Balenciaga Florabotanica ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 2 July 2012 32 Comments

Kristen Stewart for Balenciaga Florabotanica

Balenciaga will launch Florabotanica, a new fragrance fronted by actress Kristen Stewart, in September. Florabotanica is aimed at "younger" consumers, aged 18 and up.

Florabotanica was developed by perfumers Olivier Polge and Jean-Christophe Hérault; notes include mint, rose, carnation, caladium leaf, vetiver and amber.

Balenciaga Florabotanica will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

With that imagery it had better be original, or at least above average! It will be interesting to see how the mint plays out.

Not sure what would actually be nice, but it seems sort of surprisingly out of character to market something to the younger crowd without a mention of “pink berries” or something similar!

(And no pink pepper, now that I look over those notes again. Is it too much to hope that maybe this is a sign of a slow reduction in the pink-ification of fragrances for while?)

I am going to be pretty surprised if there isn’t fruit, but we’ll see!

“Balenciaga florabotanica” sounds like the name of a flesh-eating virus. Also, finally a use for Kristen Stewart. Dead-eyed perfume model! Perfect!

Now that you mention it, she does have a bit of that Keanu Reeves-esque lack of expression!

Spot on! They have the same shark eyes. I guess they chose her to front this berryless perfume because she does that blasé thing of hers. They must be aiming at a different demographics, at girls who listen to The Cure (or whatever they are listening today!) and not Justin Bieber. But I’d bet this is as good a getaway to the art of perfumery as Guerlain Acqua Allegoria Tutti Kiwi.

Hope you meant dead-eyed in the most complementary of ways. ;)

The virulent sounding name is intentional, elsewhere Balenciaga describes the perfume as “not just a pretty flower, but a pretty dangerous flower.”

Kristen could come with a bottle.
By the notes I can’t imagine how it’ll be at all. An unusual blend.

I’m hoping Grassy / green – unisex . Mint and rose excites me .

True, it may smell green. Even this way is hard to imagine. No citrus on top, rose + mint + vetiver + amber. I will have to give it a try.

I like the concept for this bottle. The striped cap and that tube inside of the juice are eye-catching.
Kristen Steward looks like a skinny zombie-pumpkin here, don’t you think?

Agree, the bottle is really great !! Balenciaga did some great shoes like this ! The inspiration was packing boxes ! Using cubes of wood and bright contrasting neon panels and inserts ! Very cool , very expensive

Yes! Good call on the shoes. Also I think the striped tube is supposed to reference laboratory samples, cetrifugal tubes and even genome maps as there is a nod to scientific nomenclature in the name.

I’m going to repeat what I wrote elsewhere, that this sounds a lot like Vitriol d’Oeillet with mint in place of clove. Hope this dangerous carnation is better than VdO which I hated. Given the last two Balenciagas, which were mainstream but interesting and were definitely not sellouts scent-wise, I have high expectations.

    It smelled a little 2008 Chloe-ish. Haha! I won’t be needing a bottle. I’ll stick with my beloved Paris. : )

Ok, I’m definitely getting a Burberry Body vibe from this one too so yeah, seeing as how Body is one of my least favorite scents in existence, I won’t be needing a bottle. It is no where near as STONG as I think Body is so I guess that’s a plus. Haha! : )

I’m surprised they are using Kristen Stewart as the face of the perfume. Wouldn’t it be bad PR given the whole scandal thing that happened a couple months ago?
