Meeemries…, part 2

Posted by Robin on 9 February 2009 33 Comments

When I posted the Jontue video last week, Jessica brought up a scent that I thought I'd never heard of, Le Jardin de Max Factor, fronted by Jane Seymour. This brought it all back.

That name always made me laugh — it might as well have been “Le Jardin de… Bob Schwartz.” I have no memory of what it smelled like, but how could one forget Jane Seymour's breathless delivery?!

Ahhh!! Thank you, Robin! I wore this fragrance for a few year in the early 80s, and I loved the magazine ads with Jane Seymour. She was the epitome of beauty, to me! :)

I remember the song, but not the Jane Seymour bit. She looks and sounds exactly like Keira Knightley to me!

I think that's being insulting to Jane Seymour, lol…

This just beamed me back to being about 13. It smelled revolting, if I remember correctly.

Strictly speaking we should thank Kenneth Salt, who has quite the collection of 80s commercials at YouTube:

And I remember thinking she was beautiful too! Her look is now almost overwhelmingly dated, no? The permed hair, the bold eyeshadow…

Thank you, Kenneth Salt, wherever you are! :)

I also love the soft focus used in the Jontue ad *and* the Jardin de Max Factor ad. So gauzy!!

There was a frag ad from back in the day that impressed me as *very* sophisticated when I saw it as a young girl. I can't even imagine what it was, but a woman was laying in bed in some glamorous bedroom, and her lover was zipping up some castle road in a sports car. She apparently realized he was on his way, changed into some teddy or something and dabbed some of this frag on her neck, etc, and waited for him to kiss her awake….Any takers?

So many old commercials really crack me up, even though they were never intended to be funny. I love the faux Brel-Aznavour-esque singing in the background — not even a jingle, really, just the words “Le Jardin” sung in hokey 'chanson' style.

It's funny to think just how MUCH television we watched when I was a kid/teen. Thank goodness I haven't spent hours on YouTube looking up ads. However, one of the biggest kicks I've gotten in months was watching one posted on another site: The ca. 1980 Kmart ad with the song “I Know a Place… Where Life is Good…” There are so many. Thanks for these, Robin.

This brings back such memories… I thought Jane was sooooooo sophisticated! This very much reminds me of one of those old Gloria Vanderbilt perfume commercials from around the same time. The woman is at a party or something, watching a swan on a lake or something like that. I do remember the tagline clearly, though – “let it release the splendor of you!”

My guess would be Scoundrel or Vanderbilt.

This 1984 ad for Coty Wild Musk really takes the cake. I think they ripped off Blue Lagoon or Scandal's “Warrior” video. I think that's Jill Schoelen, too.

Gosh, I watched much less as a teen than my son does now (course, he isn't a teen yet, but still). There wasn't nearly as much youth programming on.

OMG, I remember my sister in law and her sisters all wore this when I was a little kid. Is it still sold? Then years later I had a boyfriend who loved it even though I never wore it.

This was my mother's signature scent for years, until it was finally dc'd. I even went so far as to buy the entire stock (12 bottles) from a St Louis Walgreens over 10 years ago when I found some there unexpectedly, just so I could keep gifting her with it on her birthday and for Xmas. Recently I started craving a bottle myself and finally caved into buying a large one at a local mall kiosk for a mere $30. I'm still glad I did!

her commercial for Kay Jewelers was just on tv
I like how he drops the French accent when he says “Max Factor”

LOL — they spent about $9.99 on that set, and maybe another $9.99 on the costumes.

I don't think they sell it still…I saw a few bottles here & there online but assume they're vintage. But I'm not sure!

It seemed familiar to me, but whether that means I saw it in the past or it's just kind of par for the course, I can't say!

I had a friend who totally modeled her “look” after this commercial with the flowery flowing dresses (with lots of pink) and big hair. Billowy clouds of Le Jardin would follow her around, this commercial was a hoot!

I didn't wear Le Jardin when it was around, but I did like the Rose scent Max Factor made – Le Fleur Rose. Sure wish I could remember how it smelled, but it is long gone!

I am pretty sure that it is still in production. I swear I have seen it in the chemists before. I could be hallucinating on all the cheap perfume fumes though!
