Prince 3121 ~ celebrity perfume news

Posted by Robin on 10 May 2007 24 Comments

Prince 3121 Perfume

Prince, the musician formerly known as "the artist formerly known as Prince", but now back to being just Prince, is going to launch a new fragrance. Unless it is all an elaborate joke, in which case, it would be a good one.

The scent is to be named 3121, is a "a kaleidoscope of rich florals", and will launch on 7/7/07. Check out the website, complete with promotional song and the tag line "purple will reign", along with the invitation to "join us to participate in our Global Charity Event". (first quote and news via contactmusic, image and additional information via 3121perfume.com)

I should point out that the Contact Music site has turned out to be wrong in the past about upcoming fragrances from musicians (they claimed in 2005 that Madonna would release a perfume in conjunction with her Defying Gravity tour, and I reported it here but it never materialized). The existence of the website seems to support the idea that something is up.

Update: it is a definite! And per Women's Wear Daily, 7% of sales on the launch date will be donated to 7 charities. Prince 3121 will "...come in an emerald-cut-diamond-shaped bottle with a purple hue", and the "white floral fragrance was blended by Adriana Medina at Givaudan and combines notes of jasmine, gardenia, muguet and tuberose, with patchouli and sandalwood".

Prince 3121 fragrance bottleUpdate 2: a longer description of the Prince 3121 fragrance:

3121 is a white floral scent that opens with a refreshing sparkle of crisp bergamot, opulent jasmine and gardenia. Orange flower and muguet sensually intertwine with tuberose and ylang ylang, creating a subtle, mysterious blend; evolving into notes of patchouli and creamy sandalwood. Precious cedarwood and luxurious musks complement this sexy scent with an almost surreal draw that tugs at all senses for total captivation.

Prince 3121 will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum ($31.21-$70), Xquisite Perfume purse spray and Xotic Body Crème. (via press release on Yahoo Finance)

Update 3: Prince will launch 3121 with a concert at Macy's in Minneapolis.

Oh no! I have been living in Las Vegas for the past three months (Dallas is home) and I was so happy to see Prince go. I can't imagine seeing him on perfume counters, too…right next to Celine Dion. Someone should save these people from themselves.

One does have to wonder why he did not name the scent “Purple Rain”.
Apropos of absolutely nothing, Robin, have you seen this?

If it turns out to be a lavender-hued fruity floral sold at Macy's, I'm going to have a good laugh!

Good point, Purple Rain would have been more evocative than 3121. Although should add that if 3121 has some Prince-related significance, I'm not aware of it.

Had not seen that series, but scanned it quickly and it looks like a nice basic introduction to how fragrances come to market.

http://www.3121.com is Prince and the NPG homepage. I think 3121 refers to a nightclub and it might have been the title of his last album. Not sure as I gave up listening to him after Purple Rain. Anyways, the numbers have some significance to him.

The perfume looks like it's a definite. It is mentioned on the 3121 webpage. Now if he had released it during the late 80's you might have gotten a sexy musky scent. Now? Probably your typical rose based floral.

Still sort of hoping it is a huge joke, but you're probably right that it isn't. And you're right, it was the name of an album — should have googled it earlier.

Prince is quite diminutive in stature…perhaps that was the joke?

I am trying to think of something with lots of coconut but doesn't smell pina colada/suntan oil, and coming up blank at the moment. If something comes to mind later, will come back!

There is BBW Coconut Lime Verbena, but don't think it is in a spray perfume. I do like the body lotion.

So sorry you didn't like it! Not sure I love it either, but in general, more people complain about the reverse: perfumes that are too short lived.

Prince was a sight for sore eyes in Macy's today. I sprayed his perfume on from head to toe, right there in the store. I felt so sexy! I love the fragrance! It has low notes of fresh lilac. Prince is so fine! A very classy man.
