Oooh – I think I might get that Caron, but really, I wish they'd put a bit more thought into that design – it's so boring!!

I was very surprised. Nobody is going to be buying it for the bottle, that is for sure — although it isn't a great picture. Perhaps it has some charm that is lost in the image (?)

It is not traditional looking in a since of a square shape bottle, but it just might supprise one of us.

Hi, I'm a newbie to fragrance blogs! I was intrigued by the O article about creating a fragrance wardrobe – their suggestions were Armani Code, Delices de Cartier, Missoni Profumi (chocolate), Jean Patou Sira des Indes, and Ferragamo Encanto Charms. I've worn mostly Chanel No 5 over the years with forays into Demeter for fun. Amarige and the original Lauren smell awful on me.

So, I'd like to build my own fragrance wardrobe. I don't like heavy patchouli or heavy jasmine. Currently I have started with: Armani Code, Ferragamo Encanto Charms, Chanel No 5, Demeter Gingerale for fun, and am contemplating Cartier So Pretty. Am I on the right track? What else should round out my fragrance wardrobe? Willing to try anything except boring – no Eternity or Obsession or ckOne or other scents that were done to death!! Thanks.

Whaaa…where did this Caron LE come from?? This wasn't even vaguely on my radar; it hasn't been on Escentual's News page; it's not on their New Arrivals page. And the photo on Escentual looks like it was done furtively with a camera phone, while the Caron people were off powdering their noses. It also sounds like it has all the notes I like – I am craving liquorice like nobody's business these days. This is surreal.

Hi and welcome! My one objection to the list is that it is almost all fruity florals. If that is the only kind of fragrance you like, it is fine, but otherwise I would think you would want some different kinds of things — a citrus perhaps, or something green, or maybe a nice white floral? Go here and scroll down:

    http://www.art-et-parfum.com/parfmond.htm

and you'll see the different fragrance families with some examples of each.

LOL — exactly! They are trying to sneak one by on us. And no mention of it on the Caron website. It is almost like they found of vat of a forgotten and never released scent and just bottled it up & shipped it out.

Thanks, that is exactly the type of help I was looking for! I do want to branch out beyond my comfort zone. So … any suggestions for a citrus in particular, as summer is approaching?

    Worth trying:

    Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien

    Cartier Eau d'Cartier

    Lancome O de Lancome

    Guerlain Eau de Guerlain

    L'Occitane Verbena

Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Nil

Thierry Mugler Cologne (unisex, but often found at the men's counter)

    Comptoir Sud Pacifique O'Pomelo

    Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue

Jo Malone Orange Blossom or Lime, Basil Mandarin

….printing out and heading to nearest Sephora … Thanks so much! From the list you linked me to, I've decided that I probably don't like Orientals, as I've never liked Tabu, Shalimar, Obsession, or Opium. That in and of itself is helpful for me. Was the Oprah list that I posted a “good” list, or just her writer shilling for the new perfumes that are out?

A few of those will require a department store. Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus would have the Annick Goutal. Neiman Marcus would also have the Jo Malone. The O de Lancome should be at any Lancome counter.

It is a list of recent department store releases. It is probably as good as any if you like fruity florals. I don't, as it happens, so no surprise that my favorite of that list is the one with the least fruit, Armani Code.

    Happy shopping!

The Caron has me worried. LE? Caron has been so good about not discontinuing beloved fragrances, and now, just like all the other cynical fragrance companies, they've entered the now-you-see-it-now-you-don't marketing arena. This along with planning to move the NYC boutique into the back of a hair salon AND reformulating several scents gives me a sinking feeling.

Thanks, Nowsmellthis. I really liked the D&G Light Blue. And I also got L'Occitane Green Tea and Aquolina Chocolovers (cheesy packaging). I think I'm liking some food scents, but I'm trying not to be super cheesy about it :-). Also liked Miss Dior Cherie and Chocolate Mat. Got a free sample of Prada with my purchase; a bit too heavy and old-lady smelling for me. Tried Cool Water; smelled fine when sprayed on a tester strip, smelled awful on me! I also confirmed that I just don't like orientals at all.

Any other suggestions you might have?

T, the move is soon, isn't it? It is a very odd thing to do. It will be so off the beaten path, for a perfume shopper anyway. I will have to walk over at least once to see what it looks like.

Don't know what to say about Reglisse. If they are out to make a quick buck, they need to do a much better job of advertising it.

Well, sounds like you've already built up something close to a perfume wardrobe! Personally, I would live with what you have before you buy any thing else, but then perhaps explore some white florals, or branch out into some of the more unusual niche scents.

I just got back from my own 1-day sniffa marathon in NYC this past week and had a chance to smell this Caron. It was at the Caron counter at Barney's but I don't remember seeing it at the Caron boutique or at the Caron counter of Bendel's. The Barney's girl told me that Reglisse was the new fragrance but didn't mention it being limited edition. I quite liked it but didn't find it anything too special. I didn't try it on skin but thought the anise was very muted from the card she sprayed for me.

Robin, I'd also like to thank you for introducing me to the wonderful world of perfume addiction. I splurged on two bottles at Aedes (Ecume and Bahiana)– something I've never done before! :)

Oops, also wanted to say that the girl told me the bottle shape shown on the Escentual website was just a working copy right now and she assured me that it wasn't going to look like that when it was released. Beats me how Escentual has it already though.

Thanks so much for commenting! So — what you smelled was a tester than? It wasn't for sale yet? I didn't even remember that Barneys had a Caron counter, although I know there is one at Bergdorf Goodman. At any rate, happy to see that this fragrance really does exist!

And congrats on your new bottles, great choices!! I've been meaning to get a bottle of Bahiana for ages, and hopefully will do it this summer.

Oh, if the Alfred Sung Bijou smells anything like it should I will have to have it – black raspberry! Not a note one sees very often in perfumes – not sure I have ever seen it, but it's a big favorite of mine – to smell and to eat! Add gardenia and coconut and I am in. I don't think I have ever bought a Sung before, just had samples, but that could change now.

I will probably live to regret saying this, but the Daisy Fuentes fragrances actually sounds good to me. We'll see how the quality is before passing judgement.

As much as I love virtually all the Caron fragrances, I do not want to smell like licorice, so I think I will pass on Reglisse. However, I am sure I will try it at a store just out of curiosity. I have a feeling it would actually smell better on a man.

Another oops! I meant Bergdorf. Right beside the JAR boutique, right? Yes, I assume it was a tester. Didn't get too much information on it since I wasn't too interested. Curious that I didn't see it anywhere else though; I would have thought the Caron boutique would have had it too.

I've been meaning to ask someone who knows: how many times does one spray herself with perfume? Bahiana seems to vanish rather quickly on me and I wonder if I'm underspraying myself.

I have not only never bought an Alfred Sung, I've never tried one! Will have to look for the Jewel. I don't think I've noticed it on a counter around here. But we are opposites: the Reglisse sounds very tempting to me, and the Bijou sounds like it will be sweeter than I like :-)

Thanks for clarifying! Perhaps the Caron boutique does have a tester and just isn't advertising the fact (?)

Bahiana is one of those summer citrus-y things that doesn't last all day, but if I remember correctly it makes it for at least 3-4 hours, which is about all I expect from an EdT. Perhaps just carry a small spray decant with you?

It reminds me of the Guerlain Vetiver pour Elle release: only in duty-free shops in Paris? WHY?

BTW, the Bijou bottle looks like an iron.

    Dear all,

I was introduced to the Caron Eau de Réglisse by my friend who councels and sells Caron's products in “Le Printemps” (Grands Magasins) in Paris.

As regards the bottle, indeed, the picture on escentual is quite close to the shape of the actual bottel. However, it is very nice as it is longer than it seems on the picture and the top (stopper? “bouchon” in French) is in a nice dark wood, not perfectly cylindrical. Thus, the whole bottle looks very elegant and thin.

As regards the fragrance itself it is a very nice “mouth-watering treat” like Angel from Thierry Mugler although it is not as sweet as Angel. It is a delicate sweet. I have discovered liquorice thanks to this fragrance. It would suit a man or a woman indifferently.

And as regards it's availability, I think it is a limited edition fragrance like Caron may have done by the past. That may explain why there is no ad campaign about it. It seems to be reserved to some happy few weel informed customers and fragrances addicted like everybody on this site.

    Sorry for my English.

    Damien
