’m a bit surprised at how fast it faded because the others in the sample pack lasted a good long while

After Jessica’s incredible review of Guerlain Terracotta le Parfum, limited edition, I’ve been on a quest to find it – more difficult than you might think. Although none for sale at my local Nordstrom, the SA provided me with a very generous sample. So pretty, so summery, and unfortunately so very limited edition!

I think I got the last bottle anywhere! I called Vegas last night and they’re out. Called several stores locally and found one at my local Dillard’s. I Bolted out the door last night at 8:23pm to pick it up before they closed! Yay!

Not surprisingly, Terracotta is my SOTD today. I love it. More jasmine/floral than Bronze Goddess which I like better. Perfect summer scent! And, 5 hours in I can still smell it! That’s a long time for me as normally scents are nearly gone by lunchtime on me.

got mine a few weeks ago at N-M–the SA told me that her store was only allotted 2 bottles. I guess they really want to make us chase down their limited eds. Agree, it’s a lovely and quite long-lived for an edt.

I never smelled the vintage, but love love love my current extrait.
My only reserve is for the heart-shaped bottle: I much prefer other Guerlain designs, especially the classics!

I also have the current version (brushed gold box), and either I’m a total heathen or there just isn’t that much difference between the two. I’ve read comments about the top not being as green, etc., etc., but it just made me disappointed that I spent the $$ for vintage!

IMHO there is no perceptible difference between vintage and recent Chamade. I have some old lyre bottle Chamade from the early 70s and some edt from the 2000s, and some vintage and not so vintage extrait. They pretty much all smell the same with the exception that the extrait is just “richer”. I’ve not smelled whatever is the newest version, so I can’t say about that.

I was about to wear Chamade, like Rappleya, but then decided I should wear a bit of attrape coeur, for a change. I never wear it in hot weather, after a bad experience in summer I usually reach for it in november/december, but have been really enjoying it’s creamy and woody-fruity violets all day long.

But I keep asking myself how many days to Xmas yet? ;P

        LOL!!
        I didn’t think about that!
I have very few perfumes which are season/occasion specific, but for those I seldom break my own rules, so it feels odd to smell like I do during December holidays in June!!
But if it is almost half-Xmas, then I am excused!

Jicky is one of the classics that I try to like but don’t. I put it on every now and then for reference and just to see if my nose has changed.

Sampling Lubin Korrigan today. LT, quoting someone else, said it makes him want to “eat, f*** and be it.” I think I’d have to reserve that accolade for chocolate. 🙂

Jicky is perhaps the only Guerlain I don’t like or cannot wear. It is so super smelly funky to me, that I just can’t do it. I get 5 day old mowing the lawn with no deoderant work shirt.

That’s probably the civet. Lavender is a challenging note for me, anyway; douse it with civet and my nose simply panics.

But I had a similar reaction to Shalimar, which I now love, so I keep thinking one day my nose will adapt to Jicky, too.

SOTD is JM Blackberry and Bay. I thought it would be pleasant during a doctor’s appointment this morning, but for some reason it’s just not doing it for me. I think I like this one better in cool weather. Not that it’s hot today, I’ve been blessed with a completely sunny, slightly breezy 70 degrees. It’s one of the most perfect days I have had the fortune to experience. I just wish I had picked a better fit for the weather and my mood. Of course, if I do that I’ll end up in Eau de Marveilles every day.

Wearing Le Temps d’une Fête right now.

I’ve tried a lot of the classic Guerlains, but for some reason a lot of them don’t seem to work for me… the only one that I really like is Chamade. I wonder if it’s the “Guerlinade” that is the issue, since some of their newer releases that I like seem not to have that (e.g. Insolence which I don’t care for vs. Idylle which I like). I kind of feel like a bad perfumista saying that though!

There’s no such thing as a bad perfumista. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it! There is no wonder if you like Temps d’une Fete that you like Chamade – they are galbanum sisters. You smell great! You should try Annick Goutal Heure Exquise and also Chanel No 19 – they all have that wonderful galbanum and white flowers thing going on.

      I sometimes do this too!
(I was planning this very combination for tomorrow, Chanel day;))
So I am not the only one to find BDI a bit fleeting…
I must say that the extrait smelled much richer from the tester in the shop, than in the bottle I got there.
I hope it will get more *ooomph* with age…
I usually dab the extrait on the wrists and add one spray of the edt towards my clothes/hair. What’s your recipe?

      • hajusuuri says:
        5 June 2014 at 11:35 pm

My normal method of applying perfumes is to spray and walk into the mist which I did with the EDT. I decanted the extrait to a vial and used the dipstick to run it through my hair. It did last longer but I am still not 100% satisfied.

My next recipe, and I know this is probably sacrilegious, is to empty that extrait vial into my atomizer which has about 8 mLs of the EDT left to create an extrait spiked EDT. I don’t know when I’ll do this but this is the plan.

SOTD is Tauer Parfums une Rose Chyprée in the humid thundery weather we have here. It’s lovely, just like everyone said! Good Day NST family. My SOTD is “Flora” by Gucci. It was a random grab from my “box of samples”. Flora is so not me. It doesn’t smell bad, just not a scent I would actually purchase. I am going to look up the notes to see what’s in it that I just don’t really care for. Another way I know this wasn’t the one for me is because I didn’t receive any compliments. It made me feel sad. 🙁
Oh well, I guess that’s the only way to see if you like something; testing it out.
Hope everyone is having a Terrific Thursday!

And the funny thing is when I looked up the notes this fragrance had, peony was one of them. Peony is one of my favorite notes. Never thought I would run across a fragrance with peony in it that I wouldn’t like.

I am suspicious of “peony” as a listed note — sometimes it’s the real lovely thing, of course, but it seems like marketing shorthand for “vague, scrubbed-clean florals that don’t smell like much of anything except budget cutbacks” in many instances.

It sounds like you nearly always get compliments on your perfume! Thats really nice!

Sometimes I think my natural bad smell must just seep through everything I ever spray on. Or else that my body simply neutralizes everything I spray…

Wearing Ormonde Jayne’s Tiare today. I bought their Discovery Set and have slowly been working my way through them. I liked Tolu very much but the others—meh so far. Tiare is not transporting me to a tropical isle; instead, I feel like I’m in a pub with a citrus-based drink in front of me, and a paper umbrella to convey that “vacation” vibe. I wanted an over-the-top, voluptuous, lush, creamy scent but instead I get citrus, greens, and wood.

I think this one is going in the swap pile.

Trying out a sample of Agonist Black Amber today. I think it’s the wrong time of year for it. Or maybe it’s just not working for me today.. I don’t know. The fact that I’ve had a headache all day (not perfume-related) probably isn’t helping. It’s very frankincense-y, and pretty herbal in the opening. I’ve been working from home today, and I keep getting a whiff of something really nice from the multitude of samples strewn on the coffee table in front of me, but I don’t know which one it’s coming from. Whatever it is, I wish I’d worn that one.
