Hermes Eau Claire des Merveilles ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 24 June 2010 29 Comments

Hermes Eau Claire des Merveilles perfume

Hermès will launch Eau Claire des Merveilles, a new flanker to 2004's Eau des Merveilles, in September.

Eau Claire des Merveilles was developed by Hermès house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, and is described as delicate, soft and sparkling, with powder notes and vanilla.

Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles will be available in 50 and 100 ml. (via fr.elle.be, ladepeche.fr, with thanks to Jacob for the link!)

Update: see a review of Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles.

It is one of my favorite bottles. Surprised it has not been copied more!

Jon – I’m right there with you: they had me at powder!

Sweet powder is literally one of my favorite accords. China White, Eau Premiere, Shalimar, Lubin’s Vetyver….

I love the bottle too. Hermes’s non-uniform bottles tend to be amazing.

Admit it is not one of mine, but I do love the original…this could be interesting.

Funny this should pop up: I’ve needed to replenish my EdM supply for a few months. I should consider that soon.

I’m a bit skeptical of a powdery-vanillic flanker to that orangey-salty masterpiece, but as always, I’ll be willing to sample if I see it.

It does sound like an odd mix, sort of. We’ll see!

Delicate? Soft? Sparkling? Promising to me.

Robin, What are powder notes? I don’t know if I like powder or not.

Gosh, hard to explain except to say that they smell like powder…there is a list here, and more mentioned in the comments:

but with flankers these days how do you know if it even has anything in common with the original fragrance? There may be no orange-saltiness anywhere in this one. Soft, sparkling powder and vanilla sounds pretty darned good to me.
I look forward to getting my nostrils on a bit of this—anything Hermes, anything JCE = clearly sniff-worthy.

Anything Hermès do gets an automatic invite to my nose, too! [Now that sounds dirty. I wonder why.]
I was wondering about the wisdom of pairing salty oranges with vanilla and powder, too – but you’re right, it may as well have nothing to do with the original except for the marketable name/bottle shape. It sure gets my hopes up!

I’m pretty sure it will have plenty in common with the original EdV. We’re not talking about Escada here.

Joe, I’d say they’d have to eliminate the salt if they are going to powder…. it does seem an incongruous pairing.

I liked Elixir but I liked the original better. Glad to see another flanker though!

I’ve literally just bought a bottle of Eau des Merveilles and now I need to try this too! I’m sure I saw Eau Clair in Lisbon airport on the weekend, but I’d overloaded myself by that point and coupled with a delayed flight I had to go and find somewhere to sit quietly!

I must be wrong though if it’s not launched until Sept. I’d definitely overdone it then! :-)

Not necessarily…things sometimes appear on counter months before the “official launch”.

Oh good, so I’m not going mad!

A friend in Glasgow just emailed to say she’s sniffed it today and it’s lovely & sherbety.

Never did get around to buying a full bottle of Elixir — to me it always smelled like chocolate covered orange slices, bitter peel & cloves which I found very appealing during the winter. Need to give this a sniff since I do enjoy some sweet powder and I am in love with this bottle so very much.

Hermes flankers often don’t smell like the originals, I think, but they still do smell good! I’ll look forward to trying this.

Citrus and vanilla powder are a great combo–one of my favorites, especially when in such greats as Shalimar or Habit Rouge. I will definitely try this one!

It’s gotten to the point where I can’t even guess at what things will smell like based on their descriptions. “Powder” and “sparkling” sound like olfactory antonyms to me, but I’m very curious to try this one. I’m hoping that there are some sweet hay notes in the mix.

This sounds lovely. Soft and sparkling seems quite appealing about now and with the addition of vanilla, it appears it could be a winner. But I reserve the right to change my mind!

Just wore EdM today, and it did not fail to garner compliments, as it always does. Today was very hot, too, and it blooms wonderfully in the heat.
I recently snagged a bottle of the parfum on auction, and I’m feeling very lucky. On the one hand, it makes me happy that it doesn’t seem to be on anyone’s radar, so I got it for a song, but on the other hand, it makes me a little sad that so few people seem to value it highly.

This new version by JCE is certainly something to anticipate. I’m very interested in seeing how he will work his signature magic with this one!
