Valentino Valentina ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 22 June 2011 34 Comments

Valentino Valentina

Valentino will launch Valentina, a new 'sensual and sexy' perfume for women, in September. It will be the brand's first fragrance under new licensing arrangements with Puig. Valentina will be fronted by model Freja Beha Erichsen.

Valentina is a floriental and was developed by perfumers Alberto Morillas and Oliver Cresp. The notes feature bergamot, white truffle, white flowers, strawberry, cedar, amber and vanilla.

Valentino Valentina will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum and in matching body products.

Update: additional notes include jasmine, orange blossom and tuberose.

Am I the only one who is instantly put off by any fragrance that lists “strawberry” in the notes? Not that I don’t like strawberries, the taste great, smell wonderful, but it seems like it’s in every other femme fragrance that hits the market.

Miss Dior Cherie really seemed to popularize strawberry as a note, and yeah, it doesn’t make me want to try something. Hopefully this won’t be as ‘young and sweet’ as MDC, although I understand MDC has changed a good deal so I don’t even know what it smells like now.

MDC Used to be OFFENSIVELY Sweet and Syurpy but it wore it’s Crown of Caramel and Strawberries and anything else in the Cupboard that was sweet like a Miss USA Winner, Proudly… Now all the offensive and Somewhat delightfully confectionary Thrill has been Stripped away from MDC and it is less than a Shadow of its former self… kinda like that Gasoline/Metallic thing That made the Original Fahrenheit so Distrubingly Seductive! The Perfumer at Dior is truly Running Amok with Arnault’s Blessing if not Directive it would seem! Now MDC is Still SWEET, But in a kinda nonchalant Pass-By-A-Pastry Shop kinda way, not like one was trapped in a Glass bottle filled with Gummi Bears! And for that… it has lost All of it’s Charm and Certainly, ALL of it’s Backbone… Because when the rest of Perfumery was say… OH HELLS NO to this Kind of Fragrance, MDC was Saying… WHATEVAH HEATHER GOODBYE FELICIA! and Striking out on it’s own path which obviously, EVERYONE eventually followed for we are INNUNDATED with Sweet Fruity Syurpy Fragrances nowadays.. that Miss Dior Cherie would Backpedal on the Revolution it started seems Higlhly Counter-Intuitive… But i don’t Run Things at Dior… Wish i Did, cus i’d send out total old school reformulations of the REFORMULATIONS that have been sweeping through Dior and Bring back all the KICKASS Original Recipes for the Fragrances… From Diorling to Diorama to Fahrenheit to yes, Children… Miss Dior Cherie!

It is true, it’s a shame what they’ve done at Dior.

I like the sound of this, and I like the bottle aswell.

I didn’t really smell strawberry in Miss Dior Cherie, it never struck me as too sweet, just the right amount of sweet. which obv tells you something about my taste.

and I asked someone here on NST how the new Miss Dior Cherie smells and they said it’s nothing like it used to be and everything about it has been stripped away. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the old Miss Dior Cherie, I love it. then I thought, why did they strip it all away? why make something people love so bland and soul-less? it just makes no sense, they’ve taken the spirit and life and
personality out of Miss Dior Cherie.

I’ve been contemplating whether to buy a bottle or not (the old one). and what size? I thought if I made it one of my regular scents get 100ml and re-purchase ’till I got tired of it but now they’ve changed it I’m not going to wear it forever so might aswell get 50ml. 30ml is too small.

although, I already have flowerbomb which is sweet and Miss Dior Cherie is just as expensive :S plus lately I don’t seem to have the spare cash to spend £50-odd on perfume. I know I won’t regret buying a bottle if decide to go for it I might aswell get a bottle before they leave the shelves.

This sort of explains the changes to MDC:

            thanks Robin that helps.

I think I understand it more now. so Dior don’t have their own in-house perfumer? so they don’t really have a say in the changes because they buy perfume in from an external supplier?

I didn’t think the old Miss Dior Cherie was that strong to start with, now it’s even lighter it will be un-detectable.

so I’m gonna have to go and get me an old Miss Dior Cherie quick before they run out! I just had a look on Boots & Debenhams and the 50ml is £60 !! the 30ml is £44.

well I hope the new “improved” Miss Dior Cherie doesn’t sell, it’s no longer unique and voluptuous. just bland and like everything else. ack. bring back the old one.

          • Robin says:
            24 June 2011 at 4:16 pm

No, it’s that they do have an in-house perfumer and want to stop buying the juice from external fragrance & flavor companies. The vast majority of designer perfumes are made by external fragrance & flavor companies.

The truffle put me off in Black Orchid, though I assume it will be “nonoffensive” here.

Strawberry is usually an instant “oh no” for me too. Strawberries are wonderful fruits, one of my favorites, but I don’t want to smell like one (i feelt he same way about chocolate…)

I can’t, offhand, think of a strawberry perfume I ever wanted to own. But there’s a first for everything, LOL…

I love strawberry as a note when done well. I’m afraid to see what they’ve done to my beloved MDC and am thinking of tracking down some old stock just in case, but love the original Hanae Mori and even the often strongly disliked Montale Mukhallat(sp?).

Truffle was rather challenging in Black Orchid, but that one’s grown on me after a couple test sprays. I’d love to try this one, too. It sounds interesting if nothing else.

The original Hanae Mori was my first serious fragrance. These days it’s way too sweet for me, but I still think it’s very well done — one of the better strawberry-ish scents out there.

Yes, strawberry is a deal breaker for me as are caramel and chocolate in any fragrance. I am also not a fan of the much loved Miss Dior Cherie, preferring instead the prim and rather astringent Miss Dior. Love, love, love the bottle as well as most other creations of Valentino. I would die happy if I had one of their handbags, any one at all . . . sigh.

Heh heh, I’ve got a sweet tooth when it comes to those notes in fragrances. While I’m so-so on chocolate (it really depends on how it’s framed within the fragrance, caramel is usually and instant addiction for me. It’s what really hooked me with Angel.

Cute bottle, though that little black stopper looks somewhat out of place to me.

Looking forward to smelling the fragrance – the notes sound delicious!

Will it launch in the US in Sept? I’m psyched for it! I LOVE the bottle and the notes can either be extremely weird and wonderful with the combo of truffle and strawberry, or a complete disaster. Haha. : )

My Saks is only like a 15 minute drive away… i know your is like in the Hinterlands from where you live… so i know all that good stuff at Saks is out of your reach… let me be your Facilitator! LOL! HUG! :-D

HA…you mean you’re 15 minutes away AND they give you samples?? The 2 Saks stores that I am able to visit rarely are unbelievably stingy with samples, much more so than any other department store. That is why I don’t even bother to make the trip! If it’s at Neiman Marcus or Nordstrom, I can usually get it, at Saks, forget it.

I am a great floriental fan and I adore that bottle! The bottle and its pink floral-ness is not usually my style but I really can’t wait to see it in person.

As soon as I saw strawberry in the notes list it put me off a bit. I don’t know where the bias came from and I suspect its just a random bias I’ve constructed. I want to do some strawberry exploration before this comes out. Any recommendations?

I don’t know how much strawberry is left in Miss Dior Cherie, but it might be worth a shot. Or, SJP NYC or Ed Hardy Woman.

sexy? there’s nothing sexy about this. I think it just launched recently and I tried it today in Debenhams. it’s sweetly floral with some fruit.
so I guess I smelled the strawberry, jasmine and vanilla, and the bergamot.

this is so blatantly mainstream that for many perfumistas on here it won’t be worth trying. it smells like so many other perfumes I bet each person on here that tries it thinks of a different perfume that it’s similar to.

it smells to me like Lolita Lempicka(the kind of apple shaped bottle) but a lot lighter and without the liqourice. this is also a quiet perfume aswell with hardly any silage. so it’s virtually un-detectable on the skin unless you press it to your nose and even then you have to sniff hard. I do get a whiff of it every now and then though. I’ve had it on for an hour or so and it’s already starting to fade.

but despite this hardly having any smell, I think I like this most out of all the Valentino’s I’ve tried, if only it were stronger. I like the bottle aswell :) I don’t think I’ll buy it though.
