Mariah Carey Lollipop Bling Honey, Ribbon & Mine Again ~ new perfumes

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2010 54 Comments

Mariah Carey Lollipop Bling Honey, Ribbon & Mine Again

Mariah Carey will launch Lollipop Bling, a new trio of candy-inspired fragrances — Honey, Ribbon and Mine Again, each named for a Mariah Carey song — for women made in partnership with Topps, the makers of Ring Pops. Reportedly, Carey's husband Nick Cannon proposed with a ring hidden inside a Ring Pop package.

Honey ~ "An irresistible fragrance combined with a touch of Honey and Pineapple, creating a bright and sunny fragrance."

Ribbon ~ "A mouthwatering fragrance inspired by the flavor of the Blue Raspberry Ring Pop is combined with a beautiful floral bouquet."

Mine Again ~ "A combination of Chocolate Raspberry with a touch of Magnolia creates an addictive fragrance."

Mariah Carey Lollipop Bling Honey, Ribbon and Mine Again were developed by perfumer Laurent Le Guernec. They will be available in 30 ml, concentration unknown, for $35. The trio is due to launch in July. (quotes via mariahcarey, additional information via newyorktimes)

Huh. $35 is a little steep on a babysitting budget, isn’t it?

IIRC, it’s pretty close to what they charged for the 30 ml Harajuku Lovers … and would guess these are after a very similar audience. Personally I think it’s a great marketing idea, but that they’ve failed with the packaging, which just doesn’t quite capture that same “I must have it” combination of fun + cute.

Oh, and should have added that I think there will be smaller sizes (rollerballs & whatnot) later on.

That makes sense. I would have been all over that roller-ball at 11, if I could put down my Love’s Baby Soft for more than two seconds : )

You so right they totally lost me on the packaging. They should of designed it as a finger ring then it would of been interesting in a cute way.Their lack of imagination is appalling.

But seriously if I ever had to tell someone that I was wearing “Mariah Carey Lollipop Bling Honey” I would die of shame.

The honey one sounds best…so long as the pineapple isn’t too much.

Oh my dear, I hope not. I don’t want to support this creepy infantilization thing that Mariah’s been working lately. I mean, look at that ad! Homegirl is 40 years old, but still acting like she’s 15. Women over 22 can be sexy too! Hasn’t Helen Mirren taught us anything? I doubt that most of her fans are even young girls anymore, since her music has been of… lower quality in the last couple years.
Having said that, I will give it a try at Macy’s and will hopefully not have to eat my words :)

Ari – I thought the exact same thing when I saw the description and imagined the demographic these products would be promoted to. There’s definitely a marketing mismatch going on here.

I couldn’t agree with you more.I adore Helen Mirren and I used to think the same way. When we grow older we can still be sexy in a tasteful way.She is way too old for this ad why couldn’t she have a young lady in the ad instead like JLO did with Love at First Glow? It doesn’t always have to be about Mariah. The concept could of been appealing for young ladys I mean who doesn’t remeber enjoying finger rings. But, she just messed up the ad because she is just too old for this.

… sorry, the keyboard slipped away…
    so…
The perfumer (who I’m sure would rather prefer his name not to be displayed) is the same of SJP Lovely, obviously specialized in celebrities fragrances.
Now, Mariah Carey puts me off, whatever she does… Maybe it’s because she reached an age where smelling like a candy is somehow inappropriate?

Laurent Le Guernec has done some very successful fragrances, celebrity and otherwise, so don’t see why he would not want his name displayed!

Personally I don’t care about MC either way…and same is true for any celebrity scent. I don’t care who puts their name on it so long as it is good.

And, um, is Mariah photoshopped much in that image?! But so what – it’s her ad & she can do what she wants – right? I’ll have to sniff that honey one. I recently tried Colony, first time I ever smelled a pineapple note, and it was love at first sniff. Not that I expect this one to live up to that, but it could surprise me, and that would be cool.

Dude, that goes beyond photoshop! I think it’s an animated image. But Mimi is notorious for photoshopping. Which is terrible, because she is still SO GORGEOUS. I will never forgive all those cruel gossip magazines who dare to call her fat.

I’m obviously not the target, but I’ve never even heard of Ring Pops.

What I don’t understand is why? Why do young women/teens want to smell like candy? Chicken or egg — did marketing make them want to smell like candy, or do they have an innate desire to smell like candy instead of like a flower or whatever?

Well, a ring pop is… a lollipop on a ring. The lollipop part is inevitably in the shape of some gigantic jewel.

I sometimes think that the desire of teens and young women to smell like candy, or chocolate, or vanilla cupcakes, is because women aren’t allowed to eat those things any more because they are always watching their weight. Seriously.

I agree with you. The Joey New York company makes (or used to make, I’m not sure since I haven’t checked them out in a few years) lip glosses in mint and candy flavors advertised as aids to help women stick to their diets. Experts say that taste is mostly smell. Young women may be dousing themselves in caramel and cotton candy scents to make up for the fact that they don’t eat sweets.

That’s actually really interesting and — if there’s anything to it — very sad. You reminded me that I’ve heard some insane anecdotes about how some 7- or 8-year olds are apparently concerned with “watching their weight.” It’s like the sick flip side of the childhood obesity coin.

Because of the name, I would have rather the bottles go all-out and be in some kind of fantastical lollipop shape (upside down, with the atomizer being part of the stick?).

That being said, Mariah really might want to outgrow the candy&bubblesfantasia of not only her perfumes, but her persona. Couldn’t it have all ended with her mega-Glitter phase? She could, as we have seen glimpses of in the past, transform into a much more adult bombshell, but given her uber-girly leanings, I don’t forsee this in the future.

If I was 12 again I would be lusting over this in the pages of Young Miss magazine but as it stands none of them sound appealing to me. Also, my skin chemistry tends to make everything a bit sweeter so I shudder to think what would happen if I wore a candy fragrance!

I don’t know it’s easy to mock, and I’m sure these all smell extremely sweet but at least the combination of notes sound mildy interesting. Pineapple and honey? I kind of like that. I’ll at least sniff it, and I might try the other two as well, just to say I smelled them.

You Know what’s Kinda Scary/Funny/interesting… As Much as i LOATHE Ms. Carey (and let me tell you, I DO LOATHE HER!, Sorry Ms. Robin for such a strong Emotion) I was UTTERLY impressed with her previous Fragrances M and Luscious Pink! both were very well done and of a caliber that seemed less of the market it was directed at and definitely slightly more to the say Sephora/Ulta/Macy’s realm! these sound like a bunch of Saccharine Nonsense, but if done as well as her others they could be promising, especially the “Mine Again” with the whole Chocolate/Raspberry/Magnolia thing going on! but also, HOW TRITE these names are… Holy Lord!

Holy cow. I was squinting at this on my iPhone the other night, and it wasn’t until now, looking at my computer that I realised that was Mariah in the ad on the left. Now that’s Photoshop to the extreme! I wonder why so much? In her last ad, she was shopped per usual, but it was still obviously curvy Mariah. This is like a whole different person! Anyway, other than the hilariously bad name (sounds like a Kimora perfume name), the ad on the right is actually very cute, imo. And I do like that bottle colours – especially the one that is striped like that Escada LE from a couple years ago. I should probably disclose at this point that I LOVED watermelon ring pops when I was a kid!

Yeah theyre nothing to go crazy for. Theyre fine for what they are but still just blah. Honey smells like Live Luxe, which isnt an awful thing at all. Mine Again reminds me of Fantasy a bit. I prefer Fantasy. Ribbon is a fine raspberry scent. I prefer it to Circus Fantasys raspberry. Im waiting for a Forever & Ever! LOL! : )
