The scent of freshly cooked jacket potatoes

Posted by Robin on 8 February 2012 10 Comments

A unique new advert is set to make commuters' mouths water as it replaces the usual bus shelter aroma with the scent of freshly cooked jacket potatoes.

Commuters waiting for buses in York, Manchester, London, Nottingham and Glasgow will be able to experience the 3D adverts for McCain Ready Baked Jackets.

Oh funny – I have a twinpack of these in the freezer – the lady on the check out said they are very tasty. However, I think I would rather just cook them at home than stand at a bus stop to enjoy the “surround smell” of the adverts – especially in this weather…

And the daft thing about the product itself is that if you cook them in a conventional oven rather than a microwave, they take 40 minutes or so – I could bake a jacket spud in that time from scratch!

Yes, gotta admit I don’t understand the product itself … any potato will heat in the microwave pretty quickly?

Oh yes, every 10 years or so this kind of gimmick pops up, remember Smellovision anyone? I suppose it’s better than smelling the usual busstop smells of ciggarette butts, diesel and urine but I’d be more impressed if they were pumping in an actual perfume. Now that would be a fun informal poll, what perfume WOULD you like to smell while waiting for the bus? I’m going for the easy answer, Chanel # 5 because you can’t have too much Chanel and it would give that old greyhound some class, what about you?

They did this in San Francisco with chocolate chip cookie smell, and people complained like mad, LOL…

OMG Robin! I remember that now! Happily, I was a train commuter at the time so I didn’t have to smell it but I remember it made the papers, it was reputedly AWFUL xD Thanks for jogging my memory *grins*

I’d have to look it up, but I think they ended up taking them down.

I would not want to smell anything foodie in a moving vehicle. It might be interesting if it’s for a perfume ad.

It’s at the bus stops, not on the buses :-)

Ahh. Even so, I would prefer perfume in place of food. Food would either annoy me or make me hungry. What next? Smell of laundry detergent, coffee, curry, pizza, air freshner…?

Good grief, one more temptation to eat more! Gaah!
