Celebrity fragrance news: Kim Kardashian, Charlotte Gainsbourg…

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2009 31 Comments

Kim Kardashian's debut scent will reportedly launch next spring, under licensing arrangements with Lighthouse Beauty (they're also doing Power by 50 Cent). Last year she said she was working with perfumer Caroline Sabas, but I don't know anything else about the perfume itself. According to Kardashian, the fragrance "really captures" who she is. (via wwd)

Older news, but in case you missed it:

Actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg will be the face of the upcoming fragrance from Balenciaga, due to launch in February 2010 under the auspices of Coty. (via prnewswire)

Supposedly, singer Amy Winehouse has been looking for a fragrance deal. (via cosmeticsinternational) And supposedly, rapper Ludacris has one already, with TAG fragrances. (via urbanmecca)

“It really captures who I am” = “They paid me a whole lot of money to put my name on something I’ve never even smelled that they pour from a vat.”

Eau d’Amy Winehouse = unwashed beehive hairdo, three-day cocaine hangover, bongwater, gin breath, and liquid eyeliner.

that’s like saying Timbuktu or Avignon actually literally smells like Bertrand Duchaufour.

I’ve never smelled him, so maybe they do.

My point was only that someone with an image problem as disastrous as Amy Winehouse’s is going to have a bit of trouble marketing a scent. Britney Spears seems to be doing okay in the perfume department, but she had an established fan base and a specific image to trade on before it all went to hell.

An Amy Winehouse scent will sell big, regardless of her personal life. She was hugely popular before she went downhill, and she looks poised for a major comeback in the very near future. Her issues with drugs really didn’t affect my opinion on her talents (I’m actually in favor of the legalization of all drugs in small amounts and treating “offenses” at the mental health level, not the criminal level). But I digress. Her music is absolutely brilliant.. that voice, it gets me every time. I’d go so far as to say an Amy Winehouse scent, given a quality and decent perfume as the result, would outsell most other celeb fragrances.

Kardashian, however.. well, I still don’t even know who she is.

I agree. She has a lot of people who adore her and respect her.

and maybe it’s not even supposed to be a huge release like Britney’s either… maybe more on the scale of Alan Cumming’s.

Kardashian is famous the way Paris Hilton is famous.

She is also well known for starring in a sex tape she made with her then boyfriend Ray J (an R&B singer of sorts, brother of more famous R&B singer Brandy)…which to me seemed to be a ploy for attention.

So if the scent “really captures” who she is…I am wondering what that is supposed to be.

Although I do like that she is considered to be a sexy female and does not fit into the ‘stick skinny’ category.

If Kim Kardashian’s fragrance smells anything like what she must have smelled like after her sex tape was made, it’ll smell like urine.

Pyramus, so far as I know she does not actually have a contract.

Oh, images in my mind of how the Kim K. bottle design could work… Would it be rather bottom heavy? And Amy Winehouse? Sorry. I love her music, but think her perfume would end up being more an unappealing “fragrance concept” rather than something you’d actually *want* to wear. Unless you want to smell like you’ve been on a week long bender with no stops for hygiene along the way. Blech… :P

Which means it will end up being some vapid sugarly sweet floral with Amy airbrushed to look conscious and alert in all the ads. I’d say vintage and classic even, but airbrushing and Photoshop can only do so much. Hmm. That should be some really humorous ad copy. Is that what happens when I put an extra slug of snark in my coffee? Goodness. :D

What comes to mind is the odor that seeps through my skin for three days after I eat the garlic that is cooked along with either shrimp or crawfish when I’ve attended a “boil”. To me, that would be an Amy Winehouse scent. Can you imagine what her skin smells like from the way she treats her body?

I know I read this, but I don’t know reliable it is, so take this with a grain of salt obvs
supposedly, Amy/her people want a smokey 1950’s scent to reflect her style.
but according to that article, she hadn’t found a perfumer/someone to distribute it yet.
A really good perfumer could do it for all we know.

I guess your skin naturally smells like lilacs and roses?

How your skin smells (not including environmental factors that attach to your skin) is very much the result of what you ingest or inhale as well as factors such as hygiene practices, general health and genetics… as for roses and lilacs? I like to think so, but others might very well dispute that claim. I don’t really know anything about AW’s music, but the images and headlines that thrust themselves into my awareness (thanks mostly to AOL) lead me to believe that AW’s personal practices would render her “personal scent” to be unpleasant. Someone mentioned that she was cleaning her act up some…and I hope she is, what I’ve seen sure looks self-destructive and then it won’t matter how talented she is if she ends up dead.

Her skin probably smells like mine did when I was closer to being in her shoes. I kept myself fairly clean and maybe smelled a little boozy. A little smoky. Maybe a little sweaty. Always perfumed. No old garlic.

I would want to smell her perfume, for sure – especially if they do something kind of retro. Super-happy if she is truly poised for a comeback – I love her music and think she is actually a unique talent, unlike some of these famous-for-being-famous disaster cases.

I can certainly see her perfume being retro, given how retro her music is. I love her voice! The rest…well as long as she keeps singing the way she does, I don’t care about the rest. Artists need to be trainwrecks sometimes–it helps them produce good art!

Agree…I don’t much care about how musicians spend their time or what they do outside the music.

Reading this makes me wonder what a Scritti Politti fragrance by Green Gartside would smell like…

Amy Winehouse looks great in the most recent pics – cleaned up, healthier weight, clear skin. I’d love to see what she comes up with.

Actually, “skank” could apply to Kim Kardashian, at least of the photos I’ve seen of her.

I was going to suggest “Eau de Heau,” but I still think Paris Hilton should use that one.

      Stepping off snarkbox now. . . .

I’m also looking forward to the new Balenciaga.

By Kilian’s “Back To Black” is an Amy W. inspired fragrance. I haven’t sampled it yet, but the notes listed over at Luckyscent sound compelling.
