Britney Spears Fantasy will debut in the UK this year. Can it beat top seller Chanel no. 5? Read about it in The Times Online, which also notes in another article that...
THE $25 billion (£15 billion) global perfume industry is losing its fragrance amid a frenetic struggle for a stagnating market, manufacturers and analysts have given warning.
Profits have been squeezed while shoppers are bewildered by the launch of up to 300 perfumes a year.
See the rest of that article here; am I crazy, or did we get way more than 300 launches last year?
Despite the glut of fragrance releases, columnist Daryl Lease of HeraldTribune.com notes that there is "an untapped market for the stench in and around Washington", and offers a few suggestions.
Robin, I share your doubts on the report that “up to 300 perfumes” are launched every year. I find that a very low figure too.
Undocumented statistics such as this one are usually 1) extracted from specific surveys (with well-defined criteria), or 2) based on loose estimations by market analists (whose reports tend to be on the conservative side). All in all, they're not the most reliable material.
M, I think I read somewhere or another that there were at least 400+ in 2004, and if I had to guess, I'd say we had even more in 2005. That shoppers are bewildered, though, I'd say is right on target!
I heard another statistic from a fairly reliable source-680! Crazy, no?
V, that sounds more likely. It is a few more than we need 😉
