Atelier Cologne Gold Leather ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 25 March 2014 58 Comments

Atelier Cologne Gold Leather, brand visual

Atelier Cologne introduced Gold Leather in 2013, as part of the new Collection Métal fragrance series that also included Silver Iris. Like Angie, I thought Silver Iris was nice enough, but it couldn’t compete with the fabulous iris fragrances already in my collection. Gold Leather, which seems to be less widely distributed, was much more interesting to me after a quick sniff on paper.

Gold Leather starts off boozy and rich, with a sweet, spicy rum (although it smells like something heavier) and a twist or three of orange peel. There’s a generous dollop of plum jam…

By Kilian Apple Brandy ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2014 46 Comments

oak barrels

Apple Brandy is new from niche line By Kilian. It’s exclusive to the brand’s boutique in New York City (boo! hiss! we hate localized perfume exclusives!) and according to brand founder Kilian Hennessy, is meant as a “bit of a wink to the Big Apple and cognac”.

And hey, that’s just what it is, so much so that this will be a shorter review than usual. Apple Brandy opens as a fruity rum cocktail, liberally garnished with apple slices. It warms quickly, taking on heavier oak and amber notes. Within a few minutes, it’s closer to something you might reasonably call brandy…

Demeter Dulce de Leche, Espresso, Chai Tea & Whiskey Tobacco ~ fragrance reviews

Demeter Dulce de Leche & Espresso

Feeling a little pinched after holiday spending? I know I am. So today seemed a perfect day to talk about Demeter. I am fond of Demeter, and was surprised to see I hadn’t reviewed anything from the house since 2009, when I talked about Beetroot and Pruning Shears (thumbs up on both). I don’t like everything Demeter makes — I don’t even have time to try everything they make. Life is short, and Demeter is prolific. But every so often, it’s fun to buy a bunch of their miniatures. Six dollars (6!!) gets you a 15 ml travel size, although you’ll have to shell out a few dollars more if you want spray rather than splash. No, they’re not high art (although some of them might just qualify as conceptual art), and no, they’re not long lasting, and no, they don’t always smell like what they’re supposed to smell like. But sometimes they’re spot on, and often, they’re just plain fun.

On the docket today: Dulce de Leche, Espresso, Chai Tea and Whiskey Tobacco…

Frapin 1697 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 14 March 2012 30 Comments

Frapin 1697

The Frapin line of fragrances has (somehow) escaped my attention; blame it on a flooded market, a lack of time and energy to find samples, or being in a perfume-induced stupor: “No more perfumes! Enough!” So: a year after its introduction, I’m finally sniffing 1697 (named after the year the Frapin family was ennobled by Louis XIV).

1697 was created by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour and includes notes of cabreuva, dark rum, acacia, davana, pink pepper, jasmine, hawthorn, ylang ylang, cloves, cinnamon, sweet dried fruits accord, rose, ambergris, myrrh, tonka bean, patchouli, cedar, cistus labdanum, white musk and vanilla.

When first applied, 1697 smells of wine/brandy, then “rum cask;” as this brash, fumy liquor accord subsides…

Strange Invisible Perfumes Essence of IX ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 9 April 2010 41 Comments

Strange Invisible Perfumes Essence of IX

I don’t drink much (anymore) and maybe (or maybe not?) that’s why I’m such a sucker for booze notes in perfume. Stuff like this…

She commissioned a twelfth-generation master distiller, also located in Napa, to produce an exquisite batch of French oak essence for the perfume. One of the defining alchemical accomplishments of the composition, the oak essence was triple distilled in old European copper stills from a wine called ‘Esprit de cognac’ which is aged in French oak barrels.1

…gets my attention, and add in rose, white sage, black currant, wild honey and lavender (ok, in all truth I can often do without lavender) and you’ve got something I’d like to try. The ‘she’ in the quote above is Alexandra Balahoutis, of indie botanical line Strange Invisible Perfumes, and the perfume is Essence of IX, a limited edition project in collaboration with California winery Colgin Cellars.

Essence of IX opens quite boozy (really, maybe it’s just the alcohol) and herbal, and it’s slightly medicinal to boot…
