Discover your world of fragrance

Posted by Robin on 6 November 2008 31 Comments

UK travel retail chain World Duty Free has teamed up with Roja Dove to create a new website that promises to find your perfect perfume:

Created by Roja Dove, the world’s only Professeur de Pafurms [sic], this new website will help you discover your fragrance personality and explore new fragrances that will perfectly suit you and your destination. Simply input where you are going in the world and whether you are travelling for business, romance or simply pleasure and you’ll receive a Roja recommendation of a selection of fragrances bespoke to you that will be the perfect accompaniment for your trip.

Just as your travel wardrobe should differ for a business trip to New York as it would for a romantic break in Paris, your fragrance choice can differ too - and according to Roja this is where most of us miss a trick. Just as you wouldn’t pack a little black dress for board room meetings in New York or a business suit for a beach break in Sydney, Roja advises you to apply the same thinking to your fragrance to help you effortlessly blend in.

Fun idea, but you're only allowed to visit Cape Town, Dubai, Los Angeles, Marrakech, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sydney, or Tokyo! Guess Roja can't help me with my romantic getaway to Scranton…

No, and I don't know who can help you with that ;-)

Sadly it only recommended to me three frags for New York that are easily available at my sad local department store….. Maybe I'll have better luck in Dubai…

Well it's never been my goal to effortlessly blend in so I suppose this will be of no help to me. :-)
You know, I suppose I should be glad for anything that gets people interested in fragrance and shows them how to begin thinking about exploring that world without feeling overwhelmed, but there is something about this project that just…infuriates me. I suppose it has something to do with the idea that there is a “right thing” applicable to everyone.

Haha, I may be a Brit but I have been to Denny's in Scranton and have happy memories of their all day cheese omelette with a cup of fruit!

I am off to Berlin on business but in the absence of Berlin I put Paris, and got Samsara. If it had put romance in Paris it would have offered me JPG Classique. And that is Mr Dove's idea of “getting lucky”? I will stick to Scandal thank you very much…

Never been to Scranton, and my only association (besides Joe Biden) is The Office. Not a good booster for the town.

I assume it only recommends what they're selling in duty free, right? So you're probably not going to find anything obscure.

A, we're seeing more & more of these computerized selling tools, no doubt because of the massive amount of product. I wonder if they really help? No idea.

On my first try, with Marrakech as my destination, it actually recommended Mitsouko for Romance. Coincidentally, I wore Mitsouko yesterday for my taxi mom and dinner cooking duties in California. '~)
This site reminds me of walking into a perfume dept. and the SA that you have never met asks you what type of fragrances you like. My response of “I like all fragrances” usually flusters them. Then I proceed to tell them which specific scents I want to sniff. It doesn't stop them from offering their latest 'push this' fume.

This website is funny… if I go to Dubai for romance I should wear Mitsouko… but if I go to Tokyo for business I should wear… also Mitsouko.
I actually AM going to Dubai in a few months, where I hope to explore the perfume souk and buy something traditional (though I am not sure how “traditional” anything is in such a reinvented, modern, glitzy place). I guess there is only one way to find out… it'll be fun to go exploring.

See, Mitsouko works everywhere. Too bad more dept store SAs aren't pushing it ;-)

Seriously! I went into Bloomies to sniff L'Heure Bleue and the woman tried to sell me on Marc Jacobs, the original, and Cartier So Pretty instead. Now they were lovely, but how in the world do you go from L'Heure Bleue to Marc Jacobs and So Pretty?

Yes, I love Mitsouko! So glad I picked it up in SF as my half marathon reward.

I told a Guerlain SA recently I loved Apres L'Ondee so she tried to sell me Insolence. Hello?

Now I can readily imagine a similar site from Luca Turin, where Mitsouko actually is the answer to every combination….

Insolence is at least vaguely related to Apres l'Ondee, although agree you wouldn't necessarily like Insolence because you like AlO. Still, better than some.

I thought it looked a little gimmicky, but I tried a couple of options and it threw up perfumes that I have owned. Hmm…but note the past tense…. *chuckle* Spiffy website anyway. Thought it was fun.

I'm raring to go! I hope to take lots of pictures and find interesting souvenirs, especially at the perfume and spice souks. Not sure about being able to chat while there, but I will definitely report back on my findings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
