Like Dracula

Posted by Robin on 28 May 2009 19 Comments

I have never understood why women wear perfume on their wrists. I never smell a women’s wrist, I always go for her neck, like Dracula.

— Actor Dustin Hoffman, on the red carpet outside last night's Fifi Awards ceremony. Quoted in What's That Smell? 'Rosy' Paris Hilton, 'Edible' Queen Latifah Reek Up the Fragrant 'FiFi' Awards at The New York Observer. Thanks to Jessica for the link!

Dustin Hoffman is great, isn’t he? I loved him in Last Chance Harry. So true! I spray my wrists out of habit, but really focus on neck, chest, torso. And when I wear fragrance for *me* (especially testing), I spray the back of my hand and lower arm- it’s discreet and easy to sniff that way. 🙂 …all right, enough chatter, back to work I go! 😉

I like him too, but I have not seen that!

Guilty! I always spray my wrists, neck and chest. I always do the nape of neck too, thinking that maybe my hair will smell better for it.

I do love Dustin Hoffman. If you haven’t seen Stranger than Fiction, a little movie that came out kind of quietly a few years ago, I recommend it (especially if you were an English major). He is quite funny in it.

I have not — will add it to Netflix queue.

stranger than fiction is a great movie!
I also liked the writer character.
And some thoughts on the phrase “Little did he know…” I don’t know English that very well so those insights were quite helpful. (I watched it in English)
        Wow. Must see it again:)))

I don’t know why but that being quoted from Dustin Hoffman gave me the heebie-jeebies. lol I like his character portrayals but as a personality I think he’s creepy.
Myself, when I wear my daily perfume: if there’s major sillage, I spray it in the air and walk through it; lesser sillage, I spray the back of my neck and my cleavage – not for any sexual reasons but because those are the two warmest spots on my body and my body heat tends to “renew” the fragrance throughout the day. The only time I wear fragrance on my wrists is when I’m testing them.

I’ve gotten so used to wearing perfumes on my forearms and the backs of my hands for testing that it’s almost all I do now. Makes it easier to smell myself 🙂

Me too, I only put perfume on my wrists when I’m trying it out. My favorite place to actually wear perfume is the nape of my neck; then when my DH hugs me, he usually says, “Mm, you smell nice. . .”

My bad – meant to write Last Chance Harvey. I saw him at Brown U once – seemed very normal to me 🙂

I got a huge chuckle out of this comment by Hoffman. Perhaps Hoffman could have have offered this remark to his wife Lisa Hoffman who was a FiFi finalist for her Japanese Agarwood and Madagascar Orchid. Her free samples of the nominated frags were tiny strips of the fragrances…hardly enough to cover a wrist, much less, the neck!!!!

      Really, no liquid samples? Shame.

The samples came in the little fabiric-y blotter things – similar to Avon samples. But the Japanese Agarwood was wonderful for all of the 10 minutes I could smell it.

Hmmm… maybe the habit came from the time when men would kiss the back of a woman’s hand instead of shaking hands. In that case, he would get a nice whiff during the process. Where I apply depends on how strong the scent it – major sillage, it gets a discreet dab on the wrists and maybe the nape of the neck; midrange sillage gets the wrists, neck, cleavage; light sillage (think “splash” scents) gets the wrist, neck, cleavage, behind the knees, and my hair.

I think that Tuberose Gardenia has decent sillage, but it fades sort of quickly from my skin, so I tend to hit my hair and some fabric so it lasts longer.

      Hair & fabric usually work.

The wrist is a pulse point, like the neck. Doesn’t applying to pulse points help distribute the scent? I think the issue for me is washing my hands probably eliminates the scent pretty quickly.

That’s the theory. I’ve never really believed it but then I’ve never really tested it either.
