Tom Ford Arabian Wood ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2009 33 Comments

Tom Ford Private Blend Arabian Wood fragranceTom Ford has introduced Arabian Wood, the latest fragrance to join the Private Blend Collection (it has reportedly been exclusive to a Tom Ford boutique in Kuwait for some time):

Custom-blended for a well-known Arabian sheik, this woody chypre was inspired by the extraordinary confluence of the Middle East's past and present aromatic wonders.

Capturing the mystique of Arabia, a rare combination of precious woods, opulent green notes, rich florals, and exotic spices provides a footprint or modernity outlined in ethnic tradition.

The notes feature lavender, Bulgarian rose, freesia, orange blossom, galbanum, bergamot, rose de mai, ylang ylang, rose absolute, jasmine, gardenia, honey, orris, patchouli, cedar, oak moss, sandalwood, tonka bean and amber.

Tom Ford Private Blend Arabian Wood is available now at Neiman Marcus in 50 ($180) and 250 (currently shown as $270 but the usual price is $450 so I assume it is a mistake) ml Eau de Parfum. (via neimanmarcus)

Update: yep, the 250 ml is $450. And, see a review of Tom Ford Arabian Wood.

      Whew, then you’re more up-to-date than I am! I haven’t smelled quite a few.

From the more recent TF releases, this was my favorite. It smells like Homage by Amouage (you know the tragically expensive one!?) – taif style roses, woods and frankincense wrapped up in a bright, candied, aoud-esque aura. And it’s more affordable than Homage – imagine that? :)

Ah, then perhaps I do need to smell it. Homage was lovely.

I thought I was impervious to any seduction by the TFPBs, but Mike’s description just made my ears perk up and my decant-sensors start whirling.

Yes, although if you smelled Homage, anything else would probably be a let down, right? The quality of the materials in Homage is incredible.

Sure, but I smelled Homage on a card in Aedes during a marathon sniff session. It was beautiful, but I don’t think my olfactory memory is that good. ;) I could easily delude myself with this “poor” man’s Homage.

LOL ooh, oh, oh…laughing so hard at the very idea of TF’s new anything being referred to as “a poor man’s _ _ _ _ “….whatever

Just not words you ever expected to hear together, you know?

What?! Arabian Wood smells like Homage Attar? A pretender to the throne? I must seek an audience with Arabian Wood, and see if it’s all “fur coat/no knickers” or if it’s the real deal. I’m no stranger to owning 7 different iterations of basically the same perfume…

I’d like the knickers to be optional…. fur coats can get tickley

What an amazing phrase that is. Kind of ironic, too, considering that a lot of people would probably quite fancy that as an outfit on someone special ;)

Uh-oh, lavender. Love it in real life – but not so in perfume… yet, anyway.

Yeah. The “woody chypre” part started to reel me in, but the lavender repels me. There are some scents better left on the flower.

Perhaps it’s not very strong in this one, who knows.

Well, and if it isn’t the main note I don’t think it would be too distracting. And who am I to talk? After not liking Serge Lutens Gris Clair forever and ever for being too straight-up lavender, it finally grew on me over the weekend. (I had a headache, lavender seemed like the obvious choice.) Once I got past the initial blast o’ lavender, the dry down was delicious! So who knows? Maybe I can grow to love this one, too. (Although at those prices, I’d just as soon not.)

It could just be me, but is anyone else getting a little weary of all the fragrances in the Private Blend collection? I mean, there’s just so *many* now that it’s becoming simply more inaccessible than ever to the casual passerby. =/

Or maybe that’s exactly their intention.

YES! 12 was too many to begin with, and they’re released 3 already this year, plus we’re going to get those 4 White Musk scents. Way too much product.

*Getting* weary? I think I was weary from the ‘get-go’. Too many and too pricey = kiss of death.

Being a big TF fan, I was dissapointed by this one. I didnt find anything Arabian or wood in this whatsoever. Does it smell like Amouage Homage (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE)…no. At least not to my nose.

Thanks Carlos. I’m not a big TF fan (or at least, not a big TFPB fan) … will have to try this one, but not in any big rush.

If you’re dying for the Bois Marocain, might be worth a call to the TF boutique in NY, they might have it.

Just By The By, Madamoiselle Robin… If i were interested in posting a review of a fragrance on here, how would i go about doing so? I have read many of the ones on here and i think i’d like to write a couple myself… Just wondering.

We really don’t post reviews from anyone other than our few contributors…and we’re not looking for anyone else at the moment, sorry! You can always send me a sample review to keep on file for when we are looking for new people, or you can post reviews at places like MakeupAlley or Basenotes. And I’m pretty sure there are blogs that take contributions from occasional contributors.

I was able to get a bottle from NM, which has now corrected the price (back up to $450), but they still honored my purchase price at $270 (sans tax). It just arrived and I’m eager to try it (as I open the shipping box with great anticipation. . . .).

This is one of my FAVORITE pics from this line. SO much so that I bought the 250ml of it, and I will never use it all. If you would like a decant please email me and I will share some with you at a fraction of the cost.

Was in Selfridges in London today & noticed that they have started selling about 6 of the most popular private blends in 100ml bottles (longer & thinner than the current square bottles & more like the TF mainline shape). Currently you pay £110 for 50ml & £250 for the 250ml decanter, but these 100ml are pitched between the 2 at £160. Must be annoying you have bought a 50ml bottle when now you can get twice the amount for £50 more! Oddly haven’t seen these new sizes mentioned anywhere, not even on the TF website – they seem to have sneaked them out!

hehe 30ml would be good – especially at a more wallet friendly price – though i guess Tom Ford will never be ‘affordable’! The assistant told me that its goodbye also to Velvet Gardenia, Bois Rouge, Moss Breches, Purple Patchouli & Neroli Portofino in this range which are now discontiued & will disappear once current stock sells through :-( ) Velvet Gardenia always seemed to get good reviews & comments & i never got a chance to try it :-((

They always said they’d only keep 12 on the market at any given time, I think? So I was expecting some of them would get axed.
