Posted by Robin on 26 September 2007 23 Comments

Gap Individuals fragrance collection

The Gap has introduced the Individuals collection:

Under your clothes there's you. Your spirit. Your sense of character. Your aspirations. Your fantasies. Here lives the essence of who you are, how you define yourself to the world. Gap Individuals invites you to give name to this inner life-- The person you are inside and out.

There are four fragrances:

The Natural ~ "The scent of harmony and comfort". Notes include bergamot, thyme and vetiver.

The Original ~ "The scent of self-invention", featuring black leather, plum and earthy cedarwood.

The Visionary ~ "The scent of innovation and intrigue", with notes of bluegrass, sun-dried geranium and frosted fennel.

The Lover ~ "The scent of passion and desire", with apricot skin, mint leaf and patchouli.

The Gap Individual fragrances are $35 each for 100 ml Eau de Toilette. (via gap)

Other recent fragrances from The Gap: Gap Body Coconut Tuberose, Lavender Tea, White Amber, Mandarin Jasmine, Velvet Bloom & Washed Cotton, G7 Mixed, Bold, Spiked.

The Original and The Lover sound like smthg I might like. We probably won't be getting them here, though. We never got previous scents – except, that year, Grass, etc. I got a solid of that. It was nice.

I have liked some of their scents in the past, but whew, they've been busy this year — I think they've launched almost 20 new fragrances? Too many to bother going into the store to smell them!!

There's only one necessary question, IMO:
Which smells the most like Gap Grass?
(The ad copy is even more astounding than usual.)

Yeah, I've also liked some of their past scents, which tended to be much better than a lot of other mass-market chain store offerings. (Way nicer than all that horrid tutt-frutti Victoria's Secret stuff) I used to really like one called Om and one called Heaven – both of which are discontinued now, of course! Haven't tried anything of theirs recently, but these all sound interesting. The bottles and script on them remind me a lot of Comme de Garcons Odeur 53, for some reason.

“The Gap Individuals.” That's my favorite oxymoron of the day… so far!

    Astute observation, Stanzi.

Went to my local Gap to try some of the other scents recently released, but they said I'd have to go to another Gap outlet because they didn't have the square footage to feature all those fragrances. What? How big of a footprint do bottles make? And isn't the profit margin on them worthwhile?

I actually did love the Om/Grass/Dream/Heaven scents, years ago… although, if I recall correctly, the Gap acquired them from another company and added their own logo!

Odd that some Gap stores would carry the new fragrances and others wouldn't. They're usually so uniform! That's why those stores give me the willies.

Are these four new ones unisex or feminine? It's hard to tell from the notes.

Sorry — should have included that — they are all meant to be unisex.

From the notes, my guess would be none of them! They really ought to bring back Grass, everyone loves it.

Ooooh, you're so right about the CdG-ish bottles!

Wow, I'm surprised they aren't in all stores too. But you know, they must take up lots of space — there are TONS of them now. Haven't they launched a whole new chain of stores devoted just to bath & body?

I was sort of smirking at that, too.

I did see these at the Gap a few days ago. There was at least one more fragrance – The Artist. I wonder why it wasn't mentioned in the press release? Is The Artist pre-existing?

I haven't run across these new ones, but I used to love Heaven way back when, and would happily shell out dough for a slightly higher quality version. I also liked the soliflore releases they had a few years ago: I picked up a bottle of Peony, and the Cassis . Both were very nice.

Gap does still sell Heaven :) I saw it in-store a few days ago, and it is available online too: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?searchCID=25781&pid=158161&scid=158161012&vid=-1

I do wish Grass was still around though! Only managed to get a body lotion of that one.

This is from their website, not a press release…and there is a description there of “Artist”, but no bottles for sale so didn't include it. Perhaps there were production problems?

I meant to go try those soliflores, but never got around to it. I heard some of them were really well done.

When I saw so many comments on this thread, I thought a lot of them might be less than complimentary — but pleasantly surprised that so many have such good opinions of Gap fragrances. These “Individuals” sound interesting (curious about “The Original”).

I'm still nurturing what remains of my bottle of Grass. You're correct in wondering why they just don't bring it back! How hard can it be, and it seems like it would sell, no? I think my early love of Grass prepared me to like CBIHP's “Wild Pansy” so much.

I'll have to search your archives for your and reader's takes on Gap's Banana Republic line; I like some of what they do as well.

You know, I've never tried any of the BR scents, mostly for the same reason I've not tried the newer Gaps: you can't get samples. BR did hand out little pochettes when they launched the set of 5 last year, but I find pochettes useless so tossed them. It always cracks me up how much easier you can get a sample of something from Serge Lutens or whatever than from someplace like BR or Gap.

I just bought “The Artist” today from this line. I still can't figure out why it's not listed on the Gap website unless it was a last minute addition. I almost bought “The Natural” initially, but then I realized it smells very much like a milder version of Comme des Garcons' “PLAY”.

Incidentally, the new men's “G7” cologne line at Gap was an extreme letdown. One of them smelled like a complete ripoff of Polo Sport, while the other smelled like the old Gap BLUE No. 655 that they've always had, just in this new G7 packaging and with a new name. oh well.

Maybe their web designer messed up?? No idea! Will have to get to the mall & try these…
